Just got our Flip-Pac for our new Ford F-150 Super Crew short-bed; haven't had a chance to camp in it yet, but did manage to replace the two incandescent bulbs with LED's to minimize battery drain. We'll be using it with our travel trailer as a campsite off-road, where the trailer can't follow. The short-bed still allows room for plenty of storage while allowing a relatively easy parking job in the city. These pics were taken in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (CA).

Wow! I love your setup. I had an 85 4Runner until just recently. I had explored the options of putting a camper on it or modding a flippac or something onto it, but deemed it a lost cause after finding zero info on it being possible.

One thing, how well does your rig take to the highways? By that I mean, I was lucky to hold 45 - 50MPH up I-70 with only about 50 pounds of gear in the back in my 4Runner...

Thanks. Well, I haven't tried it yet to be honest but I imagine it'll be quite a bit slower than that. I think I'll have to use 2nd gear, and I don't like going over 35mph in 2nd. I'm used to it though...the family camper I grew up riding around in is 22-RE powered and good chunk heavier with the class-C camper body on a dually rear axle. It's usually 2nd gear most of the way up the I-70 passes.

That's alright, it's faster than biking, and you see more than those who are flying around on the roads.

Nate--nice hardside. I don't think I've seen one that bolts on like a shell before. Looks like it has all kinds of opportunities for interior mods.

How does it work lifting the cabover Alaskan in blowing snow like your Montana shot? Do you end up with a bed full of snow?

Thanks

for sure. after a day of playing in the snow it was great to crank up the heat and get a hot cup of irish coffee going. The evening of that day shown in the picture we ended up camping out there. got down to about 15 degrees, camper stayed warm though. those heaters do their job.

While rain or snow getting in an Alaskan cabover while being raised or lowered is an often repeated criticism it has never been an issue for us. Maybe on the older ones with the hand operated pump but the electric pump has it up in very short order and the drop time is also very quick.

Are those lights on the back of your camper wired into your backup lights or are they more like a porch light switch in the camper?

I want to put some better lights on the back of my rig!

They are porch lights wired into the camper. Not back up lights, would be a cool idea though!

GSBfree,
Thanks for the comments...good to see some pics of your rig too....looks great! You need to post a few of 'em over on WtW!

I scored a sweet deal on those American Mojave's which instigated the lift. I installed a Ready Lift 2.5" levelling kit up front and a 2" block in the rear and then crammed some BFG AT 285/75/16's in the holes. I always thought the huge fender wells swallowed up my 265's. Over all with the new tires the lift is ~3".

used 50 lb. struts. I decided on side mounts due to the lack of structure above the rear door. I went a little over board on the solar panel and it was too much effort to raise the roof. The support angles that hold my solar panel run almost full width. Panel is 130 amps.

Hope this helps.

Do you have any issues getting the top down with the struts on there?

Jeff Wanamog
07-19-2010, 06:57 PM
I set it up so that when I pull the end supports over center to initiate lowering, the top doesn't fall on me but needs just a little pulling. Not much though. I like having more initial power when raising the top because that is when I am hunched down. I don't have back problems, but after my heart attack I was told to limit my lifting.

Our 1991 Cherokee with custom Phoenix Pop up is our new baby!
We are excited about adventuring in our camper, but have only made it a few hundred miles from home on some pretty light trails so far. Maybe someday we can take our time and work our way all the way around the WORLD in this great little rig!! WE'LL SEE.....

Hey, does anyone have advice on how I can put those really nice LARGE PICTURES on my posts.

I have my pics hosted on another site. I use SmugMug mostly b/c you can view pictures on that site in the original size. So, I can direct somebody to the site for really good views. It has lots of other good features but also costs $35/year to subscribe. (I have a coupon you can use is SmugMug interests you. Enter this code when you join: SSrZ54yJrWCbI. There is also a free two-week trial available. https://secure.smugmug.com/signup.mg).
With the pics hosted on SmugMug, I click on the little picture icon (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/images/editor/insertimage.gif) in the Reply frame and paste the image location in the dialogue box that pops up asking you to paste the location of the image.

Voila:

For over 37 years now, we have done custom pop up fits on just about every kind of vehicle one can imagine. just now started really telling everyone about it.

Here are a few interior pics... But for some more information, please check out this recent magazine article about the company.

f_skinner, nice shots, how was the fishing? I was thinking about trying out Antero Reservoir some time, have you been there? I hear the fishing is hard to beat. Here is a shot of Chinns Lake near Fall River Reservoir from a Few weeks ago. It is a great spot but too crowded in the summer.

I have not fished Antero in about 10 years but yes it is a great spot. 11 Mile is hard sometimes but the key is to wait until dark when the water cools down a bit near shore. I caught my limit in the few hours of trying...

Edit: After checking out the other pages in this thread, and after a pm I received, I thought I'd add some more details.

Truck and camper is as above. 5/4 ton Chev ex-mil diesel. 4.56 gears, Corporate 14 bolt rear with a Detroit locker, Dana 60 up front with a posi running on 9.00 r 16 (36 x 10.5) spring over axles. Mods are 90w solar to the big blue top, custom bike rack, solar shower, one kick butt no head (mp3 only) stereo system with an 800 wt amp and 2 big kicker speakers (one pivots to face outside, also speakers sub as a great surround system when watching DVD's on my laptop off of the pure sine wave inverter), new furnace, ez awning.

Can't really think of more that I need except for a big LED flood for the exterior and maybe a cheap water pump so I can wash dishes with 2 hands. Over the last 60 days I've spent more than 40 nights in it, and it's not even hunting season yet.

Still plenty of mountain biking to do. Lots of truck mods that I've done, and the camper is stocked with all the goodies. I have duplicates of everything I have at home (which is easy, because I live in a 225 sq. ft' trailer, but I'm a gourmet cook who loves to fish, bike, ski (159 days last year) and hunt). You know it's a bad when you run out of something at home and know exactly where it is in the camper.

I wish I could afford a fridge, but I make do.

Every worked great, my Buddy especially appreciated the AC and generator, he had gone to a party the night before and had been over served, he loved napping at 3pm when it was 97f outside and a lovely 74f in the camper. I have only owned my FWC Finch since Sept 2010 and slept in it a total of three nights. I really like it and it seems to be great qaulity. I was supprised at how well it was constructed, It is a shell model with furnace and extra battery options. The original install was a bit squeeky, so I added a quarter inch of rubber mat and two more elevator bolts, as well as made some front mount hooks on the frame of the truck. To secure the camper from moving in the bed. It stays put and only takes a couple hours to load or unload. The camper is comfortable for me at 6'1'' and my wife and two large dogs. I have the roll couch, screen door and roof rack options also. This camper will be put to the test this winter and I'm confident it will be great. Thanks to FWC for making a superb product.:jumping:

I bought an early 80's FWC Grandby spring 2010 for $500. I have recently painted it and added a new door from FWC. We took it up to Moab this past weekend and now I feel that the camper is apart of me. This is the best truck camper I have ever owned. Here are some pics of my setup. Here's my weekend getaway rig. I picked up this old school camper on CL for $225.00, gave an extra $25.00 for the mounts and then modified them to fit my truck. probably have a total of $325.00 into getting this camper on the truck. I was lucky to find one in such good condition for so cheap. Guy (original owner) just wanted it off his truck. I also picked up a towbar on the corner for $10.00 and mounted it to my Rubicon. Works great for weekend getaways.

Still working on some water storage, outside shower, and awning ideas.

Here's a pic of it on the side of the road.

I almost bought this camper a few years ago. It is a Northstar TC 850, but it turned out to be too much for my Titan. The owner decided to keep it and had sent me these pictures after mating it to his new F-250. It's a beautiful rig, so I thought I'd share it on this site.
(I have since found a TC650 model that is more manageable for my Titan. Pics of my rig are a few posts above)

Is this a pop top camper? And if it is, the first two pics are top down looking for a beach camping spot.

I just received my All Terrain Campers Ocelot last Friday. I ordered it through Jay Aronow Camper sales and received it only 4 weeks later! Glad to get camper ordered before the 2011 price increase. I believe the weight is only 550 pounds. I don't even feel it on the truck. I'll have actual camping photos later.

I am more confused now than I was before I looked at it. I do like it. I'm just not sure why.

That's nice. What locker are you running?

It is the factory Dodge. When one ordered "limited slip" in 2006, you'd actually get a locker, I think made by Eaton. It works flawlessly. I had a 2003 Ford with factory limited slip that was worthless.

Awesome Skamper! Whats the year/model? I have an 89 OS06. Yours looks great with the utility bed! Any cool mods, fixes, or recommendations?

Here's my setup. I got it in decent shape, but been bringing it back to life for the past year. Fun project. I had to build some boxes/shims to get it to fit on my truck, but it added plenty of storage. My build/mod thread link is in my sig.... I just realized I never posted picts on this thread.

The model year is a 1990 and it is an O72S. I haven't done much searching regarding the Skamper brand and the little I have done seems to only bring up a few things regarding there pop-up trailers. I will do some tech stuff on it eventually in its own thread or maybe add some info to yours.

This is prior to adding 10 plys and air bags. Hitch went from 14in to 8 1/2in with trailer. Rides much better now not much sway at all. Been reading and lurking for months really appreciate all the helpful info in this forum. Jayco had a leak or 2 afraid to look under skin yet just know there's rot there. But it's pretty clean inside and I am going to try it for a week at Daytona next month and see how it works out. Thanks again for all the ideas.

Thought I might add my effort to the forum. Custom built for remote outback expeditions. Car has just gone 12 months old. Build was completed in May 2010 (if these things are ever considered "finished"). Rear pod is lift off. Front pod is permanent with all the essentials (batteries, power management, fridges and tools). Vehicle was cut in half and lengthened by 500mm at new.

Broke her in on a three month, 14,000km jaunt across some of the western desert regions of outback Oz. 1800 km "off track", and only 2,500km on the black top. Performed faultlessly. Love it.

"Creating the dream off-roader". It's a fairly lengthy diatribe including most key areas of the build and the how’s and why for’s. Plenty of photos. I have also followed up with some personal product reviews on some of the products used in the build and just how they stood up to the rigours of true expedition travel. Recommend my engineer Marco and Allform industries to anyone.

You'll find the product reviews pretty close to the top of this index list.

Love it when your camping in weather that allows you to have all the windows open on the Flip Pac...talk about fantastic cross breezes. This pic is from Quartzsite Arizona, the evening after having my Flip Pac installed in Phoenix just hours earlier...I was on the way to Southern California. I was fortunate in that I planned the install of the Flip Pac around a road trip so got to use it extensively immediately.

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n637/xsocalguyinnm/atthreeriversnm.jpg

Three Rivers has very impressive rock art over a large expanse. I was on my way home from California, decided to go up through bottom of state of New Mexico so I could go to Three Rivers...where I live at 7500 feet elevation in Los Alamos, in October...the snakes are already in their winters sleep....silly me...I was venturing at Three Rivers and encountered very angry diamond back rattlesnakes still out sunning themselves...elevation does make a difference in October in New Mexico!

UPS just dropped off the new Rain Fly from SLO Sail and Canvas...wow amazingly easy to put the fly on the Flip Pac! Impressed with the coating on the fabric on the inside. I am going to apply the nikwax tomorrow..but I bet I don't even need to....thats how it feels anyhow. The other cool thing about this fly...is the cream color goes with my Flip Pac tent color...our's isn't gray like all the newer ones.

I love that the tent size is the same whether you have a small truck as we do, or you have a gigantic turbo truck such as "Suntinez" has ;-)

I don't have many pictures of my homemade camper but I found these on an old computer from when I had added the fold up bed platforms. A basic shell, I don't really want all of the other camper bling. Lots of fun over the years but if I had known about them back then I would have just bought a new flippac.

I used to own an '03 Starcraft Starmate 9 1/2' pop up. I bought it in '06 and used it for a few years before I sold it. Mine was basically in new condition and had a bath and shower.

Cool. The lack of a stand-up door is one thing that has (literally) kept me out of most pop-up truck campers. Have other manufacturers done anything similar?

My neighbor buddy’s sad Palomino Bronco. It is barely 6 years old and leaks like a crazy and has more rattles than Babies R’ Us not to mention the interior that is literally falling apart. He is an older gentleman and takes really good care of his stuff and is just sick that his Palomino has totally self destructed in such a short time. The main reason for his structural issues with his Palomino is due to the stand-up rear door as there is no structural integrity to the rear wall (or sides for that matter). He couldn’t believe how quickly the Phoenix pops up when setting up camp and packs back up when you are ready to go home. To pack up, he spends 20 to 30 minutes raising the top to release the rear upper wall, then lowering the top, tucking in the fabric, folding in the back wall, then making at least 3 laps around the camper as he lowers it in order to tuck in all of the molded fabric. That is a huge compromise just to have a stand-up rear door.

Interesting, my palomino has the full size door like that but the upper wall around it folds accordion style. I don't see the middle hinge on yours so I assume yours must disconnect at the top or bottom.

The upper wall on the Starcraft campers also folds down. You can't see the hindge in that pict but you can see it in mine. There are clips at the top of the upper wall that hold it to the roof and a clip that attaches the upper and lower portions of the door.

A few pics of my truck with the '94 Hallmark Ute 8.5' camper I just picked up. Stayed in it the night I picked it up and loved it!! Notice the tall door, which is NICE!! Did some light wheeling to get to a trialhead and it seemed OK. Planning to add solar to charge the batts, and city water hookup with a two handle faucet. Needs some work where the jacks mount up too... Plywood is soft. I revised the front tie downs so they are inside the bed, like a FWC. Not much room for the rear one in the bed unfortunately, so it'll grab the bumper.

mine had the tie downs on the jack mounts like that. I drilled and bolted in U bolts a couple feet forward to use the in bed tie downs. I bought 4 U bolts and used the nuts and flat bar from two to double up the others, flatbar and nuts on the inside and outside of the plywood.

Hi All,

I'm new to form , but not to camping or adventure trucking or biking .
Just got back from a week in Death Valley on my XR650l ,:bike_rider: also have 4 other bikes and three of them are dual-sport too!
This is my first post and hope my pics come though ?

I got the T100 a few months ago and the flip-pac a couple weeks ago .:wings: They both need some work . I've been wanting a flippac for about 15 years ever since I first saw one ! The T100 need new heads , the flippac need the roof repaired . Someone had torn a roof rack off the top along with the tie down arms that go to the hood and it had holes in it ? I used some expanding foam and Bondo and fiberglass repair to fix it ? Then made my own lock down arms because flippac didn't have them and they didn't call me back ? Then made a couple rods to pick up flippac and put on truck ? Also just picked up a carpet kit that will help make it nice and homie ?:sombrero:

Just brought this one home yesterday. We really want another FWC, had one 4 years ago and absolutely loved it, we were dumb and sold it, and now it's next to impossible to find one this side of the mississippi. In the interim though we need something, and wanted to have enough time to prep it for our Canada trip in August, so after much debate I emailed the seller of this one, in Ohio(!), and this weekend made the trip to get it. It's an 85 model, but seems super-solid, and though it's well used, everything seems to be in good, serviceable condition. We'll probably add a 12V fridge to replace the icebox, maybe update the lighting, tweak a few things, but overall I think it'll do just fine while we continue the hunt for a FWC Eagle or ATC Bobcat.

Some trip stats: 24 hours, 700 miles, 40 gallons of 87 octane, 5 states, and 1 deer.....:truck: Luckily the uber-bumper took the hit like a champ and spared the truck from damage, but bambi was killed instantly. It looks like it may have cracked a weld, but I won't know til I sand some more of the paint off.

Well, here she is:

Still undecided if I want to add airbags or not. I probably will, especially since it'll have more weight when loaded, but it didn't squat anywhere near as much as I expected it to.

The thing I love most about this style camper is the fact that when closed and parked somewhere, it doesn't stick out as a camper very much at all, just looks like some cooky work truck (other than the fact that it's a Raptor) and doesn't immediately finger you as a "tourist" with a big honkin camper on the back. Good work! Would love to see an interior shot or two just standing at the back door looking in for some perspective.

Hey Clever,

How do you like the awning off the back of the camper? It looks to be a Fiamma? Your camper is a Fleet correct, I wonder what I could find to fit an Eagle?

NothingClever
06-20-2011, 04:21 AM
Hi Nathaneal :bike_rider:,

The awning is great and yes, it's a Fiamma F35 Pro 1.8m model (the case is 71.5" end to end). I bought it for the sun and rain of Florida (upcoming move) where I know we won't surive without it. We didn't use the awning on this trip in Colorado since the sunshine in the morning was welcomed to scrub off the night's frost.

On a user-friendliness note, it's best deployed with two people but doable with one. I stand on the hitch basket to deploy it while the 4WC top is popped and it would be near impossible for me without it. On a separate but somewhat related note, that hitch basket makes entry and exit and roof loading a lot easier on a lifted truck. The step stool that 4WC provides (good quality) is simply too short for a lifted truck. You gotta stretch to get in and it's a big drop when exiting. The hitch basket really closes the gap as another step and makes loading/unloading/sorting gear a LOT easier.

Anyways...back on track.

The supplied Fiamma brackets (which are mounted to the vehicle and the feet of the awning's support legs fit into) weren't a clean mount to the FWC so I improvised and simply screwed some hooks into the wooden 'eaves' of the Fleet. The Fiamma feet (at the ends of the support legs) have holes in them and I just hook the feet to the hooks on the camper. Not a final solution but a good 'nuff to get goin' one.

Suffering a bit from OCD, I chose to go with the Fiamma awning in order to color match the F45 that came on the Fleet from FWC.

If you order your FWC shell without an awning, you might want to check out Carefree of Colorado. They'll have (or fabricate) the right size for the Eagle and will be less expensive but high quality. Maybe not as jazzy and sexy as an Italian Fiamma but fully functional just the same.

Hope that helps :) .

Those little trucks saw great service in the UK, in combination with the Island Plastics Romahome, a demountable two berth camper.

http://i28.tinypic.com/fx5ieh.jpg

Surprisingly, they started off on the 360cc Honda Acty, then the Bedford, Suzuki and Daihatsu's. The camper module could be left, freestanding, though the majority remained affixed to their base vehicles till that unit was replaced.

These camper's have a tremendous following here.

That Four Wheel Camper looks kinda neat on that wee truck, though no one will be getting a speeding ticket anytime soon. http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv29/helixpteron/happy0054.gif

Here's my rig. I got my FWC Hawk in July 2010. Since then it's been a blast with trips to Death Valley (hey Sunni), East Side of the Sierra, Mendocino coast kayaking, Tour of central Nevada, and lot's of shorter trips.

I added Ride-Rites and a sway bar to help control the camper when bashing about, plus Bilstein 5100's all around. The truck came with 18" wheels to which I added BFG AT's. Mileage ain't great at 13mpg, but it's a capable package to go many places.

With sink, 3-way fridge and furnace we're comfy. I will be adding a Wave 3 before fall, in addition to blower furnace. Both can be complimentary I believe. Other mods are gas can holder in the back, home-made arctic pak, lifters for the top, (soon to be) Bike tights to the rear for vertical mount of two mtn bikes. Some LED's have been installed plus new PM-1 group 31 house battery w/ smart Iota charger to keep electrical up to snuff.

Nice setup Pat. Obviously with portal axles you don't take your 4WD'ing very seriously :)

TrayOns are great things and very much the inspiration for my build. I've talked to the owner a few times at some shows and he's a great guy. The dual cab version was a little big in my opinion and hung over the back too far. Trying to get a 'caravan' interior in a dual cab tray is a big ask. Single cab looks great on the back of your Patrol though.

Another option from over here is the Carry Me Camper from Candy Canvas. Great tent and a nice simple box. http://www.candycanvas.com.au/SingleCab.php

There's lots of custom manufacturers building slide on campers like this about the place. I nearly went down the route of increasing the size of my box and putting a Mr Swagman RTT http://www.mrswagman.com.au/rooftoptents/introduction.shtml on it but I really didn't want anything above roof height for ecomony reasons.

Good looking rig!

Do you have a platform built for standing on the roof, or were you just tiptoeing up there?

^^ That rig is the coolest Nissan based overlanding rig by far. I love the front bumper, simple and clean.

Hello everybody, im new here to the portal. Here are a few pics of my rig.

Nice...I have been wondering what a "few" extra inches off a short bed tacoma would look like...I am not thinking of going with a camper quite as long as yours but it doesn't look as unwieldy as I thought it would...

I just uploaded 72 photos. I'm sorry that the quality and background etc. is not perfect,
but there was no time for nice arrangements and so on.

Spare tire is located in the front-top section of the camper.

>> here you see where it's located (http://www.actioncamper.com/event_ent.php?evid=6&kn=AG&lng=en) ... and of course it's in a vinyl, smell tight cover, leaving enough space inside the rime to carry tire fix kit, compressor etc.. The calculated tire was a 35/12.5 17" Cooper Discoverer SST Mud Terrain from my Rubicon. Sizes bigger than that will be very rare for overlanding, I guess. But a bigger tire cover and a smaller matress can be made if desired.

I love to play with my Rubicon when I have my spare on the tailgate, but I believe overlanding is a different story where everything is done a little bit more thoughtfully. For instance: last winter I spend five weeks in Libya, partially driving on very sharp lava rocks. I hade not one tire problem even though I run my tires with Staun Bead Lock inner tires with flat run functunallity. In our group I had the tires with the best backup feature and still took the most care. Others had several tire damages. One can decide if tire changing is fun or not. I don't think so.

Thank you! The pics are mostly from the Bishop area - Buttermilk Hills and the lake Sabrina area. On the way home I stopped in Alabama Hills and snapped one shot.

Yes, it's a Nissan Titan 1/2 ton, but it carries the camper very well, after air bags and sway bar were installed.
