OK....
How about we share what "Wild Thing" has blocked our forward progress!
I did this at another board.....and guys had a lot of fun with it......but now it might get REAL interesting with Africa!
Here is a shot of 100's or 1,000's...(lost count)....of sheep :chowtime: (with real live Basque sheep hearders) crossing the hwy. in McCall, Idaho summer 2004.
Of course.....then I couldn't resist sneaking one back to camp for dinner!......(second pic) not!.......hehe

From a couple of years ago in Chobe National Park, Botswana. This big bull brought our convoy to a stand still. Trust me, this picture doesn't do him justice, he was HUGE.

This little guy was cruising along in front of the Cruiser for a while, giving us plenty of time to take photos and enjoy the sight of a great desert denizen! (That's Scott getting some great photos; location, just south of our own desert dwelling, between the Sierrita Mountains and the Cerro Colorados.)

Okay, I have a lot to contribute to this thread!! So I'll be nice and break it up!
First road block by war damage in Angola:
http://www.deertracktraders.com/GImage/RoadBlock4.jpg
Then, I know Nathan already did it, but here again are those pesky road blocking nellepantalones. This time in Moremi game reserve in the Okavango in Botswana:

And then, also in Moremi in Botswana, a quite pregnant girl with a belly full of letchwe:

And I'll be back for another round soon! ;)

One more elephant shot! They are, after all, pretty much the ultimate living road blocks. At this point the passengers in the vehicle were starting to go, "Uh, Jonathan? Should we, like, move or something?"

The definition and clarity of all the parts don't match up very well.
For such detail on the cats the road, truck and background look very blurry.
In fact the clarity of the truck and the back ground look like different pictures.
It's cool though! They even have the truck leaning over a bit from impact!

This weekend (January 21), believe it or not, is Cowgirl Appreciation (http://www.geocities.com/cksaloon/index.html) at the Crown King Saloon. Wear your hat and get special drink prices. I have a buddy who just bought a Jeep, and he's begging me to take him to Crown King tomorrow. Most road blockage like this will be in town, probably. :)

Damn, that would be fun. I have not been to Crown King since last spring, I love that little town. I once played in thier anual golf tournanment, one hole, par 72. It started at the top of the hill and you had to hack your way down into the cup behind the Saloon, it was a hoot! But again, I think that was about 10 years ago. I would love to partake in Cowgirl Appreciation but it will not work for me this weekend.:(

I had to search my photo albums to find this fellow, then scan it and try to get it onto this thread. Hope it works.
We were on a day trip from Pta Bufeo, Baja California Norte, when we spotted this guy. We had stopped at the old oasis and were nosing about when this ram began to head-butt the rock just to the right of him in the pic. He seemed to object to our intruding on his watering hole.
We watched him for a minute and then drove to a spot about ½-mile away where we could still see him with binoculars. None of us had a decent telephoto lens, so this rendition is of poor quality, nonetheless, a Desert Big Horn Sheep.

Can anyone (Flywgn? Ursidae69? Jonathan Hanson?) tell me what the heck this Peacock was doing along the Salmon River, near Shoup, Idaho? Miles and miles from any ranch or house?
For Allen - Nice shot of a desert Ram. I had no idea!
RE Big Horn Sheep - the younger Ram on the road was also spotted in Idaho, on the Salmon River. The larger Ram was spotted near Glacier NP, although not technically on the road.

Ha Ha. I remember times like that!
I hate it when that happens. 3 weeks ago, I could have driven up Arrastra Gulch and saved a mile of walking each way, to the point two switchbacks below the Mayflower Mine - the county road was so side and flat and free of rocks. But right at the beginning of that leg, there was a water section 3 feet long by 1 foot deep that was completely impassible for my little car. Youse guys with your real 4x4s would have driven right through it and said "ditch? what ditch?" It was a really nice walk, though, through the pines & aspens.

Venezuela- road blocks were quite common in rural areas when electric or water lines were'nt repaired for weeks, the locals would simply block the roads and hold up traffic untill some one paid attention

Cindy's driving the truck, I'm in the passenger seat with the 400mm on the 30D body. We're driving through Yellowstone in the pouring rain (Which is why the photo is so grainy, it's dark and raining pretty hard in the photo) and we see this coyote running towards the road.
I yell for Cindy to pull over as I jump out of the truck with the big lens in my hand. I dont have time to put in on the monopod so I crouch down leaning against the truck to stablize myself and start tracking the running coyote.
Just as I get everything in focus, I start firing off frames and this was the one I like the best.

This is a good thread that Mark started. I was wondering where he was and looked at his profile and saw that he is now banned?? I can think of a lot of other people that should be banned besides him. Especialy guys who illegally climb old growth redwoods and sequoias. That guy caused so much trouble and was never ever banned. Makes no sense whatsoever to me but what do I know.... maybe ScenicWonderRunner is some sort of serial murderer or something :sombrero:
Now that you mention it - surly the 'Banned' thing is a joke? Although I haven't seen any new post from him this week. Mark has some of the most interesting and fun threads on ExPo - seems like all of them go on for pages with nothing but good spirited posts. Always imaginative. I do worry about the '.' key on his keyboard wearing out, however... :) If Mark (SWR) did offend someone, only one of two things could be true - he went completely off the reservation or the offended party is a weak panty waste with banning powers. I can't imagine Mark saying something that offensive unless there was an axe to grind already.
BUT - in the spirit of this thread - I offer the high digital zoom on Mr. Fox. He seemed to be basking in the light of the rising sun:

Schattenjager, thanks for the compliments and that Fox is just hilarious! It does look like it's sunning itself and just enjoying the morning despite being in the middle of the road
Hopefully SWR's Banned title is just a joke. I agree, he had some great threads and always had good comments

This is another shot that my wife took (Seems she always gets the great action shots!)
We were driving through Yellowstone when a herd of Buffalo started moving across the road. One scraggler was still off in the field when it looked up and realized the rest of the herd had left it by itself.
The traffic had started moving as we watched this guy race towards the road.
Cindy yelled for me to stop as she opened her door, stood on the side step of the truck and snapped this shot.

Of all her photos, it probably is one of my favorites because it would be impossible to recapture again. Well the chances would be slim. So even though there is no road in this shot, this guy had us stopped:Wow1:

What settings did you use for this photo? I'm sure your equipment is much better then mine, but I'm haveing a really hard time getting good shots with my Nikon 300mm in anything other then perfect conditions with something to set the camera on (I think because of movement, though I'm a sharpshooter and can hold pretty steady for that...) so I'm really curious how you got it so clear with a 400mm.
Thanks!

Two things, good equipment and I'm lucky
If you've never seen the Canon 400 f/2.8, its a monster and the lens you'll see on the sidelines of most sports arenas. There is a reason for that. The front element, or front glass is about the size of a bowling ball. It will take in a ton of light and allow you to get some amazing shots.
I bumped my ISO up on this shot to 400, and opened the aperature all the way to f/2.8. This allowed me to keep my shutter up at 1/4000th of a second which caught the dirt being kicked up
Just...wow. That is amazing.

This is one of those lenses my 1st photography teacher described as "all glass". It makes sense when you see one up close (or hold one), big aperture lenses are so much fun, but HEAVY.

Not to get too far off topic, but they arent fun to hand hold. I can only snap off a few shots before my arms start to shake. The lens by itself is a hefty 11.8 lbs

Got a crazy scare one day while out shooting on the coast.
Coastguard chopper was buzzing the coastline pretty low as the wife and I were waiting for an Eagle to come back to its nest.
I picked the lens up like I have it in the photo above to see the helicopter better and as I did it, it slowed down considerable and everyone aboard looked at us
I know the Coast Guards dont have weapons onboard like the gunships do, but it still made me drop the lens pretty fast as I realized what they were thinking...Yes, I can be dumb like that sometimes

No pics on this computer, but I have lots of stories!
Sheep in New Zealand stopped us for about 20 minutes. A LOT of sheep walked past our rental during that 20 minutes!!!
Also in NZ we had a mudslide not quite block the road, but hit the side of the rental and almost push us into the ocean! :Wow1::Wow1:
In Jasper it's a regular occurrence to get stopped by the bighorns, and in town there's usually deer or elk wandering around.
My first trail (not road) blockage that I can remember was when I was mountain biking in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario. I think I was around 18 or so.
I was heading down the back side of a the trail, had a big head of steam and came over a ridge (getting a bit of air) and I see this HUGE moose cow straddling across the tight single track I was headed down.
My eyes went about 10x the size of this guy --> :Wow1:
I slammed on my brakes and luckily the day was a muddy one, and as I gripped the lever the brakes squealed very loudly. The cow was not looking at me, but still bolted off the path after hearing the noise.
I was pretty lucky because I ended up sliding about 8 feet past where the moose was standing.
And if you've ever seen the size of a moose, you know a normal mtn bike would probably go right under it's belly, and I would have taken the impact on my head/shoulders.
That is still the closest I've ever been to a moose, and I'm fine with standing back 100 yds or so. ;)

Great shots of the rattler, Fangars! And unusual. I've been running around the desert for 40+ years now and have come across a great number of rattlers. The ones I see are NEVER stretched out in a straight line like that - they were always in an S-curve, always ready to strike if needed. You must have caught this guy kicking back, sunning and relaxing! As far as the tortoise, they seem to be very tolerant of activity around them as long as it doesn't get up close and personal to them. Years ago I was photographing an off-road race just outside of Vegas and came across a tortoise calmly chomping away on some plant while 30 feet away those extremely loud race rigs were flying by at 80 mph.
Pat, that is a gopher snake (most call them bull snakes around here) and they are completely harmless but they do grow to nearly 6 feet long. They are prolific hunters of rodents; I've plenty living around my place and I leave them be. Even my daughter at a very young age learned to put on some gloves, pick one up if it came into the yard, and take it back out into the desert. They also eat birds and bird eggs - here is a shot of one I found in my barn, in a bird's nest it had just cleaned out. This was at the top of a 13 foot post - how he got up there I surely don't know!

I was good, my whole body tightened up pretty quick when I saw it standing there, not even a molecule of air could have escaped my body at that point! lol
I remember coming to a stop and getting off my bike to look where it tramped off to. I looked on the trail and saw it's hoof prints almost 2 bike lengths back! I think hitting a moose while I was on my bike would have felt like hitting a brick wall!

plenty of alligators too, where the road flooded over. lots of hatchlings and one 7ft female.
the back of the alligator is dead center of the picture on the right side of the "road"

Great pics as usual Pat.
For those that don't know, that's someones pet they turned loose at some point. It's an African Spur Thigh Tortoise, obviously not native to Utah. They're either the 2nd or 3rd largest in the world, and it's probably pretty rare to see one in the "wild" like that. Who knows what it's doing to the vegetation; I'd LOVE to see it's burrow too! We actually have a pair here at the house for the kids. Hard to imagine they'll get that big :Wow1: and what we'll do with them once they do. I'll have to post a pic later, but they were both the same size a year ago, and one is now triple the other. They can grow fast.
thanks for sharing.
Speaking of Tortoises, we met this guy while a group of us were riding the Dual Sport Utah 500 (http://everymilesamemory.smugmug.com/Sports/Dual-Sport-Utah-500-2009/10039271_6695V#687809319_hDF7x) through Canyonlands National Park

Great thread, and great pics!
I've been stopped by bears, moose, deer, sheep, etc.
But the worst, that was a box tortoise in the Mohave.
Ft. Irwin has trails everywhere, but a few are very narrow, becuase of the box tortoise.
We had one hold up our convoy for more than 12 hours:Wow1:
We weren't allowed to move it, or even approach it. Had to stay over 100 feet from it.:snorkel:
We were towards the back, and since we couldn't move it, go around it, or turn around (becuase of the trail restraint in that area) we just pulled out the stove, and made coffee, then took a nap:coffeedrink:

Is it my monitor or does this guy have greenish tinge to it? If so it may have been the rude Mojave rattler. Good to stay away from those nasty boys.:Wow1: Cool catch.

A group of Land Rovers were up at Tellico back in 2006 and we went up this dead end Forest Service road to the top of a mountain. On the way back out we came around a corner to fnd this tree had fallen over, completely blocking the trail. When asked if anyone had a chain saw Denny said "yeah , I've got one .... back in my tent about six miles from here".
http://solaros1.smugmug.com/Land-Rover-Events/Tellico-April-2006/IMG3160/979551583_t4wJf-L.jpg (http://solaros1.smugmug.com/Land-Rover-Events/Tellico-April-2006/13455225_HUAVj#979551583_t4wJf-A-LB)
So we had to do this...
http://solaros1.smugmug.com/Land-Rover-Events/Tellico-April-2006/IMG3163/979551700_tmc3c-L.jpg (http://solaros1.smugmug.com/Land-Rover-Events/Tellico-April-2006/13455225_HUAVj#979551700_tmc3c-A-LB)
And shortly before that happened we had to deal with this...

I almost ran over this guy yesterday crossing the road out in the West Desert of Utah. I thought it was a lizard at first but realized it was moving much too slow for a lizard and it just didn't look...right.
I yelled at the guy behind me that I thought there was a big spider crossing the road and I was right. I turned around and we all had some fun shooting photos as he lumbered along looking for a mate.

Hi they are Processionary Caterpillar or in Latin Ochrogaster lunifer.
They are the caterpillars og the Bag-shelter Moth.
When you in the bush and they get in down your shirt or anywhere you can come out with a rash.
