CAPTAIN COORS

the pig is a wild Javelina and the thing in its nose is jumping cholla which is very painful, Most people think of Javelina as "pigs", just a desert variety of the common barnyard animal we all know so well. The fact is Javelina do share common ancestry to old world pigs and even similarities in appearance. However, Javelina have many significant differences. They have a different number of teeth, a different gestation period, a complex (versus simple) stomach, and a musk gland on their backs--the fact is, they are not "pigs".

Both Javelina (collared peccaries ~ tayassu tajacu), and pigs are members of the order artiodactyla, suborder suiformes, sharing a common ancestry dating back some 30 million years. But, because of significant anatomical and genetic differences they, have been placed in separate families - pigs in the Suidae family and Javelina in the tayassuidae.

Thanks for the lesson. What is the javelina's range? There is some definate talent in this forum.

The frog shot was actually taken by my wife, but with 'my' camera (not so much mine any more :( ) It was shot with a 24-105 lens at 105mm and a distance of maybe 1.5' with ISO400 setting. I love the Canon 5D as a 100% crop gives you the eye below.

The second picture is the little guy all closed up. they are hard to spot.

If I had the money id upgrade to the 5D, Fullframe is awesome. I have a 1.6x crop 30d, does me well though and Im still learning different methods

Harriers have a white rump in flight and a more owl-like face. Your bird is most-likely a coopers hawk. They love to eat birds off feeders. Cool photos. :clapsmile

You know, you're right. I think. Looking back at the book it noted that Cooper Hawks are 14-20". Which way do you measure that? When I went foot to head it was closer to 8.5". Also, in one of these photos it looks like the brown on the chest goes all the way up, where as my Audobon book picture shows the Cooper with more white on the neck and the smaller Sharp-Shinned Hawk as more brown all around. So now I'm just confused.

We have a coopers hawk that comes by our yard/feeder every once in awhile I thought it was a sharp shin but from you description that “Coopers Hawk frequent bird feeders” I’m assuming it’s a coopers hawk.
My wife and I would like to start bird watching this year it’s amazing how many birds you see if you just stop walking and start looking. We are waiting for a class from out local Museum of Nature history this spring. until then, we just have our Sibley’s
http://www.amazon.com/Sibley-Field-Guide-Western-America/dp/0679451218

can you recommend any other books that would help us?

Back to the birdfeeder and coopers hawk, totally amazing to watch the happy birds flittering around the feeder, then swoosh! predator run/fly away!!!! We have even seen the hawk go threw hedges after prey. some times he just swoops threw the yard and lands on the fence as if to say “I’m the king look out!”

O yeah, our humming bird feeder is a lot of fun also but I have bored you all enough…

Matt W

PS I too would like to see more pictures from the Galapagos.

Per a discussion with Chuck, I had to dig deep to find any wildlife photos in my stuff. Unfortunately nothing exotic like a Jaguar, (who can top that?) but I did find a couple of critters in my collection -

#1 - Momma Grizzly Bear in Yellowstone NP
#2 - Momma Griz in YNP, giving me "the look"
#3 - Bison in YNP
#4 - Wild (?) Peacock along the Salmon River near Shoup, Idaho
#5 - Young Ram on the road along the River of No Return Wilderness, Idaho
#6 - Adult Ram near Babb, Montana
#7 - Collard Lizard on the White Rim Trail, Utah
#8 - Chuck wrangling a Midget-Faded rattlesnake on the WRT, Utah

That last shot is nice and probably the last thing a lot of small critters ever see.

I'm assuming the Northern Flicker was a Red Shafted by the range described. I actually came really close to figuring it out. I saw a Gila Flicker was really close in looks (because my books shows more of the Northerns with a distinct red mark on the head mine didn't seem to have) but obviously the wrong habitat.
Thanks again. you're now officially "that one bird guy on that one site you go to" according to my wife.

It is the red-shafted flicker variety. They do look a lot like the Gila WP. If you were in southern AZ, I would have looked a lot closer at the photo. I have some photos of northern flickers in the hand someplace, can't seem to find them now.

Are the Flickers common in the midwest? When i used to work vineyards, we'd see a bird that looked alot like that during harvest time. They seemed to really enjoy eating the harvest. Would a woodpecker do something like that? The resemblance is uncanny.

This is an Elephant Seal (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=12732&d=1196398699), correct?

I saw and heard a couple of them playing in the shallow surf near Cambria recently. The weirdest noise I've ever heard, one calling to another. Their heads are so prehistoric, it was tough to tell them from a rock when they surfaced.

Hi KC, They are amazing. If you are ever in Northern California in late January, check out around Point Reyes National Seashore area. They are often sitting on the beaches sunning themselves.

Looking at 40D's. The main thing keeping me from Nikon is the button layout. I have an older semipro 35mm eos that I love even more than the XT because of its size and layout.

They came in so close to where I was shooting that their tail slaps were getting me wet. I am semi deaf, to many big waves slamming me when I was younger, and was able to hear them breathing. Did you take this photo? I'm damn jealous. Nice shot. I've only seen one in the wild and I didn't get photos, it happened too fast.

Yeah, I took it--year and a half ago on Thanksgiving. I think it was a once in a lifetime moment. For me, anyway.

Ok so some older shots that were taken over the past 4 years.

This was taken last year on the Hillsborough river. The pigs are common but most people do not get to see them. I was on a private guided trip with a small family. about 4 miles intot he trip these 2 adults along with the piglets came down tot he river and were messing about in a small bog about 30' from us. I was only using an olympus sw720 for this so no real zoom.

Several years ago in Baja we passed quite a few instances of a vulture sitting on top of a saguaro warming its wings in the morning sun. It was a beautiful iconic site. With all the Baja travellers here I scanned the thread hoping to see one posted. No luck...

Anyone have one to post?

Yes!
In one morning I'll bet we passed 20 different vultures perched ontop of whatever was along the side of road trying to soak up the morning sun.

Thanks!

We did the same, nursed a Kestrel like that back to health after it was caught by some yahoos who didn't know how to take care of it. Long story, but they turned it over, finally, to the San Diego Wild Animal Park/Zoo, and because of some connections we had with people we knew, we got to keep the thing for 4 weeks then release it. It was really great for three boys in grade school to be able to have something like that in their home for that time -- we fed it mice on the kitchen counter.

The snake is a Gopher snake, used to catch those all the time when I was a kid -- they can get really big.

Cool story on that dove lqhikers, it is a eurasian collared dove, a european species that was introduced by accident into the Bahamas in the 1970s, it then made it to Florida in 1982, and has since spread across the entire nation. They are pretty and have a nice call.

Waterfowl commonly hybridize, especially where there are domestic flocks present like at a park. Your bird is a hybrid muscovy duck, no idea what it hybridized with, but that is common. Check out this link: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/crows/domducks.htm

LOL I guess it is all relative. About 15 minutes before I saw it I was standing in the water cutting a downed tree with 2 large gators about 15 away. I guess you could say I have no fear.....I mean sense when it comes to getting close to wildlife. I think when you deal with wildlife on a daily basis you realize there are much scarier things in life like zombies and hieghts :yikes::yikes::yikes:
