For anyone in the market, Costco has a coupon deal on BFG ATs and KM2s right now- $70 off. When I bought my last set, I got a written quote (with coupon ) from Costco, took it to Discount Tire and they price matched. They also sold me fair priced lifetime mounting and balancing.

Good deal if you can bring it to the competition!
At the Costco here (last time I checked) they will let you purchase any tire but they wouldn't mount anything more then one size bigger then stock. It's not like they are hurting for business, but they are missing out on a massive Calgary truck market.

They do the same thing here as well. That's why the price match from Discount Tire works so well.

Must be a CND thing. Costco mounted BFG 37's on my FJ80 size was not an issue.

I was just talking to my friend who works in Costco tire department today about this. He said that now they will mount larger tires as long as they are no bigger then the tires that you bring the truck in with. They just want to make sure that the tire will not rub. I haven’t gone in and checked this out myself but this is just what I heard.

I just got tires for my '95 Taco at Costco, and they fought with me about putting on 31X10.5 BFG AT's, claiming that according to their computer, it was not the right size tire for my vehicle. I did get the tires in the end, but it was kind of a pain. If another reliable company was willing to match the Costco price (especially with the coupon) I'd probably go there instead.

that's why i got my 33's mounted there and then put them on my truck at home. :coffeedrink:
i DO need to go get them rebalanced though...gettin' vibes at 50 mph...
by the way, 5 255/85 BFG MTs were $1000 out the door...pretty good price...

The Costco in Burbank mounted my tires to my car, they just took a look at it and said yeah we can do it. I did have 33's on there before...

yah, i've gotten a lot of conflicting reports, but when i was in there getting my 31's put on my taco three years ago, there was some girl getting 33's put on her f 250, and this was at the original costco in kirkland, they seemed to have no problem then.

I used to work at a CostCo garage.
The different attitudes you guys are getting about upsizing tires are a direct result of the manager's outlook.
My manager was into offroading, and he would let the guys put any tire on any vehicle that the customer asked for. (To a reasonable limit of course.)
If we thought the tires would rub, or just wouldn't fit at all, we would tell the customer that, we would write it on the invoice saying "TIRE SIZE NOT ADVISED BY INSTALLERS" or something to that effect. And the customer had to initial that statement also.
The corporate policy though, is to not install tires with a greater than 3% overall diameter different than what the car came with from the factory. There is a program in the shop computer that lists all OE sizes and they also have a 2nd program that compares one size to another and gives the % difference between the two sizes.
You have to remember the liability side of things, if someone comes in, gets larger tires and they go out and flip their vehicle, they can come back and try to sue the store that put them on.
CostCo is a huge corporation, and they are just trying to limit their exposure to possible liability as much as they can.
And has been mentioned, to easily get around this, you can just bring in your wheels and they will mount the tires on them and you can take them home and bolt them onto your vehicle. They will do this with little to no questions.
CostCo also has (or had when I worked there) a policy of lifetime flat repairs, mounting and balancing on tires they sell. The limit on flat fixes (punctures in the tread only) maxed out at 3 fixes per tire - after that the tire's carcass is considered to have been weakened enough to be considered a safety hazard, and they won't repair the tire a 4th time. They will however pro-rate the tire based on tread life or mileage, and refund a percentage of the original purchase price towards a new replacement tire.
They won't try to repair a sidewall-damaged tire. I haven't run into a reputable shop that will actually work on a sidewall - if they are able to fix the damage, the fix likely won't last too long.

Almost forgot...
The sale/rebate that CostCo has on BFG (and Michelin for that matter) happens every spring and every fall.
So, if you may be able to squeek through the summer on your current set of tires, you'll still be able to get the rebate in the fall.

Good stuff, thanks Adam. I may have to try to take the wheels in, off the vehicle, next time I need tires.

They lost my business for awhile when they wouldn't do larger tire sizes. But I've been assured that if I come in and want new set of 315s for my Cruiser that they will do it at the Boise store. The Twin Falls, ID store never relaxed their policy even during the time when everyone was using the corporate memo as the reason they couldn't. The stock 35s and 37s in the store. And no manufactuer came with 37s stock and the H2 is the only one I can think of with 35s stock. Prior to this I loved buying tires there. Once I had a 33x9.5 BFG rip in the sidewall. They couldn't get one in a timely manner because they were backordered and they figured it was going to be over a month. So they sent me over to Wal Mart which had one in stock. I paid for the tire at Wal Mart and brought it to Costco and they installed it and then sent me to customer service for a full refund. That one act lead them to a lot of tire sales.

$70 off a set? or $70 off per tire? How do I get the coupon?

Discount has the same deal now ($70 rebate on a set). Not a coupon, but same discount.

But I'll bet DT's base price per tire is alot more than Costco, with stems, mountign and balancing. At least that was the case when I bought mine a couple years ago.

That's above and beyond for sure!
It's probably farther than I would have gone for the customer, or would have been allowed to go by my manager, but I've heard of stranger things. lol
We would quite frequently do a lot of "extras" for customers though, even to the point where we would lose money on a deal, but the company outlook is to really try and keep the customers - I should really be saying "members" since that is the correct term - as satisfied as possible.
And that "over a month" thing is brutal.
As a distributor, (Costco is really a company with no distributor, they buy directly from the supplier, and that's why their prices are so good) when you call MUG (Michelin/Uniroyal/BF Goodrich) and the person on their order desk says it will be a month or more to get a tire, that means they don't know how long it will be. The order desk staff can only see the next 4 weeks of production, and if the tire you are asking about isn't on that 4 week schedule, they simply have no idea when you're going to see that tire.
It literally could be a year or more, and in some of my past experiences, it has taken that long to get some MUG product - typically it's the BFG A/T's that take a long time to get...
I really don't understand why, because it HAS to be one of their top-sellers in their entire lineup. And it's almost always one of the popular light-truck sizes that we end up waiting on -- 265/75R16 for example. I remember a couple of years ago there was like a 6-month back-log of orders for that size for all of Canada.
For a company as large as Michelin, I see a lot of ridiculous business practices occurring in their operations... :shakinghead:
But, they do make a good product. lol

This was a couple of months after Firestone recall on the Explorer tires. Everyone was trying to keep up with the demand for those replacements and there were delays on the other sizes.
I was dealing with the manager directly. Whenever he'd see my Cruiser pull in he'd come and visit with me. One time he sat down and looked at my photos from Moab with me while I was waiting for my tire. Another time he showed me pictures from a trip he took to Australia. I was a good customer too. In 5 years, I put 13 different sets of tires on that Land Cruiser. I kept playing with size and tread pattern. I don't want to think about how much it cost me. I started with 31x10.50 ATs and sold the truck with 35x12.50 MTs. So maybe I was getting some special treatment?
When they went to the policy of not mounting oversized tires they lost me for awhile. I did buy some tires for my VW from them. Now that it has become more relaxed they might get me back. BFGs are a decent value.
