Started this project about three months ago, my goal is to build a 4 cyl. 4X4 into a great overland vehicle. Having built an FJ(BajaRack) I wanted to try a different Toyota. First and foremost with this 2.7l engine I have to very be aware of every pound of modifications and gear I put in it. My first priorities were suspension and some armor. Using the truck as a prototype Demello Offroad built an awsome rear bumper with swing out tire carrier and fuel can holders. We are still adding a few more things to it, a pin that locks the swing out into place when opened, and some lighting.
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww323/bajacris/Aug10004.jpg
With the front bumper Demello modified one of their proven FJ bumpers, the one in the pics is the prototype. The production model will come out to be even with the side if the flares and will be available with no hoop, just the center, or a three hoop design. It will be sporting some Baja Designs lights very soon.
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww323/bajacris/Vacation2010032.jpg
I have an Icon suspension in my FJ and it has more than proven its reliability, so it was my choice for this build. The system consists of front extended travel remote reservior coilovers and billet upper control arms and the rear has extended travel remote reservoir shocks and springs. I will post in the future on the performance of this set up.

http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww323/bajacris/Demello005.jpg
I chose to put a hard shell (Leer 100R) for the security offered and that I can put either a RTT or gear on the soon to come BajaRack. I have a 2m and 3m awning already and will try of a Campinglab RTT.
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww323/bajacris/Vacation2010001.jpg
I have a HEMA GPS enroute from Austrailia and I'm looking forward to seeing how their system works. The tires and wheels right now are off of my FJ and are 285-70-17's, I'll be switching them over to the stock steel wheels and 255-85-16 BFG KM2 MT's.
My future plans are:
Fridge either a Engle MT45, or ARB(nice write up in the OJ this issue
Lighting, Baja Designs HID's, and utility lights, maybe LED's
Dual batteries
S-pod wiring and switches
And all of the camping amenities needed.
Here are a few more shots of the truck and any feedback is welcome. Cris:costumed-smiley-007

cool looking truck! is that a SR5 package on your Taco with the color matched fenders? I too have a 2010 regular cab 4x4 but it has the unpainted overfenders.
how did your Taco do with the bigger FJ tires and wheels? any plans to do the TRAC mod? (engages the TRAC in 4 Low by cutting one wire)

Yes I am affiliated with BajaRack at times. I'm going to have a rack that will cover the top of the shell and maybe some of the cab. As for the wire mod my truck only has LSD a rear locker is in the works. Here we are with my FJ at the Overland Expo this year.

Funny, I've been posting with the FJ on the "blue" board for along time, And then the Tacoma got me going on TW, but now I'm here. This site is more my style, I'm not a rock crawler, but I do like to explore. Got an email from HEMA about the GPS, here is their release.
Availability for international markets
The US based magazine, Overland Journal, has published a small press release in their summer 2010 edition on
the HEMA NAVIGATOR 5” with a published price of $869.
The HEMA NAVIGATOR 5” GPS is a very successful product in the Australian off-road navigation market as it offers
both street navigation and 4WD navigation and comes preloaded with all of HEMA’s award-winning 4WD and
topo maps including full coverage of the Australian outback.
In Australia this product has a retail price of $990. However, it has not yet been released onto the US or
international market. Early adopters are more than welcome to purchase it direct from HEMA’s Australian head
office.
The export price of this product from Australia is US$800.00 (ex tax) with free international shipping (via FedEx)
included. Secure payment will need to be made prior to shipping.
HEMA will preload the device with a 12 month licence of Route 66 Street Navigation for your country of choice
according to availability from Route 66 but the purchaser will need to source their own local maps for the 4WD
Ozi Explorer and Memory Map applications. See www.oziexplorer.com or www.memory-map.com for more
information on additional maps.
Note that HEMA Navigator is NOT covered by an international warranty so any after sales support and service
obligations will be limited outside of Australia. Therefore should the unit need any repairs or maintenance it will
need to be returned to HEMA Australia head office at the purchaser’s expense, phone support will be available
during HEMA business hours with the cost of phone calls being at the purchaser’s expense.
See www.hemanavigator.com.au for more information.

You got what I need. That rear bumper is killer! I also have a reg. cab Tacoma (1st gen) so i know the challenge of outfitting a truck with limited space and power. The 2.7 is a great powerplant but when you start adding bumpers, big tires, tents etc. you see the MPGs go down. Keep up the nice work!
J*C*M
08-12-2010, 09:09 PM
With the 2.7 you're right you should watch the weight that you load the truck down with, but at the same time I've been kicking the **** out of my 2.7 since the truck was first released in 2005.
Below is what my truck looked like, on 285's with my sport bike on the back, my buddies touring bike on the trailer, and gear loaded down everywhere. The whole time from DC to San Antonio I averaged 16 mpg and had no problem cruising with traffic. It's no racecar, but don't sell it short.

I love my 2.7, It's a little champ. Mine regularly gets loaded down with people and gear and chuggs along on the highway just fine, well at least until I get to the mountains. With the regular cab you will be surprised how much extra weight you can get away with. Awesome truck by the way, really makes me miss my old reg cab.

those tires look so much more capable than the stockers! I wonder how they will affect your fuel mileage and power with the larger diameter?

Don't notice much power loss, do feel the gearing at start. I'll check the gas milage and post results. When the truck was stock I got about 18-20mpg. Checked it today (random) 17mpg.

08-29-2010, 04:57 AM
16-18 now, was right around 19-20 as stock. Most of my driving now is short trips in the mountains (hills). I would imagine that a long trip the mileage would improve.

Whoa, thats way off from what my reg cab used to get. I was averaging 25 mixed driving and 28 highway. My extended cab even managed 28 mpg coming back from a ski trip once running 265/75s on both.

Having the "windoor" is great if you are keeping a fridge or other items you want to get to, and you don't have to open the bak up and crawl in.

My reg cab was a 4x4 the current extended cab is a prerunner but is usually loaded down with random gear and has a shell on it. Another thing I just considered is I'm at sealevel and its very flat for most of my driving, you are definitely not. Beautiful truck by the way, very well done.

It is a bit lower in the back, I have some 1" blocks I'm going to put in, but waiting to rig the back with the fridge and gear before I have Deaver make me a set of springs to level it out.
I'll get the mufflers model number, it is MBRP, as for sound, it does add some sport tune to it, but I really don't have a guide to go by.

Southpier, sorry havent checked this for awhile, ARE offers better windoors and back door can be opened from the inside. Both work but for overlanding I like the ARE.
Hubbel, dont have a build thread for my FJ, it has Icon suspension, ARB,Warn,Rasta,Mombasa RTT,Baja Designs HID lights,Safari Snorkle and what else but a BajaRack EXP series. Theres more pics of it on the FJcruiser forum in the BajaRack adventures and pics in the vendor section

Great looking truck!
Have you done any interior work or do you have plans to?
I know you mentioned a 3 person bench... I've been contemplating a regular cab taco but I have been informed by my (much :D) better looking expedition partner that a bench seat is a no-go for longer trips.

The 2011 is available w/ buckets, our Rat Terrier loves the center of the bench, but buckets would be more comfortable. As for interior mods other than led lighting, and a 2m radio, all weather mats, Hema GPS, and a seat cover will be the interior.

Got the BajaRack on the camper today, very functional. This is a model for the 4Runner with modified mounting brackets.
May I ask how/what you did to modify the brackets to make them work, and can you get any straightforward shots showing the rack width in proportion to the truck/topper width?:sombrero:

Installed the Columbia Overland Gen 2 dual battery tray. the tray was easy to install, and I'm doing a little bit of testing with the Warn dual battery isolator. Cutting into the stock positive and ground wires was equal to cutting the 93mm hole in the fender for the snorkle! Will be running some tests soon on the isolator. The batteries are XS Power D5100 AGM's. The S-Pod is hooked up to the aux. battery.

Great Truck Tacovendor, I too have a white regular cab with similar lift height. I am seriously considering 255 km2's but I was wondering if I could get some feedback about their performance on our specific chasis!
First, how are they in the snow? I regularly drive in poor snow covered roads/highways/trails with my all terrains and they do fine, how will the skinny km2's perform?
Also, how are they on the day to day road trips? Noise?
Finally, any MPG difference?
Thanks for the info!!

As you can see we finally got some snow 20"'s w/ an ice base and the tires worked flawlessly. Being 33's the truck has to work harder and it plays hell with th e clutch. so if I don't re gear soon I will go smaller. No road noise, handle very well on the road and wear better than the old Km's. I've never been stuck, just temporarily delayed!!!!

I love the tires and steel wheels can be repaired out in the field if they get bent. The only problem with the tires is due to their size I'm going to re gear.
I might be getting some General Red letters and will post the differences. I'm still working on the shell inside at this time I have an ARB 45L fridge/freezer on a slide and a WARN SPI air compressor and 2.5 gallon tank. I don't plan on sleeping in the back, the shell was a necessity for my dogs (can't do any climate control in crates). As for whats on top;
3 Zarges 470's with misc. camp stuff, primus stove and propane tank. MaxTrax, Awning enclosure and sleeping bags, folding kitchen. On one side is a Campinglab 2m awning and there is a Hi Lift Extreme on the other. Here's one more cool shot of both of my vehicles at Split Mountain.

ARE offered the windoors and heavy duty windows. It fits different than the Leer, the Leer fit over the bed rails and the ARE is right on top. One thing I found out is that the bed caps (factory) do not seal out mud and dust, so I had to pull them and cover the holes.
Hey Tacovendor, I love your truck! I just picked up a 2011 taco access cab 4cyl. I Love the truck and could not be happier with the 4cyl. However, I do have a question for you. I recently put a steel bumper and warn winch on my truck, and it dropped the front end about 3/4 of an inch. I don't so much mind the drop, but it seemed to make the ride a little stiffer. So, my question is how do you like the Icon suspension? I have heard a few people complain about putting lifts on their 4cyl because it made it so stiff. Also, how adjustable is the Icon suspension? Any light you could shed on your Icon suspension would be appreciated.

Tacovendor
08-24-2011, 07:51 PM
The first two were prototypes and were the first ones made by Demello. The very first one was a modified FJ bumper, the second was a bit different but both had the same problem and that was clearance and they contacted the fender and some of the grill brackets. The production model has been available for some time now and were selling as fast as they built them and they finally had one available to replace the test models. All of the clearance issues have been taken care of and it looks great!

No problem, I haven't heard of a problem with any of Jasons bumpers.
wilson
08-29-2011, 06:48 PM
no problems with the bumpers, just the frame having to be reinforced to support the load/leverage that the bumpers create. If that isn't the case with the 2nd gens I will be rethinking the hind quarters of my truck.
having read through your build it appears that you are still using stock leafs.is that still the case? did the truck ride differently with the extra weight behind the rear wheel? It would seem that it would be "bouncier" in some fashion necessitating a leaf change.

Do you like your Icons? I know yours are extended travel with the ressi. I picked up a nice used set of standard travel non ressi. I cant decide if I want to use them or not.
I think Coilovers may be over kill for my needs, but are there an added benefit to them compared to the bills 5100s? There were to good of a deal to pass up, overkill or not. What im worried about is maitenance compared to a regular strut. I live in a heavily salted part of the country
