Ive been reading a lot on this site for the past week or so (awesome site by the way) and have seen quite a few options on gas cans it seems. Everything from NATO to Weldco with others mixed in. The way it seems is that the NATO can would be the way to go? Most of the ones I have seen though are used so do they not make those anymore? Also, what is the difference between pre-carb and carb?

NATO Cans: Based on original German 'Jerry' can design and utilizes a cam action locking lid which seals tightly and does not allow fumes to escape once closed. This is an especially good feature when used off road.

Wedco: Manufacturer of a variety of containers. When referring to Wedco gas cans' IMHO most are referring to Nato type containers but Wedco also makes non-nato gasoline/fuel containers.

CARB: California Air Resources Board. Part of govt of California responsible for setting standards in CA for fuel containers. Standards are followed by manufacturers who want to sell their fuel cans in CA.

From my observation, the reason traditional NATO containers are not CARB compliant is the spout is not sealed nor is it child/spill proof.

Problem is rather than offer 2 kinds of containers (CARB & non-CARB compliant) the manufacturers have elected to only offer the CARB containers.

Problem with the CARB containers is that ultimately the are NOT as leak proof as the Wedco containers when stored.

FWIW, where the rubber hits the road in this post...

I don't know of anyone who is willing to ride in an enclosed vehicle sitting next to a CARB container full of fuel. Reason is the gas fumes still escape and you won't be able to breath without getting a headache. On the other hand, I know of many who are willing to put their NATO cans full of fuel inside their 4x4's because they DO NOT LEAK fumes.

Occassionally a US retailer gets a hold of a batch of new Jerry/Nato cans however they are getting harder and harder to come by. I recently bought 4 new German Made Nato Cans via this forum.

HTH.

Not to mention the fact that gasoline doesn't burn, gasoline *fumes* do. I can't think of anything more dangerous to have inside your vehicle than a gas can that leaks fumes. Might as well be storing a leaking propane tank in your vehicle.

This has been a public service announcement from "The Committee Against Storing Explodey Things Inside Your Vehicle"

Great information there. So basically, a non-carb Jerry/Nato can is best since they do not leak fumes or fuel but they are hard to come by. I have also heard of some cans being lined?

IMO, and US military testing, Scepter cans are the best and safest hands down.

They are getting VERY hard to come by though...

Generally speaking, only food-grade cans (water cans, for instance), are lined.

I have the Scepter MFCs, the Wedco CARB, and the Wedco traditional or non-CARB cans.

None of them leak...not even a little bit. The Wedco CARB cans are just fine. Now, you may not like the spout, but if you remove the spout when you're done and screw the cap back on the can, they do not leak.

You can find more info here (http://www.expeditionexchange.com/wedco/).

I have a source for a couple of scepters. They are a little expensive, but they are brand new. I have a couple of the fuel cans and I have to admit they are great, just make sure you get the lids on nice and tight...

So now that this thread is back from the dead.... I still have a question or two... I realize that the Scepter cans are no longer available, and neither are the Nato style steel cans. What cans readily available on the market are capable of being mounted horizontally? Say on a roof rack. And if none, then what are you guys resorting to, since the "good" stuff isn't available any longer?(links to buy these are appreciated)

Ted, that's the first I've heard that of the Wedco CARB cans. Is this closed just using your hands or with a tool? Can you store them on their side without worry once closed or will then leak then? How hard do you have to tighten them and how hard is it to do that? I recall with the old Blitz cans, you couldn't tighten them w/out tools and even then it still didn't always seal properly.

I recently bought a bunch of cans from here, but looking tonight, they only have the 10 liter cans listed...

Would be worth snapping them up anyway, as they're probably the last ones available...

I'm trying to put together a group buy of the GOOD MFC cans.

WOW $269.00 for a pair? I have 3 for $25.00 each or $60.00 for all 3 + a fuel spout if you buy all 3. Plus shipping from El Paso, TX.

The green one already sold

These don't look as nice as the pair for $269.00 but they still hold gas like they do.

Things are getting crazy

Someone needs to make these and just exclude Ca from the buy list .

That's the truth. We can thank those morons for all of this craziness... But then again here in Tn things are just as foolish...

There are always these wide mouth versions. I don't know of any spouts for these but if you are using the super siphon it doesn't matter.

$30 for a banged-up surplus can? $269 for a pair of OD metal cans? Geez. What is the world coming to?

It looks like I could probably retire on the stash of new-in-box red Wedco non-CARB cans sitting in my basement, still in their original packaging. Should have bought more of 'em, I guess.

True dat!!

When we went on the Mojave Road trip, I brought along a Kolpin fuel pak that has a CARB "spillproof" nozzle.... The idea being that people should not be spilling gasoline on the ground, right?

I couldn't get the damn thing to work without leaking fuel everywhere. I gave up and borrowed a jerry jug from someone and transfered the fuel into that, spilling more fuel on the ground.

Got the fuel from the pre-CARB jerry jug into the XJ without spilling a drop.

Best to keep the RotoPax nozzle up. And keep an eye on the seals.
I had some small leakage problems when installed horiz. on an ATV. The plastic caps will crack and leak when they get very old. I wouldn't rely on them in a life or death situation/expedition type use.

CARB "childproof" nozzles are to prevent unrestrained flow if the can is knocked over.
Apparently there were some accidents/lawsuits. One more reason the gas can manufacterers will not make non-CARB containers for non-military use.

CARB also claims they are spillproof, but everyone I've tried, major spillage was the order of the day.
