So as the title suggests, I saw an AMAZING 300GD this morning out in Beverton just off 217... Wondering if it was anyone here or if anyone knows the rig I'm tyalking about. It is white with a mis-matched hood I belive, and some semi-tall, almost NDT looking tires on it. If the owner is here, I'm the guy in the 1st Gen 4Runner W/the shovel and Basket rack on top that was giving you the thumbs up and absolutly DROOLING over the amazing sight I was beholding. I LOVE this truck. It even had the sweet front axle/sump skids kind of like you see on Disco's fairly often. It was just SO beautiful.
Seems there are a few choice G-Wagens running around Portland. I've also seen another nice White "NON-BLING" model up on 99W in Tigard @ a Euro-car detailer. There is also an absolutely AWESOME Olive Drab one running around SW Portland in the Gabriel park area where I grew up. That one is fully kitted out and looks like an old Military rig. In adition there is an importer/resto shop over on Powell Blvd. just off the Ross Island Bridge that has a SWB rig with the removable top and the lace-on soft top...
SO many neat G-Wagens, just wondering if any of my fellow Portland Expoer's know of the trucks I'm talking about.
On a funny side note, you know how motorcyclists always wave to eachother as they pass on another. Well, I've started to make sure I wave hello to guy's/Gals in nice 4wd's and it's catching on. I about held up traffic drooloing over a guy's Rhino-Lined Toyota P/U and he returned the favor by giving my rig more then a few compliments. What a great habbit HAHAHA The GF says I "Pick up men" everywhere we go talking about neat trucks or cool expo motor-bikes. Oh well, I find people are really friendly and love to talk about their rigs and check my rig out. I figure spreading good feelings and admiration of a well built rig is a good thing and only makes us stronger as a comunity.
anywho, blathering over ;)
Cheers

Hi Dave,
I don't know of a white W460(ie non-bling) 300GD (LWB or SWB?) w/ mismatched hood around Beaverton, but Craig has a white W460 300GD LWB (603A turbo) w/ black wheels and black DIESEL logo in RR and he's in Tigard off 99W--white hood. It could have been the one you saw at the detailer.??
I haven't seen an Olive Drab one around town yet, but Eric in SW Portland has a camo W460 SWB w/ 617A(turbo), and Tony downtown has a red W460 SWB w/ black wheels.
I recently purchased a local W460 300GD LWB (was imported from Germany in '81 and has always lived in Dunthorpe). In case you see me in Beaverton, make sure to wave or flag me down!
Pics of before I bought it (I'm just finishing some exterior work like black center caps, badges, etc etc);

PS--I was driving down Beaverton-Hillsdale the other day in my 300GD and saw a W463(ie typically bling) coming towards me w/ a surfboard on top and I gave a wave and so did he. That sense of comraderie and community is SO important and amazing IMHO.
PPS--Are you involved with SAR at all? PNWSAR here.

Hello, Craig in Portland here with the white LWB that I converted to a 6 cylinder turbo diesel. I don't believe that you saw mine as I wouldn't have it at a detailer and like my G nice and dirty. I know most of the Gs around Portland as I work for our family Mercedes auto repair shop here in Portland. We work on quite a few 460 Gs here in Portland and I am surprised to not know about a white one with a mismatched color hood.
Although I may know about the green one. If it is the one I am thinking about then I am very excited to here that it is still here in Portland. Was it SWB, with a Hannible rack (which I installed), and is in really amazing condition. If so its probably the one that sold for about $40k a year ago. We put in a rebuilt 617 turbo and fixed everything that went wrong. The body, paint, and frame were in almost perfect condition with one of two dime sized blemishes on it. It was a great G and we were really sorry to see our customer sell it.
As for the G wave or headlight salute it does truly bring a warm feeling to my heart when I see another G on the road. I've owned my G for a year and a half now, drive it multiple times a week, but have yet to see another 460 on the road while I'm driving mine. Although there is negative side to this hope as well. When I come up next to a G500/G55 in my G expecting a pleasant wave only to find a rich house wife that has no idea what she is driving.

It sounds like there is a pretty thriving G scene in Portland. Wish I could say the same for LA's South Bay. My brother lives in Portland. Craig- What is the name of your family's shop? I'll have him stop in sometime to check out the G.

I'm not sure what model. I need some guidance in that area. It seems like the 280GE can be had for the least money, but they are unloved and considered a bit of a dog. A 300GD seems like what most here long for, but it seems like they are a bit rare. I'm looking for advice!

Ok, let me try to help (keep in mind I just bought my first W460, but have been looking at them for years---please chime in others who are more experienced with these).
From my research, it seems the 280GE's are the most plentiful, followed by the 230GE's, followed by the 300GD's. I would say that the 280GE I-6 M110 feels more powerful(maybe not a torquey off the line) than my 300GD I-5 OM617. I haven't driven a 230GE I-4 M102 but have been told they're geared lower (5.333 vs 4.888) so power feels similar to a 280GE;
http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=16703#M174073
I love my rig, don't get me wrong, but I'm used to more powerful(and lighter) vehicles with quite a bit of torque (300ft/lbs +) so my lil 88hp&126ft/lb 5000lb vehicle does fairly well w/ a 4spd manual on flat ground or downhills, but uphills it really struggles, usually requiring at least 1 downshift and turning on the hazards.
I'll be swapping in a more powerful MBZ turbo diesel.
I think in general my advice would be to be open to whatever you find that's clean, as rust free as possible, well maintained, etc. Was a red 300GD exactly what I was looking for? Did I really want to spend what I spent for it? No(I would have liked an even rarer color, already a turbo diesel swap), but it was 10min from me, Oregon native for all but the 1yr it was first in Germany, pretty much all rust free (small rust spot in the typical windshield location), always been maintained really well, has the uber utilitarian interior I wanted, rare winch, etc...so I plunged and went for it. I was looking at some 280/230GE's but they were on the other side of the country, had typical rocker panel/windshield/taillight/door/etc rust (would have cost $3000+ easy to fix properly), etc. Be patient, persistent, look EVERY day on craiglook.com, ebay.com, EP, pointedthree.com, clubgwagen.com, etc...you will find your "one."
HTH,
Jeremy

Yes, the Olive drab one is indeed a SWB, and I belive it does have a basket rack up top. I almost thought it had an elevated tail-pipe (like to match a snorkle for deep water fording)???
This is awesome to hear from local folks with these great trucks. To say I'm in love with the G-Wagen would be an understatement... Next to the venerable HZJ-70 series they're probably one of my favorite rigs ever (and of course 1st Gen 4Runners ;) )I LOVE THESE TRUCKS!!!!!
The one off 99W is right by my house and the baxter auto off 99W @ a Euro-Car shop I belive??? I was just drooling over it and boring my GF to death talking about it yesterday oddly enough :D . I grew up in the area (SW Portland over by Alpenrose Dairy) SO I know all the little back-roads and what not.
Great looking trucks guys, I'd love to go out and see some of these amazing machines on the trail some day. THere seems to be a real strong Oregon contingent here on the Portal eh.

Man I would give up on a 70-Series Cruiser and my 4Runner if I could afford to buy and build the G-Wagen I want... Don't look for me in my white G anymore. I sold it a couple weeks ago to a gent who lives in Newburg.
Yesterday I flew to San Francisco and purchased a dark blue 1998 Puch G320. So you can look for me in that.
I cannot wait to get the side steps off the side, get bigger tires, make stronger bumpers, make a roof rack, and add some more lights. But I'm going to need to save up some money first.

And Yes! This is a real Puch model. Only 1 of 2 or 3 in the US. The only mercedes symbols on the G is on the tape deck door. The shift lever has a G on it, the steering wheel has a G not a star, and all G wagens that I have seen have a hole in the hood for an emblem (where the hood star is on a cars) and on mine there is no emblem or hole for one. The door jam has the importation and federalization information on it and it is listed as a Puch. The G was sold into Switzerland or something to a lady that owns a vineyard in the States and she left then imported it into the States a year later. She spent $138,000 buying it and importing it and then sold it in California once the G500s became available here. The G has a "vag463" vin and was told that it was a Puch vin but I don't know.
I just found this...
"Consequently, 10% should be marketed under the Puch name, in Austria, Switzerland, Yugoslavia and the other COMECON countries. The reason of this share was that it was presumed that it would be much easier to sell under the Mercedes badge rather than the Puch, except in the mentioned markets where Puch products were already well known."
Hey burquedoka, I like the size or your tires and I was thinking about getting the BFG A/T that you have in the photos? How is the road noise compared to every day street tires? How do they do in the snow? I have heard good things about the snow performance but not on a G.
Also, I'm most intrigued because it looks like you have the same 16" wheels as I have and I'm trying to figure out what size to get. What size do you have on there? Thanks for your input.
PS I'm embarrassed on how small the tires are, they look smaller than stock.

Awesome, thx! Which rack is that?
Homemade drawer setup?
Looks great!!
It is an ARB rack, with some homemade risers to raise it a few inched so the sunroof would open. Yes the drawer system is homemade, thanks!
@ Somesnowday...... the tires are 295/75/16 BFG AT's with 30mm wheel spacers and 1.5" spring spacers (available from our friend Fernweh). I love the tires, they are not loud at all on the pavement and they just get the job done off road. They are just fine in the snow as well.
Thanks for the info on the 463 Puch's! I never knew they were brought over, much less built. It always makes me cringe to imagine how much some people payed to have their G's here in the states!:Wow1:
