Tethering the 3G AND 3GS

Yes, that's right. Tether a new 3Gs! Apparantly the new phones and software has this already built in for other countries but was removed for the U.S.

EDIT: YOU MUST BE RUNNING BOTH THE LATEST ITUNES AND PHONE (3.0) SOFTWARE FOR THIS TO WORK. Apparently there are files and drivers in iTunes that's required.

I can't believe it worked and it seems to work perfectly, WITHOUT jailbraking the phone. I just got the phone the other day and have done nothing to it except this. (I found this by searching how to access the internet with an unlocked 2G phone on T-mobile). The coverage of AT&T for these phones SUCK out and about but if you have one, you love them and know what I mean.

I have no idea if there are any repercussions to this or not but it works well. DO AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! I ASSUME NOTHING!

Press on CUSTOM APN

Change the V3 Tethering + MMS to YES and the Carrier to US-AT&T (in my case. Put your country and carrier here). After you do that the rest of the lines fill in themselves

Press CREATE PROFILE

Press INSTALL

Press REPLACE. Type your lock code if you have one set up. After it's done you get the final screen that says the Profile Installed.

Go to SETTINGS, GENERAL, NETWORK.

Turn on Internet Tethering

Pick your method. I used USB since my laptop doesn't have Bluetooth.
I just plugged in via the USB and it was done. Nothing needed to be done on the computer. When you're done, just disconnect the USB tethering is terminated.

I don't know the technical details but how would they know if the data is being requested from the phone or through something else through the phone? It's still through the phone reguardelss. I'll see and I will definately post if something gets flagged but right now it's seemless and flawless.

From what I've been told (and who knows how much of that is fact), there's no explicit way for AT&T to know whether data streamed to the phone over the cellular network is from the phone itself or from a computer connected to the phone. The way they know that it's coming from a computer is by the sheer volume of data being downloaded. Supposedly (and I've never read all of the fine print of the AT&T data plans) the "unlimited" plans are not really unlimited; if you're using a massive amount of data they can actually charge you extra or even cut off your usage rights. So if you tethered your phone to a laptop and used the 3G network to download movies for a month straight, chances are you'd get busted.

Again, this is all hear-say, so take it for what it's worth. My point - if you're going to be doing some serious data consumption over the AT&T network, you better be sure of what you're doing ahead of time, because there's the possibility of some nasty overage charges for excessive data usage. Now, if all you're doing is using the phone to access a local WiFi network, none of this should matter. But in that case, why use the phone, since most if not all laptops these days come with a wireless adapter.

AT&T has to do some tweaking on their side. When it's fixed and running, all will get a text from AT&T stating it's up and working.

No way yet to MMS with a stock iPhone here in the US yet.

Just make sure you have a data plan that support the larger volume of data teathering can create.

Now don't go scaring people out. The iPhone data plan had been more than enough for me and I've been tethering for about a year now.

I could look it up but I figured I would just ask for the sake of this conversation:

1 - What is the limit to the standard $30 AT&T monthly data plan?

2 - Is the amount of data the same if you, as an example, visit ExPo from your iPhone 3Gs or your laptop computer? Or asked another way, does a computer download more information than an iPhone for the same action?

3 - How much data is downloaded to visit one page of ExPo or view one 3 minute video on YouTube?

4 - And to confirm, accessing the internet from your iPhone only uses the data plan and not your talking minutes correct?

Here's my take:

The iPhone plan is unlimited. I have heard somewhere that if you do a crap load of data (multiple GB worth) over a period of a couple of months, AT&T may call you and ask what you are using your iPhone for. I can't verify that or not

Some web sites, like Facebook, have a mobile version and a normal version. Somehow the sites seem to know what you are using. All those sites have an option to view the full site instead if you wish.

Web pages are web pages. The iPhones don't support flash yet but aside from that, downloaded pages are the same size reguardless of how you view them.

I have done everything tethered, to include updating windows, uploading movies and pics, and even streaming my HAVA live TV, all on the PC via tethering. I have yet to have a phone call or anything questioned by ATT.

Data and taking minutes are completely seperate.

There is an ATT app on the applestore that accesses your account nicely on the iPhone. On it you can see your data useage and minutes etc in a vary easy way. Just search the store for AT&T. It's a free app.

If more people are curious I can show this to my wife (she works for att) and get her take on it. She'll give me the best answer she can on if this will cause any problems on the att side of things.

My friend works for Att and he said you only come up on their radar if you go over 5gb a month in data. they will then asess the usage and apply the approprate bil for the overage. now 5gb of data is the industry standard for the so called "unlimited" data plans. Most carriers limit usage to 5gb and it is stated in your data policy. Besides the volume of data my friend said they have gurus who can check the data in the packets sent back and forth to the phone and determine if the data sent cam from a the phone or a computer. But stay under 5gb a month and you should be fine. Ive been doing tethering for about 5 months and no probs.

If you've upgraded to 3.1 or newer then this whole thread is useless to you. It was fun while it lasted.

There are still ways to tether but not simply with a new profile.
