View Full Version : Oasis II Roof Top Tent

I stumbled upon this tent through some old posts.
http://www.oasis-tents.com/tents.html
Some key features I really like are:
-Light weight (40lbs)
-Compact
-Ability to use as tent off the vehicle for exploring around "base camp"
-Probably room for couple boards on the roof underneath the tent.
For mild weathered baja surf trips lasting no more than 10 days, I think it would be fine.
I'm leaning away from roof top tents such as Eezi Awn and Maggionlina mainly due to their weight. My rear leafs are barely cutting right now but I plan on upgrade to some 8 or 9 leaf deavers soon. With other heavier tents, I'll probably have to go to a 10 leaf set up with frame re enforcments and re enforcmentgs for my camper shell. My truck is mostly a daily driver with empty bed. I've also read about the decrease in mpg due to aerodynamics with roof top tents.
My main concern is with the oasis tent is its durability and comfortable (fabric flooring). It would be great if I could see it in person.
Has anyone seen this tent in person or used it?
Thanks.
Jim

As I mentioned in the thread I pointed to I'd check out the Double size Tent Cot (http://www.tentcot.com/double1.htm) at about 1/3 the cost. Looks like the oasis could be the same product re-labeled.

its not the same an oasis and a tent cot, they are same idea, oasis copy tent cot on the design.
the price on the tent cot double is only 200 dollars on amazon, it might apear alittle more on amazon but if you add it to the basket then cancel the order and serch for it again it will come out at 200 ... dont know why but thats what happends ,we ordered two of this for some firends,
the size is nice ,, very easy to convert to roof top, however ,expect terrible condensation , due to its small size and because of the coating,
if you want to sleep and dont wake up soaked , leave a window all the way open.
i just cant justify the price diference between this 2.

Thanks for the input guys. Tent cot indeed looks very simliar. The design of tent cot is acutally better because its more of a dome structure.
If the double tentcot cost 200$ there is not way I'm paying $1K for the oasis even though if it comes with a ladder and better quality material but its not worth the extra 800$. I think they set the price point really high because of the competitors.
I noticed a disadvanted with the oasis tent. If you mounted on top of a truck with a camper shell with a yakima or thule roof rack, the door and ladder will only face the rear or the front of the vehicle which prevents entry to the truck tailgate area due to the ladder. I like the entry/ladder on the side of the vehicles like the other RTTs.
There is an option to have the entry on the side of the vehicles. You just have to build a platform or another set of cross bar perpendicular to the exiting cross board which is more work.

The Oasis might look similar to a Tent Cot, but they are absolutely nothing alike from the frame on up. I had the chance to use one for a weekend with my son and found it to be a fantastic rooftop tent (I think Scott had a chance to look at it that weekend too, so maybe he'll also chime in). The only thing the Oasis doesn't have going for it is the classic Brownchurch "hut" look. Technically though, it is a fantastic product w/ nothing in common with the cot-tent.
The Oasis frame is much more solid, has a better suspension system, and is designed to hold two adults without extra supporting legs (2 legs vs 4 on the cot-tent queen). The tent fabric on the Oasis is heavy thick canvas, the mosquito netting is heavy and thick, it has thick solid zippers, etc. It is designed much better than a tent cot with all sorts of little ergonomic tweaks that make it easy to use, keep well ventilated, and setup/teardown.
I believe the newer Oasis 5 tents (5.2 and 5.3) use nylon fabrics but I haven't seen those for sale in the states yet.

Thanks. I guess the only difference between the 5.2 and 5.3 is size. It would be interesting to see the difference between the 2 and 5. I thought Oasis was american company out of OR.

Trekking claims that Columbus was their idea which was copied.

The Oasis is made in France by Trekkiing products and distributed in the USA by Oasis-tents USA and sold through the dealers.
I don't expect to see the 5.x series in the US anytime soon, but I could be wrong.

So, what is the opening characteristics of it? How do you open it in other words? EzeeAwn and others its a clamshell and you pull the ladder over and you have a place to sleep. Is the Oasis a quick opening, easy setup?
I think the design is growing on me. It looked inferior to the other products out there, but seems to have good reviews? I have an Xterra and the lightweight lower profile design would be best for it.
Thanks for your help.

I think it opens in a similar fashion. IMO, the fact its half the weight of EzeenAwn other RTT with the ability to remove it and to used a base camp is as functional as they get.
Did I say half the weight? That huge. I throughly read trekking's website. They appear to be a solid company and responded to my email very quickly. Their design has won some awards in Europe.
I wish some one would step up and become a reputable distributor for them. Rogue River Trading (the listed supplier for oasis) or whoever they are dont even have any phone and dont respond to their emails.

I may bite the bullet in a month or two and get one of these tents. I think it would serve my needs well and may encourage more camping trips. Im all for pitching a ground tent, but I've had enough of water running under the tent in down pours at night. My only real concern would be lightening storms? (I tend to plan weeks in advance to go camping on the stormiest weekends)....
Whats the risk of a lightening strike in a roof top tent??

I would say slim chance since you are mounted on top of your truck which is insolated from the ground due to your rubber tires. Not impossible, but not likley.

Hey Todd,
Looks like the sleeping platform at more of recline angle than flat?

there is a bit of incline at the head but it is hardly noticeable with the mesh flooring. I get the question alot, especially from stomach sleepers, but it is really comfortable and hard to notice the incline.
It really takes laying in one to understand how comfortable it is.

Actually, I prefer a little incline :) It would be cool to try it out in person. Wish there was a retailer in Nor Cal

Central Ca, San Luis Obispo. Check www.everythingsuv.com talk to Kendra and ask if they have any in stock. I know they used to keep a couple of them around.
