I was talking to a friend who's a taco owner/nut about the newer trucks and an '05 in town I was looking at. He said that the '05's are known for blowing rearends with the e-locker. Was this isolated to a certain range of build dates or fixed for the 06 model year/should 05's with the trd locker be avoided like the plague?

There is a long discussion on this topic at TTORA: http://ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35345

Actually it was the list there that led me to inquire here. I was really enticed by the idea of having a factory installed locker so there'd be no warranty related issues down the road with the addition of an ARB, nor the hassle/headache. But after seeing this I'm not really sure.

It looks as though all the cases were linked to a bad batch of gears on some of the early 05 models. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a 06 or 07 with a rear locker.

I have an early model and blew up the R&P at the 06 Trophy. I have had 0 issues with the new gears.

Does it appear to be isolated to only the early 05's or is it widespread?

There are no reported cases for the 06 or 07's, even on the early 05's the problem was not very widespread.
