This is being centered around a stomp to Puerto Penasco to see Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers (http://www.azpeacemakers.com/) at "Circus Mexicus." It's supposed to be one wild celebration of life through song and drink.

But on Sunday October 15, I'm planning on driving to Caborca and cross back into the Motherland at Sasabe. I want to see some sites at Tubutama and Oquitoa (between Caborca/Sonoyta), as I understand there are some old missions and cool things to see there. Can anyone verify?

Since I no longer trust any map of Mexico, is there a direct route from Penasco to Caborca, or do I have to backtrack to Sonoyta on Mex 8?

Mexico veterans: would you happen to have any advice, maps, or suggestions to share?

!Gracias! :costumed-smiley-007

Mark congratulations, you will be doing almost the same area that I am presently planning, however I will be going into Mexico thru Sasave down to Caborca, then continue down to El Desemboque make a short cut thru Ejido Gen. Alvaro Obregon up to Puertp Penasco.
I saw a documentary on The Desert Speaks and would like to explore the Missions around Caborca, seems like it would be dirt road fron Sasave to Caborca, then I will be on pavement all the way to El Desemboque were I will be taking a short cut thru some deep sand ( should be fun ) then I will be hitting the pavement again in a very narrow road to Puerto Penasco( this area has many Esteros ) almost no traffic. I will be continue on to El Pinacate a great area to explore with many craters.

Here are some map links of the area, and they are fairly accurate!

Mark, there is a direct route to Caborca from Penasco. When you get into town, turn left at the police station and that road will take you to Caborca. I have not travelled it in years, but it was not any different than any other Mexican highway, and I don't think it has changed much.

They put a huge resort on the road from Penasco to Caborca about 20 miles SE of Penasco. The Mayan Palace, At the first round about before Penasco take the road to Caborca and you will bypass Penasco, you will see signs for The Mayan Palace and Caborca.

You can also turn left at the police station in Penasco and mentioned above.

Tons of newer homes and old cabins along the beach SE of Penasco, you can not see them from the Highway.

And do not forget to stop by Santo Tomas, these are great beaches and i would stop, i was looking for some pictures of the road, however I could not find them in my computer. The road is very narrow and it is not like the regular hwy from Sonoita to Puerto Penasco.:gunt:

Last trip I picked up a very good Mexico atlas...in Mexico...which is in Spanish, but is nonetheless easy to read, I'll check out your route tonight and let you know if it's any good...I could send or fax you maps...

This would be fantastic. I'd be interested to see what your maps look like compared to mine. I've found them to be highly suspicious; I got into trouble by just trusting my maps. Send 'em on down, though! Would love to cross reference.

Thanks

Oh yes! Sorry about that. I should have confirmed. Those scans are right off of one of the maps I have -- and it's quite inaccurate at times. I appreciate your contribution regardless! If you are trusting that map, be ye warned..... :)

HEY! Wait a sec. When you say these maps are fairly accurate, have you travelled the area before? Can you make any more recommendations about it?

Thanks amigo!

Well I have used them before, and yes i have travel from Puerto Penasco to Caborca even before they made it a free zone, there used to have a check point almost half way thru, and it used to be a small dirt road, however they pave the path and now it is in good condition. Be warn it is narrow! You will be able to travel this road, and will save you some time. Here is one of the pictures I found an Estero by Bahia san Jorge. This is from Penasco to Caborca hwy past the Mayan Resort.

I've found that the GuiaRoji maps are generally pretty good. Not infallible though, just pretty good.

I always find ways to find my way around, maps are good, however they are not always very accurate, so that is why I mention before maps are fairly accurate.

Gawl dangit. Due to the RAIN at Rainbow Bridge this weekend, I'm postponing that trip until the 13th when it's supposed to be like this: :sunny:

Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers will have to celebrate life without us next weekend. However, I'll be doing this Sonora Stomp tomorrow and Sunday instead. Anyone in the area feel like going? I know, last minute. But miracles do happen.

Good question. It looks something like this: :smiley_drive:
Except we'll be doing it through some obscure Sonora, Mexico towns and visiting some of ol' Kino's missions.

Okay, okay. Stomp? It's sounds a lot like treading unlightly, don't it? <insert spitting and fondling crotch here> I thought I was being clever and alliterative with Sonora Stomp. :violent-smiley-031:

It means we're going to take a fun route to Penasco, stay one night, and come home. Wanna go?

Ah, I see. No wonder google laughed at me when I typed that in.....

Sorry, no can go. I have my jeep all torn up making some last minute mods before the ExTrophy. I need to get it back together tomorrow so I can go to Martinez Canyon on Sunday....and hopefully grocery shopping too (the fridge is getting pretty barren). If you take the eastern route (I-19/I-10), give me a hollar so we can grab a beer on your way through....

Mark, I flipped the dates on your two recent adventure threads. Let me know if I got it right or if we need to change it. How was mexico??

What about Clyne & the PM's?

:) Looks good, thanks Chris. Moderator Extraordinaire.

Roger and the boys will still be celebrating life on the 13 and 14 (they didn't respond to my requests to swap weekends. Friggin' rock stars). Brooke and I will be hiking to Rainbow Bridge instead.

Mexico: MMMM! We traveled a couple bouncy roads, and one that we probably shouldn't have done alone...but it was cool! :truck: Yet we made it to the sleepy fishing village of El Desemboque on the Sea of Cortez in good time. We passed up Peņasco altogether. I'll post some photos and a short report in a few days.
