View Full Version : Countries Visited: Resource

Expedition Portal members are a well-traveled group. I was considering the other day that it is likely all but a few obscure or restricted countries have been visited.

The thought of assembling a list of all of the countries, and the members that have visited (or live in) them would be helpful for the rest of us as we travel. For example, I am considering another trip to Algeria and possibly Australia this year. It would be great to know who has been there as a possible resource.

I think that DiploStrat will win this list hands down! Wow, quite impressive.

Makes my list of 10 seem teeny tiny....

Nicely done Diplostrat!

As we add more countries, we can update our lists here.

We will also work on an interactive map too. Good stuff.

-- I started young, and
-- I do this for a living.

Far more impressive, perhaps, is a person who picks a few countries, finances their own trip, and stays long enough to learn the language, culture, etc.

Right now, there are only two countries that matter to me, well, I do worry about Chad/Sudan/Uganda a bit. :)

At least one overnight is my benchmark, there are a few more but I don't count inadvertant border crossings! Most was 22 in one year (I think).

Canada, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, England, Germany, Kosovo, Bosnia, Serbia, Italy, France, Afghanistan, Pakistan.

So that's what, 13? Plus the US (been in every state but Alaska and Hawaii).

Sad though, I really want to see Mexico, and it's so cheap and close for an American. :(

30 for me according to the territories in your list...

Can I make a suggestion though? To make this a little easier, and more connected, why not just add the "Countries I've visited" TripAdvisor App to the ExPo Facebook Group page, (is there one? I know there's an OJ one) and we can all join there and fill that in. Then it keeps the leaderboard, & displays a map for our individual pages.

Cheers,
Jay from...

Ok here's mine....its a rather long list, some self financed, some through work

I've been very lucky to have been able to have joined my love of travel and engineering together giving me a chance to see some of the most wonderful and weird places

Its not the quantity of countries that you simply visit that brings value to your life, its what you learn't from the experience.......

you can hit almost ten countries in one day in europe
but the only thing you'll touch are the garage forecourts when you stop to fill the tank

This is a fun thread. Making this list brings back a flood of memories. There are two countries from my list of thirtyseven that I did not spend a minimum of three overnights, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg. No overnighters at either, I have however visited Luxembourg 6-8 times. Visits to each of these nations was a wonderful experience and I will always cherish the memories...even Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bravo everyone!:victory:

There are at least another dozen on this board with 40+ countries, I am sure they will chime in soon. Doug Hackney and Graham Jackson come to mind. I know Doug has well into the 40s.

When I was in Morocco, I met a French man who had been to 70 countries. I asked him his favorite - Namibia. I need to go there :)

Lots of well traveled folks here!

I'm at about 33: Most of Western Europe, North America, A big chunk of South America and Southern/Eastern Africa. Nothing -- yet -- in Asia, Central America or Australasia. This is the first time I actually counted where I've been.

Curious omissions for a reasonably well traveled Brit: Ireland, Channel Islands (Jersey, etc.), Isle of Man, Scandinavia. I figured they'd always be there. Now I live in the USA, they're still there, just further away!

Cheers,
Graham

Canada for a few days
Quite a few Mexican visits

I must confess I have not been much beyond border town visits to Canada or Mexico. I hope to do further exploration, especially of Mexico in the coming years. About the only other places I really want to go are Italy, Spain and I would like to see some giraffes and assorted other critters in Africa.

Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti, Grand Cayman (lots of RRCs in grand cayman), Jamaica, Mexico, Panama...

I think there are more and I honestly cant remember. In 2006 and 2007 I did a lot of traveling, mostly within the US.

Not to hijack (sorta) but I need to know more about your "F1 days". What teams, what capacity, what timeframe? I would say a topic like this deserves a dedicated thread. I am a big F1 fan and would love to hear about your experiences.

"perhaps we should start a new thread called show your passport stamps....."

I know its probably a general comment but

I'l be quite happy to share my present passport, and my last full one

each one has 48 pages

but they only last ten years each and earlier ones I sent to my extranged daughter, one stolen in Trinidad and one lost in a taxi in Dover.

I have two passports at any one time due to visa delays and work issues

In my circle of friends i'm less travelled by many as i spend years in my work locations rather than still being on the flying squad.

My daughters 1.5 years old- she has 14 stamps in her passport

venezuela- UK -Oman -US - UAE - sri lanka

depending on your job and general travel you can easily rack up a multitude of countries,

once you pass the first step of actually getting a passport.

etc.

Scott,

It is clear that you set the bar too low on this one - ain't nobody on this thread been to less than a dozen countries! If your goal is really a "resource" then you need a table of countries where people can sign up as references - giving the date of their last travel, time in country, etc.

I'll probably not see every part of the USA before I die, but until I do I have no need to head elsewhere. Is this a limited perspective, or an acknowledgment of a huge land mass? I don't know.

Note: I am NOT criticizing anyone's choices in any way. This is just my choice.

So true. Lots to see and explore in our own backyard, getting out and enjoying the open spaces is the most important part. :REOutCampFire03:

Passed through:
East Germany (that was a hell of an experience)
Czechoslovakia

The total number depends on how you count them. Do I count East & West Germany as 1 country now? Do I count Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia as 1 country each, or as the multiple countries they both are now?

Depending on who you talk to, I can count the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Most people consider it occupied territory and not a country.

Well we have been overlanding since 1974, when we slept in Renault for a year exploring Europe, since then have managed to see most of Africa and North America and now planning a year overland journey across Central and South America. The most challenging countries have been Nigeria and Angola. We are planning to leave Canada this year and head south and then back. Should be fun cant wait to leave
The number of countries we have visited changes with the lists, so for this list we have traveled to are:

Nothing too exotic, but hopefully that's coming. Some of these are sorta cheating since some (not all) of the Caribean Islands were from a cruise (the horror!) and the Vatican City, well, was just a 3 hour experience.

I got a long way to catch up with some others. I should add a few this year with work and one with a surf trip. Also working on a South America trip for either this or next year.

For fun I took a look at how many states I've been to so far. I got 28 out of 50 plus DC. Lived in 3 - PA, FL, CA. I got the coasts covered but the midwest/south has some blank spots. Looks surprisingly like a Red/Blue map (or Republican/Democratic for the non-Americans).

Thanks for the list - because of name changes, etc I've been to a few more that don't exist any more. Of course, most of this travel is thanks to the US Military...

Of the places not on my list, the only countries/places I think I'd like to go to (just because) are New Zealand and Antarctica...

This is interesting seeing everyone's travel lists.

I've been to :

USA
Canada
Mexico
Guatemala
Honduras
El Salvador
Nicaragua
Costa Rica
Panama

I could be a reference for Northern and Western Nicaragua since I've spent about 4 months total living/traveling on that side of the country before moving to Matagalpa.

I'm hoping to check out RAAS or RAAN soon... maybe by road if Chavez funds construction of an all-season highway from Managua through Rio Blanco to Puerto Cabezas like has been rumored (http://www.confidencial.com.ni/archivo/2007-519/economia_519.html).

Cheers,

Agreed.............Chile is awesome. It's got everything that I'd ever want. I went there twice to climb these peaks.......Aconcagua (22,841') and Tupungato (21,490'). Then a third time I met Vic Hanson (member on this site) in Peru and we took his van and traveled for nearly 2 months in Peru, Chile, and Bolivia climbing peaks.

Great thread, I haven't tallied this list up in quite some time...

We have a long-running battle in my extended family about our country lists.

My rule is that you have to either spend the night or get laid. So that's the standard I used for the list below.

Furthermore, we only credit countries that existed at the time of your visit. For example, in our family competition, I get one country for visiting Yugoslavia in 1986, not four countries now that is has broken up. (But break-up is still good, you can go back, re-trace your steps and get four additional countries!) But since you guys have established different rules for the country list, I am quite happy to up my count...

"Mind if I ask what you do?"

I am a computer geek, currently with a full-time job, which I quit every once in a while and travel.

I blame my parents. We lived in Europe in the late 60s, and traveled around in a green '68 VW van - mom and dad on the fold-out bed, sister and brother shared the cot above the front seats, and I slept on the floor. After college, I spent a year and a half backpacking through Europe, North Africa, and Asia - that entire trip cost me less than US$10k, but I ate and slept in some truly stanky joints. After graduate school, my (now) wife and I traveled more through Asia. After 9 years at a high-tech company, I quit and we took a few years off for Australasia and then Africa. I am back at work, for now, coding and saving money for the next adventures: heading down South! (My mom is retired and is catching up on my country count - can't let that happen.)

Wow, first time I've looked at this thread...I win the 'country list' among my friends and family (my dad is a close 2nd), but I'm small change compared you guys!

US
England
China (both Eastern and Western, you could almost call it two separate countries!)
Hong Kong
Korea
India
Honduras
Canada
Singapore
Japan
Scotland (does this count?)

All either for work or using miles I got while on work trips. Economy sucks now, I haven't even flown domestically for a year :(

like the last guy said, i hadn't seen this one before.

I would like to travel to many of these places, but I'm small beans endeed compared to most of the guys on here.

Oh, Canada.

Today I went to Wales. I don't know if I should add Wales to my list of country. It is a bit ambiguous to me if it is considered a country or not.

his view will differ, a bit like the scotts.

The seem to prefer their damp and rainy ends of the country and still hate the brits for raping and pillaging them centuries ago.

Personally I think its to do with us taking all the pretty girls

and leaving them with the fat tattoed ginger ones:)

I had to take the time to make the list (it was fun!) ... 30 countries is not bad but so many I want

to add and time is not on my side ! :) Serving in the military helped quite a bit !
There are many repeats on the list and some I only stepped on for a layover/sleepover...

Mine is 34. It got me thinking about how many I want and I found this great club called the Century Club http://www.travelerscenturyclub.org/ . You have to have visited 100 to be accepted. I've got quite a few to go.

66 - it would be cool to get to 70 before my 30th aniv!

I think that, with the exception of Cambodia, I visited all these countries 'overland'. Meaning I entered and left these countries via a land/sea border with my own vehicle.

Wow my list of 14 measly countries seem so very small compared to many of you. I personally have visited 14 countries visited them for at least 3 weeks. Most of them I have lived in for 3 to 4 years.
Although because I signed up on this board as a family and this is an adventure that we wish to do together I guess we can actually only count 2. The United States of America.... and Texas :Wow1:.
So we aren't as well traveled as we wish we were but we are getting there:ylsmoke:

I copied your list and deleted the ones I haven't visited, made relevant notes in parentheses.

Many without notes mean that I was only there for a short time, or there as a child, or don't have anything interesting to offer as advice. East Africa (broadly defined as the TZ coast inland to Lake Albert and then northeast to the Horn of Africa) is my primary area where I could offer expertise to fellow Expo'ers. Also happy to discuss southern China. Have a fair amount of experience in the Caribbean, including being a citizen of a Caribbean country and having lived in that region, but it doesn't seem to be that relevant to this group. In East Africa, I haven't made notes next to various countries but feel free to ask questions in PM's if I can be of help - I have enough of an idea of many places in the region that I'm comfortable offering advice. And if I don't feel I know enough, or if I feel my knowledge of an area is "stale," I'll at least get back to you and tell you. Happy to help if I can.
