Got a question for all 1st gen. owners on their seats. Seems my back can't take the oem seats anymore and am having MAJOR indecision issues. Bought salvage yard toy seats only to find that they were too wide. Then on the other end of the spectrum, I almost bought a pair of full support seats for a gazillion dollars. Gazillion dollar seats in a stock '82 truck does'nt seem right.
I'm 6-0, 235lbs and driving is 100 miles min. for any adventure.
Thanks in advance!

What truck do have have....exactly?
My 1988 4Runner has the SR5 fully adjustable seat, with Lumbar Support.
I have no problem taking a 1,500 mile drive with them.

Yes stock.
But it's the SR5 Upgrade.
If they would fit.....I think you would really be happy with them.
There is a Lever for extra Lumbar Support on the right side of the drivers seat!
The side wings actually help hold you in!:victory::costumed-smiley-007:smiley_drive::ylsmoke:

That's what I'm talking about! but aren't they rare to find? Isn't the newer body style a little wider?
Found the camera...

I have a '90 stardard cab with a bench seat. First thing I bought was the exspensive seats, they looked real nice but I didn't fit at all (I am 6'3") and they were very hard and uncomfortable. I ended up returning them and still have a bench seat, which for any long trips is very uncomfortable.
Here are the aftermarket seats I first bought.

Personally I like the SR5 seats but I have seen some Beard seats in a standard cab that look nice but I need a wide to fit right, so with 2 wide width seats in a standard cab it is the same width as a bench. I think I would find good upholstery shop to recover and add new foam to your stock seats.

You asked about 1st Gen. seats.
I have a 1988 1st generation 4Runner. That's why I answered.
Maybe some other guys can chime in with newer Taco's and 4Runners. Maybe the newer seats are even better?
I would think you could make any seat work.....as long as you are willing to drill some holes in your floor. And Plug some old holes, so water does not get in during your extreme deep water crossings!
Oh! Didn't I tell you.....once you start making changes, you are going to need a Snorkel....ya know! :victory::elkgrin::ylsmoke:

I'm having problems, eigther with myself or the computer, in showing my recovered crappy seats. Getting newer SR5 seats seem like the hot ticket.
The snorkel is way down the list of things to do. along with torpedo tubes

My seats suck. The gap between the back and the seat bottom suck my *** in . Takes me five min. to walk up-right again

not much easier to find than the SR5 seats, but I swapped these '89 celica AllTrac Turbo seats into my '88 runner

your best bet is to take some measurements, draw a picture of how everything mounts up and run around a junkyard with your tape measure . . . I got those seats for $10 a piece
Where do you live? I'm guessing not in PA . . .

I have '88 SR-5 seats in my 1st gen 4runner. and i absolutely love them. I too have back troubles. If i don't have a seat with lumbar support i can't drive more than a couple hunded miles without paying for it the next day. however with my SR-5 seats i drove up to AK from CO with ZERO troubles. i find them to be more comfortable that even the mastercraft seats. i would keep an eye out for a good set. even if you have to pay a few bucks more for them i think it's worth it.

I own an 86 4Runner, 88 4Runner SR5, 2003 Tacoma and a 1995 BMW 740.
The BMW 740 has the best seats (but I wouldn't want to retrofit them into anything.. they weight a ton!) The 88 SR5 seats are a close second to them... They are much better than the 03 Tacoma and 86 DLX seats.
My 88's seats are exactly like "Scenic WonderRunner"'s seats, down to the color. They offer a lot of adjustability to change up the support on your back during long trips. Considering their age, you can probably find them pretty cheap.
I'd recommend that you watch Craigslist for someone parting out a Toyota with SR5 seats.

I had an '88 4Runner SR5 and it had the best seats I've ever sat in in a truck - including my 2005 Tacoma TRD seats which are a close 2nd place IMO.
The newer 05+ TRD seats are pretty darn good although not as adjustable as the gen 1 seats IMO
