View Full Version : Pyeatt Draw Trail (AZ) Nov, 18, 2006

Hello fellow Expo Portal members!
Pyeatt Draw was listed as one of the 10 most scenic trails by BFG Tires. Since the article, trail use is very high. The trail is also very difficult. It would not surprise me that in time, some obstacles might receive names from various wheelers.
Scott Brady and myself will be co-leaders on this run. This run is going to be open to 10 vehicles only due to trail length and difficulty. Scott is also planning to submit the story, with pics to Off-Road Magazine. (Thanks Scott!) If you'd like to join us please post a thread along with the main modifications to your truck (lift, tire, etc). Scott or myself will respond with the OK to be added to the list. I know this "do you qualify bit" sounds "weird", however the trail really demands a modified vehicle for the run to be a success with this many vehicles. We don't plan on being out there for 10 hours in late November.
Because of the difficulty, here's what we're looking for in vehicle specs:
1. Suspension lift of 2" or greater (sorry, no stock vehicles)
2. Up-sized tires
3. At least a rear locker (though a front locker will certainly help)
4. Rock sliders (unless you have a unusually high-lifted vehicle)
5. One good spare tire
I've run Pyeatt Draw once. Some of my friends have been on it a few times. On each trip there's usually some type of carnage though none has been severe. We've seen or heard of bent rear driveshafts and/or control arms, flat tires, some minor scrapes or dings. The trail is full of ledges, large rocks, and sharp tire eaters. Some areas do not have bypasses.
Details:
DATE: Nov 18 (Saturday)
MEETING PLACE: Shoofly Ruins on Houston Mesa Road just NE or Payson
(AZ87 north toward Strawberry to Houston Mesa Road...turn right onto HMR...proceed about 4 miles to the large and paved parking lot on the east side of HMR)
MEETING TIME: 9:30 AM (pull out at 9:45)
TRIP DURATION: About 6 hours (if all goes well)
TRAIL RATING: Mostly a 3.5 to 3.5+ (we may bypass one 4.0-ish obstacle that has eaten many driveline parts)(if we don't bypass, you can bypass)(also...we will not be attempting the 4th section tat most rate a 4.5 to a 5 in difficulty)
BRUSH: Very little. Only in a few places.
Plan on cool or possibly cold weather. We'll watch this very closely as the date draws near. Come on out and bring friends (in your truck)!
APPROVED ATTENDEES:
1. Scott Brady (co-leader)
2004 Tacoma
(Scott states he might have a "new goodie" on his truck by then? Hmm? OK, let's not work him for info :ylsmoke: )
2. John Shotts (co-leader)
2001 UZJ100 Land Cruiser
(Yes, Roklimo is going. Two 100-series have attempted the run so far. Both sustained some damage, though in their defense they were not outfitted like mine (less lift, smaller tires, less protection, etc). This will be a greater challenge for me and the 100 than the Moab Trails I've run.)
3. Seth JS
2002 Tacoma
4. Goodtimes
Jeep Wrangler
5. Madd Baggins
1994 FZJ80 Land Cruiser ("Tortuga")
6. Baja Taco
Toyota Tacoma
7. McVick Off Road

9. Crawler # 976

10. Doc Random (Randy Drwinga)
1997 Lexus LX450 S/C (Supercharged)
Waiting list:

You guys should have fun. I went thru there last month on a CSC run. We had 15 vehicles of various capabilities and had a great time. There were some dents and scrapes on a few rigs and the sole 100 on this run did some body damage and bent both lower control arms.
I got hung up on a muddy ledge and candy-striped my rear DS. Couple of guys stacked a few rocks for me to get over. That was my last trip on 285's and no front locker.
You know what, put me down for this John. That is a beautiful trail.

Well. I'll have to get with Scott about your truck. You could probably run the last 4.5 section. You might make things look too easy!
OK Brian. We'd luv to have ya! J

OK Alvin. We got ya.
We'll PROBABLY not run that last 30-minute section that has the driveshaft eating ledge. I know of 4 FZJ80's that messed up driveshafts on this climb.

I'd like to go on this one. I haven't been on this trail at all, so I'd just need a solid opinion on doing it with only 32" tires. John, you know my Taco and have recently done the trail, so I'd like your opinion. I have 2.75" susp. lift, locked front/rear, sliders, tube bumpers & rear 1/4 protection.

I'm in no financial situation for repairs right now, so I may be taking a lot of bypasses. I mainly just want to check out the trail.

John, Scott,
If there is still room left as the date gets closer, I'll see if I can get the '87 Toy P/U beater there. That's a long drive tho...things tend to get a "bit" warm on long highway runs.
7" lift
Dual t'cases

Another reason we're limiting the group size. We want to make sure everyone is not rushed and has FUNNNNNNN! Dang....you got no worries. If I believe my 100 boat can make it OK you Taco-dues are set!

What do you think about a DII with 2"-3" of lift with 265/75s, rock sliders, diff guards, winch and a Center Locking Diff with Traction Control?
Scott knows my rig and John you know DIIs well, so go ahead and be honest!:costumed-smiley-007

Yer in. I ran this with Mike McDonald already. I invited him as a pre-run for a future Rover run. Mike did great throughout though one ledge bit him and he T-boned a control arm badly. That however was in the last 30-minute section we PROBABLY will not run.
The Rover TRAC works well so you should do OK. If a strap comes out you won't be the first to get one....which makes it OK, huh? :jump:

FYI
Kevin Patterson ran this with his brother and some others when it was dry. They said the tires just gripped everything and the trail was fairly easy. When I went thru a couple weeks later it had been raining alot and the same things Kev said were easy became quite slippery and the difficulty level went up for sure.
So if its dry, it won't be to bad. If the trail is wet and muddy...

Oh, and to make sure you're comfortable. The driver and passenger have a cupholder each. Then, the second row has two cupholders plus two more in the center console which could be shared with the front seat folks. Then, there's 3 more in the 3rd row. The meaning of this? Well the top pic was the "Driveline Eater". It ate all the rear shafts. That's the last obstacle I mentioned we'd probably not run. We'll have to see how long the main trail takes us.
The bottom pic is insane. It's a SWB obstacle for sure. The bottom ledge is wacked out enough. The top climb on the edge is wackjobbed. I would bet money on you and Lonnie Paugh to make it though.

Last trip to the Hammer's was done on a trailer - sold both the trailer and the tow rig last year. Barber poled both d'shafts, blew a Detroit, a Ring and Pinion, and had to cut out and rebuild sections of the exocage...

You shoulda seen me "self recover" on Dishpan Springs right after I got my jeep. Me, a couple other jeeps, and a couple of rovers I was showing around got to the creek crossing ("Deep Creek", AKA T-6), where we found 2 penis extensions (Ford superduty's with way too much lift for the ~36" tires they had). I got out and looked over the rock garden (before the bridge was in place and the rock garden was moved up the trail). The Ford owners told me it was impossible to get through there...so I had to prove them wrong. On the very last rock I had to clear, my belly pan got hung up. I'm sitting there in 4-lo, both lockers on, idling, with all 4 tires spinning (slowly). I get out (jeep still spinning all 4 tires), look back to see them telling the rest of the group something to the effect of "I told him it was impossible"....I grabbed my rear bumper, lifted up and pushed, at which time the jeep gets enough traction to start moving forward (remember it is still in gear, idling), I look back at them, wave, walk back to my jeep which is now driving itself up the trail, get in and proceed around the corner.
There were no comments from the peanut gallery when I walked back to spot the rest of the group through.

FYI- there is a most excellent camping spot right near the start of the trail. I will try to describe- right after the trail starts, a road crosses it. This road can be accessed by following the original dirt road that leads to the trailhead for another 100 yeards or so. If you follow this trail-crossing road for perhaps 100 yards beyond where it crosses the trail, you will find the most excellent camp site on your left. Room for perhaps 10 trucks, plenty of level spots for tents, and the trail circles around it.
If you don't remember where the trail starts, you're SOL. :D
If my instructions were clear as mud, you're also SOL, although as you stated there's an abundance of most excellent camp sites all over the place out there.

In that movie I saw lots of revving engines and spinning wheels, not a good example of how to tread lightly even though the text at the start said BFG was dedicated to it. I saw nobody from the sponsor companies actively promoting even the most basic of tread lightly principles, for example explaining to people not to spin wheels especially in the wet or putting the rocks back where they got them from. In fact, I question the idea of taking 30 vehicles through any trail in the rain, sure most of this trail is bedrock but trucks at the end had mud spray all up their sides and that mud came from spinning wheels on the trail.
Tread lightly is so important for trails such as Pyeatt because it has got a lot of attention lately in the press. At the current rate it will be wrecked in a couple years.

Well Robthebrit, I need to thank you for making me watch that. I read your scathing review of the trail manners of those involved with that run, and had to see for myself. I guess we have different ideas about irresponsible off road driving. I only saw one instance of tires going around more than one revolution, and that was on a slickrock ledge- I doubt if he hurt the trail there. I must have missed the rocks being moved and not replaced, although it's entirely possible the ones you saw moved got replaced sometime in the other 4+ hours of the run that were not recorded. You were right about the mud on the sides of trucks, although the 3 miles of muddy road that must be traversed to get to the trail might have contributed. In fact, my wife's truck still has mud from that road from 3 months ago- and she didn't run the trail itself, she joined me at the trailhead to camp for the night after I ran it.
Although it must sound like it, I'm not here for an arguement. I honestly only watched the video to put faces to the wheelers who would trash a trail that I love dearly. I wheel here in Arizona quite a bit, and chances are that I would know them or run across them in the future. I'm glad to say that I'd be proud to wheel with any of them, in my opinion that video could be a promotional for the TreadLightly group. That trail ain't no forest road, and in my honest opinion a half-revolution of tire slippage isn't 'wheel spin'. I felt it necessary to post this in case someone else reads your opinions and might have a bad impression about the people involved without actually watching the video. I'd invite anyone who might feel that way to watch the first 10 minutes at least- I know an hour is a long time to watch other people wheel- you can rest assured that it doesn't get any worse. My compliments to the organizers and especially Rim Country 4 Wheelers- you all did yourselves proud.

Spike, I concure - there was absolutely nothing in that video that even begins to damage the trail. The spotting was effective for those that needed it, and I saw no wholesale stacking being done.
From what I've seen via pics, Pyeatt Draw is very typical of the rock trails in AZ. After the first major spring flood/monsoon runoff there is no evidence the area has ever been used. Having 2 to 3 feet of flood water moving at 20+ MPH tends to be a pretty effective eraser...
The video also clearly states the road in was slick. The area is typical of AZ - the roads get slick due to the high clay content or the materials used to "improve" it, yet the surface is wet only a 1/2" or so deep in most cases. The only time serious damage can occure is during the spring melt, and most roads are closed by the USFS if the area is sensitive.

I come from a country where there is zero offroad drving, i am not talking about minimal, I am talking about none. Sure there are half mile dirt roads across the odd farmers field and a few worn out real roads but in both cases they are roads, the only place you can drive in trail like conditions are used quarries and things like that for which you have to pay for.
My opionion is that I don't drive trails for the sake of it, I drive them to get to where I want to go. Likewise, I don't drive on obsticales just for the hell of it, to test my axle flex or to generally show off. I don't do this in case I break the truck, get it stuck or tip it up and lose all the fluids, all of which have varying degrees of consequence for the environment. Finally I do not attempt to drive on anything where there is any risk of spinning a wheel, leave 'NO' trace means just that, it does not mean leave a little bowl at the bottom of every obstical where somebody was spinning their wheels. These bowls cause water to do more errosion than it normally would and in some cases has caused the trails to become one way.
The above does not mean I only drive dirt roads, far from it. What it does mean is if the weather is against me I'll take it easy or even turn around and make a note to go back when the conditions are better.
Since Pyeatt has been getting so much press it needs special care, above and beyond what is normal. It depressing to back to a once popular trail when everybody has moved on to the next cool place to find vandalism, trash, car parts, more car parts which have been shot up, oil slicks, ruts and black on rocks etc. I am not saying the people in the video were doing all of these things but we are all part of the problem and only we can fix it.
I am not here to argue, I was just stating my point of view so lets agree to disagree as everytbody thinks their opinion is correct.

Rob,
Guess we take our freedoms a bit too much for granted here in the Great State of Arizona. The opportunities we have for access to State Trust, BLM, National Forest, and even National Monuments and Parks is pretty amazing. I've got literally thousands of miles of dirt roads and trails in the 75 miles surrounding my home - from graded to stuff so extreme I'm happy to watch, but won't EVEN attempt to drive it.
The "wash" trails are examples of both the best and the worst of OHV use. When used properly, they provide a similar rush to any other extreme sport like rock climbing, back country skiing, or parachuting. When used badly, it make those of us who are responsible look very bad. I guess the same applies to other sports like hunting/shooting...
People like myself take great care to avoid environmental damage, and carry the same type of equipment mandated by SCCA road rally rules for contaminant mitigation/removal. We participate in cleanups, always take out others trash, and in general, leave the place in better shape than we found it.
I'd really like to have you come over and join us some time for an easy run - I think you'd enjoy it!

You'll see a couple of us do it and make it look easy...then you'll start thinking "damn, I bet I could get the big orca whale-mobile over that without any problem....", and then we'll spot you over it, and then you'll pry the seat out of your :shakin:, and then you'll wonder why you even thought twice about it....

Yer right....but I've already done that obstacle. 4 bent rear d-shafts out of 5 80's. I've already had the fun experience on ShaftEater. :chowtime:

By the way Brian....we're hoping you'll try to bypass the ShaftEater and climb right up the rock wall instead. I bet you could make it. The far right side of this pic:

No problem - it's got great notches for d'shafts at several points.

Wrong Brian. :) I was referring to Goodtimes.
Well, none of us folks in MWB or LWB would try that line. I'd have a V-cracked Cruiser afterwards.
Mike McDonald said he thought Leo could get his D90 up that rock face. I think Goodtimes Brian and 40-series DaktariEd have shot though.

Not sure Crawler976 could climb that either? Be neat to try. I think SWB is needed.

That's the one BYPASS I don't plan to do again. (ShaftEater) Goodtimes is on a mission to get the Toyota Boeing 767 owner to do it any how. For some reason, Brian's been the only person to get me to do things nobody else can. Damn. He's coming! :hehe:

Dennis (Alacran on some boards) in his white Cherocar has done it, along with several other Cherocars and a CJ- all with winches (some of them didn't drive away- worse driveshaft carnage than Shafteater will ever produce). I know of only one guy who has done it without any help, in a Nissan Frontier ('slightly' modded). I'm sure any decent buggy could do it. I'd try it if I had a winch, but I'd probably better wait for that and some stronger rear control arms I'm planning to make.

OK, once past the "filter" as the ledge is called, is there an exit prior to the final obstical? Without a winch, I'm not gonna play on that...

The 'filter' is the name for the final obstacle, shown on page 6 in posts 53 and 54. That's the end of the trail. 'Shafteater' (as Shottz has named it) is the bypass for the ledge pictured on page 13 in post #129. The LandCruiser in that pic has just navigated 'Shafteater' (and incidentally was the only LC to navigate it without driveshaft damage that day, other than mine- which was repaired and moved up out of the way after it got eaten the last time I ran it).
Most people who don't plan on running the Filter exit the trail before Shafteater, at the last point the forest road crosses the creekbed. That forest road crossing marks the change between 'Lower' and 'Upper' Pyeatt Trail. After exiting Lower, you can follow the forest road a couple of hundred yards and park right above the Filter and watch the fun there.
I would personally rate Lower as a 3.5 on a 5 scale, with Upper being a 4-4.5, as it requires a winch.

FYI:
For those of ya who are camping tomorrow, keep an eye peeled after dark - the Leonid meteor shower is gonna be occuring! While we're not in a prime viewing location, there should still be more meteors than normal.
It's a also a new moon, so one ones you do see should be BRIGHT!

Actually the Leonids are not visible here in AZ.
It will be an East Coast show and maybe only for 30 minutes: Leonids (http://skytonight.com/observing/home/4663951.html)
Sorry about that!
I had been looking forward to them, then discovered that Leo won't be visible...shoot!

Well..I'm chasing a problem with my 100-series, but I'm bringing it any how. It's making a low-pitched "springy" type of vibration sound from the rear axle area when I hit a bump. It lasts for a second or so then is quiet.
We found my upper rear arm bushings were toast and my dude slapped new arms on yesterday. The sound's still there but he's unavailable.
I know he felt around under there already, though he stopped when he found the bad bushings. So, something else is still wrong.
I'll be at the meeting place at 9 AM if anybody who knows trucks could take a peek before the run. I'd sure appreciate it. If not...I'll count on Land Cruiser reliability to get me home. :088:

Ok, I am looking to get a little more clear on plan for camp tomorrow night.
The only thing I know is that Houston Mesa Road comes out just north of town and heads NE. Then, it intersects Pyeatt Draw Road (NF-198).
Are there camps near that intersection (where it looks like the trail to the Draw starts)?
I will be on CB4 and monitor 146.460.
I do not know what time yet. Probably leave Prescott around 3:30 pm.

Scott: I think there's more camping spots once you top the mesa closer to the start of the trail.
We'll be motel-ing it. If anyone needs me my cell is 520-975-1723. This is my last post. SEE YA!

Although the Leonids are not visible, you may be able to see Comet Swan:
Comet SWAN is still in good view for binoculars and telescopes in the western sky after dusk this week, though it's much faded from a couple weeks ago. At least there's no more moonlight. It's crossing southeastern Hercules, as shown at right; you'll need the detailed chart. See our online article and the November Sky & Telescope, page 60.
Look due west about 15 degrees above the horizon...

Rig is packed and ready to go and I just got home from a few hours of work, and my wife is taking her mom to the hospital. She has been having some chest pains and numbness so I'm pretty sure we won't be there today.
If it turns out everything is OK then we will try to be there tomorrow.
