A long time ago on a trip to the North of England, my wife and I took a shot of a very funny road sign depicting two elderly people crossing the road - a warning sign of a retirement home ahead. Thus began a decade long collection of road sign photos.

Here's a few of ours.

Yes, that is exactly the sign. I found our shot of it when we were doing The Great Purge in prep for this upcoming expedition, but I don't have it in digital form.

I'm not sure, it's been a few years since we were there. It could have been Dingle or one of the other ones. I think we covered them all except the far NW corner of the Island.

Here's some more car on cliff and in other imperilment signs:

Scott,

I know some people who have done it on bikes. I also know some resources along the way.

We may come back that way from SE Asia. It would be 2-3 years from now, so if you're interested, maybe we could meet up in Western China / Mongolia / Tibet / etc. and come back to the Med. I would want to swing down through Iran since we missed it the last time we were in the region.

Lots! The more places you go, the more realize how much is out there! We've only been to 38 countries, so there are many more places yet to discover out there. Major gaps in our resumes are South America, Antarctica and SE Asia, which is where we're headed in a few weeks.

BTW, I really like your sig with suggested listening and reading topics.

What a kick! I'm getting caught up Post Dakar. :)

BT, maybe that sign in Thailand had to do with peppers. :) :)

I've always loved the signs describing the impending disaster that awaits the unsuspectiing motorist/pedestrian, especially the car tipping off the dock or end of the road.

Below is a couple of my contributions.

Some of these are hysterical! And great reasons to use trustworthy translators...

I really wish I had a picture of this, I'll try to get one...it's in a town in the Cascade foothills east of here:

Picture a nursing home on one side of the street with a crosswalk in front. The sigh says 'caution' and pictures two elderly folks crossing with walkers...on the other side of the street is a cemetery.

At approximately 36*33'33" N and 105*2'59" W, on Highway 64, just west of Cimmaron, NM, viewable from the eastbound lane. Some vandals embellished this sign for greater impact, but it struck us as pretty funny at highway speed. We had to get a picture of it for this forum.

Here's one on Hwy 36 between Fort Hood and Abilene, TX. I cannot recall exactly where it is, but a funny story accompanies it.

We were going to a relative's wedding in Abilene and did a double-take. We turned around and got some pictures of it. Just for the record, the bull in the picture was pissed that we were standing so close to his pasture.

Later that summer, we took some customers on a boondoggle to Vermejo Park Ranch near Raton, NM. The fly fishing is amazing there. Everyone caught fish, so we came up with some gags to pass out at dinner our last night.

I had framed up a photo of this marquis just for this purpose, LOL. "So for our catcher of the smallest fish, next year, instead of Vermejo, we're sending you on an all-expense-paid vacation to the Deep Bleep Cattle Company!"

Everyone was amazed at the photo, that someone really named their ranch that way.

This place is between Sopchoppy and The Dog Island Ferry in Florida.

Its Hell because the Mosquitoes have Tattoos and they run in Packs. 3-4 hold you down while the other stick ya.

Here is the official story.

The Legend of TATE'S HELL...
A tale that has been told for many years recounts how Tate's Hell Swamp got its name. Local legend has it that a farmer by the name of Cebe Tate, armed with only a shotgun and accompanied by his hunting dogs, journeyed into the swamp in search of a panther that was killing his livestock. Although there are several versions of this story, the most common describes Tate as being lost in the swamp for seven days and nights, bitten by a snake, and drinking from the murky waters to curb his thirst. Finally he came to a clearing near Carrabelle, living only long enough to murmur the words, "My name is Cebe Tate, and I just came from Hell!" Cebe Tate's adventure took place in 1875 and ever since, the area has been known as Tate's Hell, the legendary and forbidden swamp.
Couple other funny signs I have been collecting off the net.

I wonder, does sacred white buffalo jerky taste any different than regular old brown buffalo jerky?

One thing I think is involved is a cermonial cleaning off all the tools and processing equipment before a run of sacred jerky.

I'm easily entertained, but I always get a kick out of the 'FRESH JERKY!' signs.

Oh, and the guy that used to set up on the corner in Colorado Springs selling 'FRESH SEAFOOD!'

Desertdude

The real kicker is that they advertise, and have on the premisses, "sacred white buffalo" which they charge a fee to view.

They also sell buffalo jerky - how fresh or sacred, I could not tell you ;)

Whatever a "Centroid" facility is... it must be kinda important because I stopped to take this photo & didn't see any vehicles anywhere, walked around the front of my vehicle to let some liquid out, and when I came back around to take the picture there was a MP truck parked a couple hundred feet behind me. I'm assuming he came from the dirt road, but I sure didn't see him as I drove up.

Anyway I took the pic and left.. he didn't pursue me so I guess all's well. :D

Whatever a "Centroid" facility is... it must be kinda important...

In geometry, the centroid or barycenter of an object X in n-dimensional space is the intersection of all hyperplanes that divide X into two parts of equal moment about the hyperplane. Informally, it is the "average" of all points of X.

What ever in the HELL that means, thats what a centroid is. Got that from Wikipedia.

Thought these were pretty cool. All along the fence of the PennDOT maintainance building in Meadville, PA on Rte 322 are a whole mural of road signs depicting everything from a rural road, county fair, and lake shore to these gaint flowers. If you pass this way slow down and check them out, Pretty cool stuff.

Thats the sign you pass as you drive down the ONLY road that accesses Ft. Irwin outside of Barstow, Ca. Its where the Army does all of its desert warfare training. Pretty cool place. Funny story: the Army used to send the base canoes and paddle boats every year because on the map there are lakes and rivers. They didnt stop to consider that the base is in the middle of the desert and the water is underground.

One of my favorites. In a small town where all the old sit around and watch traffic on the eastern shores in Va. Look for the sign on the fence:
