Well fellas, I am giving serious thought to selling my beloved Rover (2000 Disco II) in favor of a Tacoma. With a 3500+ mile trip on the horizon I think a Toyota would be a great truck for the journey. I love my Rover a lot and it is absolutely trouble free - heck the crank case is full and it does not leak! - but if you look at the Land Rover forum topics you see a lot of help needed. Tha Tacoma guys biggest problem is how to get a mustard stain out of the carpet.

Am I being dumb? Guidance is needed!

Well now you're doomed either way. If you take the Rover after begging it for forgiveness, it'll break down. The Toyota will break down just because it thought it would be funny.
If your truck's in good repair, I saw use it. Or sell it to me for $20

Heck, I'd give you $30:) It seems like your not even giving the Rover the chance to break down on you. I think that a well maintained Rover is quiet reliable. Which vehicle would you enjoy driving on the trip the most?

I think you should take the Disco on your trip. Just join AAA, and get the GPS co-ordinates and phone numbers for all the LR dealers along your route. Then, if you do break down, you'll be able to get help.

Or buy the Toyota, and just go. They do not break down. But sometimes the non-OEM tires may go flat, so take a spare.:costumed-smiley-007

Heck, if you kept the rover in good repair it will last forever. Don't worry about the trip unless you neglected your baby. Before my mishap I had over 190,000 miles on mine and it was still going strong. Even after my mishap I still did not abandon her and will soon be giving her a new 300tdi.

Yes, now I have a ’07 Taco, but I will always have the rover. The rover will now become the hard core trail machine and the taco will be the expedition machine. Boy do I love this stuff.

I have a 96 DI that has been gold to me. The only time she has broken down on me was when the fuel pump went out and once when the belt tensioner broke. Other than that, all I day is change the synthetic blend oil every 6000 miles and she runs like a champ. I have put 100,000 miles on her in the last 4 years.

I say take along some spares and take your DII. We are in the market for another daily driver... I was looking at all sorts of vehicles until my wife said she really likes the look of the DII. God I love that woman... permission to buy a DII AND a series 2a... I have got to be the luckiest man alive.:jump:

Will it pass CA emissions? If so, maybe we'll deal!:victory: :victory:

I don't have to worry about emissions and can offer $34.23 cash on the barrel head. But this bidding is killing me!!!

Hi!

I have own both brands. I had a Discovery 1999 Serie II at one point. I probably replaced enough components on it to build another one. I drove my 1988 Troopie for 20000 miles across Australia and Africa without one single issue.

But I loved every minute of driving the Discovery! Unlike most people, I am not sold out on one or the other. Given similar conditions, there is no doubt that a Toyota is 100 times more reliable than a Land Rover. But a Land Rover has a special charm and look that's really hard to beat. You get attached to these things.

If your Land Rover is already prepared and you haven't had any issue, I would not trade it.

Just put some fuel and enjoy it!

:p

I'm not sure what Cali requires, but it has all the smog / cat / air injection stuff on it. It passed AK standards with flying colors.

Man, sounds like you are already set on selling it...
Go w/ your heart but my 2cents is to stay w/ the Rover. It's been good to you this long and if it's not leaking yet it must be a good one!

Do you have the CDL installed? If so, are using a modified DI or a DII '04 lever?

Personal, I would keep the DII. You don’t have any leaks, the ABS must still be functioning since that was not brought up, and you have not destroyed the diff from over use of the traction control. No matter what vehicle you get, it will break down. You currently have a connection and an understanding of your vehicle and what you can’t and can do with the way its current setup is. This is hard get until you have spent several hundred miles behind the wheel.

In the end the choice is yours and I hope you the best of luck. I do know it is a hard choice, which is why I choose to keep my DII instead of junking it. But for what it is worth, it sounds like you have taken good care of the rover, so fill the tank with gas and point it in the direction you want to go. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures of your trip.

Both Toyota and LR will get you where you need to go, but IMO after riding in my brother Tacoma, I would take the Rover. The seats are uncomfortable to me.

Im certain whatever you do you will be fine. I wheel with alot of rovers and they certainly have more breakdowns that the toyotas. And the last time we were out the fuel thing shocked me. They arent running anything bigger than 285's and get btwn 10-13. Now feel free to chime in with your mileage but I wasnt impressed. I have a 2002 4Runnner 137k and my brother a 2002 Tacoma 90k no problems. Obviously regular maintenance is the key 100k service and I change my oil every 13k with AmsOil. To each there own but thats just my $0.02.

I did research Disco's prior to the purchase of my 4Runner I had a 95 Toyota Pickup. I looked and looked and found that they were riddled with mechanical problems. Although simple they might be that means down time for me and I cant afford any down time. My wife and I travel all over and I work all over the state of FL I bought my 4Runner with 68k in Oct 2005 it currently has 137k. I drive alot more than most.

My experience with my two Rovers, both Series 1s

1999 Disco Series 1 with 113,000 miles, owned since new.
1997 Disco Series 1 with 117,000 miles, owned since 74,500 miles.

List of problems
1. Rear diff break, removed driveshaft and axles then drive 750 miles home.
2. Power steering box leak, replaced under warranty (1999).
3. Water pump (1999)
4. Alternator (1997)
5. Wheel bearings (1997 & 1999)
6. Catalytic Converter (1999)
7. Misc seals

I have not had to do head gasket yet.
They have never died and left me stranded.

If I average the 113,000 miles on the 1999, I gets 14.5 average mpg over its total life (yes, I am a record keeper)

If I drive 55mph on the flat road of Kansas, I will get 18mpg.

Well, I don't know what to tell you. I have owned four Rovers - all of them really great. The ONLY reason I am selling the Disco is that I need pickup and can't afford to have both. I even checked into buying a trailer for the Rover, but space in the driveway is too much of an issue.

My Disco has zero problems. I replaced an H2O pump and the front cover a couple of months ago because I have a dog I love more than life and I noticed a SPOT of coolant on the floor. Chance favors the prepared mind you know.

The Disco gets Mobil 1 every 4K with a Land Rover oil filter and a K&N air filter. No break downs, good gas mileage, even with a rack, plenty of power and great comfort. No way I would hesitate to drive this from Alaska to Colorado.

I am making myself sick here...

Yeah - with the doggie, gear (elelctronics) and the place I am moving to in Colroado, a truck is what I gotta have for now. It's hell to be poor.

Sounds to me that the rovers awesome too! Not like I didnt know that already but seeing as how they dont make a pickup at least a new one, looks like Toyota is the way to go. Is to bad you have to get rid of a perfectly good rover, that would be like me getting rid of the taco for a D-II for seating reasons. Yeah I see you dilema.

I was able to get a smoking deal on an '05 Tacoma 4x4 yesterday. It has 7865 miles on it, white and will be a great daily drive - camping truck for Colorado.

Seeing the two parked next to each other shows me a lot. The Rover with its hertiage and character oozing out of every angle and Toyota looking a lot like a Japanese car. But then I look at the EPA fuel sticker for the Tacoma - and the warrenty, and fell a little better. Not much.

Anyone need a solid Rover with some great goodies?
