This is one of our Garmin competitors (REI) but this price is certainly worth jumping on.

The Nuvi 500 is a great unit since it's not only a road navigator, but it's also pre-loaded with topos.

As a Garmin dealer, we buy these for $254. $224 is pretty sweet.

I saw that flyer in the mail, what a great deal. I purchased the 500 about a month ago and have been very happy with it thus far.

Online it is still showing $299, the $224 price is what is in the flyer that came in the mail. I got the flyer yesterday here in Georgia.

It's for their sale starting October 9th. It should be on the website on the 9th. Or you can call, they usually will honor their sale items a few days ahead.

Been using a 500 for close to a year now. Quite pleased with it. It has replaced my DeLorme in the rig. Only drawback is that it does not have a robust tracks feature and can really only effectively load waypoints.

What is does well:
Gets me to the trailhead on streets and roads
Finds gas and food on the freeway
Geocaches for the kids
Takes the state specific 24k topo microsd cards (no more loading maps!)

What is does not do well:
No tracks
Not very good on foot (no good way to carry it)

this is a marine 1m waterproof unit right? Also does it take MGRS coordinates?

Personally, i'd rather spend a few dollars more supporting a retailer who is open minded to equal access to our backcountry.

Cabela's comes to mind.

Looks like the sale is on now. I was just wondering for those that know, can the unit show the long/latt right on the screen of your "Favorite" spots? I tried to get that on my old Nuvi 200 and I could not. I had to be literally right at that spot and it would show it, but I couldn't just pull up the particular spot and get the coordinates.

I do need to pick one up (more for the wife), so this would be great.

Also, Costco has a 285W for $199

Cabela's comes to mind.I understand that. Vote with your dollars. That said, any outdoor retailer does a greater good by getting people out in the sticks in the first place. The more people that get exposed to the wilderness the more people we'll have with an interest in protecting those places. I wish Cabela's was a little less about killing stuff.

Good hunters do as much harm to the wild life in general, as good 4x4ers do for the back country.

My bad. To smoothly switch directions, I saw that REI also had 20% off on any full-priced items. Their Garmin 60CSx is priced at $350, which means $270 with the coupon. Pretty good price, I think.

That is a really good price for the 60CSx. Although don't most of the big discounts from REI specifically exclude GPS's, among other things???

Well, I guess that means I'll be picking up the 500 tomorrow.

I just picked up one of these for the FJ62. Now my 60CSx will be living permanently in the Tacoma! No more switching back and forth.

I like the Nuvi 500 so far.

Can you elaborate on this?

I picked one up, too. Like it so far.

What he's referring to is the quality of the topo maps resident in the Nuvi isn't that high. To get something like 1:24,000 USGS maps you need added memory cards.

Here's one at REI for Cali/Nevada: http://www.rei.com/product/777794

Thinking about picking one up to see if they're worth it for the rest of the SW USA. There are also some after-market ones made for Baja (one focusing on roads, the other on topo). I can't vouch for any, though, since I haven't purchased any yet.
