it wasn't my fault, they forced themselves into my hands I tell you...
First, a used but very nice condition S&W model 19, 4" barrel. Was a duty weapon for a local sheriff's deputy before his dept. switched to semi-auto's. Already has a pair of Pachmayr grips on it, found it at one my local gun shops for a good price. It was part of the deputy's estate which also included some other Model 19's with wooden target grips that looked like they'd never even been fired and a few other interesting goodies.
Second, went to yet another local shop to get some sling swivels for my 10/22, while there I was invited to look around as I'd never frequented the store before, wow... If you ever get a chance to go to Gun World in Burbank CA and you appreciate firearms, go there you will not be disappointed.
They have hundreds of new and used guns on hand and in stock, they display them in a very unusual way too, the long guns are either on wall mounted racks or simply hanging on the walls with some of them in glass display cases. There aren't any showcases to speak of, you can simply walk around and look and touch (ask first) some really nice weapons. I've never seen anything quite like it. No taking a number and standing around for an hour like at the Bass Pro shop, no waiting for the barely out of their teens mall ninja wannabes to finish their fascinating conversations about bullet penetration at the local Turners Outdoors, just good, solid weapons on sale by people who know what they're talking about.
Getting back to my find, while looking at the dozen or more lever action rifles I told the salesman that I thought I could stump him, asked if they had a Marlin 1894C in .357, he thinks for a few seconds, heads into the back room, I can only imagine what that place must look like, comes out with what looks like a brand spanking new rifle with a sling already mounted. Says it was just traded in the day before and I can have it for $399. Guy bought, didn't shoot it, traded it back in for a Glock. Same rifle that Bass Pro wanted $600 for last month that they'd have to order from Marlin with no idea of delivery time. While I'm looking at it, another customer says he'll buy it right now if I don't want it, too late I say, I'll take it.
So my .357 kit is pretty much complete, I need to get a decent holster and belt for the Smith and try to find some ammo that will shoot well in both pieces, maybe get a scope for the rifle, haven't decided yet.
Merry Christmas to me...
P.S. almost forgot, the salesman not only had the swivels I was looking for, he opened two packages to get me the exact stuff I wanted and kept the extra stuff telling me he'd use if for some other project. You can't beat that for service.
