NOTE: CLOSED PLANNING THREAD. VIEW TRIP REPORT HERE (http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=13315#post13315)
I consider this more of "Expedition Lite", but a true adventure none the less. This is as remote as you can get in the 48 states, and the total trail is over 150 miles.
I have driven this trail twice, but both times were a little rushed, so I want to take my time and explore a bit.
Thursday Night: Motel in Yuma, dinner with the group.
Friday: Leave for Tinajas Altas, drive Cipriano Pass, and we will camp in proximity of the Tinajas Altas Mountains
Saturday: Drive along the Cabeza Prieta Mountains and have lunch at Tule Well. From there we will cross the Pinacate Lava Flow and camp near Papago Well
Sunday: Up early, and drive into the Organ Pipe National Monument, stopping at Bates well for lunch. On the road by 2:00 in Ajo.

TRIP DETAILS:
Thursday Night, Feb 23rd:
Meet in Yuma. I will be driving from So. Cal., and the great thing is that my dad will be along. It will be the first trip I have done with my father, so it is pretty exciting.
I will be arriving around 5:00 PM, and will be checking into the:
Fairfield Inn Yuma
1801 S. Sunridge Dr.
Yuma, AZ 85365
(928) 345-1800
For some reason, there is a run on rooms in Yuma that night, so rates are a little high. :(
We can do an informal group dinner at 7:00 pm at:
Bella Vista Italian
2755 S 4th Avenue
Yuma, AZ 85364
520.344.3989
Thursday evening alternate group: Chris (BajaTaco) will be meeting up with several people from Arizona at the I-8/Wellton exit #30 on the south side of the interstate at 5:30 PM MST (AZ time). After meeting, we will head in a west/sw direction and find a suitable place to bivouac for the evening. Chris will be monitoring the CB and 2M radios until all scheduled parties arrive at camp. The camp group will depart no later than 9:30 a.m. MST on Friday, so we can meet up with the other group at exit #14 (Fortuna Mine Rd.) at 10:30 am. It is important to note that anyone who decides to camp here will probably want to have their CDD permit in hand. Otherwise you will need to leave early on Friday morning, to allow time to get into Yuma and visit the military office to obtain a permit.
Friday Morning:
8:30 am SHARP, we will leave the Fairfield Inn Parking Lot and travel to the Marine Base to allow those who have not obtained a permit to get theirs. The office opens at 9:00 am. Their number is 928 269 7150.
Range Permits, 3980 Ave 3 East, Yuma, AZ 85365
Meet at 10:30 am at exit 14 off of I8
From the exit, we will drive the Fortuna Mine Trail and link back up with the Tinajas Altas Pass. A short detour to Cipriano is also scheduled and the final drive through the Tinajas Altas and on to our first camp near the tanks.
Saturday:
Leave at 9:30, which will allow great images from the rising sun and some morning exploration of the Tinajas. Make way to Tule well and the Pinacate Lava Flow. We will camp at or near Papago Well.
Sunday: Wake early to take advantage of the light, and continue through Cholla Pass and into the Organ Pipe NM. Stop at Bates well. Road conditions improve after Bates Well, and we will make good time into Ajo. I expect we will arrive around 1:00pm.
Remember all times are AZ

I will be going to the AZPLIC located in downtown Phoenix next Friday mid-morning.
If anyone wants to meet up for breakfast and then head over there, let me know.
And if anyone is able to play hookie from work, we can head over to the Sand Expo (http://www.azsandexpo.com/) and Truck Expo (http://www.arizonatruckexpo.com/) at the Arizona State fairgrounds. It was pretty cool last year...
Hey Scott,
Let me know if you get a cancellation. I have been wanting to do this trip for some time. I may even have my Series IIA ready by then.
Cheers,

Been a while since we've done it, and I haven't gone in from that end without stopping first at HQ in Ajo.

I hope you're right Scott - I am doing everything I can to keep it looking like the classic 40 yr old LR it is. But with a new V8, NV4500 5 speed, Disc Brake conversion and a few other little gimmicks, it should wheel pretty well. :D
Anyway, the Disco's ready even if the Series isn't if you get some room on this trip.

I'm running this trail with a different group in January, if anyone is interested in joining us drop Pskhaat or myself a note.
My specific question is about vehicle selection... I've got a dilemna here, I'm kinda in between trucks as I just bought a 97 FZJ80, but I still have a nicely built 85 FJ60. For comfort reasons I would certainly rather take this trip in the new truck but it will be in unlocked  stock form, other than a sweet TRD Supercharger :gunt: . My question is will there be any obstacles that would behoove me to take the 60 with lockers, winch etc...?
All input will be greatly appreciated.
I'm also looking for any advice on the best way to rationalize to my dear wife getting the 80 lifted, locked, and protected before this adventure.

My recollection from a couple of years ago is the majority of the route does not require 4WD. Any stock high clearance 4WD vehicle should have no problem.
Scott Brady
12-07-2005, 02:34 AM
Stock, high clearance 4wd.
A few arroyos will give you pause. Christmas Pass is a little rocky. Sand is deep in spots.
I think I could drive the whole trail in a RAV4

Permits can be obtained from the Range Management Department Box 99160 Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, AZ 85369-9160 Phone 928-269-2799. I'm planning on getting mine 1st AM on Friday.

Are the permits State land trust - or BLM - ?
Scott Brady
01-17-2006, 01:47 AM
The permits are actually Barry M Goldwater Range Permits. They are a hold harmless permit for entering the range.
Since so many require the permits, I am going to adjust the schedule so that everyone can take care of the permits on Friday morning. Look for more details early next week.

What about the permits for the section through Cabeza Prieta NWR? We need those as well, no?
Scott Brady
01-17-2006, 07:01 PM
Well, thanks to the good doctor (Ed), he researched the permit situation and found that the process is much improved:
"Marine Corps Air Station
HRO Range Permit Office
Box 99104
Yuma, AZ 85369-9104
I sent an e-mail to AZPLIC and they in turn directed me to a website for info on permits for the Barry Goldwater Range:
http://www.luke.af.mil/StaffAgencies/RMO/RMO_visitors.asp
I just spoke with a guy at the Yuma Marine Corps Base. He says we don't have to watch the video any more. It can all be done by mail.
Download the Hold Harmless/Application form from the website, complete it, send that along with a copy of driver's license and a stamped self addresssed envelope to them and they will issue the permit and mail back.
Whew...that's a relief. I was wondering how I would be able to watch the video, etc., and not have to go a day early.
Hope this info is useful!
Ed"

Scott/Chris,
My understanding is they are all the same. My old permit is marked:
BMGR/CPNWR Permit # *******.
According to my old "Information Sheet" from 2003, the permits are issued for entry to the Barry M. Goldwater Range, Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, or The Sand Tanks(formerly Area A).
I also tried to down load your link, but nothing was there.

Chris,
Good question on the NWL permit. I dont know the answer to that. Hopefully I can follow-up next week to find the details.
I'm fairly certain we will need one.
http://www.fws.gov/southwest/refuges/arizona/cabeza.html
"Before entering the refuge, you must obtain a valid Refuge Entry Permit and sign a Military Hold Harmless Agreement. Free permits are available from the refuge office or they can be sent through the mail.
Most of the refuge falls within the air space of the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range. Numerous low-flying aircraft cross the refuge on their way to air-to-air bombing and gunnery ranges located to the north. Some military training exercises over the refuge may require limitations on travel and even short periods of closure of the refuge to the public. Military schedules are known in advance, so refuge staff can help with your schedule."

if you go through the Yuma Marine Corps office for the permit, that will be good for the Goldwater Range as well as Cabeza Prieta; they agreed on a combined permit process in 1998, I think.
Guys, I envy you, we did the trail in 1999 and 2000. A personal favorite. Claudia

My only regret after running the trail 2 weeks ago is that I did not have a tape recorder while receiving the lecture from the guy @ the Marine base who gives out the permits. He had some pretty priceless things to say about what we should and should not do while on the range, some were downright scary, such as what to do if your firearm accidentally gets discharged towards an illegal immigrant.

..lecture from the guy @ the Marine base...about what we should and should not do while on the range, some were downright scary, such as what to do if your firearm accidentally gets discharged towards an illegal immigrant.
Your comment required me to take a few days to process...and I hate to detract from the topic at hand but Eleanor Roosevelt said, "The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!" I'm presuming this guy was a Marine....That is if I'm understanding what you said above.
Should I laugh or throw up at what the U.S. Marine Corps says we should do with the murdered body of a border-running Mexican? Should I laugh or throw up at Government sanctioned "accidental weapon discharge?" I'm a crooked soul if I laugh, and an unpatriotic liberal if I throw up. Forcing me to chose one is what's really downright scary.
To turn a corner, though, what I like most about being outside in wilderness areas and places made of rocks, critters, and creosote is that I can let such labels dissolve away. One time I saw this along El Camino Del Diablo, and I would have been hard pressed to actually discharge a firearm at anybody...and then lie about it.

Al, I am considering the eastern flanks of the Gila Mtns. just east of Telegraph pass. This would be fairly close to Wellton for the start of the trail on Friday morning.

Do you have some basic coordinates for that location?
I may just opt for camping rather than hotel...save the dinero...

Ed, it would be fun to have some company! Here is a marker that is roughly the area I am thinking of, on Topozone (http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=11&n=3616453&e=752574&s=100&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25)

Great plan, Chris!
I thought that looked like a possibility as I was scanning my own maps.
A question, though. The map doesn't look right. It shows I-8 as only a single lane at Telegraph Pass, yet it actually is split, and each double lane winds through the mountains there, actually crossing over one another at one or two places.
It also shows the dirt road leading off directly from the highway, yet I don't recall any such roads that access interstate highways except at interchanges.
How are you planning to get there?

Ed, I agree with what you said. I think we would probably have to exit at Wellton and backtrack towards the hills. We can just kind of play it by ear. Based on this though, we might need to skip the dinner in Yuma so we can use daylight to find a good campsite. What do you think?
Brian, the more the merrier. Did you decide if Oliver will be joining you?

Oh, yeah...I'll skip a city dinner for a camping dinner any day!
If I read my topos right, I'll have to bail at Wellton. The trick appears to be getting over the CAP canals.
Any thoughts on that?

Aha! I see part of the problem with the maps. The Ligurta quadrangle is 1965 data...before the Interstate. So the road shown is actually US 80. The other quadrangles are 1980 or better.
Should be fun!

Yessir - el topo data es muy viejo. It looked to me like there was a bridge over the canal adjacent to the freeway. If you look at Google Earth, there are some bridges that cross the canal. (wait, you are using a Mac, right? Can you look at Google Earth?)

Oliver is still undecided.
I want to bring him but also want to play it safe and limit the number of potential liabilities in such a remote area. I would imagine that most of the stinging and biting critters are dormant this time of year but it sure would suck for him to stick his nose wher it don't belong and get hurt way out there.
Call me a paranoid parent but I
still have to think on it some more!

OK, so last night I had insomnia and Google-Earth'd the possible route to the Thursday campsite...or at least close. The satellite images go "low res" just about at the Gila Mountains.
It looks like there are a lot of new dirt roads in the area that most certainly will not show up on the topos of the area.
Here's what I came up with as a possible simple route from Wellton exit almost out to the camp:
Exit I-8 at: 32 39’ 43.01” N, 114 08’ 32.61” W
S to: 32 37’ 12.32” N, 114 08’ 31.43” W
W to: 32 37’ 11.64” N, 114 12’ 37.68” W
N to: 32 37’ 44.49” N. 114 12’ 35.33” W
W to: 32 37’ 44.70” N, 114 13’ 39.40” W
N to: 32 38’ 04.31” N, 114 13’ 39.35” W
W to: 32 38’ 03.93” N, 114 16’ 29.27” W
S to: 32 37’ 37.77” N, 114 16’ 29.89” W
What do you think?
Should we rendezvous somewhere near there or will you be out early enough to set up a camp and we catch up? I'll be leaving Tucson around 1:30 - 2 PM...should be able to be there by around 5:30 PM.

Meeting at the highway is a good idea. The coordinates basically just track south from the freeway, then zig-zag west along what look like well graded roads till they get to a sand & gravel pit from the looks of it.
Maybe getting off I-8 then crossing under the freeway to meet there? Looks like a clearing on the south side of the interchange.
Will that work?

"To protect scarce desert wood, only charcoal campfires are permitted."

I'm more than happy to bring firewood; I've got a quarter-cord out back that hardly got used at all this winter. For that matter, I remember serious stretches where the only thing that has the guts to live out there is creosote. Even if it were ethically sound to collect fire wood, you wouldn't find much.
It sounds like one or two adventurers have fire pans....?
For the record, I canceled my hotel reservation to camp near Welton, or drive in early on Friday, too. (no offense to the crew meeting in Yuma :) ). I don't want to be a ball-n-chain on the camper group because I won't be able to get out there until after dark. I'll consider it gravy if I find you guys. So long as this detail remains solid, we're good:
Meet at 10:30 am at exit 14 off of I8
Also: My brother will be my co-pilot! That's got serious adventure factor now. This is going to be one hell of a trip.

I have an outdoor "fireplace" with lid, but it is pretty bulky. I can probably bring it on the the roofrack unless someone else has a better setup. Hola Amigos,
Pasquale is recovering from his knee surgery now, has lots of staples in his leg! Yikes! He is doing really well, keeping it iced and elevated and being studious about the 80 rebuild. We were hoping to be able to take the "new" 80 on this trip but the surgery may put us behind a bit. Waiting for the regearing to be done on the diffs right now, Pasquale & I are doing all the work ourselves and having fun with it!! We pulled the diffs out and sent them up to Slee for the regearing and the install for the ARB lockers. I input the coordinates I posted previously (that I had pulled from Google Earth), and found a bit of a discrepancy from my Garmin Topo program.
Not huge, but enough to cause a little confusion perhaps in the dark if using the Garmin maps.
The topo program shows only trails in the area, but the Google Earth images clearly show what look like fairly new roads. I chose the coordinates from Google Earth to plot; it's hard to argue that the roads aren't there!
I think Chris & I will be meeting just south of I-8 exit #30 (edit: not #14 as previously stated) so it shouldn't be a big deal.
But in the dark...I'd stick with the roads...use the coordinates as guides and head west, young man!

Chris has a map on one of his earlier posts.
But the trail that goes there is based on 1965 map data . The freeway seems to have eliminated that route.
We'll still be camping in the general vicinity, but will get there from the Wellton exit.
If you look at Google Earth, we'll most likely go south off Wellton exit (South Ave 29E) to the "T" (E County 14E), turn west, then zig-zag our way to the east flank of the Gila Mountains.
I think Chris plans to monitor CB Ch. 7 (as will I) so anyone coming in after dark can call.
I also just packed a few wooden survey stakes in my 40 and can mark turns for the late-comers...:victory:

As far as camping, I just decided to camp on Thurs. night since I will be coming from inside Arizona, and it would be an extra 50 miles of travel (RT) to go all the way into Yuma and back, plus $ for hotel and dinner... I just decided to camp since that is what I like best anyway :D You are certainly welcome to join us. As Ed mentioned, we'll be rendezvousing at the freeway exit in Wellton. I'm still planning on meeting at the Belle Vista Thusrday 7 PM. It looks like only half or less will be staying in Yuma, & maybe not all will arrive in time for dinner. Anyone else planning on the Belle Vista?
Al,
My dad and I will be there!

Though I haven't checked the mail today, I don't have my permit yet. I don't think Greg has one either so we might have to come into Yuma on Friday. boo hoo.

I have an outdoor "fireplace" with lid, but it is pretty bulky. I can probably bring it on the the roofrack unless someone else has a better setup.
Does anyone have a good portable firepan or washing machine drum that can be used for our fire? How about a container for ash?
Chris,
I can get ya a washing machine drum to use if someone in Phoenix wants to swing by and pick it up. Let me know!
I do however need it back for AZRocks in March.

Thanks for the offer! I will be in the valley tomorrow on business, so maybe I could pick it up? I'll send you an email. I will be attending AZROCKS, so I can return it to you then.
Thanks pal

looking forward to seeing everyone soon.
Remember, dinner at 7:00 (those who are attending)
And most importantly, those who do not have permits MUST be in the Fairfield Inn parking lot at 8:30 SHARP, as I will roll out at that time :)
