Well, it's said and done. Last weekend I traded my 02 DC Taco for a 1995 TLC. A month ago I was PM'd by a gentleman from SLC, UT for a trade over on mud and after lengthy discussions and many emails we came to an agreement. No, it wasn't an even trade, there was money involved. I think we are both very pleased with the deal.
Here are the specs...
92k miles
typical package (power everything, moonroof, leather...)
OME j springs front(+1" spacer) & rear
firm OME shocks
OME steering stabilizer
caster correction bushings
arb front bumper
piaa 520 lights
warn m10000
custom sliders
kaymar rear bumper
tire/jerry can swing outs
arb lockers f/r
arb compressor
315/75R16 pro comp all terrains
(5)Weld outback 16x10's (these gotta go)
magnaflow muffler (too loud, I might replace it)
The body is very clean, with the exception of the rear driver fender flare (falling off). The engine runs great, no signs of HG failure. I just need to baseline all fluids and go through all other PM's. The front diff leaks oil where the drive shaft flange is. This will be addressed during the regear to 4.88's. Unfortunately the gears are unavailable until mid april... The front axle needs to be rebuilt, the seals are leaking and the knuckle wipers aren't wiping. (At least there's no clicking at full lock) I'm pretty sure I'm going to do this myself, as soon as I muster up the confidence. I just ordered the stuff for it today. That's all that needs to be done to it before I feel comfortable going on any adventures.
How hard was it wheeled?
The PO said he never wheeled it hard. It's had a couple trips to Moab and to colorado. Nothing looks abused. I can tell it's had some trail time but nothing very bad. The frame, sliders and the rest of the undercarriage show very little carnage.
Pictures and more info to follow...

So far I have flushed the radiator and transmission.
The radiator had red and green coolant in it, but no signs of deposits. Now it's filled with red toyota coolant and distilled water.
The tranny fluid looked pretty red already but I wanted it done anyways.
This weekend I plan on flushing the brake fluid and power steering fluid.
Drive belts are on their way along with the front axle rebuild kit.
I still need to order the plugs, cap & rotor, PHH and other misc. stuff.
As far as mods go...
Here's a breif, primative list in no particular order.
4.88's as soon as their available
outback drawer system (on its way)
2 pair african outback load bars for the 1600 (on their way)
CDL switch (on its way)
hanna sliders
likely a hanna rear bumper
44gal aux tank
better aux lighting, I'm thinking LF 240's
synthetic rope. I'm torn between winchline and masterpull, any suggestions?
LED interior lighting
dual band ham
dual batteries of course. Odyssey or lifeline?
extreme air w/tank(already have it)
undercarriage lighting
tint
my old camera system
slee 4"
new wheels, no more bling! I'm torn on this...factory looks sweet, very common, but hard to find, and pricey. I'm thinking I might go teflon again. I'm also contemplating white steel rims. Black wheels are just so common.
I look forward to learning a new rig and wheeling with ya'll!

OME j springs front(+1" spacer) & rear
caster correction bushings
How is the steering with that setup? In theory, that should have your caster out of whack quite a bit. Usually even just the J's are pushing it with the correction bushings!
The engine runs great, no signs of HG failure.
Unfortunately, they usually never show signs! :(

I'm looking forward to seeing some pics too for new ideas as I get ready to do my own '95 FZJ80 build.
How does it feel with the 35s and 4.10 gears?
I'm kind of surprised the PO didn't already do the CDL mod with all the other stuff done to it.
I've heard about LED lighting in the interior. Is there a specific product out there?
45 gallon reserve tank? Hmmmmmm. I have noticed that I can get as little as a few hundred miles on one tank if I do a lot of city driving. I was thinking a couple of 2.5 gallon jerry cans would cut it, but now I'm thinking not, so I might be exploring auxiliary fuel tanks as well. Any ideas?
As far as the wheels, in my research on mud, it appears that the stock wheels weigh around 20-25lbs while the steel wheels are about twice that. That's more than 100 extra pounds if you change from alloys to 5 steel wheels. They also mentioned that the factory alloy wheels are very strong and have to meet some kind of Japanese standard where they can hit a standard curb at something like 45 mph and not blow a tire. Or something like that. I was thinking about going all new wheels myself, but I think I stick with the factory alloys, maybe eventually paint them black, since I like black wheels myself.

The LED's are really great. I haven't bought them yet, but I WILL...OH, YES I WILL. They make a HUGE difference.
Also, Kevin (Boston Mangler), Jeb (Skillet), and myself all have the 44 gallon aux. tank. Kevin even did a super cool Auz guage too. Even though the install is a bit of a pain, it is worth everything.
The only problem is getting them. But, check www.pvcruisers.com he was/is doing orders every now and then.

I second that! One of the best mods i have done to the interior for sure! I also added the NON US OZ spec cargo light that the rig is already wired for, its a super easy install and George makes an LED for that as well. Now, the entire cargo area GLOWS when i open the hatch, most cool when trying to decipher a beer from a diet coke at 1am! :D

Mangler, do you know of any current sources for the factory rear sub-tank?
No, but they arent very cost effective. Specter and Man-A-Fre each have them once in awhile via their garage or used parts sale.
Usually they fetch a pretty penny! I would guess about $800-1000 for the tank, filler neck, etc....
They are only 12.5 gallons and IMHO the amount of work that it takes to install them isnt worth that little extra fuel!
I would think that you would be better much better off with 2 jerry cans, instead of dumping all that time and effort into installing a 12 gallon tank. Again, that is just my .02
And I must be daydreaming or working too hard lately, because I am unaware of the factory rear lights, must go read up.
They are a non us item and can be a PITA to track down, but they bolt right up and plug right in! Scariest part is trimming a perfect good headliner! :D

I wussed out and had toyota do the radiator and tranny flush. I hear that two gallons of the red stuff is required. I should have done the radiator flush myself but chose not to. Tomorrow I'll bleed my brakes and flush the ps fluid. I plan on doing the ps flush using the engine off method. I've got most everything but the atf. I bought mobil 1 atf but I read yesterday that many have reported groaning after using that brand.
Has the phh been known to fail pre 100k? just curious, I'm going to do it anyways.
If I do decide to get rid of the jerry can s/o I'll let you know. Most likely I'll hang on to it for a while. At least until I install the aux tank or figure out where to put my water.
And as for the load bars, I ordered two pair for a total of four. I only need three for the tent but half kits are not available. I may figure out something for the spare, if not, it's going up for sale.

I don't know if you can just put new tabs in for the fender or not. But there is always the option of taking the fenders off, which many people have done. The holes get filled in (welded possibly) and most people apply a durabak or rhino type liner along the bottom panel.

Very nice! I love the color. :D
Just got done doing my diffs and x-fer case, and greasing the joints. Very easy stuff. I started to do the powersteering fluid by doing the easy suck out what you can and refill method, but that didn't work well at all. The stuff that came looked all grey and nasty, and I only have 86K miles. I'll be doing the flush methold you mentioned real soon. Can you point to the Mobil 1 ATF thread for me? That was the brand I was going to use, but now I'm not so sure. I'm about to do the oil now.
Man, you can broke filling up these things. I used almost 8 quarts in the diffs, 2 quarts in the x-fer case and the engine will need about 7 quarts.
I wouldn't feel bad about the dealer doing the tranny and coolent flush. I'm planning on going that route also. I don't have a tranny flush machine and it's hard to flush coolent when you don't have an easy way to capture and dispose of the stuff. I hope the dealer actually does flush the systems. I know they like to take short cuts.
I like your rig. Looks really nice. Cool score.

With at much (or little) caster, there wont be any wear issues per say, but you will experience wandering, and the wheel wont return to center as easy/quick as it should.

Back to your 35's and stock gearing question...
It's sluggish, I haven't done any hills with it but I'm sure it's super slow. On the street it's not horrible, just not quick. I'm sure the regear will do the trick.

Here's some ramblings of what's been happening with the 80...
After my last update I received my african outback drawers w/fridge slide, along with 4 aob load bars and a cdl switch. The drawers are in and they are amazing, I love them. They're built tough and they're silent. I feel very comfortable holding 60lbs of tools, all of my recovery gear and misc stuff in the drawers. The extreme aire fits perfectly in the passenger side pocket, however I may end up using a york :sombrero:
I still need to remove my factory rack :ar15: I didn't know this is such a big deal. One day while I had free time I attempted to remove 4 of 8 screws that hold down the rack. 3 of the 4 just spin...I then read on mud that these racks were a port installed option and they used crappy nutserts that corrode to the screw. So now I have to drill those 3 screw heads, and try to lube the 4 I never touched. I'll also need to drop the headliner to remove the nutserts as I heard they can break free and get caught in the sunroof rails - not good. When I drop the headliner I'll likely install a 2m antenna at the rear of the roof as well as wire in a rear cargo light. FWIW in either 94 or 95 they discontinued leaving a wire harness for the rear most cargo light, so I'll have to run the wires myself - no biggie.
I also ordered some other goodies from cdan - oem aux battery stuff, oem locker switch, fr axle rebuild kit, plugs, cap rotor & gasket. I have to move my arb compressor using slee's stuff so that I can mount my aux battery, this will be little while. I also want to wire up my lockers with the oem switch so I have the clean look and I can free up some light switch slots. I plan on using the factory locker dash indicators as well, I already have the parts.
2 weeks ago I dropped off my 80 to have it regeared to 4.88's. I went with reverse cut yukon's in the front and sierra's in the rear - thanks Kurt (cruiseroutfitters). The shop however didn't live up to their reputation. I got it back 3 days later and it whined between 25-55 mph and my rear locker didn't hold any air. After A LOT of disputing they finally fixed the noise and fixed the air leak. In their defense I brought the truck in with my own parts and they told me no warranty. However, I don't think the truck should have been released to me in said condition. All I wanted was my truck working properly. They tried so hard to get me to pay for something, anything. Without doing any troubleshooting they wanted me to pay to rebuild the rear arb. So finally after 4 more days at the shop, it was returned to me in the condition I expected the first time. Anyhow, it's working great now - no hard feelings, I just won't recommend them :smilies27
Yesterday, thanks to BostonMangler (he rocks!) we (read He) rebuilt my front end. According to the gear shop, I needed new wheel bearings and a new passenger inner axle. They were correct - the wheel bearings were scored and the inner axle was scored bad where the axle seal rides. So now my front axle is in tip top condition with all new oem seals/wipers/wheel bearings/trunnion bearings etc. I also upgraded to dba longlife slotted rotors with the kangaroo venting ;) and pbr 4wd pads. Thanks Kevin for your hard work!
Oh and I traded my bling bling 16x12 :yikes: for the factory rims!
Yes I know, this thread is useless without pics - I'm sorry, I need a new laptop. any recommendations? 2gig ram, at least 100 gig hd, 256 vid card, wireless, bluetooth.
I'll update with pics this week as well as what's next...

The Torque Spec is different for 93-94 and for 95-97's
The 93-94 rims have tapered holes and tapered lugs
The 95-97 rims do not, they have a staight Lug with a Straight hole that is held in by a diffent style nut (forget the official name)
The 2 different lugs have different torque specs, i have chatted with the famous "CDan" on this topic before and he explained why they need to be torqued differently, etc....

I would confirm this with CDan, there was a thread about this awhile ago over on mud, if i am not mistaken, there might have been a big variation between the OWNERS manual and the SERVICE manual, either that or the years and rim difference is that variable, its been awhile so it isnt on the top of my head! :D

Mark, Your 80 looks awesome!
I have installed the Slee rotors - they have made a big difference.
I have also the Slee SS lines which I have not yet installed
When my rotors were new, Ben at Slee suggested I wait a bit to install the 100 series pads. I think my rotors are down enough to install those pads, which many suggest gives a bit more braking power.

Welcome back home!
FYI...CruiserDan told me that the 100 series pads don't really give that much more braking power. They do however, last about twice as long. About 30-50k apparently. Supposedly people normally only get about 20k on stock 80 series pads.
And speaking of which, I initally went with the PBR (i think) pads with my DBA rotors. They have lasted me about 25K (non-adjusted). I will be needing to put new pads on soon.

I remember asking you about your brakes and you saying you were going to go through one set of pads before putting the 100's on there. So we'll see how long these pbr 4wd pads last, I'll likely go with the 100's next...So far so good with the pbrs, I'm still in the brake in period.

I don't know if you can just put new tabs in for the fender or not. But there is always the option of taking the fenders off, which many people have done. The holes get filled in (welded possibly) and most people apply a durabak or rhino type liner along the bottom panel.
Oh, and...

(beavis voice: snorkle's are cool! yeah, yeah. cool!)
Tabs are only .50 cents and it seems you will need 3.
You are lucky the main seal is not broken, that would set you back 40.00 dollars.

A little late back to this thread, but yes, 100lbs is a higher. However (and I wish not to upset the FSM gods, but) at a lower torque I had several lug nuts on their last few threads on both rear sides both driving to DRO and then back home (then) to DEN. I bumped the torque up a notch and have had no issues since. Mine are the hub-centric, non-conical seat on my 1996 FZJ80.

I'm embarrassed to say that my 80 hasn't seen any dirt, nor have I slept in any tent in SO LONG. Having two young one's is a lot of work, it's all worth it though :)
From what I have experienced in the last few months I've been very pleased with. The 80 is very solid, everything from the dash to the way the doors close. It's apparent from day one how well it's built. Don't get me wrong, the tacoma is well built as well but it rattled/squeaked a little more than the 12yr old 80.
When I first got the 80 it would track and wander pretty bad. I thought it was due to a poor caster angle (j springs + 1.5" spacer). It turned out the source was the 15" wide rims. Once I put the stock rims on it stopped tracking and wandering.
The road handling characteristics aren't as good as the taco, but it's still good. Potholes are a little more noticeable with the 80, the taco soaked them up well. Otherwise it handles great. It's not as peppy as my under geared taco but the 80 with 4.88's and 35's the power is quite adequate.
More later, time to leave...

I just bought the last available water tank made for the aob drawers from slee :wings: It measures 48"x8"x12" which equates to about 19 gallons. I think this will be perfect for showers and kitchen cleaning. The last one left was carpeted in tan so it will match the interior but not the charcoal drawers :( I bought a flojet automatic water pump for the taco which will work perfect for the 80.
I'm contemplating doing what captaincoors did here (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4098) to heat the water. But because of the dimensions I'm afraid of damage if the water gets shallow. Any thoughts?

Well all be darn, I had no idea that those were even available. Congraduations on getting the last one. I love Slee's stuff, but I really wish he'd keep his website updated on what's available and what's not. Don't get me wrong, Slee's a good guy and good products.

The filler is actually pictured on the pasenger side. It has a schrader valve on it because it was designed to push the water out pneumatically. The output is on the bottom facing the passenger side, below the filler.
I'd like to make something that sits flush against the sliding window so I can open the window and fill it there. That idea may leave things a little awkward with the window lock there...
As for the output I have an automatic pump sitting at home waiting for install. I'll run the lines behind the plastic trim, and have the pump inside the cubby hole. I'll likely have a quick connect for a hose with a shower head. And a fixture similar to yours for drinking water with an inline filter.
I may even install a five gallon tank with a heater like the capt's setup.

I doubt there's baffling, but I'll double check. With the shape of the tank do you think it's really bad without it?

It was actually really easy.
The hardest part is installing the lights - which isn't that hard anyway.
Here's a link to the links I used for the wiring and the dash removal...
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=89430&postcount=114
Before you wire in the relay you can use a fused jumper and take the suspect wire and ground it, turn the locker switch on and see if the proper dash light turns on.

Well I just finished cleaning up most of the install. Here's what I came up with. Thanks to all the info on Mud I knew what to expect as this is a common setup among the 80 crowd.
Here's where I put the radio. It's above the driver side rear wheel well. This way it doesn't really take up storage space, has fair amount of room to breath and I don't have to worry about it getting banged up. If heat becomes an issue, or if I just get really paranoid there's a couple places that I can install some computer type fans to aid in cooling. This orientation also allows me fairly easy access to the data plug on the unit to program it via my notebook.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/2m%20install/IMG_9715.jpg
Here's the antenna, imho it works quite well. If I ever get time (a lot of time) I'd still like to drill a gigantic hole in the roof and mount it up top, aft the tent.
PS, I got a new fender flare, the original was hanging by a thread.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/2m%20install/IMG_9711.jpg
Antenna cable routing...I just need to fill it with some silicone.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/2m%20install/IMG_9714.jpg
I thought I wanted to mount the cleartone speaker where the dash 3.5" speaker is, behind the grill (top right of the photo) for a stealthy install. However, I think I'd rather upgrade the stereo speaker along with the rest of the audio. So I put the cleartone above the foot rest. So far so good, I think it'll be plenty loud.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/2m%20install/IMG_9719.jpg
And here's the faceplace/mic mount. My goal with the interior is no wires and oem appearance (yes the gps wire is going bye bye too). The most functional location without it being in direct sunlight was here. It's within arms reach, the mic cable is not hanging in front of something and the lcd display is clearly ledgible from the drivers perspective. I'll have to snap a better photo

After ripping off another fender flare in big bear last fall (damn mud flap got caught up) I knew it was time to get rid of all the flares. I also wanted to get rid of the hideous chrome-like panels on the rocker panels. The double sided tape under the chrome stuff was a BEAR to take off so I turned to Line-x to cover it all up - including the holes that held the flares on.
The line-x was sprayed prior to installing the 4x4 labs dual swing out rear bumper. I had to remove my sliders so the line-x guys could get full coverage on my rocker panels, so I'm researching replacement sliders and am leaning heavily towards hanna's for the beefy cat protection. More pictures to come...
Here are just a few things I have that I need to install...
mobi-arc dual battery isolator
lifeline 100ah batteries
bajaoverland.com 37 gal. aux tank (oem dual filler neck, oem switch, oem overhead console w/gauge)

It was about 38 degrees and pitch black outside and I had this great idea of changing my air filter prior to heading to Yosemite. So I loosened the hose clamp at the throttle body, opened the three clips above the air cleaner and removed the wing nut. I disconnected the MAF harness and lifted the top of the air box enough to remove and replace the air filter with an oem one. While lifting the top of the intake assy. I tore a hole in the intake hose :( Apparently loosening the hose clamp wasn't enough for the 13 year old hose, I should have removed the intake hose from the throttle body...or removed the hose from the MAF.
The temporary cure...duct tape
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/fzj80/IMG_2572.jpg
Long term fix...OEM
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/fzj80/IMG_2573.jpg
Although the duct tape looked great it didn't create a perfect seal. There was enough leak to cause the tranny to downshift funny from 2nd to 1st. I'm guessing it has to do with the vacuum lines. Once I replaced the hose the shifting went back to normal.
Lesson Learned...wait 'til morning :sunny: :p

After months of sitting in the garage my 100ah lifeline deep cycle batteries (http://www.lifelinebatteries.com/marineflyer.php?id=2) and perfect switch 200a isolator (http://www.perfectswitch.com/isolator.htm) worked it's way into the 80. I'll have pictures and a brief write up later, I'm burned out... :Mechanic:

Refigerator, aux driving lights, flood lights, winch, 2m radio, water pump, gps. All great ammenities for overlanding, right? Unfortunately they only work if there's enough battery to run them. After needing my first jump start about 5 years ago I realized that dual batteries would be a great solution.
To ensure that all of my accessories only drain the auxilliary battery I've turned to the perfectswitch.
The way it's wired:
The alternator and the aux battery are connected on one side of the isolator and the main battery is connected to the opposite side.
The isolator works like a one way valve. With the truck running, the alternator directly charges the aux battery and through the isolator it charges the main battery. With the engine off, the aux battery can feed the main battery but the main battery cannot feed the aux battery. Get it? So whatever is connected to the aux battery will only drain the aux battery - the main battery will not feed the aux battery. However, the aux battery is allowed to feed the main battery if the main battery needs it. In other words, the aux battery is always jump starting the main battery. This means the main battery will never have a lesser charge than the aux battery.
All of my ammenities will be connected to my aux battery. All that is factory, will stay connected to the main battery.
Major players:
2 lifeline 100ah deep cycle agm type batteries
200a single rectifier perfectswitch isolator
2/0 welding cable
4ga marine grade cable
2ga marine grade cable
The install:
I started with the OEM battery tray from 91-92 fj80's
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/dual%20batteries/IMG_2645.jpg
It required minor trimming on this side of the tray...
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/dual%20batteries/IMG_2646.jpg
I had a friend weld a mounting plate to the oem hold down for the perfectswitch. I lined the edges of the plate with self adhering door molding to prevent any chaeffing or cutting myself.

I then removed the center piece in front of the radiator to run the cable through. There's an existing run in there that I piggy backed to. There is plenty of room and it's not too hot - an ideal route.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/dual%20batteries/IMG_2647.jpg
I cut and strip an estimated length of 2/0 to go from the aux positive to the isolator.
I filled the lug with a dielectric grease prior to crimping...
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/dual%20batteries/IMG_2648.jpg
Once crimped I sealed it with glue impregnated heat shrink
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/dual%20batteries/IMG_2650.jpg
I then slipped it into some conduit and wrapped it with electrical tape. I did this with all the cables. This picture isn't 2/0 btw...
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/dual%20batteries/IMG_2654.jpg
Where needed I added proper labels. The label indicates where it the other end of the cable is. I did this just in case I lose my mind
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/dual%20batteries/IMG_2653.jpg
I then ran the cable along the existing one and zip tied it together. The existing harness clips into the body piece that was removed to keep things tidy.

The aux battery engine block ground went to an existing unused M10x1.25 hole under the headers, behind the a/c. This is the view from underneath. I sprayed the surface and hole with a contact cleaner and hit it with a wire brush, I also ran a tap in there to clean it. I wanted to make sure the connection was as clean and electrically efficient as possible. This run was also 2/0. I didn't do it yet but I also need to run a good ground to the body, this is very important as a lot of accessories end up being grounded to the body.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/dual%20batteries/IMG_2651.jpg
Now that the aux battery has it's positive and negative I moved on to the main side. I started by mounting this 1/4" stud to clean up some of the connections to the main battery. This isolator is installed inbetween the alternator and the main. So I took the cable off of the alternator, landed it on the 1/4" stud and ran a new wire (4ga) from the alternator to the isolator. On this 1/4" connection I landed a 2ga from the main battery positive, the existing cable to the starter, the factory cable that was on the alternator and a couple other oem wires.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/dual%20batteries/IMG_2643.jpg
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/dual%20batteries/IMG_2644.jpg
The cable that was on the alternator needs to be hooked up to the 1/4" stud (essentially the positive from the main battery), it feeds some of the fuse block in the engine bay.
From the factory there's a little box that has two wires that go to the positive of the main battery. One of them is used to charge the battery, it's the one that's landed behind the larger nut. I removed it since the battery is now being charged via the isolator.
At this point the only cable I need to run is from the isolator to the main battery. Before doing so I mounted the isolator.

With the isolator mounted I completed the last bit of 2/0, from the isolator to the main, and finished off some of the smaller wires. I double/triple checked all of my connections prior to landing them to make sure I didn't fry anything. Per the instructions I hooked everything up and this is the result...
aux battery...
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/dual%20batteries/IMG_2659.jpg
The aux battery sat for a couple months so I hooked them up to a battery charger...ignore the loom of wires on the drivers side:oops: That was left from the previous owner. I chose not to deal with it until the aux battery was in.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/dual%20batteries/IMG_2658.jpg
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/dual%20batteries/IMG_2660.jpg
Now I just need to strategically place a few fuse blocks and clean up the existing wiring. Once that's done I can start adding all the other stuff in the garage like the aux fuel tank, water pump, lights, etc...

Nice Install Mark!
Question, why install the clamp type terminals rather then using the supplied bolt from Lifeline and bolting the cable right to the battery??
Mlachica
01-22-2008, 01:46 PM
Thanks BM.
I used the battery clamps for the main battery connections just to have fewer connections landed under the bolt. I don't plan on having a lot of wires on the battery but I just want to avoid having a stack of lugs under the bolt. FWIW, the clamp type lug makes more contact (surface area) with the battery post, meaning less reistance at high current flow. Do we really benefit from it, probably not.

So sorry to dissapoint you :sombrero:
Tacoma's are sweet by the way, I used to have one!
The Kaymar just didn't fit me. It wasn't burley enough for me. I wanted something a little more stout that improved my departure angle. The answer is the 4x4 labs bumper. The ladder is cool, it helps me deploy the tent or to get a better view. But ultimately I like the modular concept behind the labs bumper. When I get around to it I'd like to make a bike/snowboard rack (in place of the ladder). I'd also like to make a basket for a propane tank and trash (things I'd rather keep outside of the vehicle). The possibilities are endless. With the kaymar it'd be much more involved to make certain extras.

Great. Now I feel like a little girly mon with my silly Kaymar bumper. :hehe:
I do, however understand your reasoning for the modular explanation. Adding anything to the Kaymar, anything other than what they offer would take some serious time and energy.

I just stumbled across the Kaymars last week, was impressed with them as a possibility for my truck, however, after your response, not so sure. Looks like 4x4 labs might have to fab up a bumper for an 04 Taco instead of the LC's.
The kaymars still look burly to me; but never seen one in person.
Nonetheless, Mark I've still enjoyed your thread and will watch as things progress. Now I find myself eyeballing LCs.
Don't want my truck to find out though, shes been good to me!

Don't get me wrong... The Kaymars are a really good bumper, especially for their value and compared to the cost of custom fabrication. Also, that being said I have had my Kaymar for almost 60K miles, and it has been great. Granted I only do moderate, if any "crawlng." But the bumper has still been hit, dragged and banged and is still in good condition. It's just not shiny anymore.
The 4x4labs bumpers are just, the next step up. HTH.
Mark sorry for the hijack.
Mlachica
08-01-2008, 03:21 PM
Robb is right, the Kaymar is a great and proven bumper. I never meant it was crap for a bumper, it just wasn't for me. Personal preference, that's all. The kaymar is stout, I've seen it take hits just fine. David Zartman (publisher of 4wdtoyotaowner) took his kaymar equiped 80 across the rubicon and his bumper didn't take any major damage, IIRC. There's a thread on mud about it somewhere. I just think the labs is the next level of 'stoutness.'
If you plan on adding a 44gal aux tank, the kaymar has the best contour lines to fit and protect the tank. On the other hand my bumper would leave the tank exposed.

I've ran two Kaymar bumpers.. one on my rockcrawler XJ and one on our Landcruiser. Both faired fine. I ran the XJ one through the hammer trails in Johnson valley and dented it on the underside in a few spots when i landed on it. What i usually tell everyone... is , if they're going to use the rig for hardcore rockcrawling or plan on landing on it at all.. stay away. Go with HANNA, SLEE or something thats more stout. The Kaymar bumper is made for Touring, Overlanding and Expedition type use. It's not made for rocks.
Sorry for the hijack Mark.

Before one of my trips this summer my rear brakes started squealing for attention. I didn't have time to order stuff to do it up right. I knew I wanted to upgrade the rear rotors/pads so I opted to temporarily bandaid my brake problem by just grabbing some raybestos pads until I returned from my trip.
I was in for a surprise. When I removed the rear wheel I found that one of the previous owners ground down the caliper and caliper mounting template. I'm guessing so they could run a specific rim. It didn't look too pretty.
After my trip I made a few phone calls and lightened up my wallet a bit. Here's what I ordered...
- 4000 series DBA slotted rotors
- Axxis Ult Ceramic Pads
- OEM calipers
- OEM caliper mounting template
- And a bunch of little OEM pieces to make it complete
I installed it all this morning, along with flushing the brake fluid. On to the pics...

I've only done the bedding in process so I can't really say how they feel yet. The pedal is more firm. I'd imagine it'll get even better when I change all the brake lines to SS. :sombrero:
I can't wait to do the front. I did a front axle rebuild about a year and a half ago which included new pads/rotors. Only a month later the brakes were shuddering again. I'm guessing the pistons in the calipers are gummy and not retracting all the way all the time. It might have been because I was unaware of the bedding in process as well. I need check out my front calipers before I go forking out any cash. I also need to replace an inner axle seal - it's leaking. And Slee just came out with a nice looking installation tool, I think I'll have to add that to the tool arsenal.

Nice build up!! Love to see an 80 built. I love the water tank, just don't know where I would put it (we always have two labs in the back on the drawer system). What size is your tent? We are similar situations with kids I have a almost 3yo and 1 1/2yo so it has slowed the exploration and wheeling a bit.
looking good!!
Unbelievable that they would grind that much off the calipers, doesn't look safe at all. Wonder if the owner even knew or if the shop that sold the wheels just did it.

I had some time last weekend to complete my brake job. I also took the time to rebuild the driver's side knuckle. The inner seal was leaking badly so I replaced it as well as the hub seal (both oem). All the bearings soaked in gasoline and were repacked with mobil 1 synthetic grease. The birfield also soaked in gasoline and was packed with valvoline 3% moly grease along with the knuckle.
To top off the brake upgrades I replaced the front calipers with rebuilt oem calipers. And to match the rear I used DBA 4000 series slotted rotors along with Axxis Ultimate Ceramic pads. When I replaced the rear calipers I noticed the brake lines were showing signs of cracking so to improve pedal feel and increase reliability I replaced all 7 brake lines with Slee's stainless steel braided lines. Is it possible that the old rubber brake lines were breaking down and making the brake fluid dark?
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g147/mlachica/IMG_0167.jpg
I finished the job by doing the bedding in process 3 times.
Having the peace of mind of a great braking 6000lb+ suv is great. The braking has improved remarkably. So far I'm very, very happy with the setup and condition of my braking system. The pedal feel is awesome and the stopping power makes me smile everytime I use the brakes.
I ended the weekend with a trip to Big Bear. I ran Deep Creek aka Dishpan Springs with a few friends. I've never done that trail, it was a lot of fun. The 80 never ceases to amaze me.

What was wrong with the old ones?
The passenger side caliper had a sticky piston. I bought the OEM caliper rebuild kit as well. I just couldn't afford the down time to rebuild the knuckle, change the brakes and rebuild my calipers so I got some from Mr. T. I saved my old calipers to rebuild them for some hands on experience.
I also figured since most of my braking system was new why skimp out on the front calipers to save something in the range of 160 bucks.
Now I have great peace of mind having my family in the 80 while decending steep Sierra grades.
