View Full Version : Scepter MFC Group Buy

SC-Surfer

I have put together a group buy for the Scepter MFC fuel cans. New stock, in OD green, as well as water cans and accessories.

Originally discussed here: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39541

If you follow the thread, I had issues with my first vendor, and closed out the thread. I have a new vendor here in the US, and I sent email out to all those who initially showed interest. I had planned to limit the buy in to only those individuals. However, the actual totals ordered are a little less than the initial interest shown so I have room for about 30 more cans on the pallet.

I am still taking orders for MFC cans, MWC water cans, spouts, and Viton gaskets. The order goes in to the vendor on Monday the 19th.

MFC: $50
MWC:$40
Spout: $30
Gaskets: $10

If interested, PM me for details on how to buy in.

What is your expected turn around time ?

I am interested in one water and one gas.

Are they all OD ?

Yeah, I'm interested in a spout. Curious too how long the turn around time is.

Interested ... mostly a lurker here, but am quite active on The New X (www.thexterra.org ... 2nd Gen Site).

How would final shipping work out ... you'd break up the pallet and ship out to each of the GB participants? I'm assuming we'd be responsible for that shipping cost, then right?

Edit: Just read through your initial post in the other thread ... makes sense on the shipping. I have to check tonight, I'll let you know (e-mail to the address posted in the other thread and/or PM) tonight where I stand.

Black is diesel, grey is the special petrol and they come with the diesel gasket.

He posted an update on the original purchase site. Check it out.

Copied from the site:
5/4/10 Update.

Ok, so here’s the current status... I got back from 4 days on the road to find an email from the supplier stating that since I’m a new account I need to verify that I’m doing business in a non CARB state. I turned around, and drove to Nevada and purchased a local business license. Per my conversation with the sales team, that will suffice. I’m told that they sell these to non-CARB states under an exemption form the EPA, and they are audited annually. How the EPA is in bed with CARB is still unclear to me. Anyway...been to Reno and back...Business license purchased and sent off.

On the up side I’m now pretty much fully legit to buy these things...down side, I wasn’t planning on ever doing it again. It’s been a lot of hoops and documentation to deal with. Seems that buying some plastic containers is more difficult than buying contraband on the black market. I love my country, but sometimes I wonder how we got so far off track...but I digress.

Thanks for being patient...I want my order as bad as you all do! I’ll post shipping info as soon as I have it.

That's screwed up. Those Commie bastards in CARB sure know how to get their hands around the throat of free America. :Wow1:

Thanks for the update.

Only problem I see here....

...is that now he is buying a pallet of highly-regulated, EPA-restricted items AS A BUSINESS and distributing them to everyone on the list regardless of their eligibality. Now HE will be "on the hook" as a business to the EPA (who enjoy handing out large fines to non-compliant businesses).

I might feel a bit safer doing this as an individual. I don't think I'd risk an enormous fine by using a business license to purchase these, but that's just me. Ever wonder why you can't find even a tiny business willing to sell these cans any more? They don't want to risk a huge fine.

...Just playing devil's advocate here...

SC-Surfer

Yup, CARB sucks, and Yup, I'm on the hook as a business....sort of. This ain't my first rodeo... I'm not as exposed as it sounds. Thing is, I'm a good American, if I felt for a minute that I was violating the spirit of American law, I'd not bother, but this is a law that restricts some of us from owning a product others are allowed to own. A completely harmless product no less. Nuff said.
To those of you who are in on this round, thanks for waiting. To everyone who missed out, sorry. Maybe I'll do it again. Not sure yet.

Before you go that route, the gentleman on AR15.com was $5/each and local gasket companies can make them for approx. that price as well. For Utah locals Pioneer Gasket can and has made them in Viton.

OVRLND

Steve,

Grey gaskets are for gasoline.
Black (Viton) gaskets are for diesel, gasoline and *other* fuels. They are the more expensive of the gaskets.

Steve Curren
06-22-2010, 07:45 PM
So the black are for any fuel and the grey is for only gasoline..
Thanks, I found a grey one in the garage.

cruiseroutfit
06-23-2010, 01:20 AM
Not so fast. Viton's can have a more grey appearance than the black rubber. Comparing OE Scepter gaskets in my cans, the Vition is in fact 'light black' whereas my rubbers are just plan black.

Rubber should not be used with gasoline and can cause the cap flange to crack and make removing the cap difficult. I don't know if the viton has any issue with diesel or not but given the fact Scepter specs rubber for the diesel I suspect there is some reason? Could be cost alone?

VanGo
06-23-2010, 01:41 AM
Another ident is the yellow "slash" mark on the side of the rubber diesel gasket. This is typical with military issue (as in never changed out from vendor) and can help answer the question of the material used in the gasket. Follow Kurt's advise, and if unsure, take the time to post up a pic of what you are working with, these cans and accessories are VERY hard to source and a blown flange can be a costly/untimely demise.

Steve Curren
06-23-2010, 02:09 AM
Kornfused, I have black ones on my original Scepter gasoline cans. I also found two greyish gaskets that I got from where I don't know. Am I correct in thinking that the grey looking ones are the ones I want? Also I appreciate your sending the info for the gaskets but I could not open it, I also e-mailed the man Tom in Pa asking if he still makes gaskets.
Sure is a hassle finding gaskets..
Thanks to everyone...

I too ordered two MFC's and told Monte I would head down to pick them up, as I live up the road in the Bay Area. Was out of town with work, sent an email, paid the shipping and he said he would send them following a bout with an illness. Now, radio silence. I hope this is just a busy work thing, a real deal illness, or a family dealio--but have any of you other guys heard from him regarding no shipped MFC's or gaskets. Always optimistic! Thanks!

He has a history of this less than desirable behavior on other forums as well. I found at least four email addresses he was associated with and sent a plea to do the right thing to all of them--no luck. The Pay Pal dispute resolution process is a joke. He has subsequently gone incommunicado and my desire to track his sorry self down in Santa Cruz is overcome by common sense and just chalking this up to a learning experience. He is now sporting a big dent in his karma. So, those of you who got your cans, don't say good things. An man who is only an occasional thief is not worthy of a supportive post.

I reluctantly give SC surfer the benefit of the doubt for now, but it's tough. It has, after all, been more than a month since the cans have been received by others. And I see a similar history in the sticker debacle on the other board. I don't have any of my hard earned money tied up in this group buy, but I was the one who told him where to get the cans here in the USA, so I'll feel pretty bad if people get shafted.

Hopefully everyone used their credit card to purchase the cans through PayPal, so you can just go to your credit card company and have the charges rescinded. I think there is a time limit for doing this though, so you'd all better check!

SO, I gotta ask, not to give anyone a bad time, but because I am generally uninformed on the subject.

Person A, can take Person B to court (and presumably hope to win) because person A paid for an ILLEGAL good and person B did not provide said ILLEGAL goods? SO basicaly what you are saying is I could sue a hooker (in Ca) for not providing a service I paid for, or I could sue the local Cocain dealer for not providing me with the powder I paid for?

I know the court system is a joke from time to time but has it really gotten that bad?

AGAIN, I am not trying to start anything. I really just would like to know if this is indeed true in the states. I am also not saying that owning an illigal gas can is anywhere NEAR as bad as the other referances I used. Heck, I own 9 Scepters as well, and fully believe (and hope one day again) they should be legal.

This really is just a question about sueing or taking legal action agaisnt someone for not providing an illegal product/service.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Josh

I am not aware that a gasket for a gas can is illegal. Also the can that is being spoken about is not illegal in Arizona or other states, just some states. I just bought parts and another Scepter can from a dealer. What is being talked about is the failure of Monte to even respond to people he owes money or items to. I for one would most likely be satisfied if he would just man up and tell people what is going on and hopefully things could be worked out. Seems like Monte has priors for actions similar and he should stop.

I was speaking for the can itself, not the gaskets. I should have been more clear.

As for them being legal to buy in some states, I was completely unaware of this. It was my impression that had been outlawed to purchase in the states, not just some of them. Thanks for the info, guess I should have researched more.

I realize what was done by the person who took $$ and didn't deliver is defiantly wrong, and I wasn't questioning that. I was just wondering about pursuing a legal action for a purchase of an illegal (wrongly assumed in this case) item.

Thanks for clearing me up on the cans. I need to go to Arizona now. :smiley_drive:

So, in my continuing quest to find out where Monte and my very paid for MFC's had gone, I had sent emails to every email address I could find which resolved to the wayward Mr. McDonald. Today I received an avalanche of the below responses from one address. Did anybody else who had reached out to Monte get these? I just want my MFC's!

Autoreply...

Thanks for your order email or order.

If this email is regarding a question I'll get back to you in a day or so.

Thanks!

I got the same thing. I wonder if he was having computer problems?

In his profile, under "statistics" it says last activity was 8-16-10.
That means he logged in on that date right?

Edit- Hey check this out- http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1367358451

It's a facebook page for monte mcdonald. I'm not saying this is the OP in this thread, but the FB page and his stats on expo both say he's from santa cruz, has a VW syncro and is a member of the San Francisco paramedic association. Maybe too coincidental?

Wow, too bad to hear. I picked up my cans from his house a week or two after the shipment came in. I did see the whole (or at least most of it) shipment in his yard too. He surely didn't seem like the type that would take off and run, but you never know. I never recieved my gaskets either. It just seems odd since he was forth coming with his personal info (address, phone number, etc) for pick-up. Something must have happened to him.

Sorry to hear of the issues with the group buy, but good to find out about DSTactical. Going to order a nozzle and a few gaskets for the three cans I picked up locally.

I have sold a few diesel scepter cans and the guys that I have sold them to are getting gaskets from this guy:

Tom musselman
asitom@atlanticbbn.net

I think he charges 4.50 each shipped to your door.(Don't quote me on this)

Cheers

I don't think Mr. McDonald is at this address anymore. I went there and was told that he now lives on 26th Ave. I drove down 26th but was unable to locate his residence. He allegedly lives near the beach (on 26th). Maybe somebody in Santa Cruz can track him down. I spoke to the Santa Cruz police department and they will handle this when the charges are filed.

It still burns me that I got ripped off when I tired to buy two MFC's from Monte McDonald. It was my first ExPo group buy and left a bitter taste. Did anybody ever track this cat down or get any satisfaction via a court of law? I had done some public record research to see where this guy might be, but I never really found an updated address. He is probably living off the grid with all those fraudulently obtained fuel cans. :)

Did anyone file charges? If that Facebook link is him, then he is not too hard to track down.
