ATV / Snowmobile Enthusiasts... An Engine Question

(Wasn't sure where to post this. Mods please move if I have erred...)

Does anyone here know of any reasonably priced sources to buy used ATV / Snowmobile engines?
Colorado area would be nice, but reliable sources anywhere appreciated.

A friend of mine is looking for a replacement engine for a 2006 Polaris Sportsman 800EFI ATV.

He doesn't have the original (toasted) engine, so rebuilding is not an option.

Are the engines generally interchangeable between Polaris ATV's and Polaris snowmobiles?

Not local but you could try crashedtoys.com. They sell wrecked atv/snowmobiles you might be able to ship. Contact your local insurance company and see who buys the wrecked ones from them.

He had to try pretty hard to ruin a Polaris motor. Yikes! Since it is a newer model, he might want to look at a crate motor w/ warranty.

FYI - The snowmobile motors are usually different. I don't believe they even made an 800 that was of the 4-stroke ATV version. In some cases that Snowmobile / ATV/ Watercraft engines are similar, but I believe they are the newer genesis style and even then there are differences.

Yeah, I kind of figured that might be the case.

My friend bought the ATV on the cheap from the P.O. who drained the oil, but neglected to re-fill it before taking it out for a spin... (turned out to be a short spin, needless to say...)
