Hello everyone.
My name is João im from Portugal - Sintra.
Once i came here trying to discover more about the Iveco 40.10 4x4, its reliability, and common problems.
Now i come with the truck already bought!
It all started way back when i got my first car. It was a 1994 Renault Express 1600 Diesel, Witch i have transformed rapidly into a surfing mobile van. After that bought a 1999 Peugeot Expert 1900 Turbo Diesel, because of the extra space, and the 3 places in front. In witch i also did a transformation, just a elevated bed and table seating area.
After, and thinking about a more comfortable way to make vacations, since i never spent vacations in other way, i thought about buying something that was already a fabric built expedition camper. The Answer? A 1981 2.0 Aircooled Westfalia!
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v815/104/107/1029392525/n1029392525_2175242_8559.jpg
After wonderful vacations and time spent with the Vanagon, i realized me and my family would need something bigger and stronger for the future. Same as always i sold the VW Vanagon and started searching for a Iveco 4x4, reachable to my "pocket". And that, just by that is a hard job to manage in Portugal.
After a while, i could with some luck find a 1998, Iveco 40.10 4x4 2800TD, it had 80.000kms, and it was always from the same owner.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2489/3966605910_31a9a3503e_b.jpg
Because i am an Architect, and the living as always been an issue of interest in my studies and life, i decided i would make this as my own project.
I called this M.A.D (Motorized Architecture Development)
After seeing and making deep investigations in web, i would project a mobile 4x4 motorhome, in a polyester box, that could give me, my little boy, my wife and my dog, the same comfort we have at home.
Many things went into count, but in the end i decided i wanted a double bed, that was separated from the living area. A Toilet space, a living room that could turn into a double bed at night.
Because of the short space i have to work i decided to use the entrance chamber, also as a toilet/shower space. The cabin and the "box" will have to be separated because of legal issues.
And i also have the overall weight issue to deal about.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3468/3975121958_77fb8ff0bc.jpg
There where some changing, these were the first guidelines. The entrance chamber is now a little bigger, and there is no storage space in the front, instead there will be a permanent double bed there.

I have "stripped" the Iveco, painted the chassis Black with an appropriate paint to maritime environments, and the cabin itself in White (Mercedes Artic White).
All the interior as been refurnished and uphlsteary job done with black CORDURA tissue i bought in ebay (pictures later).

Now the Truck is already in a friend factory, mounting the polyester box in the chassis. All the rest will be done by me.
I already have the doors, windows and sun windows to mount.
Because i have in my work place a CNC machine, i will be sculpting in 3d propylene everything i can there.
So i will have a personalized bath basin, the toilet and kitchen basin's and much more.
I want all the truck to work only with Diesel. No Gas.
So only the refrigerator and the interior lightning will work on electricity.
Water and air heating will be done with a Truma Diesel Water and Air heater, and the cooking will be done in a Webasto x 100 diesel cooker.
As soon as i have more news and pictures i will post them here, so you can see the progress.

Good luck with you build! I will certainly follow your progress.
Your truck really cleaned up nicely.
I'm looking forward to following your progress.
Thanks for sharing!

It looks to me that it would be simple to double the rear wheels since they have a high offset. If you planned for that in advance, you could buld the camper ~ 500mm wider to fit over the wider wheels.
That would require a modification to the side view mirrors of course.
But then there would be no danger of overloading the rear tires which is always a worry with SRW campers with small tires.

Welcome to ExPo, Sardinha!
The plans for the living quarters look very good. I would recommend
carefully considering the vertical distance between the top of the truck
cab and the bottom of the cab-over section. When the truck chassis
travels over uneven ground, the frame twists to keep the wheels in
contact with the ground. The same effect occurs along the long axis
of the truck when you drive straight through an obstacle like a roadside
ditch. In this case, the frame bends in an arc so the front and rear axle
move a little bit closer to each other. In either case, the cab-over section
might come into contact with the roof of the truck cab.
There are three solutions. First, don't add a cab-over section. (not good
because you give up important space in the living quarters) Second,
make the truck chassis so stiff that the living quarters remain in a fixed
position relative to the cab. (Not good because you give up wheel travel,
making the vehicle less capable off-road). Third, mount the living quarters
on a "torque-free" subframe that allows the chassis to twist without impacting
the living quarters (more complicated and more expensive than option 2).
There is plenty of information about torque free mounts in these web pages.
You may already have a solution in mind. Let us know if you need help.

Haven, a torque free subframe does NOT prevent the cabin from twisting relative to the cab. All it does is prevent the cabin from being subjected to twisting forces that will eventually damage it.
The only way to prevent cabover contacting the cab is either supplying enough clearance, or rigid-ifying the chassis.
Look at 3rd picture down; this is with a torque free camper support:

Very cool. How much weight is that chassis rated to carry and how much will your box weigh?

Dear Charlie and Chip.
Thank you very much for your advices! All help and suggestions are welcome!
About the Double wheel and the gaining wide space, that would be great, but the legal issues around that solution here in Portugal, totally ruin that option.
About the problem of over-cab space, that has been a subject that as always been in my mind, and that really makes me lose sleep.
As you say and perfectly Chin, i have do have the 3 solutions you mentioned. My problem, is space, and again the issue about the maximum "legal" size i can have in the "box".
I thought that giving space between the cab and the Box, would make possible the cab-over solution.
I also saw this somewhere, what do you think?
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/5748/unionplataforma3.jpg
Silenblocs and asparagus with screws and springs in the bottom of silenbloc to stop moving the chassis without pulling the base of the cell, suposly that leaves the cell "free" more moving, only limiting their travel with the spring tension.
Do you think this is a good solution?
I will talk with my friend, the builder of the propylene box, the good new is that he works making this boxes in trucks for more than 15 years, the problem is that he as never done a 4x4 truck! So i will consult all about this issue, and solutions given here in the and forum.
As soon as i have something more certain, i will come and ask for your advice.
Thanks a lot! Hugs from Portugal!:victory:

Well, after long talks, thoughts and investigations i decided that the easyest and wisest to do, would be to not have a "capucine" area in the sleeping cabin.
This makes it possible to sleep, eat and shower for 4 persons in the interior (if needed i will mount a tent in the roof rack for add more 2 sleeping places) and at the same time with less weight, and more 4x4 capability.
The interior layout will be the same as it was before, but without the "capucine".

Howdy Sardinha,
Looks like a fun project. Anything you can do for more family time is a plus. Will the outer surface be plastic then?
Good Luck,
Chas

Dear Chas.
The "living box" will be in polyester, and the interior walls also.
Doors are from a Swift motorhome (ebay), and windows from Seitz (S4).
All the interior will by done by me. A lot of parts from Ikea, and the kitchen basin, table and living area, and the shower tray and basin will be made in molded polyproylene, by me in a CNC Milling Machine.
The Roof basket, i will try to buy made, but in last resorce i will do it myself also in the milling machine.

Like i promised here is the final interior layout of my Iveco "Living Box".
Since the start there were many things i knew i wanted.
I wanted a "Living Box" where 4 users could sleep, eat, and have a usable toilet with hot water shower.
I also wanted to have a a bunk bed for two persons that could be separated from the living area, this way someone can get a sleep without beeing bothered by the one's that stay in the living area.
I think this layout is a good compromise beetwen what i wanted in the start and what i needed, leaving the Truck lighter.
The cabinets, and the bed structure and matresses i will buy from IKEA. The Cabinets are from Kitchen FAKTUM in inox. (if i realize they are not good enough, i put them in the box after one year and collect the money back!)
The Sofas for the living area, the table, the kitchen countertop, the toilet shower tray and the toilet basin, will be done by me at work in white polypropilene with a 3d milling machine.
I will have 4 diferent storage places, one acessible by the outside, that can fit a surfboard size 7'' and many other items.
The food and living acessories storage will be on the kitchen upper and lower kitchen cabinets, ikea as good and clever storage systems.
The clothes storage will be under the sofas, in a system i am designing and hope that leaves enough space.
I still have the roof rack in the Iveco Driving cabin, to storage tools, a generator and other stuff.
The Truma Diesel heating system, the clean water 150 liter deposit, and three 120ha battery's will be situated under the first bunk bed.
The waste water deposit will be located in the outside, as well as the extra diesel deposit that will suply the Truma heating system and the diesel cooker.
Hope to hear your comments and advices.
Best regards

Hi there Alaskaboy!!! You know the problem here in Portugal is that there are very big legal issues to do such a simple thing as removing seats....or adding diferent seats....
After i have all done, and after some expeditions "in the pocket" i will do so!
Better to have 7 and not need them, than have 3 and need 5!

Hello everyone,
A long time ago that i don't give any news, or post pictures.
Much of this time was spent to earning the € € € needed to buy the Heater ands the cooker, and now I can say that everything is already purchased.
I've been on eBay for a long time waiting to find a Webasto Diesel Cooker X100, and a water heater and air Truma Combi diesel, and finally I have them!
I Already have the Box in the van, and i have also installed the windows, lugage door and skylights in the cell.
I have also mounted a Yakima roof rack (modified and larger to cover the entire cabin).
I'm now doing the interior technical instalations (water, waste, and electric) and the structural part of the furniture.
I have already doce much of the furniture cut, I still have 40% of cutting. As told before eveything is beeing done in a CNC (3d Milling Machine), and it is getting great!!!
I hope that in 15 days i can post newer and actalized pictures.
These are old pictures but anyway you can see the support system chosen

sponged on flecktarn camo would be pretty cool
Hi again, Sardinha!
I like the application of the marine ladder. I've seen quite a few rigs that used marine fixtures and appliances, but never a folding dive ladder. That is very resourceful.
And the upholstry looks great.
I don't see where you listed your destination plans (maybe I missed it), but for me personally, I would not do the camoflage paint scheme. I think border crossings could be difficult in a military-looking vehicle. It does look cool, though. I like the look of all three, but the dot camo (fourth picture) is my favorite.
Add my name to the list of people who are anxiously waiting for more pictures!
Victorian
12-02-2010, 02:27 PM
I would really rethink the Camo!
I have traveled many times in Tunesia and Morrokko. Most of the attractions are in the south, close to borders. Especially in Morrokko, I had seen tons of military and police. I don't want to know how they would react to a unknown camo truck close to the border...
I think you could get away with a nice sand tone color, something that would blend in, but imitating a military paint is bad.

Here in the UK we have a rule that limits the rear overhang to a maximum of 60% of the wheelbase, or in other words, the distance from the rear of the bike carrier to the centre of the rear axle must not be more than 60% of the distance between the two axles.
I assume that this is the same for the rest of Europe.
There does seem to be some argument here as to whether a bike carrier is part of the vehicle or classified as luggage which is subject to different rules.
Might be worth checking before you build!
Tony
PS No camo!

Ok thanks.
I think it is the same here in Portugal. Normally if it is something you can attach, and detach, they dont consider it as part of the truck.
About the cammo, the 1st option of the cammo (A), it is a pattern i have designed and that i used for the interior furniture. Is is based in a 3 hexagon, so it can multiplies. But in the furniture, instead of the grey gradient, it as holes, so it reduces the weight of all the furniture, but doens't loses the structural force.
That was why i wanted to use it.
What if i use it a little bigger and with more white. Less agressive?

Hi there. It is CELUCA PVC (Plastic) Foam. Used in Kitchen tables and working tops.
I have cutted all the furniture in a CNC machine. It was made from the Voronoi geometry, then i have aplied a Computer Script, so that i would be able to calculate the weight stress, and considering the full weight all the interior ikea boxes would have, how much could i take from it turning it as light as possible. In the end i could turn the weight to almost half!

This is a wonderful build... Thank you so much for sharing it with us! I really love seeing the innovation people have when building their trucks on here.
Can you please share with us floor plans, and photos of the interior forward of the entry door? I am having a hard time trying to understand what you plan to do there.
IE will that be a living space, and a sleeping space, or just a sleeping space? Will you put a bed on rails that can raise up to the roof, and be lowered when needed? (I like this idea because then I do not have to make the dinette into a bed every night. Plus it adds a spare bed should we have anyone wishing to stay with us, such as family who might fly out to see us, or something of that nature.)
I see the new steps on the outside. Can you give some detail on those please? Did you decide that the boat stairs were insufficient for some reason? Why?
Also I did not see... What year was the truck built?
It sure looks amazing! Thanks again for sharing and congratulations on being able to build your dream truck!

Dear Brian,
Thank you for your reply. In fact the challenge of building a minimum "home" for 4 adults in the truck, is indeed a great exercise for an architecture project, and it was with this in my mind that i executed it this way.
I also had the weight problem, because the 40.10 is usually rated above the 3.5tons, but mine is raited bellow, so weight was an issue... as it is in all 4x4 campers.
The Plans remain the same and you can see them in page 2 of this thread.
The interior foward of the entry door is the shower tray/space, that now as a door made from this material: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_aGSbhg7BlUE/TKkKThGzJjI/AAAAAAAAAfg/V8Em-5yb4e4/s1600/IMG00381-20100929-0945.jpg
Entering the living area you have the kitchen, at your left the two bulk beds, and at your right you have two sofa seats (one bigger than other and with slightly different back inclination so it is more relaxing and comfortable), and a folding table at the centre, that unfolded makes for 4 person +1, and folded is enough for 2/3.
All the furniture was made first in 3d. With the Voronoi Diagram http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voronoi_diagram, this diagram is great because of the structural forces within the design that it produces. The objective was to remove the most possible weight from the furniture, and don't loose resistance. With a computer script for RHINO i have design them regarding the full weight of the IKEA boxes, and the structural stresses it can produce when in moving. In the end of this geek talk, i could take 50% of weight!
The boat stairs where very weak. And it wasn't easy for my wife and kid to come in and out....not nice for high woman shoes...understand? ;)
Next week i will show the project how it is ended and post more pictures, in the meanwhile all the pictures are here:

The Truck is from 1997 and it had 87000kms when bought.
Best regards!

Thanks.
I had been concerned about those stairs for the same reason, I am actually sorry to hear that they did not work out for you, as it certainly seemed like an economical solution.
I like the adjustable nature of your new stairs, it is very cool to see how they are able to raise and lower to the level of the undulated ground.
Well, again, thank you for sharing, this is wonderful information. My best on your continued build.

I like the use of space in the entry, cleaver, but wonder if you're concerned about slipping on the wet floor after someone showered there while exiting the truck?
It's long way to fall on your head.
That or someone opening the outer door while you are sitting on the throne doing your buisness. Could get embarrasing!
Dirt on the bottom of the shoes will turn to instant mud and be tracked into the camper.
I've always considered that part of my Motorhome a waste of space!
You just gotta rermember to dry the floor and use the locks.
At least the stink will vent outside easier!!!!!:Wow1:
It's still a cool build!

Hi guys,
Been following this thread and this fantastic build :luxhello:
Last week while on vacation near a small village on our beautiful coastline, I managed to get a spy photo of the finished project. :victory:

Unfortunately it was dark and didn't want to attract any unnecessary attention to the camper. Either way, it's better when you see it live than through pics!
Congrats once again! Cheers
