Wondering if this rack would be worth the investment? http://www.quadratec.com/products/12036_100X_07_PG.htm,

Seems like a bad idea to put that much stress on the lugs on the hatch.

Thats a good point, Think I'll stick with just my plan to build a defender rack for my KJ.:smiley_drive:

There are also hitch mounted racks

The only thing I worry about with those if you go up a steep hill you are going to drag.

I think they make that style of rack on an extension that lifts it up , but I wouldn't trust to muchweight on it either.
Maybe modify one of those Jeep racks that attaches to the body ??

Yah, something like that in that picture location wouldn't be able to carry more than a pillow. LOL.
However, you could look at putting it between the wheelwells inside without the back seat. You could look to adapt it to a swing tire carrier. You could look at mounting it to a hitch frame with a hitch extension. You could look at putting it on the tongue of a trailer. You could also look at adapting it to the top of a Jeep as well.
Each location will require deeper review of its carry capacity as well as the mounting to carry what you want. I have a friend that has a tossed out ConFerr rack that he's modding to put in the back of his Scrambler behind the rear seat above the Jeeps side panels. He's adding structure since it didn't come with a base.

I forget that the KJ's have a hatch like the XJ's.
Hmm..

ya to get that it says you need their tire carrier
Weight capacity on Jeep tailgate is 50 pounds, weight capacity when installed on a quality tire carrier like the 700 Olympic Tire Swing is 250 pounds on the highway and 125 pounds on the trail.
I still wouldn't trust it.

Doesn't the XJ rear lift up. The 04 Kj the glass lifts up and the door swings to the side.

Oh..ok.. so if you used a rack like I posted, you could still open the door, but not the glass.

Yeah, I read that. I still think that 250# seem like too much...

I have that exact rack for the KJ. I have never put much in it just because I have been worried about the weight on the door and I have only used it 5 or 6 times. I think with the door closed there should not be to many issues with more weight (probably not 250#s though.) The last time I used it, I used the Thule tire bike rack on the tire and set the rack on top, half on the rack half on the tire and did not have issues with probably about 100 pounds (was being lazy and did not want to exchange the pieces that fit under the tire) I actually found that setup to be the most useful as I felt the weight was better supported but that was just my feeling nothing really to base that on. Hope that helps.

The rack shown with the gas cans are the Warrior Adventure racks. They are only made for Wranglers (unfortunately)

I have the rack the OP listed. Like the others have stated on the the stock LJ tailgate you really cant put much weight. With a 120qt cooler and a few bags of ice in it the whole thing moved ALOT. As a temporary solution I supported the spare on a block of wood. This alleviated most of the flexing. Future mods included a heavy duty tire swing, which is what this rack is really intended for.
