View Full Version : '99 4Runner build

So I have finally decided to get off my bum and start a build thread. Shes a '99 4Runner, 3.4L V6, 5spd manual :wings:, and a fake hood scoop thingy. Unfortunately, I slacked and forgot to get pictures of her when I first got her, so no bone stock shots. So far, I have installed my ARB bumper w/M8000 and viking synthetic, Yakima cross members holding a DII Front Runner rack, limb risers, switches and wiring for the ARB compressor/lockers that will be going in, and a Blue Sea Systems fuse block. I will post up the latest pics tomorrow when I have access to a camera and the truck at the same time, but here are some with just the ARB.

I already have the compressor and front locker, I just need to fab up a mount as engine bay space is SEVERELY limited and then find time to set up the front end. I'm still in the air on moding the rear axle housing for an E-locker or putting an ARB back there as well. I also have a set of OME881's for the front, when I have some more money I will pick up the shocks and rear springs. Also when money is more available, I'm going to put a Tacoma Safari Snorkel on it (I've already run the breathers up into the engine bay to plumb into the snorkel and packed all electrical connectors with dielectric).

Engine bay space is limited but i just put my CKMA12 in on monday and i put it on the drivers side in between the brake booster and fender. On the fender. If you want to get REAL technical, (i tried but failed) you can put it on the firewall between the booster and fender. I didnt have enough patients to do it. My 4runner is currently getting yukon 4.88s and my rear locker installed. Also for the fuse block put it dead center on the firewall just above the pinch weld, and right below the hood. Fits perfect, there are some hoses that kind of get in the way but nothin to bad. Thats where i put mine, and wired it to only have power when the DRL are on (have to change that soon).

Good looking truck. Not sure about the 99 model engine bay, but with my 98 I had to move the CC to mount the air on a custom bracket. It was well worth the time spent getting the proper fit.

Clark White

I'm going to build a bracket to mount the compressor in-between the ABS and CC, right above the AC sensor. I started to put the fuse block in that exact same spot on the pinch weld, dead center, but after running the harness for the compressor through the firewall, I decided I really didn't want to do that every time I wanted to power something new in the cab. My truck only has one pass through on the far drivers side below the master cylinder and it is a pain to run new wires through it. I want to seal it back up too, on my Taco every time I had a deep water crossing, I would have a hose under my dash coming through the pass through. I ended up mounting the fuse block on the left side of the rear seat, there is a perfect little area there that is out of the way, easily accessible, and it will be easy to conceal the power cables going to it. From there it will be easy to wire anything inside the cab.

Unfortunately no, I still have the stock springs on it, waiting on a paycheck, maybe two, before I purchase the rest of the lift.

I've seen those winch savers before, they look pretty good. Right now I have it pretty well sucked in and wedged against the fairlead, but it would be nice to have something a little less funky.

So that isn't a sport hood?

Yes, it is a sport hood. I call it a fake scoop because it is plugged off and not functional in any way. Even if it didn't have the plug, it wouldn't really do any good, except channel more water down on top of the engine when I find deep water. I guess it looks kinda cool though!

I wanted it in the cab so that I wouldn't have to run wires through the firewall every time I add something (it is a quite the pain to get wires through the only pass through!). That (or same spot on passenger side) was the most out of the way place, yet still easily accessible place that I could find. It is also an easy place to run the power and ground cables under the carpet and door frames to keep it real clean looking.

Well this weekend I installed an ARB in the front Dif. I'll get some pictures of the setup when I'm all done mounting the air compressor (right now it's wedged and zip tied into place awaiting a welder to build the frame). So far I'm really happy with the setup though.

For the bumper end I drilled a hole in the tube and welded on a tab to bolt the swedged end onto.

For the rack end, I swedged on a ball end, drilled out a hole just barley larger then the ball on the top of the rack, then used a Dremel to grind a notch the size of the cable into the leading edge of the rack.

Clark: Very nice. As the new owner of an old '99, I'm jealous of your green paint job and your super-cool hood scoop (but I still wouldn't trade them for my E-locker. :p )

Would like to know more about your suspension. Did you just put in the OME coils and leave everything else stock including the shocks or did you upgrade the shocks, too?

Your '99 looks very much like I'd like mine to look eventually. Re: The ARB bumper, am I right in thinking that there is not actually an ARB for the 3rd Gen 4runners specifically but that an ARB for a 1st gen Taco can be made to fit? If so, what mods did you have to do in order to get it to fit? An ARB is high on my list of 'wants' but I want to upgrade the suspension first.

They're limb risers. Theoretically they are for lifting branches out of the way when driving down a narrow overgrown trail. However, to be honest I put them on there to be used as clothes lines and so I could feel cool (though I do drive a lot of narrow trails, and they do help).

Thanks! So far I'm actually running stock suspension/265x70R16, but soon (I HOPE!) I will be putting the OME setup on. I have a set of 881's for the front, and I will be getting a set of either 890 or 891's for the rear. I haven't decided on the shocks yet, but you do need to replace them (they need to be a longer then stock strut). The reason I am looking at the 891's is because I will be building a rear bumper much like OldSven's, and that combined with camping gear for two or more people and water for extended desert stay will weigh quite a bit. I have $1600 worth of front suspension on my Tacoma (Icons, Camburg uppers, etc.) and while they are really nice, the longer travel broke many right CV's. I have run more than my fair share of 4.5 (out of 5) trails with it and never found it to make enough of a difference to justify the cost for what I do. I do recommend a front dif drop kit as it helps out a lot on CV angle.

As for the ARB bumper, you are correct in that there is no 3rd Gen 4Runner ARB, but that a Tacoma bumper will fit. When you take off the stock 4Runner bumper (I kick myself for not taking pic's) there are two plates welded to the ends of the frame. You need to grind these off in order to mount the ARB. It's a fairly simple job, you can either grind them off completely (leaving the frame ends open), or just grind off the sides that protrude from the frame (keeping the center as an end cap on the frame). I chose the rout of completely removing them, and will weld on a heftier end camp (the ARB is supposed to have a bolt on either side that goes horizontally into that end cap). I stripped out the end caps on my Taco and never did replace them, so I am in no hurry to weld them on the 4Runner. I have heard they are critical, but after MANY hard recoveries, the three bolts on either side going vertically into the frame have yet to budge in the least.

Clark

P.S. I WISH I HAD AN E-LOCKER! That thing was/is awesome on the Taco, and I really wish I had it on the 4Runner as well.

Finally got off my butt and ran the wires for the fuse block today. I'm still looking for a 100-110amp breaker to put on the battery, but otherwise it is done. I run the power cable through the firewall and along the kick boards with the factory harness (white wire).

nice job on the runner so far!

As for the fuse block ...that seems like a spot that could see some water or moisture especially if you plan on finding some deeper water (snorkel) like you mentioned. Just a thought.. and maybe you already considered this!?

I was actually able to use a pre-existing bolt hole with anchor nut on the back side to mount the breaker :costumed-smiley-007 I'm not sure what it is there for, but apparently some option that I thankfully do not have!

Thanks! I did think of this actually, and while it is a concern squirming around at the back of my head, I don't plan (key word being plan!) on sitting in water deep enough, long enough, to flood that terminal block. However, if I do submerge it, I'm honestly not that worried as I have submerged fuse blocks before and not had any problems with shorting. I guess only time will tell, but I think it is safer there then under the hood. That and I really like the fact that its being in the cab means I won't have to run wires through the firewall every time I want to add something inside (this also means I can reseal the pass through on the firewall).

Thanks guys! There is also some room under the right rear seat where the jack is, though I think only a 6 circuit block would fit, might be a little tight for a 12. Top of the firewall in the engine compartment would be a great place too, but to me half the reason for the block is to limit the wires going through the firewall (and hence leaving a hole to later become a fire hose in water crossings, ask how I know!) so that's why I put it inside.

Only thing I want to improve on is insulation at the terminals, both on the breaker and the block. Not sure what the best option is that will still enable me to remove things if I need. Probably just make them all a little more permanent and use the spray on electrical tape?

Wired up an Engel Posi Lock in the factory cigarette lighter position. I tryed to fit it in so I could have both plugs, but due to the body panels behind the plastic there, that position is the only place with room behind for the long plugs. Maybe I will eventually squeeze the cig plug in next to it if I can find a way to mount it.

Mounted an old WWII shovel on the window sill in the rear. Got this idea from Weezerbot and her flashlight (I'll be putting a mag light in the same spot as her too :snorkel:) I did this because I don't feel it necessary to carry a full size shovel around all the time, but I do want this along all the time, and don't want it just loose.

I got the Front Runner from Paul at Equipt. I think my rack is almost identical to yours (think I looked at buying yours?). I went with this one because it was supposed to be narrower (48") then yours, but as it turned out it's pretty much the same dimensions (55") as yours is/was.

I am very pleased with the ride quality of this setup. It rides almost as well as a Cadillac but with far better off road performance. The one thing I need to change are the 10mm bolts that hold the fender flare in place. One in particular sticks out and at full stuff on the left side it catches the tire lugs and makes for some horrid noises (though fairly harmless).

I have some lighting mods in the mail...LED dome lights and some LED strip lights to go under the hood and on the rear hatch. After that, my next major projects are going to be to get off my but and install the HAM, and also to make a table for the rear.

The table is going to be 1.5' deep by 3' wide, and will fit over the rear bumper with cables going to the outer corners almost identical to a trucks tailgate. When stored (the reason for the dimensions) the table will be attached to the hatch so that it swings up and is completely out of the way. :coffeedrink:

Nice truck!

I have a 2001 sr5 with the fat flares so it was a bit different than you have but also had that same annoying bolt head grabbing the tire lugs. It actually started to cause some damage to the tires so I ended up just removing the bolt. Havn't needed to replace it.

What kind of cross bar are you using at the front of the rack? It looks nice and low, which is where I want the rack to sit. How tall are the spacers you needed? I am thinking of building a full length rack and need an additional crossbar option. Thanks.

Sorry to bring back the dead, but did you do a write up on the snorkel install? Thats coming for me soon and trying to get my ducks in a row.

If this is for your '02 4Runner (well, all 3rd Gen 4Runners actually), Yep--Tacoma snorkel: ARB p/n Part Number SS170HF. And you also need the Tacoma intake tube that is inside the fender (replaces the 4Runner one that's in there). Its part number 53807-35020. Supposedly some of the earlier years 3rd gens had the same tube already...but your '02 won't.

You also have to do something about the power antenna if you have it. The most popular thing to do is to pull the power antenna out and replace it with a non-electric assembly and a whip style antenna. I read one other thing where a guy flipped his power antenna around or something. I pulled out that crappy electric antenna assembly and went with the Tacoma whip antenna. Works great for me. Antenna Assembly is part number 86300-35090, Tacoma Whip antenna part number is 86309-AA040. The antenna assembly comes with a silver antenna so you don't need the tacoma whip unless you want a black whip antenna.

(Good Thread on YotaTech for Whip Antenna info (http://www.yotatech.com/f2/whip-antenna-question-84703/))

Other than that, it fits right up and it didn't seem much different than other snorkel installs and that ExpeditionsWest link is A+++++ so def check it out.

Sorry all for taking so long to respond! Been busy and had not been keeping up here. For the cross bar I am just using the Yakima 48" with Q Towers? I think they are called. Almost exact same setup as the rear two (besides being fixed not adjustable). The reason it is so low is because of the slant in the roof and because I mounted the Q Towers further out on the sides rather then inline with the other two cross bars. This was done partly for strength reasons (closer to the corner the stronger the roof), but mostly because there were some pre-existing holes there from the previous owner and I didn't want to drill more holes then I needed.

I looked long and hard and couldn't find any prefab options that would mount the rack any lower. Your best bet for lowering the height of the rack (if your not building your own crossbars) is in how you mount the rack to the crossbars. The way I have it set up now, it sits pretty high. If you are interested, I will get some pictures this weekend of how I did it and maby try to explain how I will someday lower it when I get off my lazy butt.

Other than that, it fits right up and it didn't seem much different than other snorkel installs and that ExpeditionsWest link is A+++++ so def check it out.

No need to ditch the power antenna. I kept mine... just be patient, and don't get worried... you can't get AIDS from your truck (Only your knuckles will be bleeding)!

You have to roll down the pass window, open the pass door and reach your hand in through the gap... push it past the sheet metal tabs that will cut you... position the snorkel on the tube then hold the snorkel in place with right hand and tighten the rear bolt with left. Then you can slip a wrench in above the tube for the top bolt and tighten... 1/8 turn at a time. Then tighten the bottom bolt, which is easy, put the fender back together and you are done. The only thing you will have to do is slightly bend the power antenna mounting plate towards the engine compartment, and it will fit... be careful not to damage the dust cover on the antenna motor. I guess this is harder than I thought... the next time I take my fender apart, I will take some pics of mine. Took me three hours to do the work, three weeks for the scabs to go away. Glad I still have my antenna.

I was planning add a snorkel to my wife's 2001 Runner this spring. I got one from previous gen Tacoma. It sits in my basement since Christmas.
Didn't know that I need Tacoma tube.

Use plenty of di-electric grease... you want it sealed and you don't want to have to get in there more than once. The goal is to be able to put a plastic bag over the snorkel and have the engine sputter out!

It has been quite a while since I have posted anything on my truck, but I really haven't done anything to it for quite a while. However, the last few weeks it has cooled off and I have been able to work in the garage with out melting, so I finally got off my butt and did some work to the old girl:

Crash bars or what ever you want to call them, tied into sliders

Non-skid along the top of the sliders to make it easier to use them as a step.

Over head lighting and kitchen table. The lights are operated by a switch on the side of the hatch, table isn't finished yet but will be supported by cables coming down from brackets on the side of the tail lights.

Haha, yeah. People actually comment on the pin-striping before almost anything else. I'm rather proud of it too, shows the mark or a true field vehicle, not just something for show (no offense to those with shiny paint jobs still...) :victory:

Ah yes, the Toyota 4runner Green. I love it, but MAN O MAN does it ever show any spec of dirt and every single scratch. :victory:
Truck looks good, especially with the pinstriping. gives it character.
