View Full Version : any surfers out there?
have had my latest addition to my quiver for a few weeks now, and of course little opportunity to test it in crappy summer surf :( but when i did get some overhead waves it really surprised me with it's hold on steep drops, and still maintaining a loose, snappy feel!

one use for my truck is accessing remote surf, and will play a key role in the build process: accomodating multiple boards, wetsuits, etc. anyone else searching for a good break with room to breathe?

Nice board!
I've tried it a few times but the conditions sucked. I kayak surf quite a bit but not as much this summer as I would have liked. We have a small surf comunity here in Marquette. A lot of people are suprised to hear that there is surfing in the great lakes. It actually is pretty respectable around here, especially spring and fall.
Post up some action shots if you have any.
yeah, i've seen some footage/pics of great lakes surf...and i thought it was cold out here on vancouver island! little chance of "the man in the grey suit" cruising the lineup though eh? as for action shots, it sure is tough to convince a buddy to stay on the beach and snap photos of us enjoying a good day! i'll see what i can do.
this was a fun day at a spot requiring 4x4 access

Nice off the lip BCJC!
I've run into quite few BC surfers over the years down in Baja.
They rant and rave about the secret spots up in BC, but then suggest getting a dry suit if I plan to come visit.
Here is a picture of the point out in front of my property down in Baja.

Why Isn't anybody out???
Hint: check out the mare's tails...the norte's were "nuken" at about 50 knots!
Then next day the wind calmed down and we got double to triple overhead for the next week!!!
and of course little opportunity to test it in crappy summer surf
Don't feel like the lone ranger! the Central Coast of California has been flat all summer too.
I got skunked this morning for about the 30th F'en time!
wow, i should be visiting down there!:yikes: look like a great setup, although i hear that is not uncommon down there! accessable points are few up here (unless you own a boat or floatplane), and of course are becoming more and more crowded. as for bc guys raving about their stash, that seems a little counter-productive in my books...and i would imagine the water temp in central cal. wouldn't be far off from ours. in the middle of winter it can get down to 6 Celcius (43 Farenheit), and rivermouths are a bit chillier. a plus where i live is the air temp rarely gets below 0 (celcius) so a good 6mm with hood/boots/gloves and yer good for a couple hours. but of course, you don't wanna come up here, it's cold, gnarly, and sharky...definitely wanna stay away...;)

I surfed all the time when I grew up. I don't get out as much as I used to because I moved away from the beach. However, I did just come back from vacation and managed to get a few good rides out of hurricane ernesto. :victory:

Congrats on the new board BCJC!
You guys are hard core! I complain when it drops below 55 degrees F.
I have never gotten anyone to take pics of me. I think I would be scared to see how bad I actually look.

Absolutely, grew up surfing with a tight group and am look ing forward to riding the Baja. Seems like it is sounding like a better location all the time. So much to do and so little time! I paddle too and have been padding into most of my local breaks more and more but am looking to rebuild my quiver. I like the swallow tail, they really detonate the lip.
well, summer junk is just about done, and the winter swell is coming! as we like to call it here, it's the "changing of the guards". i'm glad to see some other surfers out there in expo land, and would love to continue discussions of our unique obsession! not sure if it should remain in this thread, but for now it'll do. i'd love to hear/see of others surfing adventures, and maybe one day get a surf trip organized! let's continue to share our experiences.

OH MAN!!!!
I got got home from spending the whole morning in the water, and IT WAS THE BEST I'VE SEEN IT AROUND HERE IN YEARS!!!!!
Shoulder to a little overhead, top to bottom zippers for 300 yards plus!!!! It was blowing slightly off-shore with an occasional wave that threw these paper thin lips...I got tubed 3 times this morning:exclaim:
This is the first time that I got out of the water DOG tired due to getting so many GREAT waves in years (as opposed to being tired from getting flogged by macken close out sets)!
It looks like I won't be getting most of the stuff in my yard done today. Oh well, at least I have my priorities right!

Gee...Thanks. Just what I needed to hear.
Our water is still warm (about 66), we have off shore winds (santa ana), but no surf (1-2')
BTW, I am trying to make it up for SnT. See you on Friday possibly.
right on, congrats JS! 3 times in the green room in one morning??? holy jealous batman. getting cold here, the buoy reports 49, and i surfed a river mouth the other day and my feet were like clubs after an hour and a half. so i went out and bought 7mm xcel closed toe boots!

Longboarder here, don't get to surf as much as I used to, but my son just turned two so soon we will both be surfing. My wife used to think surfing was expensive till I started modding the 4runner.
BCJC, what part of the island do you live? I made it up to Tofino two summers ago, didn't take my board but wished I did. Can't wait to get back up there, it is an awesome place.

sshhhhhhhhh...yeah i live in a town called Ucluelet, just 30 min. south of Tofino. i do love it here, but it's quickly being overrun with wealthy babyboomers, and therefor massive resorts and high priced property and condo's...the common man/woman is slowly being squeezed out...

I think I finally learned to say that right after spending a week there. Bummer about the resorts and such, I feel you, I was born and raised here and the way things are going it will be really hard for me to ever own a home here. I also liked all the logging roads to explore, we did a day trip out to virgin falls when we were there. Definately can't wait to make it back up that way.

Chiming in from Oregon...
All of my 4Wheel drive travel is searching out breaks, surfed many of 29 degree air temp and 50 degree water temps. Just this last weekend was head high and offshore....awesome conditions.
I'm more of a longboard / Hybird / Fish guy. I'd be stoked for a surf trip and would love to meet other surfers as well.

Hey Chuck,
I live in Portland. If your willing to drive an hour or so you have access to some great surf. I wear a 4/3 with gloves and booties year round and a hood when winter hits.
We're never at a lack of swell, infact its quite oposite as we routinely get 25+ swells here in the winter.
Hit me up if you'd like some more info!

hey J, right on man, give me a shout if your ever up here or maybe are interested in a Washington state trip etc. i'm all about the quiver, my small wave board is a 6'0 "mod-fish", and i also love to mess around on a 7' 11" funshape nose rider! it's all about the glide!

The quad is a Manadala http://www.mandalacustomshapes.com/. Manny is Rich'a prodigy and he is a local shaper so spec are very similar to his speed dialers. My is a 5'11''...I think its 20.5'' wide and 2.5'' thick? You know how these guys are... they dont put specs on their boards. It was glassed at moonlight. I think Rich threw the green room stencil on as a joke because they were shaped up here. I got it during the clark foam bust so no tappered stringer.
I've had some epic rides on it at _O_R _I_ _E. Its a cut back machine...you get so much speed out of it. I recommend the AK2 fins. Speed dialers fins had no drive.

Can't believe I missed this section...
I'm a lifelong "waterman", started on thrusters in the early 80s, converted to longboards in my late teens. Been riding 10'+ noseriders ever since. Took a break from surfing for a couple of years, put on some weight, had some health issues, but now I'm back in the water again. It ain't like riding a bike, I can tell you that much. I just started getting back into form, and it feels great.
In addition to surfing, I also bodysurf, bodyboard, snorkel, fish, and I recently broadened my horizons and picked up a 5'11" kneeboard. I wanted a board I could travel with, and take my two year old son out on. This kneeboarding thing is INSANE!!! The board turns like a Porsche 911 on rails, catches anything remotely wave-like, and goes from zero to whooooo in nothing flat. I'm sorry I didn't try this sooner.
My next step is to try inflatable mat surfing. The Greenough-designed 4th Gear Flyers are cool, but at $250-$350 a pop, they're a luxury item at best. I found some cheapo mats at Leslie's Pool Supplies that might be fun.
I'm also experimenting with different "paipo" designs, one of which is a converted kneeboard, the kind that you ride on behind a boat.
Like this:
http://www.euphoriasailing.com/Watersports_Equipment_Sales/Images/Towed_Toys/BaseViper.png
You tear off the belt and the foam cover, and underneath there's a perfect cavity to lay in. There's absolutely no bouyancy, but at speed, they plane and turn like crazy. You get real far up on them, with your head over the nose, and use it like a bodysurfing aid. Fast as greased lightning. I've also been cutting pieces of industrial plastic, basically cutting board material, and trying to make paipo boards out of them by rounding the edges, then heating them with a blow-torch and bending them ever so slightly.
Downside is try getting some respect in the lineup at Little Dume on a huge south swell, when you're out there with a glorified waterski or a piece of butcher block and a pair of Vipers, hanging around in the impact zone and waiting for the Hui wannabes with their oh-so-serious faces on to screw up and give you the late take-off.
If you ever see a couple of giggling idiots surfing a bright orange 15' Coleman canoe on a 10' day in the middle of winter at Faria, that's probably my brother and I. Paddle over and have a beer.

It came with those thruster fins so I used those for the first few sessions. It worked out fine but as soon as I turned it into a quad, it just flew. At first I had the same sized 4 fins but I switch out the trailer fins to smaller ones and it has worked out really well...a lot looser and really stable and no skidding out. I surf OBSF. Its a really powerful beach break with lots of current. I also surf the reefs around santa cruz with it when its over head.

Last month we took a weekend trip to Kauai with 10 friends. It was great, empty beaches and empty surf. The pictures don't really do it justice. Super Doody, nice design by Burley. I made a few of those in my teen years, great for beach breaks. That was during the Mark Richards, Shawn Thompson days. I 've been riding a thruster for years, and I'm about ready to pick up a Epoxy baord Channel Islands design. I tryed one out last week up in Big sur and was surprised how much more floatation there is in the turns.
It's great to see a bunch of surf dogs that 4x4. Then again alot of us have cruised baja and the 2 go hand in hand.:safari-rig:
I grew up surfing Zuma, County Line, Malibu. Now days I'm enjoying Pismo up to Lower Big Sur. :sunny:
hey pismo, which epoxy are you talking about? i have a merrick in the XTR epoxy construction, and it's breaking down pretty quick. 1 year old, and i've already popped out the leash plug and loosened the fcs fin plugs. the deck is delam-ing in places to. it seems the glass doesn't want to stick to the foam they're using (extruded polystyrene). i can't tell if the great performance is the technology, or merrick's sweet shape! just fyi, xtr doesn't last.

That's awesome. I'm headed back to Kaua'i with my family for the first time in four years. I'm taking my kneeboard and Vipers with me, because my longboards won't travel and I can't stand to rent. I've never had a problem thus far, but what was the situation like in terms of localization? I've heard some rumblings that Kaua'i is getting more localized, in terms of the amount of hassle and threats, and all the BS that come with it. I've never had a problem holding my own in and out of the lineup, and my Buddha-like demeanor usually disarms people, but I'll be with my wife and kid and a bunch of old people, and a punch-up just isn't in the cards. Surfing is how I got into 4x4s. I had a 2WD '95 Tacoma that I would take down to Baja all the time. I couldn't afford 4WD! After having too many punctures, I sprang for some BFG All-Terrains, the biggest I could stuff into the wheel wells. I had a lumber rack for the surfboards, and a home-made nerf bar to tie a tractor strap to. After scraping and bouncing my way through half the deserts between Mojave and Cabo, I decided a 4x4 was in the works.
Whenever I think I need another modification or piece of expensive camping equipment, I remind myself that I saw more trails and surfed more exotic places in that beater two-wheel pickup, with a beer cooler, a K-Mart sleeping bag, a tarp, a couple of surfboards, my last $40 in my pocket and no backup plan, than I probably ever will in my purpose-built Land Cruiser!

I honestly couldn't tell you because I was on the Navy base there(limited access). Myself and one friend were the only ones in the water. But, in general as long as you show respect you shouldn't have any problems. I worry about it more on Oahu than I do on Kauai. HTH.
