Notice: Date has changed to April 28-29
Wanted: Bikers and drivers to make a small dedicated team who will bike/drive approximately 15 miles from Empire Ranch to a camp just within the Coronado National Forest boundary. The route passes through Las Cienegas Conservation Area – just north of Sonoita, Arizona - where we’ll see awesome native grasslands, distant mountains, several streams and perennial waters, and we’ll pass through riparian corridors and an impressive canyon. The Conservation Area is a high desert (4000 feet, give or take), so we’ll still be around mesquite, prickly pear, and others. We may have the chance to witness several types of big game, such as pronghorn antelope, white-tailed deer, javelina, and possibly mountain lion. Be prepared for broad vistas, clear skies, clean air, and quiet.
Other points of interest are Empire Ranch (a few Western movies were shot here, and it has several intact buildings to explore), and Ramsey Well – an old Fluid Drive is rusting away here. It’s going to be cool.
What I need are some partners. If you aren’t into unmotorized biking, don’t worry about it. We need a support team driving the vehicles - see the map I attached. We’ll drive to Empire Ranch, explore that for a while, and split into two teams. One will drive ahead to the campsite (coordinates forthcoming), and remain in contact with the biking team via 2-meter radios. The route is mainly an un-maintained dirt road that’s rarely traveled. I’ve driven the route twice, and it does have several good hills to peddle up and coast down. From Empire Ranch to camp will be approximately 15 miles.
Due to the size of the camp area I have in mind, we'll have to limit this to 7-8 vehicles. If I can manage to get some of you on a bike for the ride-a-long, this will be extra fun.
Who's interested? I'm definitely biking this, while Brooke will be driving our Frontier. She's going to be 6 months into the pregnancy at that time.

To far ahead for me to make reliable plans, but I might be interested in the 2-wheeled part of the trip. It has been a long times since I stepped over my campus beater....so we'll see if I manage to get my out of shape *** on it to prepare....
If you need a driver, let me know. I don't have a bike, but would love to help out.

I'm going to be in Park City Utah till the 20th. Was considering heading down to Moab for my annual pilgrimage to bike. Roughly how many hours from Moab would you say this is? I've only been in northern AZ around the Grand Canyon, so any excuse to see some new territory would be cool in my book.

At least 6 hours. Can anyone else confirm or discredit my claim?
Now, we need to discuss the assortments of beer we're going to need . . .

Hey Mark are our cars going to be safe left at Empire Ranch?
Mark,
I'd love to go. Can I put a Maybe down?! I'd love to head down there and do this ride. Maybe I'll even get a chance to hit up fantasy island or 50 year while I'm down there. Tucson has all the good trails!! :clapsmile

Hey Mark are our cars going to be safe left at Empire Ranch?
Certainly. However, if you're not into it when we get there, we'll work it out. If nothing else, you can just pedal your worried *** back to your truck at the end of the day while the rest of us eat, drink, and act foolish 'round the campfire. ;) OR we can send a crew in a truck to retrieve the trucks.....depends on what we get for drivers and stuff.
For instance: McVickers is biking, so if he ropes someone into driving his Disco to camp that would be ideal. (just an example)
We might be re-arranging things at the last minute. Erin says he's definitely into being a driver, which rocks. Brooke, as it turns out, can't make it that weekend. So, I'm trying to find a driver for my truck and I think my brother will be into doing that. So, Seth, you and I could carpool and not worry about leaving your (or my) truck at the ranch. But it won't be a big deal to park a vehicle there.
At this point, though, we can toss everything into Erin's truck (tents, cooking gear, and all that). Those of us biking can take day packs and not have to lug everything along.

Ha ha, I'd love to, but the 944 is pretty much a track car only these days. No AC, no interior other then two seats. Its pretty loud, hot and uncomfortable on the highway. When I first got the car back in '95 though it made a few trips out through the Moab area. I've got a great shot of it somewhere up on the slickrock that is pretty funny, no pavement in sight. I don't think I could handle the 5,000 mile round trip in it as it sits now though. :smiley_drive:
I know what you mean. I think we have the same disease. I modded my old tacoma to the point that it was hell to drive on the highway and great offroad once you got there! Kinda pointless, but thats the disease!

So true! I think I'm finally coming to my senses and realize that I don't need to take every car to the extreme to optimize things at the expense of practicality. Some day I hope to have something like a slightly tuned WRX that will be practical and competent. Older and wiser.:p
thats what I tell myself too! Now I have a 4runner that is resisting being modded and my other car would be an old porsche or a subie! (once I can afford it. For now I'll just get an old triumph motorcycle)
Great minds! :friday:
Ummmm...........am I going to have to rent a trailer??

Fair enough. "Maybes" don't get put down. They might get made fun of, but they don't get put down. :) I hope you make it.
Some might find this enticing. I found this interesting page with 360 degree views of Empire Ranch. It's pretty sweet:

Also - I've updated the first post with participants. I'm going to work on getting a sponsor or two as well for some simple things like t-shirts, give this thing a little bit of officiality. Those of you who tell me "maybe" get listed as "definite" just as a suggestive measure :)

Attention fellas --- conflict with the original dates. I'm moving this back one week to the 28th and 29th. The good news is that Brooke will be able to make this one now. She'll be driving our Frontier. :safari-rig:
I talked with McVickers and he said he's likely out anyway.
Seth is still in, which rocks. Erin, Aaron - how does this sit with you fellas?
Is there such a thing as a mod who is NOT on their way to the big bad Arctic Ocean right now? If so, I beg for an amendment to the title of this thread for the new date.

Yes, there are several. But most of us do not have the permissions to edit outside of the areas we tend to. IIRC, Jonathon Hanson is still in town (more or less), and I believe he has all the authority needed to fix the title for you. You might want to send him a PM, I don't know if he is following this thread or not.

I highly recommend FlyingWil for all of your moderator and edit needs. His truck is in Texas and his wife is preggers. That Wil ain't Flying anywhere for awhile. I hear he's working on mods for his 3 hole punch.
But as far as moderators go, Wil = 5 stars and a lot of stroke. Including the ability to clean up your mess. :shakin:

The date change will work for me, but I do not have Elle that weekend, and she will be highly disappointed that she will not get to go camping. Good enough for me! If two wrongs don't make a right, I'd say that three maybes/mights make a YES. Talk to the family, get 'em on board. That would be cool.
I do believe that late April should be very nice out there for photography.

Let's get this thing rolling again. I haven't hopped on my bike for about 4 or 5 weeks, so I biked in to work today. I'll attempt to do so twice a week.
From this page (http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/features/saddlecomfort.shtml):
Numb genitals, burning pain in your crotch, bruised buttocks, saddle sores and raw, inflamed skin are some of the common problems cyclists have with their saddles.
That's a fancy way of saying, "Biking makes your crotch hurt." So I have some clever shorts with a padded saddle that look like this on the outside:
http://www.markdstephens.com/images/saddle_2.jpg
but like this on the inside:
http://www.markdstephens.com/images/saddle_1.jpg
So, if that doesn't excite you, perhaps this does:
Brooke and her sister will be driving our truck, and they will set up a tasty Saturday night meal. YUM YUMS. We'll have us a fun little fiesta in the mountains outside of Sonoita, Arizona that night. :camping:
My idea for those who want to drive is that they can cruise around to explore any of the open roads in the area or what ever. We'll meet at the campsite, and within the next couple of weeks, I'll provide a Mapsource or text file with the route to upload into your GPS unit (if you'd like one).
Again the new date for this trip is April 28-29, 2007
I have updated the first post with the list of people. If you want your name on that list, say the word.

What route are you guys and gals doing down there? Inter-connecting/looping the 900 series roads?
And where are you camping? As a word of warning, don't camp to close to the old airstrip, it tends to get over run with quaders.
... And when you pass Rosemont Junction on the East side, heading South on 83....take a long hard look, it wont be like that for very long, there is a proposed OPEN pit mine going in there. :(
I don't know if you will have time, but, there is some decent single track on the East side of 83 in Gardner Canyon.

Erin, I'm not planning on camping on Friday. We're going to leave Phoenix area to get to Tucson by 8:00-8:30, meet at your favorite strip bar or whatever . . . suggestions? Seth, that means you need to drink a little lighter on Friday. :violent-smiley-031:

HA! LOL. Okay, this time I p-r-o-m-i-s-e this road is much tamer than that last one. But we're going to have enough truck-like things that you could toss your excess gear into any of those. If you're able to carry it all on the bike, I believe we'll test out a new nickname for you, too: Saddlebags.

And of course, since I am trying to figure out how to camp off of the bike, it would be kinda like cheating if I tossed excess gear in a truck...buuuttttt.....since there will be extra room available, maybe I'll talk someone into carrying an extra 6-pack for me...

The old airstrip is on your map, the little green square just below Empire Ranch. I was talking to a ranger the last time I was down there. He said the weekends were nuts with the kawds. Maybe they remedied that since last I was there.
The mine, a Canadian company owns that land just by Rosemont Junction, appartently they found a new way to extract copper. Last I heard there is a big push to keep that from happening.
Brian, that is a good place to test the bike and equipment. I think from Articulate's map, the route is a fairly easy graded road. I don't see them on his map, but, road 901 and 902 (I have dig out my maps to make sure of the numbers) head north, are a bit more challeging. Lots of baby head rocks, wash outs, sand, etc...
Edit: my maps don't go detailed enough to show the 900 series roads. They are there though, I know the area by heart, but can't recall which roads go where..I have to be on the road to tell you. I think 901 goes to an old cabin North of the ranch, which you link up powerline roads and gas line roads to end up by the air strip.
I like to run that route from Corona de Tucson, to Gardner Canyon, then Sonoita, jump on 82 east, then pick up road 910 (?11) North to the Ranch, then through a bunch of off shoots in there, then back home. A good 90-100 mile round trip.
Little report on the last run I did down there. http://www.arizonatrailtalk.com/cgi/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1159201631

But I have changed my plans slightly. I think I will bring the jeep and the mongeral. I need to work a bit on my photography skilz (or lack there of). The jeep will offer a better platform to work from.
TTT is fine with me, as good a place as any to launch from, plus top off on fuel.

I have not been posting up very often lately but I am still planning on this trip. I will do it on bike and I have a dual band HT radio.
Only factors in my way as of now are
1- need to make sure grandparents can watch the kids on Saturday
2- Need to check my bike, my air/oil shocks had a bit of a puddle under them when I looked the other day -- that can't be good!
Also, would it be possible for my bike and I to hitch a ride to tucson with a vehicle from Phoenix?

Hey Mark, so do you want us to bring anything for this feast?

Yeah, you need to get your ... uh ... crotch "broken in." :) I'm feeling rock solid these days. I've been riding to work twice a week, and it's 20 miles one way.
Thanks for the offers on the feast, fellas. Truthfully, I haven't planned the meal but Brooke and I discussed making fajitas. Making some some yummy pico de gallo, too. If you happen to be really weird and dislike bell peppers and onions say your peace. Peppers with a kick - like jalepenos - we'll leave on the side. Cool?
Just bring your own drinks.
Aaron - sorry to hear you can't make it. I was looking forward to hanging with you again.
We need to keep our fingers crossed for Jeff, because I think he said he was going to do a "practice camp" with his kids this weekend to cozy them up for our trip. Still haven't heard from McVickers if his front shocks are okay.

Care to have a gps file? I hope I don't regret doing this, but here is our route in three formats in case you don't have a Garmin: here (http://www.markdstephens.com/las_cienegas_conservation/biking/)
Brian (GT), what's your steed? Crawl toy or dual sport? Will you have a HAM radio? I've got a handheld as donated by a buddy to bring along with me. FYI.
I think I have a solid count of people, except Jeff hasn't reported back about the trial camping in his yard. Jeff? Your ears on? Status report.
If any of you fellas plan on bringing a date, mention it here so I can plan well for the food.

We're going to try ... this will be an adventure and I'm excited. I have a HAM, no license as of yet, but can monitor the correct frequency (146.520 by chance?). I plan to meet for breakfast at the TTT, then go get the family and dog and wander down for mid-day arrival (noon to 2). Does the GPS route have our camping spot?
The closest we came to the trial was a sleeping bag in the bed, but hey, we gotta start somewhere, right?
If you're stoked, I'm stoked. :truck:

OK, I have an older version of MapSource and cannot read either of the files. Any chance you can save it to be compatible with version 3? And/or can you give me the campsite waypoint ... I can at least figure some of the stuff out from there.

I'm planning on bringing the jeep. I just don't have the bike thing worked out yet...No 2 meter, no GPS, no laptop, no photo gear storage, no cooler for the beer, no room for my travel partner....so I'll bring the jeep which has all of the above.
I may have to pull the same trick as Jeff--meet for breakfast, then return home to wrap up a few things, and head out later in the day. Time off is at a premium right now....and I am running about 3 weeks behind on my projects at home. Every hour counts.
I would like the route info that the riders are using though. There are a couple of photo's I would like to [try to] capture, so I will meet you guys on the trail somewhere along the way.

How about the TXT file? You should be able to open that with Mapsource, too.
Otherwise, camp neighborhood is here: N31 46.464 W110 27.819 It's just barely inside the National Forest boundary near a place called Bear Spring. A really cool place nearby is Ramsey Well.
I'm stoked to see that you're still coming. We can get up close and personal with that 4Runner and the "new" tires. You and the family making it?

Ah! Cool. The route in those files is the pedal route. :bigbossHL:
The area has a web of roads, so I anticipated the driving crew to be exploring side roads and taking their time, or doing whatever makes them merry. As long as the beer is cold and plentiful, do what you will. Come take some photos, that would be sweet.
Notice, too, that the camp can be approached from Highway 82.

No idea, that freq just seems to be one people use. Don't know why. I'm so new to this HAM stuff, maybe I should stick with bacon. yum, bacon.
Don't know why the files won't work either. I've never played with MapSource but I plugged in the coordinates and there are a few ways in. You guys are taking off from Empire Ranch on bikes, si? Or are you heading in off of 82? Or ar eyou being dropped off, then the drivers are heading in off 82?

That is the national simplex calling frequency according to the band plan. It's sort of analogous to CH 19 on the CB, it's the one people use to make contact, then they go to another frequency. I'd suggest using another frequency.

For an EXPEDITION website . . . never mind, I'll keep that comment to myself ;)
I might have time tomorrow to move all 5 MILLION of them. :mixed-smiley-030:
Perhaps I'm "Sofa King Re Todd Did". The route tool does make an anchor point with every click, but I wanted an accurate route. When I created it, it didn't actually list those 5 MILLION as "official" waypoints. Don't tell the guys at JPFreek about this, cuz I just wrote an article about GPS use . . . :bigbossHL: How about an Expedition Trophy class, or um...symposium, on mapping and GPS software???
My plan is to embark by pedal from Empire Ranch, follow the road east/ne to Mattie Canyon (powerlines are in the canyon). The canyon is cool. Climb out towards Ramsey Well and on to camp. I figured those driving would take the same route, and leave before those of us pedaling - EWW icky dust.
BTW: I told Brooke that my waypoint for camp is precisely where we camped before, but if she finds a better location before getting there to take it.
2M frequency shall be the infamous "Party Channel" 146.460 This is to avoid confusion, chaos and mayhem that Jeff likes to start :). Thanks Chuck. Brooke is not licensed either, and since I won't be in the truck to be "in control of my station," she won't be able to transmit unless there's an emergency. SO! If you roll in from Hwy 82, and no one is at the campsite marked, just follow the road westward toward Ramsey Well. I'll have a handheld on me too, so we should be able to communicate very well.

Have fun out there this weekend fellas. If only I were in AZ...
Get this, from weather.com for Sonoita, AZ:
A mix of clouds and sun with the chance of an isolated thunderstorm in the afternoon. High 77F. Winds ESE at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 30%.
I'm still going, but we may be dealing with some cruddy weather. As usual, it only rains on the weekends. :) Then again, a short t-storm in the afternoon will be kind of fun. If we get started pedaling at 10:00 or 10:30, we'll be done by 2:00 including some diversions and a slow pace.
least it will cool things off, it is pretty warm here today.

Looks like these folks got a few showers today. Didn't look like anything too heavy but there was a lot of lightning this afternoon. Here's a shot looking south from Tucson of a lightning caused fire burning in the Santa Rita mountains. This is at least 30 miles NW from where they are camped so no worries but I bet they can see this burning from thier campsite. It looks like it may be on the ridges above Gardner canyon.

You guys rule. Check out those photos!
While riding, we had 2 or 3 moments of sprinkles but mostly a wind that seemed to blow from hell itself. Sand and dust blasts to the face. A handheld 2m radio is pretty worthless in the wind. The camp at Ramsey Well cut off a few miles of our ride at 12.8 total.
It's a pretty area don't you think? If you recall this morning where we went left at a fork in the trail, the right fork makes a broad loop north and then back to that main road. I believe it's rougher. It goes to some place called Apache Springs, so I presume there is some water up there. Then again, Las Cienegas translates to "wetlands." Cienega Creek runs all year long.
Thanks for coming out fellas. I hope you had fun despite the crud weather. I wasn't in charge of that part.
I'll post a few photos in a couple of days.

I believe this is the fork I took initially. It is indeed rougher. Is this the trail that comes back into the main road just before the ranch? I was curious where it went, so I followed it a mile or so before returning to the main road and catching up with the rest of the group.
It was a fun trip. Cherokee is wiped out. Still sleeping (after her bath).
