I'm trying to decide between Scepter cans or Wedco cans. I know I want the non-CARB cans as I've heard nothing good about them.

USMC uses Scepter. They are tough but I've seen that they do leak a bit.
http://www.pangaea-expeditions.com/scepter/

NATO uses Wedco. Supposedly they dont leak a drop.
https://www.expeditionexchange.com/wedco/

Both are priced similarly. Opinions???

Thanks in advance for the input. These will be a bit of an investment so I want the best.

Tough call -- also what seems to be an endless debate!
There are several other threads that address the same issue.
In the end I believe it comes down to personal preference.

I use a Wenco can and like the closure

But if I'm ever in the market for cans again, I like the lightweight plastic of the Scepter.

I notice that my Scepter leaks. Minutely for sure, but it does seep out of the lid. It might be defective...or that just might be life. :yikes:

I have both Scepter and NATO cans and the scepter does seem to seep a little, even when I crank it down as much as I can. I like the lighter weight of the scepter can though.

I have Scepter cans. To tighten the cap, or the spout, I do it as tight as I can by hand and then use a strap wrench to tighten it just a bit more. They don't leak after that.

The Scepter cans will never rust FWIW.

Also, these http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=201701 look exactly the same as the Wedco can for alot less... Are these Wedco cans I wonder???

I don't want any part of a gas can that tends to leak.

I have Wedco and they don't leak.

I'm still on the Wedco/NATO surplus side, although I know some who have had good luck with Scepter cans. You just can't beat that lever-locking seal on the NATO-style can. No way to get that much pressure on the gasket on the Scepter top, I think, even with a strap wrench.

I think I may go with the "old school" Wedco cans. I hate the smell of gas, and that stuff is too expensive to loose a drop unnecessarily...

I'm of the opinion that both are great products. I have the Wedco cans but will be trying the Scepter cans too.

I have two of each in gas and water - I have had no leaking issues with either cans - the nato cans get dinged and start to look bad and rust - the nato cans for water start to rust at the very edge of the rim ( not coated to well there) The scepter gas cans - while I have not had them leak they really puff up in the heat - I use a super syphon to load gas back in the vehicle -

Don't think the scepter is a long term can -in the end I still lean to the nato for fuel

I have two Wedco NATO cans which I coated with Herculiner. I carry them laying on their side in Wilderness rack (rubber mat underneath) and have never had a leak in four years. Never had Scepter, so cannot speak for them.

Those are NATO style military surplus cans. the Wedco brand name cans are based off of the same design but I doubt Wedco made those Swiss Military cans.

Note that the NATO style military surplus cans are usually just a bit heavier duty than the Wedco as they use a slightly thicker steel for the can.

Lots of good souces out there for mlitary surplus cans - as low as $9 each

I ordered a Wedco fuel can, spout, and jerry can holder from Expedition Exchange.

https://www.expeditionexchange.com/wedco/

This will solve my extra fuel problem for now.

I spoke with Ho at Expedition Exchange today... They will not ship a regular (non carb) gas can to a CA address :smilies27

So, I need to find a way to get one of these outlaw fuel cans.

Doc.......!

I'm getting pretty fed up with Kalifornia!

I recently had to rush and buy a new battery for a trip I was making....so it was off to Wally~World.........it turns out that Kalifornia now regulates the Kold Krank Amps that you can buy in Kalifornina!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I was only able to quickly get a 525cca battery for my 4Runner as I had to leave immediately for my Colorado trip.

I was REALLY upset!

I should have got a new one in Colorado.....and told them my new Kalifornia battery is not working properly!

.....hehe:sombrero:

I know this is kinda off topic....but not really since we all know Kalifornia is starting to suck more and more!

Somebody get me outta here!!!!!!!!!:friday:

Wow, this is a new one. Strange, too, because I can't imagine that there are that many people puting larger-than-necessary batteries in their cars that someone had to legislate against doing so. Crazy.

I have a Scepter gasoline "can" and it doesn't leak a drop. The Scepter Military Fuel Can is the only one that is allowed to be transported on an aircraft while filled with gasoline.

I had three Scepter water cans that would seep if carried on their side. I contacted the Scepter Customer Contact link on their website and had three replacements at no charge within a day. They didn't even ask for proof of purchase or to have the seepers back.

That's customer service and standing behind your product!

I've also used the Scepter cans with no issues although never in the heat of the southern states. Max temp here is 35 degrees celcius. In the Scepter Can Review (http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2555) thread I gave my impressions (http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=35311&postcount=7) on the Scepter cans but will also say that customer service from Scepter is excellent.

Can't comment on the other cans since I have never used them.

Cheers,
P

If your attending the Expo event you can get one at a Checkers autoparts in AZ. Or you can have EE send it to one of the zonies attending.

I have a number of Scepter cans, both gas and water. I sometimes carry them on their side, and have never had a problem with them leaking. I crank the lids down hard, but don't use any tools. I like them.

The only drawback I am aware of is that it seems that most can holders will hold Wedco but not Scepter.

Try eBay. Search for "Scepter can". There's a seller offering new tan Scepter water cans for $39.95 (no affiliation).

i went for the wedco/ NATO surplus.

the only reason i think the military switched to the plastic is when a fuel depot gets shelled there wont be any metal schrapnel coming from the exploding gas cans. the plastic ones also burn much safer.

2 situations that i will hopefully never need to worry about with the nato gas and water cans that i have. they never leak and never vent any fumes. I routenley fill my metal cans at low elevation and take them to 10k'+ or fill them in 40º weather and take them to the desert 100º+ weather. they are rock solid. pair it up with a swiss nozzle and you can drain a 5 gal tank faster than a gas pump.

I have 4 Scepter fuel cans and 4 scepter water cans, and have had absoloutley no leaks with any of them. They can swell up with a pressure differential, but it doesnt worry me. If you want, you can always vent them if they swell excessivley.

For water cans, I order them from Brigade Quartermasters
For fuel cans, I get them off ebay. Used and new ones are usually commonplace, but new ones arent cheap.

More importantly, for fuel can parts, go to www.dstactical.com . I've ordered multiple times from them in the past and they are great guys if you call them up with questions. They are located in Canada, thus their selection of Scepter stuff, but will ship any Scepter parts to the US as long as they arent the actual fuel cans themselves. I ordered the red straps for the caps to make it DOT legal to carry OD green color cans.
