I'll go... This one was taken in southern Belize last year. One of the prettiest sunsets I've seen, but the photo wasn't even close to doing it justice.

Here's another, although I didn't take the pic. This was just outside of Chobe Nat'l Park in Botswana.

While the picture was being shot, I was busy digging a stuck Land Cruiser out of the soft sand, oblivious of how cool it was until we got to camp that night and did some "chimping".

One at Red Rocks, a great place to enjoy a concert... Then one from last years "Outlaws Run" while camped at Crystal Geyser, along the Green River. Cool thing was, while out there this year the sun set in almost the same way as last year. Only it was about 30 deg that night.... Then one from Wes on last years run again. On our last night, we came through Black Dragon Canyon, then the highway back to base camp. Stoped at the rest stop on the way back, didnt want to miss a great sunset(thats Black Dragon in the background)

Nice... Sadly, in all the years that I've lived here in Denver, I've never made it up there for a concert. Heard its one of the best outdoor venues in the world.


On our last night, we came through Black Dragon Canyon, then the highway back to base camp. Stoped at the rest stop on the way back, didnt want to miss a great sunset

I have seen many shows at Red Rocks, if you get the chance do not miss it. It is a GREAT venue.

I do recomend you go next summer! I only realy like to see shows there now, man am I spoiled. It was fun to wheel with Wes and his BJ, he does need a turbo on that thing though.

Alright, a few of your pics Scott, reminded me of this pic from summer of 2004. Joined up with Jeremiah Proffitt and Ian from Proffitts cruisers to run Carange canyon (Buena Vista), yes I rode along. And all the other fellers backed out at the last moment.... This is from the sunset/storm saturday night, looking twards Mt.Princeton. Sunday Jeremiah and I drove up it. Fun weekend.

Wow, look at all these shots....nice work fellas and gal. I read somewhere that Galen Rowell said, "Next time you're shooting a pretty sunset, turn around." Thus, I rarely get a sunset photo. This one comes close, though.

Here is a real fast shot tonight.....I was setting it up...I was even going to take out that railing....and even wanted to try and get the sun coming through the Jeeps windows, and the pier is just to the right! Then all of a sudden it started up and was about to take off so I had to quick snap it.

That panorama shot looked familiar... and I was thinking the west end of the front range in the Catalinas looking across the Tucson valley. But somehow I couldn't make the mtns on the horizon line add up, even imagining a hand-held pan with the camera. Then I went to your flickr album and saw the caption "Milagrosa" ! Wow, that brought back great memories. I have been back in Milagrosa and Agua Caliente many, many times. What a beautiful place. That night shot with the lightning is great too, and the silhoetted saguaros - great perspective and colors.

Wow! I have almost the exact same photo. I'm digging through my Bridge files now to find it...ah ha!

Shot Oct 26th at 4:24:56 PM, 1/400 sec, f/10, ISO 100, 35mm with my 16-35mm lens. I like your color better, but it's interesting how much sharper mine turned out. Looks like the sun messed with your AF a little bit :-)

High dynamic range imaging.
Typically it's three or more pictures, taken from the same spot on a tripod, merged into one. One picture is under exposed so not to blow the highlights, one picture is exposed properly for the mid tones, and another over exposed to bring out the detail in the shadows.

You merge the photos in photoshop or other similar programs that can create HDR images.

I don't have much of a camera, but I have been fortunate to see some really beautiful sunsets. The pictures in this thread are awesome. It really makes me miss Arizona. Growing up in Texas, I thought we had the best sunsets, but living in Tucson I learned otherwise.

Usually not a big fan of the sunset, but this one is about so MUCH MORE than just a pretty sunset. That's what makes it stand out.

Nice job seeing and capturing. You transported me there and made me feel what it was like. Photography is about feeling, not about taking a 'picture'.

That last shot was taken driving into a place called Cape Keraudren in far northern Western Australia. We had been driving all day and it was a welcome relief to almost be at the ocean and camped on the beach after doing a week of outback desert/red dirt driving/exploring and camping.

Environmental sciences, surveying and photogrammetry, expedition logistics or medicine, environmental education...

I know exactly how you feel. A few others and I, have been placing our copyright, right on the image. You can create a 'brush" in Photoshop, to make this much easier, and scalable.

Thanks, we just moved to the Oakland Hills from San Francisco about 2 months ago. The commute is a bit longer, but I have a lot more room in the garage and the view was a big selling point. :)

From two known points, with no other information, I don't think you can perform the triangulation to find the location from which you took the picture with any degree of precision. Maybe someone smarter than I can tell me how to do that. Thought about trying to estimate the angle between the bearing to Santiago and the sunset, but it wasn't clear that would be at all accurate. Based on the location of Santiago Peak and the sunset in your photo I think you are very generally speaking either in the San Jacinto area or the San Gorgonio area, and you would need a fair degree of accuracy to distinguish between the two.

Generally speaking my guess would be you are somewhere in the vicinity of Idyllwild west of San Jacinto. There is a dirt road that heads up a hill in a southerly direction out of town. At a junction you can turn right and climb up to an isolated pine covered promontory that has views in the direction of your photos. It's been a long while since I've camped there, but I think you may be able to see either Diamond Valley lake or Lake Perris from there, which could be the body of water seen in your photos.

If this is indeed where you camped I want to know why you are camping in my secret location, and request that you cease and desist immediately! ;)
