So I have a unique opportunity before me. I just relocated to Naples Italy and will return to the States in a few years. At that time I can bring back one vehicle with me. So this begs the question, which one? I have been thinking about a Pajero or Trooper or a Crusier, each a turbo diesel of course. Need help in identifying the different models of each, which options to look for and if anyone knows where to get one in good shape. Any help would be apprecieated.

For resale and tech and parts support I'd say Toyota.

Don't be so sure that you can automatically bring one back. I was at Aviano 10 years ago and I tried to bring back a UAZ Patrol and it was a no-go. In fact, they were refusing to bring back US Spec cars that were brought over by the service member in some cases.

As I know, you are allowed to bring only US speced vehicles. You have to order from the US, get and drive it overseas and take it home- AS FAR AS I KNOW ONLY.
US rules are by far more difficult than European rules. Into Germany, a returning expat can bring any vehicle after min 6 months ownership abroad. It's not possible to sell this one during first 12 or 24 months. But the government accept vehicles as a part of your property.

Indeed, If it ever was true this law is off the books for many years by now.
