Hi all!
I will be in Palm Springs California on Friday November 10th to attend the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association Expo. Since I'll already be in California I was wondering if any of you live near Palm Springs or know of some good wheeling in the area. My plans are not solid yet, but I am thinking of camping out Friday night and exploring on Saturday.
Anyone who wants to go play, explore and find some adventure, let me know!:088:

Brian, I will be watching this thread for more info, I may be down for this trip. It will all depend on how things are going, and if I have Ellesha or not.

A few weeks ago we spent a couple of weekends in the National forest around Idyllwild of off 74 and 243. Some really nice camping up in the mountains (5000-8000ft), good hiking opportunities also. Easy forest roads mostly.
Don't know the schedule for November yet, but that area is only 1.5-2h from us (so is Palm Springs) so I'll keep following this thread and may come out for a quick weekend.

That's relatively close to the Hammer trails (Sledge, Claw, Jack), AKA Johnson Valley BLM OHV area. While best known for rock crawling, there are miles of high speed routes available if your into that. Some fun dunes too!
Last time I was there I ran Outer Limits - one hell of a trail.

Yes, the Hammers are close. Watched a Jeep guy play there once and played ourselves on one of those big dunes close by. This would be to the north of Josuha tree.
There is also Big Bear (a little crowded for my taste).
We also know cool trails out east of Indio.
Plenty of stuff within 1-2h from Palm Springs.

Last time I was out in Anza I saw a sign that said something like 16 miles to Palm Desert so off I went thinking it would be cool to go. The trail pretty much pettered out into a creek bed. Never made it all the way. This was the first of about four water crossings that got deeper each time. The last one crossed at an oblique angle that took you through about 40 yards of creek. Sure glad I didn't get stuck.

I am refering to the town of Anza.........
Which is due East of Temecula......
Which is the short cut highway route for San Diego North County residents to sneak into Palm Springs.
Very Scenic coming down the mtn. (on standard highway road) with views across the desert!
.....did somebody say....."Scenic":friday: >?!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Gang!
I am driving to Palm Springs on Thursday afternoon/evening.
I am hoping to be done with business by 4pm on Friday and then I am planning to head into Joshua Tree National Park to camp Friday night.
On Saturday I'd like to do a fun scenic and challenging trail ride. I am plainning to drive back to Phoenix Saturday evening so I don't want to go too much further West or away from AZ.
I am thinking Berdoo Canyon and also looking for some aternatives or additions.
Is anyone still interested?
For camping Friday night?
For a Saturday trail ride?
Anyone know a trail near by we shouldn't miss?
I'm still looking into restrictions and areas effected by the fires...

Hey Brian,
I had indicated I would be up for joining you but now I can't make it. A meeting I must attend, which was supposed to be last Sat, has been rescheduled for this Sat. So...will have to catch you some other time. Have a good weekend, dude!

Joshua Tree NP says that camping fills up quick due to the Vet Day holiday weekend. Will try there first but alternative camp site for Friday night will be somewhere TBD, possibly nearby BLM land...
:tent:
Um, could we please get a larger tent icon?

Well, we won't make it. We'll be doing a desert hiking weekend.
Tracks: You said "challenging", what we've done in the area was rather easy, but some areas are quite scenic and there are mines to explore.
This trip (http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2175&highlight=red+canyon) started from Chiriaco Summit and goes down Red Canyon. There are challenging side trails in that area.
There is a nice loop we did from Bradshaw trail over Graham Pass and Chuchwalla Springs Rd to Chuckwalla Well.
Access to the area from I10 is via Chiriaco Summit, Red Cloud Mine Rd and Chuckwalla Rd.
Have a great trip!

Thanks for the info!
If I end up going solo on this adventue I will limit the challenges and enjoy the scenery more!

Mark let me look into it.
For Friday night or just for Saturday?

Friday and Sat.
....another PM sent just now.
Brian.........
after a quick look at a simple mapquest.....it looks like there are not a lot of easy close roads to enter the park from Palm Springs.
One road I came up with is Berdoo Canyon Rd. which is entered from Dillon Rd.
So Dillon and Berdoo might make a good meet up spot if we are both on time.
Or one could drive north up Berdoo to a pre~determined spot along the trail and the other/others could meet up (but I don't have a GPS...I'm a good guesser though with my wet finger in the air!):arabia:
I have never been to the area......maybe some guys who have been there can speak up and help out soon.

Berdoo Canyon has been suggested, I believe Scott Brady has a write up on the trail. That looks good. Perhaps Berdoo up into the park and then some other roads to exit the park on the north side and then some other trails TBD north of the park...

Brian..........
The JTNF claims there is NO Overflow camping in the park.....and they recommend a BLM corner of the park.
I'm trying to post the map and links here.........

There is also a $15 Entry fee per vehicle to the park..........plus campsite fees.

Brian,
I can suggest Berdoo Canyon trail into Joshua Tree & pick up the Geology Tour. Other trails in the immediate area are Old Dale Road, Brooklyn Mine Road & Pinkham Canyon Trail. As Uwe recommended there also is the Bradshaw Trail & Red Canyon Trail. All of these are listed in Backcountry Adventures, Southern California by Peter Massey & Jeanne Wilson.
I would love to join you, but I'm leaving for a quick weekend in LA Bay on Friday.
Hope you can hook up with someone.

Kewl posts with the Joshua Tree maps! My girlfriend is from Palm Desert - the next time I go out there I'll be sure to rent a 4wd and do a little "exploring" in JT - shhh, don't tell the rental company!
One day I'll move out there...and I finally get to have the same fun the rest of you guys are having!!!:1888fbbd:
