"The software upgrade will reset the powertrain control module on the Ford trucks. In cases where the system detects unusually high temperatures in the diesel particulate filter, the control module will power down the vehicle.

The aim is to allow drivers to pull safely to the side of the road to allow it to cool before proceeding, Jarvis said."

Dodge and Chevy should be getting a second look.

Sigh. I just don't get it. Why can't Ford build quality vehicles? Is it that hard to not totally suck?

It's too bad.... Ford Superdutys were very highly regarded when they came w/ the 7.3 liter engine... Things went downhill VERY quickly with the 6.0 and now it looks the 6.4 might be problematic as well. Oh well... I guess it will keep the resale up on my Dodge. :)

Yep, you guys said it well... And since I don't like to buy used, and I don't really 'need' a new truck, my old 7.3L F350 will just have to stay in the fleet :-)

It's too bad. I saw where Ford has a law suit against International on the diesels. Ford is planning on coming out with their own diesel in 09 or 10 I believe.
My '99 has been great. It currently has over 125,000 miles. The only engine problem was a leaking gasket between the turbo and down tube. Oh and a leaking high pressure power steering hose. I didn't even change the batteries until last fall. I had to put new brake pads on the rear at over 100,000, but the front are still at 40%. Also at 100,000 the service manager recommended new injectors. Said my mileage and power would improve...NOT!
I've hauled either a Lance camper or 27' HitchHickerII from Deadhorse, Alaska to Key West, Florida with it.
I really like it except it is noisy. But what should I expect from a diesel?
I only hate the fact that fuel was $.50/gal less than regular and now it is $.50/gal higher. May not be a good trade off?

If I every replace my 2003 7.3 liter F350 with a newer model diesel full size pick-up, it will be a Dodge/Cummins (the only other viable option at the moment for me would be a Mitsubishi Fuso/Canter) . I hope to get 10 years at least out of my '03 and put that decision off for a while.

That really is too bad for Ford. I think that they were really hoping not to have any problems with this new engine because of the previous 6.0L troubles. This certainly is not going to help their financial voes. If Ford where smart they would have International build them a reliable inline 6 and ditch the V8 platform. None of the top diesel manufactures even use V8's anymore and every single big rig you see on the road has a tried and trustly inline 6 in it. Just my opinion.

wow, i mean wow, now imagine how fast that filter would clog if there was a bully dog or a banks setup on that truck. and what in gods name was that knocking! good lord it sounded terrible! ill stick to a cummins, much more durable.
