View Full Version : Trail Outfitters New Expedition Rig...Toyota 4X4 Chinook
Trail Outfitters

Here is our new shop expedition build. I found this locally on CL and couldn't help myself. The previous owner took great care of it, and started to restore it. The fiberglass is in near perfect shape, 22r with 20r head, 5 spd trans, and spiffy blue interior. We fit the tires which are 32X11.5 BFG Mud Terrains. Pulls great and should have NO major power issues.
We will have this down at the Overland Expo in Arizona next month!
Plans:
Paint white
Custom front bumper
Trail Gear front springs
Fix some camper mounting points
Gut interior and build minimal cabinets, kitchen, sleeping area
Fix passenger door after a failed break it.
New flooring(not sure what...ideas???)
Plenty of other ideas!

Thanks a lot guys. We just got done stripping the inside of the camper out. Going to do a lot of reinforcing. The old interior seems like it would crumble apart on a washboard.
The canvas is in great shape.
You guys might kill me if you knew how much I paid for this!

Ummm keep guessing.
Well lets say this...
What do you guys think it is worth? mind you the drivetrain/chassis are in great shape with 5 speed, great fiberglass and canvas.
I'm trying to get a feel for what I can sell it for after the summer. Will a nice interior and paint.
I have to remember this is a business and as much as I want to...I can't keep everything!!
I am planning on getting a lot of use out of it this summer.

So cool.
My dad had one back in the late 70s
I remember family trips from TX to Iowa in it, 4 kids & two dogs in the back driving down the highway with the back door open and the screen door closed.
I drove it to the drive in movies & remember my dad saying "the seats stay in the up right position":wings:
There's one parked on a side street here in town hasn't moved in 5 yrs not 4 wheel dr but would be a good project truck.
Thanks for the pictures.
Welcome! Where are the pics?
Thanks, Oh!! OK, heres a pic for ya.
They built them from 73 to 78, no factory 4x4's, but there were some done by dealers using the early Wolverine conversions, but it added around 2500. to the price tag so weren't a big seller back then.
TrailOutfitters looks great, a transplant at some point, as the camper shell is either a late 76 or 77 model from what I can see.
My brown one is a 76, still full funtional motorhome, the blue one a 75 with many changes and no longer a motorhome in the back.

I am curious how the power is in these things with the original motor? Sluggish?
Has anyone ever put one of the chinook campers on a newer Toyota mini truck? Like an '04 Tacoma with a 3.4?

The original 2wd with the stock 20R did fair, converted to 4x4 I imagine they would be a bit sluggish for sure. I really can't honestly say as both of mine were converted and engines and drivetrains built before I really drove them to any extent.
I have seen them swapped to many different chassis's but can't say I,ve ever seen one on a newer Taco. Personally I like the body style of the original truck they came on, my next choice would be the 79-83 chassis as they still flow with the body lines fairly well, the newer trucks just don't look right to me, but thats just my opinion and personal preference.
OK, just a couple more pics then I'll quit :sombrero: engine in my brown 76, 20R on steroids, many mods along with dual Mikuni sidedrafts.
Blew runs a late model 22R with again numerous upgrades and is force fed via a supercharger.

Just got back a few days ago. Have tons of pics and even some video from UP Overland. Check out their site at UPoverland.org (I think).
Went over 3500 miles with almost 500 off road!
Slept in it for 20 days
Only fixes were fuel pump wiring and my oil pan gasket that blew out as soon as I left Moab. Good timing because I would have been screwed. Changed it in the parking lot of the parts store and made it home no problem.
Truck ran great the entire time on and off road.
Also, WON THE "SICKEST RIG" AWARD AT CRUISE MOAB!!! Out of probably 200+ rigs and many $30+ ones.
Highlight of my trip.
I will make a thread in the completed expedition section this weekend.
Thanks,
Scott

Does anyone know how to jack up the front of the 2wd 1977 toyota pickup? I want to flip the rear axel but don't know how to do the front.
My interior will be replaced with a eurovan camper one I found. Lots of work ahead!

Awesome find! My advice would be to find a 4x4 donor truck and replace everything. You should be able to find a 1st gen 4x4 for pretty cheap, especially if its not running. Converting a 2x4 to 4x4 isnt as bad as it sounds, especially if you have a straight axle.
I'm going to leave this one 2wd and just put a locker in it. I guess I need larger front springs and a spoa on the rear?

Hey Nook, PM sent. Speaking of Chinooks, one newer improvement to this search site (http://www.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/mash.cgi?cat=cprv&itm=chinook&loc=&fil=&ys=1972&ye=1979&submit=++++go++++) is that they capture images from Craigslist now, so we can more quickly pick which Chinooks to look at. Can't say that I've seen any 4x4 conversions to the Toyotas there, don't know if anybody ever converted a Datsun version.

I dont have much experience with the 2wds. Your truck should have a set of a-arms and coil springs in the front correct? there may be some kind of aftermarket lift kit for the front. I dont know.
I found this 2wd one for sale in Vancouver bC built on a Dakota chassis! Easy v8 swap if it didn't have one already

Please Please Please tell me you were NOT going to buy a rare vehicle to cut it up and put on your 80! :Wow1::Wow1:As a fellow overlander I would think you would see the value in keeping this original. These can be had for a lot less that what the asking price is in 2wd and you wont be ruining a Radical truck. Sorry for the hijack I just thought it was necessary.

As said in the thread a few times we are not cutting this one up. NEVER!!!! We are using a 2wd we picked up for $900.
We have everything to start on this project just trying to get some other customer's Cruisers out of the shop first. Our Client has some great ideas for us!!
The 4x4 Chinook did sell. The new owner is flying out in September to pick it up and drive it home. In the mean time we will be rebuilding the axles front and rear, installing a 2 inch OME lift, and installing 80 series TRE and a beefy tie rod. I will get pics up once we start.
Thanks for all the kind words on the Chinook. It was hard to let it go, but I can't afford to keep everything I buy...even though I would like to.

Nice looking project.
The best way to jack it up would be a SAS :-P (http://www.trail-gear.com/ifs-eliminator-kit)
BTW, I had a Chinook a few years ago... sold it to fund a trip to Central America.... here are the photos from the ebay auction incase anyone is interested.
