Driving the Old Coast Road near Big Sur, CA. Next is my little 3 year old at our local ski resort. He's a great little skier taking on all the Blue Runs. The last picture is of my 6 year old (then 5) on the 9th pendulum pitch of 16 pitches on Royal Arches (5.7, A0 and 1600ft) in Yosemite Valley. He did his first multi pitch climb at age 3.

Yep they're fun to have around, and they love to go camping and hiking. :)They are less than 2 years apart so they get along most of the time.

We got a rescued dog not too long ago, who melted our hearts, then suddenly died, leaving a giant hole in our family (and bank account). A friend in the Jeep community healed our emotional wounds by donating a beautiful miniature Australian Sheppard. The joy this new puppy provides my kids (as well as us parents) is immeasurable.

I was working on a project last night where I needed to select a few photos of my family enjoying camping/hiking/outdoors. I just couldn't do it. Each gallery I went through as I toured the dusty corners of my hard drive was just so nostalgic I couldn't make a decision! I did however, narrow it down to about 70 images :-)

So how did that go?

We ended up cutting our trips short. Total sleep deprivation should only be practiced for short periods of time. :elkgrin: I often have trouble sleeping anywhere other than my own bed, and then add a baby who is also having trouble sleeping anywhere other than her own bed and... uh.

I don't know if we'd all settle down into a routine if we stayed for a longer period of time, it's too painful to find out. So, just weekend trips so far.

Otherwise, we haven't had any troubles camping.

We had the same problem with all 3 of our kids. the first night is hard, but nights 2 and 3 are great and eveyone sleeps.

I asked the wife to scan our old photos of me with my oldest son (when he was only 1 year old) staring over the edge of Toroweep Overlook (Grand Canyon, North Rim).

I never thought of what we do as "expedition-like", but after being on this site for a while, maybe my family is not so weird!!! We NEVER take the paved road to any city if we can. We are always seeing trails and saying, "Lets see where that goes."

This is one of my new favorite sites to visit!!!

2 pics froma trip I just completed Monday...

Blackwoods campground, Acadia National Park (10 days!!), and my kid doing her first real hike (about 2.2 miles, up and down, up and down, etc).

I was extremely proud of her. No complaints, had fun the entire time, and only asked me to carry the stuffed moose once (granted, it was the only thing in her pack).

We did the whole trip at her pace, so there was no drudgery. She absolutely loved every minute of it, and is ready to go back.

Taking the "Kazooki" with us, as she calls the Suzuki Samurai, was a blast, and is getting us geared up for some real exploration out West, as we get our feet under us, and learn how to do this.

When I was a kid I remember trips crammed into the back of a 1978 Chrysler Cordoba. My sister always owned a pet hamster, and we had nobody to take care of the little rodent(s) so she'd bring it(them) with her cage and all. The cage would go in the middle and it'd become a shoving match between the two of us. We'd cram that wire rib-stabbing torture device back and fourth trying to eek out another 1/2" or so of butt room on that tiny bench seat. My kids ride in individual captains chairs in a van I can nearly stand in... kid's these days, they don't know how good they have it. Maybe that's why in their outdoor photo's they're always smiling.

My wife and I adopted a boy recently and had no children prior to. We have been fosterparents since last Nov. when he was only 5 months old. His adoption went final in the begining of August. Well we hadn't had much of a chance to take him on a "trial" camping trip or 2 before heading out on the 2011 UP Overland trip. He turned 14 months old a few days before we left. We had no idea how he was going to do. Luckily, this was how he was most of the trip of 3 nights rough camping.

I wouldn't have believed it had someone told me in Sept. of 2010 my wife and I would have adopted a baby boy within a year. We didn't get that 9 month prep time most people get! We are both in our 40s (its not easy chasing a little one when you get older!) and have only been married 5 years but he has been a huge blessing to us and we enjoy every minute we have with him. Knowing our Sawyer loves camping makes it even a bigger blessing!

Thanks Joash. Next year will prove to be better with the wife cutting back on her job that interfered with my weekends off. We will definitely be seeing more of the outdoors. And maybe even some of Europe. My sis and her family are moving to Wiesbaden Germany soon.

Well after our camping trip was cut short due to heater failure in 30 temps, I packed the family up at 1 AM and drove home. If it had just been me I would have toughed it out, but with my 8 mo old daughter along I made the call to go home. Scott, not sure why I didn't see this until now, but that canyon is one of three or four slots in close proximity to each other along the Hole in the Rock trail in Escalante, Utah. I don't remember specifically which is which, but I think the names are Spooky, Peek-A-Boo, and either Brimestone or Coyote (I can't remember which). The one in that picture is the easiest of the three we did. It is probaby Coyote, but I can't confirm it. I know that Peekaboo had a difficult climb to enter in, where the mouth of the slot is about 15-20 feet above the sandy floor of the dry wash, but was really fun, and I know that Spooky was pretty tight for my hefty proportions, but my son loved it. I had to help him up and through a few of the reaches, but nothing that couldn't be accomlished without tossing him to the next ledge :-)

Turns out the enclosed deer stand we built for my mother in law, was perfect for the two of us to spend the afternoon.

I know, looks bad don't it! It's not the greatest set up, we usually go to the range.

Our shooting at the cabin is usually .22's and handguns, and some clay's. (and only 20 yards from the backstop)

But to get some range (70 yards from where he's at to the backstop) we move back near the cabin.

The car/garage are 20-25 yards to the side, but it doesn't look like it in the pic.

Attempting to start the new Year out right and keep my kids appreciating the outdoors. We took a day trip out to the coast of NC to watch the sunrise on 1 Jan.
We started doing this last year when we realized that with 3 kids our new years evening of partying late into the night was a wash. Sometimes you just have to check your priorities.

Awesome adventures with your kids! How old are they to be that active? My little girl is 5.5 and she is spending several hours each day on her bicycle. I'm about to get her out on a wide trail. Kid #2 will be here in a couple months!

Awesome adventures with your kids! How old are they to be that active? My little girl is 5.5 and she is spending several hours each day on her bicycle. I'm about to get her out on a wide trail. Kid #2 will be here in a couple months!

In the photos my son is 12 and my daughter is 9. I have another son who just turned 6, also. Living in Southern Cal provides the opportunity to explore nature, from easy hikes to really difficult stuff. For example, just 2 miles from my house is a nature preserve that allows for miles of pretty flat hiking/biking on both fire roads and single track. My oldest began biking the preserve with me when he was 5. Of course, my daughter wanted to join as soon as possible, so she has been riding since about 5, also. I have found that once my kids can ride a bike with 20" wheels and gears, they are capable of some trail riding. In fact, my youngest just joined our mountain biking since Santa crought him a new bike!

My daughter's first real test was when she was 8. We were car camping on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada @ about 9'500' and I hiked her up to 11,500' over 5 miles. That was a long, challenginf climb for any 8 yr-old. Of course, there was some cajoling on my part..."It's just a little bit more"...and, "Let's go another 15 minutes." Soon enough, we reached the pass, and once my daughter saw the other side, the wide expanse of meadow, streams, and lakes, she was so amazed that she announced on the spot that she wanted to go down there! Of course, we didn't that day because that would requires backpacking, but that's what I wanted to hear!

My tips, allow for many breaks & SNACKS. Other than that, nature is so invigorating: snow in the mountains in July, streams, lakes, etc. One last tip, my daughter loves ice cream, so every time we return from something strenuous, I always treat her with ice cream. :)

Sometimes, I have to push my kids a bit, but they have learned that there is nothinng like a summit, alpine lake swim, secluded beach, etc. I have always planned a destination with a view, and my kids now take pride in knowing that nobody in their entire school has experienced the views that they have. Ha ha!

My youngest can only go so far, so you don't see him in the photos I posted, but he is just too young to pursue the strenuous hikes. He still loves to run all over nature, without regard to its inherent danger. He's learning, though, and it's all a blast for me to witness.

Enjoy these times with your daughter and, hopefully, she'll be ther with you doing something you both love!

Awesome, Bonked! I love seeing kids outside!

My munckin has been on several hikes, up to about 6 miles, on relatively difficult terrain (no real elevation, but plenty of elevation change) and in some serious heat. We stop when she wants to and go when she's ready. My only tip is to NOT carry the kid... they'll try to become dependent on it and at the first hint of being tired they want a piggy back ride.

I'm searching for a new mountain bike and we'll be riding soon. Her bike is just a little 12 or 16" single speed, but she's getting the hang of it.... even stood on the seat last night! Kind of scary, but she learns well from crashing! :)

Here's my son last summer at a little lake up in lassen national forest a stones throw away from lassen national park called Blue lake, it was about a 2 mile hike to get to here from the trailhead. Not a soul around and water so clear you could see all the way to the bottom 100' out..

Thanks. She loves the outdoors; that was taken at the end of a 4-month wilderness survival course she went on (in the winter no less). She can make fire with a bow drill that she made from scratch herself. She's 19 now and just getting into technical rock climbing.

Had a blast! JP has Asbergers Disorder, and this was a big trip for him (for both of us, really!) 4 days, mom was 150 miles away, and he slept in in his own tent (with the dog), even through 2 thunderstorms!

Seems like after the first camping trip to Lake Powell, UT at 4mos old, my son was hooked! Now, after 6 yrs we have camped in 7 different states, Mexico twice, and even in an airport! We are always on the lookout for a new adventure, and many more 4 wheeling trips to come. I can't imagine going without him :)
