Hey guys, I've been around for a while but just got around to posting. I just got a Montero Sport and I know there are at least a few of you out there with them.

I'm really needing some inspiration so let's see what you got.

No action shots yet. It is currently sitting in a container in Calcutta. I should be driving it around Kathmandu starting next week or the week after...

Wow I love the way your rig looks. Can you share some of the specs on the suspension and tire size? I love the stance!

Mikes is still the best breakfast in town even though Mike is no longer with us. Regarding traffic :yikes: - what do you think the bumpers and rock sliders are really for? ;)

Some more specs:

2004 Montero Sport LS, "amazon green pearl" color
3.5 liter with 60K miles on the clock
2" OME rear Heavy Duty lift
ARB high rate torsion bars for front
255/85/R16 BFG KM2 tires on stock wheels
Rear ARB locking differential (9.5" dif. with 4.9 gears)
And of course custom made bumpers and rocker panel protection

Do you know what kind of gain you netted from the OME heavy duty in the rear? I ask because I had no idea there would be so much clearance for the 255's with just a 2" lift. How is the ride with those D rated tires and the heavy duty springs? Pretty harsh? I'm sorry for all the questions. I just really like your rig. :D

DiploSport

I didn't do a before / after measurement of the lift. I read on the monterosportonline.com forums that the 255/85/R16's are the perfect size for the sport (and now I have to agree). Someone might have done measurements over there, but I don't remember.

In terms of ride comfort...You can see my other truck below. This was my daily driver for about 5 years before I bought the sport. Comparatively the sport rides like a cadillac even with the HD lift and E rated tires! :smiley_drive:

Though I have built my own bumpers in the past, with my current career I don't have the time (or space) to do everything myself anymore. The sport's bumpers were built by Independent4X (www.Independent4x.com) of Virginia. The proprietor (Matt) went to art school for sculpture before opening his 4X4 shop - I think you can see the benefits of that education :sombrero:.

Now let's see some other sport's!

Well, if you want more...

The new ARB large compressor tucks nicely under the hood on the driver's side.

A close-up of the swing mechanism for the rear bumper. It uses two very large (I think 3/4"?) HEIM joints. If there are ever any sag issues it is adjustable and gets rid of that pesky single-shear issue a lot of people have when traveling over a lot of rough roads.

That's why we bought it. That was an interesting trip...Wasn't sure we were going to make it back out. One of those "we should have turned around sooner" types of things. Idaho backroads in early June can still be very messy.

Mine's an '02 XLS, but it's a 2WD and as such is stock as can be. It's been the family truckster for the last 8+ years, with only a couple minor hiccups at the very beginning, and those were covered under warranty.

Great cars- I just wish we'd ponied up for the 4WD at the beginning.

They're stock size. Next tires I buy I might go up to 31" which I think can be run without a lift.

Actually you can bump up to 265's (32") with no lift. There are plenty of guys over on monterosportonline.com that run them with no problem. I think I'll crank my torsion bars a bit when I go to 265's though just to give it a more balanced look. This is actually the reason that I decided to buy the truck. I wanted to be able to run a decent size tire with zero to minimal lift.

Hmm 235/85 seems like a pretty narrow tire to run on the Montero Sport. The 265's look great though. That's the size I plan on running. Have you had any issues with them rubbing anywhere? Any other thoughts on them?

I love my 2x4 montero sport I call it the Moose, my mom was the original owner, it's my dependable DD. It has 187K on the ticker, goes through a qt of oil every two weeks, has been hail-damaged to all hell, been in two serious wrecks, transported a 14bolt,dana44,dana24, and np205 all at once and running on all factory parts except the waterpump, batt, starter, or ring seals plugs and timing belt stuff lol
when the 6g72 bites the dust, I'am replacing it with 4bt.

I drive the thing like it's a ferarri, squeeling tires WOT everywhere it's a fun little SUV:)
it can fit four 39" tires too

how do you crank the t-bars, my front is rideing on the lower bumps... do I need an alignment afterward?

mitsuman
10-08-2011, 05:23 PM
Where the t-bars connect to the chassis of the truck you will see a threaded rod. Just loosen the jam nut and tighten the top nut. Count how many rounds you go and do both sides equally. Take it for a ride around the block to let the suspension settle and see if you wanna go more or less.

As far as alignment goes. If you raise the truck much you should get the camber adjusted. But you will need to call a shop you trust and make an appointment so that they have the shims needed to do the job. Nobody has them in stock for these trucks.

Hey guys I'm Monty98 from monterosportonline.com! Good to see some Monty's over here at expeditionportal! I'm looking into the overland and long/extensive camping myself so I came here for advice, here's some non-action shots of my rig.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f176/jmscfrk/random%20truck%20stuff/IMG_0400.jpg

What you see is a
-torsion bar crank in the front
-added and recurved leafs in the rear
-a spare tire carrier off a 1997 Montero Sport that I added to my 1998, still in progress
-just some el-cheapo "off-road" 100w halogen lights on the front
-31x10.5x15 BFG A/T's that have roughly 40,000 miles on them, so I get some new ones before the summer! (if the wife lets me haha)

Where has the money gone you ask? Well routine maintenance since I got it in 2009, all ball joints, right control arm, wheel bearings, engine gaskets, spark wires, tires, suspension work, exhaust.
I've been delaying the work for timing belt, water pump, and front and rear cam seals....eeek...long over due, but might wait until it warms up a bit! (to work on it)

Oh, and I am at 140,000 miles right now. Still going strong :wings:

The Montero Sport is a great vehicle for towing.

Holy crap, you tow that much with your monty? I tow a 1000lb trailer and my 2002 struggles... maybe it's the elevation, I notice it most in the mountains.

I gotta look around for some current pics of mine, it's a 2WD 2002 sport, basically bone stock except for a roof basket. It gets the job done in the southwest, since we never have snow, and rarely see mud.

Here's a tech question, how do I know if mine has a limited slip?

kind of a crappy shot, but this was my son's 1st camping trip (he was almost 3 months old, so nobody was taking pictures of anything except the baby). This was November, and we were car camping at Patagonia Lake S.P.

PS- that's my parents in the shot, not me.

I' m amazed how good my MS tows after i put on the OME heavy springs.

The 2002 XLS and limited came with LSD. I think it was an option on all other models, so you probably don't have it.

Maybe the P.O. got it as an option, I climbed a steep, loose hill the other day and I swear I'd hear one tire slip, the the other, then the 1st one again back and forth up the whole thing. I'm just wondering how to tell, is it a VIN code or something?

You can check for a sticker or plate on the diff indicating an LSD or need to use LSD additive.

Alternatively you can block front tires off and put your transmission in neutral. Do not engage parking brake. Lift rear end from pumpkin using a Jack. Turn tire on one side. If other side turns in same direction you have an LSD. If in opposite direction you likely have an open diff or (possibly but rarely) a bad LSD that's not engaging.

you probably have the 3.0...the 3.5l is much better suited for towing

Hi guys, greeting from Sydney, Australia
Thought I'd post a couple of pics of my 2005 Challenger,
Its a 3.0 liter on LPG, TJM front bull bar, HID driving lights,
Auto diff locker from 4wd systems up front and factory LSD in the rear.
Great rig and very capable off road

I had the '84 4 Banger 2 Door and the '90 3.0 Liter 2 Door prior to my current 2000 3.5 Liter 4 Door.

I put on 'Air Bag' Shocks, and level out the Shocks at ~ 30 PSI after I hook up my Trailer. With >200k miles on my current Rig, I tow this older 15' Trailer no problem. Yah, a little slow up Vail Pass at 10,600' on Colorado I-70, but no complaints. I let the Tranny do the work up and down grades. This pic is in Utah after a taxing drive North from Fruita CO. I plan to run my current Mitsi 'til it drops. Without my Trailer, I've had my Rig out in some 'interesting' situations, but nothing like lots of folks here.

Just picked up this real clean 2002 XLS on Thursday. 98k, JVC head unit, and completely stock otherwise. Plans are to drive it every day as-is and add a few odds and ends here and there, such as a small compressor, 2m radio, a bike rack and dirt. Already filled up some of the neat little compartments in the hatch with stuff like a first aid kit, tie-downs, tools and jumper cables.

how much did you pay for it?

5,500-4,000 trade for my Ram. Price was on par for the location (southeast PA) and conditon. Similar SUV's (4Runners, Pathfinders, Xterras) with considerably higher mileage were more expensive. I lost a bed and heavy-duty axles but for what I was using it for it was unecessary. I've cut my fuel cost in half while getting more use out of the Monty. Hell, I freed up enough cabbage to start playing ice hockey a couple times a week. Long term it will allow me to take day trips without blowing my gas budget for the week.

If you don't mind I have a question since you have 2 selectable lockers. Have you played around using only the front to climb an obstacle then only the rear on the same obstacle? I can only afford one, and the either front or rear only locker debate hurts my brain and has been inconclusive thus far. Your input would be much appreciated.

Nice rig BTW, your avatar isn't too bad either. I too had a 1991 Talon AWD years ago, you have great taste. :sombrero:

Thanks, I'm lucky to have the two best vehicles from Mitsubishi.:smiley_drive:

The ARB switches only allow you to use the front if the rear is on, so I've never been able to use front only. The front makes it hard to steer. If i had to make a choice, i would go with the rear.

I would highly recommend getting the rear locker first. I have a locker in my montero, whenever its used it gets me out of the mess 90% of the time.

My 2001 Montero Sport XS, consider it a sort of Prerunner Montero Sport,

3.5L, 2wd with air locker from a 95SR traded in during cash for clunkers, OME medium duty rear springs, cranked stock torsion bars..

Is the lift needed to fit 31s on a 2wd,

shov3lbum
03-29-2013, 10:47 PM
31s are just a tad larger then the stock, and even was a stock option. So no. No lift needed for 31 inch tires. I had 31s for about 2 years before switching to my current 33 inch tires. Love the 33 inch ones, its what a lot of us have been going to. :)

Here's a few pics of my brother's '98 Sport from a trip this last weekend in Death Valley and surrounding areas. His Sport is bone stock on 31" A/T's, and he made it up a section with ease where a couple Jeeps (TJ, Wagoneer...) got stuck and needed assistance (lol!). Mine is the '95 SR.

Haha...seriously. Most people don't realize what their vehicles can do, they think they need thousands of dollars worth of mods to drive in the dirt! That thing was loaded down too - 3 coolers, camping gear, 2 passengers - both the inside and the cargo box were full. He does have a good deal of off road experience though, he also has an XJ on 37's that doesn't have any glass left in it (rolled it a few times, drives it with goggles and no windshield now...hahaha!) :)

I think that Sport is badged "Limited XLS". Not familiar with the Sports, but I know he has the rear locker in his and he needed it a couple times.
