View Full Version : The watch (timepiece) thread

I just picked up a new watch that I am really enjoying so I thought I would start a watch thread. I have used the venerable Casio digital calculator watch for what I would estimate to be about 15 years now. I am often doing math and am not so fast at doing it in my head like Vince or Uwe :p I am on my 2nd one (lost the first). They are very handy, and water resistant (WR), but one gripe I always had was that they didn't have a light on them.

Casio has a newer version (http://www.casio.com/products/Timepiece/Databank/DBC32/product/DBC32-1A/) out now with a few more features.

Illuminated - with an option to automatically illuminate when you raise the watch and tilt it to look at it (this will come in handy for the arctic trip when I have gloves on and it will be dark a lot).
Calculator with currency conversion
Dual times
Alarm/chrono
Stopwatch
Database - stores up to 25 names/numbersAnd a very nice price of $24US.

Now, at the other end of the spectrum, I'd love to have one of these (http://www.koboldwatch.com/products/ps.htm) for the upcoming arctic trip.

So go ahead and post up what kind of trusty watch (or watches) that you have. Or maybe your dream watch.

And the Rolex Explorer has been one that I would love to get. Either the I or II

I used to break Timexes all the time, thought instead I'd get a Tag Heur, broke that too. Anything I have on my wrists in terms of watches stop working. The only clock that's ever accurate for me?

I wear a 37-yr old Rolex Explorer I that my dad bought on his honeymoon and gave me on my 18th birthday. I never take it off, but did have it semi-refurbished (mechanism cleaned, lens replaced, couple of chain links replaced) about 5 years ago. Love my watch and plan to give it to my son on HIS 18th birthday.

But my "daily driver" watch that I wear here to work is a Seiko Chronograph...

I have a Bulova, fairly close to the one pictured, but lately it has taken to going through batteries fairly quickly. It is currently dead. The plastic insert with the numbers for the diving timer also fell/broke off a few years back. Most days, my most reliable time piece doubles as a communications device. If I get another one, I would probably look at Swiss Army or Tag Heuer. Though the Bulova worked well for me until it started eating batteries.

That's what I go with, a simple Timex with an analog face and a Silverfoot band. I tend to lose or break them and so expensive watches are a waste. I smashed one climbing, dropped one crawling out of the 'Nest and ran over it, left one sitting on a table in Kodachrome Basin.

All right, lets talk about watches. Watches are a mans diamonds, I will happily buy jeans at Costco and wear them to somebody's wedding, but watches are the one clothing item that actually interest me. Given a larger budget, I would have many more, but getting them to fit can be an issue, for my size (6', around 200lbs) I have relatively skinny wrists, so I feel like Run DMZ (that dates me pretty well) when I wear those big Suuntos, as much as I love them.

My daily driver is this freestyle, been wearing it for about 18 months. Keeps good time, never scratches, comfortable.

Fancy dress up/important meeting watch is an older version of the white face Rip Curl in the picture below. It tells the tides, which does me a whole lot of good smack dab in the middle of Colorado. When I am at the ocean I have no idea how to use the tide part, but it was gift and I like how it looks.

Expedition watch is an older Nike with the altitude / tem / barometer functions. I don't usually like digital, and the altitude is based on atmospheric pressure, so a change in the weather can move you up or down quite dramatically. I have found that if I set the altitude to a know level at the start of a trail, it will stay fairly accurate for the next few hours.

Then there's a whole drawer full of cheaper Timex / Dakota / anything else watches that I pick up from time to time.

And then theres the gold Bulova pocket watch, that my grandfather gave to my dad, who gave it to me, and I will eventually pass it on to one of my daughters. It sits in a box not being used, but I wind it up every once in awhile, seems to keep great time.

Fun thread, lets see some more.

I picked up a Luminox "Navy Seal" off Ebay for around $130 (list price, around $230). Tritium indicators (also used by Rolex) are amazingly bright.

http://www.creativewatch.co.uk/luminox/luminox-navy-seals-dive-watch-lu3901-190x400.jpg

Then last week it stopped. Replaced the battery, still no go. Warranty no good because I bought it from a non-certified shop.

So I'll probably go back to my Russian Submarine Commander watch.

http://www.eurostyleinusa.com/images2/154_5453.jpg

$50 or so on Ebay.

Yes, I'm a poser. I'm not trying to pass myself off as one of these folx, I just think the watches are cool. Though if some stranger thinks I escaped from a Russian sub, so much the better.

I have a 20-year-old Citizen pilot watch - but it was hard to read.

My Dad and I just got back from China, he picked up (from a street vendor) a dozen fake Rolexes for $20. Varying degrees from "looks okay, don't look too close" to "the whole mechanism shakes when you move it". I was looking for good quality fake Lumnix or Tag Heuer, but didn't see any - all the vendors are into the Rolex.

By the way, I had an old gold Waltham pocket watch, with a heavy gold chain, that belonged to my great-grandfather, something like the one below. It was stolen last month when someone broke into my house. I'm sure it's of no value whatsoever to them, and probably not worth much if they can pawn it.

Heres a real problem, Im trying to find a place that sells good quality bands. I seem to go thru those the most. I have a great watch, but always seems to be in my pocket because the band is broke. I want one that has a GOOD, ok decent compass and something that will last more than 6 months.

I am not one of those guys that can get away with wearing a nice watch for very long. I tend to lose my head and do things that are harmful to their lifespan.
When working shifts I have a Timex "Expedition Camper" Indiglo (http://www.timex.com/gp/product/B0000TIIUK/ref=sr_11_1/104-2920536-0988726?ie=UTF8&timexBrand=core). Easy to read, has a seconds hand and I could throw it away if contaminated without feeling bad.

At the fulltime job, The shock of working with hammers , solvents , welding splatter and the accompanying electrical fields do not work well for some watches.
I have had the "Plain Jane" Casio G-shock (http://www.casio.com/products/Timepiece/G-Shock/) for years. It has been through a dozen cheap bands over the years. I still have it in a drawer since my wife picked up a G-Shock with thermometer. I wear that one at work now. It really is just as durable.
Around the same time I picked up one of the Casio Triple sensor watches. Altimeter, Barometer, Thermometer. It also has a digital compass. This was a great watch until the batteries died. I was unable to get it working again. During that time I bought a Casio Pathfinder (http://www.casio.com/products/Timepiece/Pathfinder/PAG40/). This was the new version and has a larger easier to read face, as well as a nice big button for the back light. Easy to hit with a gloved hand.
After a few years the battery went bad on the Pathfinder. I installed new batteries to find it not working. It turns out there is a reset procedure requiring the battery to be shorted to a contact. BINGO! It works, and the older triple sensor was able to be reset as well.

The Casio Pathfinder (http://www.casio.com/products/Timepiece/Pathfinder/)has been a great watch. I used it extensively while dragracing to keep an eye on the adjusted altitude. While hiking it graphs temperature and altitude changes. Some times I don't realize just how over exerted I am getting, checking the temperature from time to time has been a good way to judge, and a reminder to hydrate.
I have actually had to use the compass a couple times. Caught out without another means and turned around, it really did come in handy to get reoriented.

If you are not into "bling" and don't mind a big watch, I would recommend this one. There are plenty of new versions of the Pathfinder (http://www.casio.com/products/Timepiece/Pathfinder/) out there now. I am afraid to even look as I might NEED a new one.

Great responses to this thread!

During that time I bought a Casio Pathfinder (http://www.casio.com/products/Timepiece/Pathfinder/PAG40/).

I also had one of these for quite a few years, but I usually only wore it on trips. A few too many dunks in hot springs is what I guess finally did it in. I took it to a local repair shop, but despite a new gasket it never did work right again. It was a great watch when I did use it - very handy with the barometer and altimeter. I didn't use the compass all that much.

I have to admit that I have been following the thread with some degree of amusement. My biggest requirements for a travel watch is it needs to be good enough to take abuse, but not so good that I am upset when it receives copious amounts of said abuse, and should double as a sailing watch. So a Timex Ironman with a velcro band (The Band, Gecko, etc.) has been my answer for the past 15 years or so. I have had several of them and I doubt I will buy another. They are difficult to use quickly and they have a problem that when you change the battery, it won't beep anymore, which is a big problem for me. And at $50+ that is just bogus. At some point I will probably by a nice Ronstan timer watch for sailing and maybe a Suunto or Brunton watch with some doodads for travel.

Daily driver is a Bulova that my grandparents bought for my 21st birthday.

Woah - those are some fancy watches. Out of interest David hempleman Adams the first guy to do the explorers grand slam wore a casio on all his trips which included the 7 summits and both poles (geo and magnetic) :D

Myself I had one of those swiss army watches - built like a tank and took tons of abuse - don't have it now because some kind hearted sould relieved me of it while I was in whitehorse :(

Now I have a timex

A Rolex Sub for me. I have worn it just about everyday for the last 17 years. The only time I haven't worn it was when it was shipped to Rolex for cleaning. This is saying a lot, considering the last 13 years of it's life it's been rough duty. Not one single problem with it. I just see at as one more piece of essential equipment.

It's funny how attracted my young son was to it at such an early age. Now that he is seven and he is able to discuss it, he is sure it's going to be his one day...He's right. I'll be screwed if I ever have another kid :yikes:

For other stuff, the Citizen Corso. Titanium and Eco-Drive. The shiny Titanium scratches somewhat easily, so it's usually reserved for more formal situations.

Bought it when I was working in Skagway Alaska picked it out from under the counter of the Mountain Shop. It was not until years latter that I came across the name of the watch, "North Wind"
Thought it was a bit poetic since the name "Skagway" directly translates as "Land Of The North Wind"

I've never liked having a watch on my wrist. They always irritate me in a low grade sort of way. Roughly like how those anti Sea Sickness wrist bands work.

Perhaps it's odd and perhaps not, but of those I know who care what time it is I am consistently closer in my guesses than those who guess and then look at their watch.
I do find that about once a day I need to look at a clock to 'adjust' my internal clock. I find myself using either the GPS or the cell phone to do this.

Around Christmas of 2001 I bought a Chase Durer BlackHawk Mach 3.
Very good watch, and it has not let me down, and it has been bumped/scraped into all sorts of things at work, and it shows no wear/tear at at..
http://www.chase-durer.com/watches/bhawk_sb_main.html
Mine is the same color combo as in the picture below.
http://www.luminoxshop.com/luminox-3067-evo-navy-seal-dive-watch-colormark.html

http://www.chase-durer.com/images/features_im/bhawksb_de.jpg

However I started looking for a new watch to wear for kicking around the home and on weekends, and I was going to use the Mach 3 for work only.
I liked the gas lights that Luminox uses in their watches, as they need no exposure to sunlight or interior lights to shine, they work on their own for ten plus years or more.

They came out with a new one called the Luminox EVO Navy Seal Mens dive watch COLORMARK Series.
http://www.luminoxshop.com/luevonasecos.html

I ended up getting the green one.

I can not take this thing off except to shower and sleep.
It has become my favorite watch ever, and it is so simple.
No extra gadgets on it, and it is analog.
I do not really care for all the digital stuff on watches these days.
The only thing it has extra is the calendar.

And it is very tough too, I knock it into stuff at work all the time and there is no visible evidence of wear at all.

Here is a little info on the gas light technology.
http://luminox.800rpm.com/index.php?/site/technology

Total darkness at night in my bedroom I can see the hands/numbers very brightly across the room on my dresser.

I like the watch so well I am thinking of picking up the orange one too, and a few for my sons.
The oldest is in the Army, he might enjoy this watch.

I'll express a minority view.

I appreciate the craftsmanship of the mechanical watches. I have a couple of Rolexes and an old Hamilton in my sock drawer. I just don't wear them.

I haven't worn a watch since college. Most of the day, I don't need to know the exact time. I'm not navigating with a sextant, or tracking splits from the rail at Churchill Downs! When I do need to know the time, I'm surrounded by devices with clocks: computers, cell phones, GPS receivers, and so on.

When I have to keep a scheduled appointments like a plane flight, my $15 Casio works fine.

I dislike the fashion statement watches. Why not just make a bracelet of Krugerrands?

I have two watches, a Heuer Monaco that my grandfather bought in the 60s that I used to wear all the time, then was told exactly how much the thing was worth when I went to service it. It now comes out on special occasions.

I replaced that with an Oris BC3 Day Date on a nylon band. Leather rots and I don't like rubber or metal bands.

I have to agree with you and am in a line of work where you might need one, firefighter paramedic. I stopped wearing a watch about 15 years ago at work, it just got in the way and broke too many. Taking a pulse is really a matter of knowing if a rate is too fast or too slow and that is easy just to feel or hear or hook up to the monitor. Like you said there are things that tell time all over the place, even on a patients arm:ylsmoke:

I have been wearing a Suunto Core for a year now. I wore a Suunto Vector before that, and I can honestly say they are the best watches I have ever owned. They are accurate and hold up to the abuse that comes with mountaineering and rock climbing. Not to mention the occasional crash on the mountain bike. http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj231/watchesetc/suunto_core.jpg

I own the Omega Sea Master Dive Watch. But it's less then a good watch.. already had to return it for repairs three times..

I have been using Traser Watches for about 8 years now. Great watches and with a lot of history. I have been wearing the Traser Black Storm Pro for a couple of years, and you couldn't ask for a better watch. Not a give away at 450.-- bucks but none the less worth every cent. I dive, hike camp etc with it.. and it looks good enough to wear for a night out of the town.

I spent a lot of time comparing the Suunto and the Highgear and based on actual user reviews went with the slightly less expensive unit. No regrets in 4 years.

When that's too big to fit under a shirt cuff, I strap on my Citizen's Eco-Drive.

I have the most reliable time piece known to man....water proof guaranteed, never breaks, guaranteed and when it does, you don't need it any longer, accurate to within 15 minutes (how much more accuracy do you really need), costs nothing and is infinitely versatile and calibratable (is that a word?).

It's me, my stomach tells me when I am hungry, when I am sleepy I sleep, a use the sun to stay within 15 minutes even through clouds one can see brighter areas.

Always in fashion, no one wants to rob you for it. Goes with everything. Never forget it. Pretty much zero maintenance.

Only thing it is very poor on and that is dates...I forget which day of the week it is and what is the dates. Gotta get that fixed!

Titanium with date for me. I need the second hand and I like the weight and the style. I do need to pop the band off and run it thru my ultrasonic cleaner or something as it's a bit dirty but otherwise, it's been a nice watch. I think I paid about 200 or a little more for it at least 7 or 8 years ago. Never needed service, on it's 3rd battery. Wish the glow in the dark stuff worked better but I can live with it.

A Rolex Sub for me. I have worn it just about everyday for the last 17 years. The only time I haven't worn it was when it was shipped to Rolex for cleaning. This is saying a lot, considering the last 13 years of it's life it's been in Law Enforcement.

Same here. I've got a Rolex Submariner I've been wearing every day (with the exception of cleaning service) for 23 years. That's 23 years of hard Army life on the watch and me. I think the watch is in better condition than I am :costumed-smiley-007

Ditto.
I need a timepiece as I have to be at four job sites throughout the day at a certain time.

Plus I feel "naked" without one.
I only take mine off when I sleep and shower.
Other than that, it is on all the time.

Even though my cellphones(s) have a clock on them, I prefer to glance down at my wrist.

Funny though, as even without looking at a clock/watch, I can tell pretty much what time it is with very high accuracy most of the time.

And CanuckMariner, please... You can't be bothered with a watch when on the trail? What, does the watch ruin the "getting away from it all" experience for you? But having a GPS unit is not, right? A GPS is a necessity, but a watch is just something that reminds you of the 9 to 5?

My favorite watch as well. Love the features, I have a Suunto as well but think the Pathfinder is much more intuitive to use. I am on my second Pathfinder PRG-40 in about 5 years or so, and will keep buying them as I wear them out.

I wonder if Overland Journal would ever do a watch comparison of these types of watches? Comparing accuracy of the compass, altimeter, barometer, and the timepiece itself as compared to the "real" versions of each measuring device ( i.e., accuracy of the compass feature vs. a handheld compass) , and then comparing the timekeeping to the US Atomic clock over a set period of time. :coffee:

Just a thought......

Absolutely, my truck has a clock built into it as most vehicles do I am sure, even the GPS has a clock built into it. What do you need a watch for unless time is of the essence and where is that?. Where do you have to be that you can't be within 15 minutes either way?

Along with paper maps, the GPS serves a real purpose, not getting lost or at least getting to the right destination going the right trail. Minimizes one's footprint on the trails (Tread Lightly). I would do with out them, if I new my way everywhere.

The idea, for me anyways, is to not be on a time frame when I am on my own time galmpering/trailing and enjoy the day as it comes. Let your body and mind tell you when it is time for a break, to eat, to sleep, etc. Minimize the technology one depends on. Just a philosophy and it minimizes the stress that life puts on us all.

If that's your philosophy, then why rely on detailed technology like a GPS? Seriously, you just made my point.

But you claim to use a watch, or a clock, but just not wear on on your wrist. That's fine if you do not want a watch. I'm not telling you you need to buy a watch or that you should wear one at all times. I'm not a watch salesman.

But what's funny is, you claim a watch is not needed because you're on your own time. You have nowhere to be and could really careless about what time it is. For you, having a watch is like being tied down and reminds you of the daily grind. You just can't find the reasoning behind wearing a watch, but you find a serious need for a GPS.

But what ever happened to exploring? Driving into the unknown? Getting out of your truck and hiking? You think these guys can give you GPS coordinates to some of these places? http://www2.expeditionexchange.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1187 Do you not feel that a watch could come in handy while in a deep canyon away from your trucks, or away from other members of your party?

How about if you go diving (http://sv4w.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/Vacation_475_%28Small%29.jpg) in some remote places? Is a watch still part of the daily grind?

It's fine if you do not want a watch. It's fine if you want a cheap watch. But a watch is very much a tool that should be packed in everyone's kit. A watch is just as important as a map and compass when traveling an unfamiliar area. Electronics can fail. Engines can fail. Parts can break. At some point you'll have to leave your truck (http://expeditionexchange.com/deathvalley2/42.jpg) and that fancy GPS is not going to help too much.

All very good points. However, the GPS serves more than one purpose: not only does it help on the trail finding my way to where I want to go, but it also helps me navigate the concrete jungles that one inevitably has to travel through, it also has a clock built into it, and is detachable so I can take it with me if necessary to hike or get lost with out my truck. I always plan out my trips so I have a plan in mind and why I am going and the GPS helps me get there.

Back to the watch thingy, yes I wear a diving watch when I dive to help me moreccurately keep track of how long I have been down and how much oxygen I have left. Tough to see the sun when you're down 60 feet sometimes. In diving a watch can make the difference in safety. However, in hiking or trailing it is mere technology that serves a minor purpose and I consider it jewelery.

I've had a G-shock for years. Just a basic one I got for free, Ford was giving them away at one point. Tough watch. Still on the original battery after ~5 years and keeps time very well.

I often strap it to the handlebar pad on my WR250 for timekeeping during enduros. Doesn't get much tougher than that.

It's not *Bling Bling*, but it's a watch, and it works. I have better things to spend money on.

My wife gave me a Casio Pathfinder for Christmas. It's more of a toy than anything. I wouldn't do the things with it that I would do with a cheap G-shock. The barometric feature is nice though, for weather changes. And I tend to rely on the sun for direction, but on overcast days that doesn't work so well, the compass can be handy.

I have found that price is not a good predictor of durability in 'outdoor' watches. I have two Omega Seamasters - one battery the other automatic. Great watches but the bracelets suck. Dust and grit wear the pins and tubes that hold the bracelet together, and the bands literally fall apart. Of course, the only bracelets that will fit these watches are only offered by Omega at several hundred bucks a copy. I've gone through four or five bracelets and had them rebuilt several times. Well over $1000 dollars in repairs and replacements of bracelets. Ugh.

So I bought a $75 Timex Expedition watch (analog) with a rubber wrist band, It 'takes a licking and keeps on ticking'. It does lose about 5 minutes a month.

FWIW, I, too, got a Timex Expedition, but for $25 a few years ago.
Takes a total beating and still runs fine.
Before that? Also a Times Expedition! Lasted for >10 years on a single battery (no kidding).
The band wore out but the watch still works (it sits in a drawer at home).
It was cheaper to get a new watch than a band.
They just can't be beat for the price.
And if you lose it, no biggie!

My 10-year-old Casio G-Shock finally died. Great watch. I replaced it with a Casio Pathfinder a couple weeks ago. So far I'm loving the pathfinder. The altimeter is accurate enough for general use. The compass is super handy. I haven't really used the barometer much yet. I love the looks of the titanium band. It looks good but it isn't too bling. I'm really happy with my purchase. Oh, and I plan on banging it up just as much as my old G-Shock. It doesn't seem like a toy to me at all. :)

For years, I did not wear a watch, as a phone always sufficed. Now, with all the moto riding, a watch is critical. I find that I do not mind them on my wrist anymore.

I wore this Traser through Central America:

Sinn makes soem great watches.. They have a military model for divers, filled with liquid that doesn't have problem due to the different ATMs during diving..

Mine is also a TISSOT. It is called a T-Touch Trek. Touch screen for controls. Very cool. The saphire face is recessed below the compass ring, and well protected from the bashing that the watch gets on my wrist.

Scott that Traser reminds me of the Luminox I got awhile back (http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=398120&postcount=58).

I am not into the chrome bands and shiny bezels, I like black bands and the watch dark faced too.

The gas lights on the Luminox are incredible.
No charging from the sun required, and they are very bright.
I can see my watch ten feet away on the dresser at night in the dark.

I also like the plainness of it.
Cell phone has a calculator, stop watch, alarms, ect, I really do not need it on the watch, and I do not miss those features at all on it.

Am I the only one that doesn't like wearing a watch in civilization? I find them annoying, especially when working a computer with something on your wrist. My cell phone has a clock on it, why do I need a watch? I only wear a watch when I leave my cell phone behind.

I have a trusty old Camel Trophy Chronograph; I'm on about the 6th battery and the 4th strap.

The only other watch I could imagine replacing my Camel watch with would be a Tissot t-touch.

I have worn watches since I was about five or six years old.
First one was a Mickey Mouse watch from about 1962.

I was given a Rolex sub date for high school graduation from my grandpa, and I got a panerai radiomir on a trade, but I find myself rarely wearing a watch, unless its on a special occasion. I tend to run on indian time as it is, and just dont have the need to see what time it is. However I do appreciate high qaulity i n anything, which is why I like the panerai.

Another reason to wear a watch. My comfort and continued medical stability rely on precisely repeated times for the measurement of my blood sugar (same time every night/morning and 1.5hrs after each meal). I could rely on a cell phone, but even the best cell batteries are good for maybe a few days. It is also thoroughly impolite to pull a cell phone from your pocket in front of a client, much more so than to look at a watch.

I am a huge fan of Seiko 5's. No longer officially available in the US, they are easily found on the internet for under $100. The 21 jewel automatic movement loses about 5min a month, and you do have to wind it if you leave it off your wrist for more than a day and a half, but they are nominally more environmentally friendly than a battery watch and the sweep second hand just looks so much classier than my beater solar powered Citizen's clicky clicky (seen several pages back).

I've got an Omega Seamaster Pro. But it's trimmed in gold, a little too fancy for daily use (I have also banged it up diving, and during general use). I'm thinking of getting it polished, and then shelving it except for special occasions. I'm surprised to read about the problems reported here about Omegas, but maybe it's like all other forums, you only hear about the bad cases!

For daily use I'm looking at either another Seamaster automatic in plain stainless, or a Rolex Sub. The Subs seem to have very cheap (and light) bracelets, and the clasp mechanism seems inferior (especially for diving), but hey, it's got that Rolex crown on it! So I'm not sure which way to go. If Omegas are good enough for NASA (and James Bond), I may have to stay with them. I guess I need to look at a few more Subs and Seamasters side by side.

The Rolex Oyster bracelets are admittedly hollow but they are exceedingly strong, as are the clasps. I promise you, they've been proven to last a lifetime in some fairly harsh environments. ;)

And if you lose it, no biggie!

http://www.geocities.com/daktaried/safari.gif

I'm wearing a Timex Expedition too. I bought it from Campmor in one of their Super saver sales or whatever they call them. $25 for mine with the metal band- it's got some brassing from sweat but it still works fine and it's on it's first battery too. I bought it in 2003 or 2004. I'm pretty hard on watches it seems and I hate to wear them so I never saw paying much for one. I did buy myself a nice Citizen when I came back from Iraq, but I ended up never wearing it so I sold it.

My first sweet watch was a movado se, followed by a titanium t-touch. Then a Sector 600 (POS), a Maurice Lacroix, and now a GMT Master 2. It s an illness, like land rover. The Movado does not get much wear. The T-touch is indestructible and after 5 years still on its first battery. The Secto rlet me down and cannot be repaired. The Lacroix was easily magnetized but that can be fixed easy enough. The GMT is new to me and I still can't believe I own one. My favorite so far is the t-touch for toughness. I have many cousins and uncles with the same one and they love em too. Not cheap, but also not a Rolex, but for the price it's un-beatable

Hi everyone, new here and I just noticed you were talking about watches. I think someone said it in an earlier post and thats when it really hit me that a watch is a mans diamond. I had a basic Citizen dive watch for about 15yrs and only about 3 real repairs in all. I finally had to retire it and sinse then have gone through a watch every year. I just picked up one of these from Suunto, we'll see how it holds up. Love the watches.

Man jewelry... watches are a boy's best friend.

Suunto Vector - I've had the same one for 10 years, replaced the battery twice, been around the world, desert and alpine tough, printed numbers and brand worn off the case and band; looks motivating - true expeditionary gear.

Marathon Diver's Quartz - equally tough when I feel analog-ish and withstood the same abuses as the Suunto; the workhorse.

Omega Seamaster - 25th wedding anniversary present (5 years ago), worn when I feel rougue-ish or get gussied up.

Old stand-by auto-winders I've picked up in Indonesia and Japan for a pittance (coup d'etat and favorable dollar to yen) and had for a couple decades now - Seiko Diver's watches Model 6309 and 7002.

I'm a watch fan and have quite a few but I particularly like my Rolex Sub date, GMT II (Pepsi bezel), and Omega Speedmaster professional. All in SS.

I used to wear a Casio or SA watch for camping but in recent years have usually defaulted to the Sub. It is a watch designed to take it and I don't do extreme stuff where the watch is likely to get damaged in any event.

HI All,
Interesting thread. I am amazed at how many folks here wear watches without a chronograph function. I have 12 good watches and every one has at least a chronograph. I would never buy a watch without one.

My two favorite everyday watches are the Breitling B1 and the Omega Speedmaster Professional X33. These are what are referred to as Pilots watches. I'm not a pilot but the wide range of functions are useful.

I also have a antique Omega Speedmaster Profesional Moon Watch which must be wound everyday. This is probably my favorite watch. I also have three additional Breitlings and several Citizen ECO drive chronographs. Two of my Breitlings are mechanical.

I too love Swiss watches but the Japanese watches are impressive.

However, when out in the garage pushing wrenches, I wear my trusty 30 year old Seiko digital. It just keeps ticking on and on and on and...........................

I've got some nice tool watches, OMEGA and Rolex in particular, but since I purchased this some months ago it's been about the only daily-wear watch on my wrist. I modded mine w/ some domestic Casio Pathfinder bits so it now accepts NATO straps.
