Thanks, Rob, for spotting this cool van!

http://www.seikel.de/de/images/4x4/extreme/test_morocco_0067_ss.jpg

The VW T5 with portal axles was constructed by Seikel,
a German tuner that has increased 4x4 performance of
several VW vehicles. The portal axles increase ground
clearance to 15 inches without increasing the size of the
tires (235/85R16).

This fifth version of the VW Transporter (hence the T5 name)
was introduced in 2003. Mechanically the T5 is very similar
to the original Mercedes Sprinter. Now all we have to do is
convince Seikel to offer axles for the Mercedes diesel version
of the T5 van, which is sold in USA.

Here's a link to Seikel's page about this vehicle:

They produce their own portals.
Also their bilsteins, springs, skidplates, and gears for the gearbox are produced exlusivly.

There is a company in either Austria or Germany that does conversions for diesel sprinter's to 4x4 (many with manual transmissions also)

Since 2006 even in South Africa

Nice van, are you guys aware of the fact the you can replace vw van parts (http://www.vw-auto-parts-wholesale.com/vw-van-parts.html) specifically the engine with Porsche engine? Is this true?

It can be done depending on the which engine you are wanting to drop into which vehicle. Of course if you've got the money and the skills you can do anything. Which VW are you asking about specifically? While you can drop a Porsche air cooled into an air cooled Type 2, it's not worth it. You'll pay a fortune for "Porsche" parts. Better to get one of Jake Raby's engine kits and build what you need. For water cooled, there are several conversions that work as well (ex. Zetec) for a lot less money. One thing you need to remember is the Porsche engine is designed for a lightweight high revving sportscar- the buses/vans are heavy and require more low end. You'll also have to replace the tranny as they aren't designed for high horsepower applications. Even the Vanagon was less than 100hp.

Here's a link to get you started http://www.syncro.org/engines.html I'd also check out thesamba.com. There's a couple of other VW sites that are more model specific also.

I visited Auto Seikel in Germany this January and their product is amazing. Peter Seikel (the owner) showed me the T5 portals, among other things. Great attention to the detail in all their stuff. They even have VW manufacture low rane gears for them.

I will be using their Amarok accesories in my project.

Here is a video that shows the conversion, and some running around on and off road with the Extreme set up. I think it is about 20,000 Euro for the conversion when I looked at it a few years back http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5ln_uZ5HFk
