View Full Version : oh, what a feeling .... Toyota

a long and arduous search came to an end today ...
A one owner, 2001 Toyota 4Runner replaced the trusty, napoleanic (you know, small in stature but mighty) Suzuki. The runner is, gasp, gold. I know it is not an official expo color (although I know a Trooper owned by SB that is goldish, so it isn't without precedent). Mileage is 68,700 and the truck is super clean. And best of all: $13,995. Most I've seen in that price range have over 120K, and most I've seen with this mileage and vintage here in Tucson are 19K.
So, out with the old and in with the new - here it is:

Thanks all, I'll be asking many questions in the coming days. Unlike with the Suzuki, there are many choices of items for the suspension, etc ..
where do I begin?
oh, and it is a v6 with auto.
(This is actually my second 4Runner - first one was an 87 with the 22R engine. The transmission was dying (previous owners had never changed the transmission fluid, and I never thought to check. When I did, it was black, not pink.)

A fridge, because I heard "You can travel anywhere in Baja with a stock Toyota and a fridge" :sombrero:

Jeff you remembered to buy the 4WD version, right? :D
I'm just happy that you now will have to actually have some competition on the timed course at ExPo.

It does have 4 wheels, and one stickshift thingy ... oh, ****. It's supposed to have two of those stick shift things, right? I actually checked that, this time. Thanks for checking up on me.
As far as the timed course, we'll see if it was just driver error ...

It have the electric locker? $800 from the dealer set up ready to go with your choice of gear from 4.10, 4.30 and 4.56! You will need to modify the housing if it didn't come with the locker but you sure can't do a ARB for the price.
Retrofit electrical to actuate it.

They also sell the leocker but you can usually hagle with the dealer and get it around $800. Check at http://www.tacomaterritory.com/ for how to get a discount at the dealer on the locker.
Welcome back to the Toyota world!

Probably an auction once the dealership realizes what they have. The salesman gave it 8 out of 10 for appearance - nobody ever looked under it to see the gouges on the frame. It's a great little vehicle, but I had run it hard.

Thanks and sorry for the kidnap, as for the Lexus I will keep untill toyoya comes up with the new design or body style on the Landcruiser. I would consider the Land Rover LR3, however they have too many issues.

Congrats Jeff...and with 68,000 miles! That's fricken great!
Now that I have looked at your avitar, I have seen your old Suzuki running around town in the past.
If you need a great Toyota mechanic, I have been using Dan's ToyShop over on First and Ft Lowell. He has been very honest and knowledgeable. Good prices too.
I have been going there for 14 years, it was Bill's then Rey's. Still a great shop even with all of the owner changes.

here are some pics from today. Compared to the Zuk, this thing is huge.
Differences: It is so smooth on washboard. Quiet and so much more comforatable. And for a stock vehicle, pretty flexy. But of course, I want more ...:hehe:
The Zuk was certainly much more nimble, and with the locker I could just point it and go. I know once I get used to the 4Runner, I'll be much more comfortable with it's size.
Anyway, here are some pics:

I was driving down Speedway today when a crazy man in a gold 4Runner came shooting up beside me blowing his horn! It looks immaculate, Jeff; what a great find.

I vote for a little armor #1...I like the protection as well as jacking points.
Check out Richard's sliders:
http://www.stubbswelding.com/rocksliders.htm
I've purchased two sets of sliders from Richard - absolutely great service and a super clean product.
For a rig with lots of sheet metal and glass, I chose the SKO style - I have the kickout on the beater truck and they do help prevent rear quarter panel damage (back when there WAS a bed and camper shell). Also have a set burned on to the Taco - the kickout really helps on a truck with some wheel base...
