I just bought one....

http://www.magmaproducts.com/

What got me interested in them was all the mounting options. I was going to set up the tailgate on my Taco with a mount for the grill and the table they make. I changed my mind though because my build is already complex enough! So I am just going to use the grill normal style...

So has anyone used these before? They look really nice and tough too.

I've never used one, but the guys at my local BBQ specialist (that's all they sell :wings:) tell me that they are first rate grills for marine use. They are apparently very durable, and quite compact.

They're a bit on the bling-bling side for my tastes, but I'll sacrifice form for function any day of the week.

Here is mine:

I probably could do fine with the standard 14" size, but I was sucked in by the possibilities of the party model (17"). I don't think there is a better solution for an "Expedition Worthy Grill". Mine is propane, but they also sell a charcoal version. The mounts are very easy to set up for cooking, and when you're done with it, throw it in the Magma carrying bag, strap it to the roof basket, and forget about it until next time you're hungry. They are 100% stainless and can't really be hurt by anything. Indispensable piece of kit in my opinion (if you're a grilled food fanatic like myself).

Hey thanks Spence! :)

I knew somebody on here would have one. I have never seen or heard of them until I bought one recently on Ebay. I was looking for a quality grill that could take the beating of a really long trip and not let me down.

I've got one on the boat, it works well and is durable enough for marine saltwater use...

Well, you found it! I want to get an adapter for mine to quick disconnect from the unregulated side of my onboard propane circuit, thus eliminating the need for the small 1 lb bottles which are both inconvenient to carry, and wasteful for the environment.

Great! I pretty much want to do the same thing. No plans to use it with the small 1lb toss out propane bottles. I hate those things!! Do plan to get a hose and adaptor if needed to hook it up to my 5lb propance bottle.

I got a Newport which is not the round models but quality should be the same. I do like the mounting options for these, not using that now but in the future maybe. Just a nice option to have...

I am glad these are tough....beach use means salt air. Backroads in Baja and CA means lots of vibrations and it will take a beating. A grill though is a very important part of my kitchen so I am glad I found a tough one! :)

I've even seen, GASP!! someone cook on one at home by clamping it to a hand truck.......

I know that there's one in my future, sometime. My GF just won't be happy w/o a grill to cook on.

How hot do these grills get?

Very hot. If there's one drawback to them, it's that it's tough to get them cool enough for some grilling purposes (you're not going to slow-cook anything on one of these). For firing up burgers and chicken, there is nothing better.

I store mine in the camper and have a mounting bracket screwed to the front ARB bumper. Easy to set up, no worries about flat surfaces or tipping it over, and keeps smoke and grill odors out of the camper.

Works good :victory:.

The ideal grill for me would be tough as nails and have a temp range of 300-500 or so. What is the temp range of these grills? I've been looking at the Solaires but I think they might not have a wide enough temp range for me (too hot). I'm tired of buying the $30 units at Walmart every season. A grill is my main cooking method when traveling so I'd be willing to spend the money on something that will last.

Tough as nails...check. Mine came to me free of charge when a friend with an beachside apartment with a tiny balcony had the questionable judgement to get married. His main grilling device was the Magma currently suffering under my care; it was grody, had surface rust, and his blushing bride wanted nothing to do with it. She was ecstatic for me to take it away. Fast forward two cans of oven cleaner and some steel wool and it's sparkling.

Temperature wise may be another story - I've never thermo'ed it but would guess the coolest you're going to see may be around 400F, though I'll have it going next weekend and can give you some better data then. I imagine at its "exiting Earth's gravity" setting to be up around 650F.
