Add shackles to ARB

I seen one truck (a Tundra with an ARB Sahara bar) that has added shackles to the front of the ARB bumper. My only dislike with the ARB for my 2009 Tacoma is that there are no shackles. Where are you guys attaching the winch hook if using a snatch block to double back to the rig? What about if you need to attach a snatch strap?

For those of you that have added shackles, did you add a piece of plate behind the bumper to reinforce the bolts and disperse the stress when hooked up to the shackle? How are the shackle attachments holding up after repeated uses? The factory recovery point on the front is still in place but it is located quite low on the truck, and could very well be inaccessible in the truck was stuck.

I don't have an ARB but what about the Tacoma's front tow hooks?

I can attach a tow strap to my shackles, I modified mine where the nut is, I removed the nut and drill a hole for a quick release pin. Pull the pin and remove the bolt ect ect. I also have a 1\2 plate for backing.

I was thinking of doing some mod similar to your shackle mount.

All the new ARB bars are designed to work with the factory air bag systems and are designed to utilize the factory recovery points. If you add a new point to the bar, and pull from the side or other weird angles, you may damage the crush cans which may not allow the airbag system to deploy when it needs too.

Pulling from the side may still mess with the impact areas on the new bumpers, but I'm pretty sure the airbag system has nothing to do with the bumper...it's an accelerometer inside the engine compartment.

You are correct, however, the ARB bumper as well as factory bumpers are designed to absorb some of the impact before the airbag system goes off. This prevents premature airbag activation. Without a crush system, the airbag sensors would detect deceleration more abruptly causing them to go off with just the slightest impact.

x2. In the grand scheme bumpers definitely do have something to do with the deployment of an airbag.

There are some pictures of the gen 1 Tacoma ARB crush cans that I've posted here on ExPo somewhere. It really shows you the engineering that goes into an air bag equipped vehicle, particularly the fact it allows for winching too.
