Just wondering if any interest in older toys. As far as build up's Idea's ect. I know there are 1000's of sites out there for them. I had/have a full size F150 that we just "finished" but do due other circumstances wont be used for anything any more.
I have several 84-85 toy's in my back yard that need something done with them. pulled one in the shop this past weekend to start tinkering around with it. It's an 84 std cab long box will be my choice of them to build something outta of. (A lot of copying of brians 89 build up and will be used about the same across montana).
As i go back to smaller trucks, In some ways am looking foward to it. Less room = more creative storage and less "stuff" to pack around. ( now the misses might not like that haha)
Ill get a few pics to see some interest ...

Post up!
I'm building a 86 4Runner right now. Love the truck but it is definitely an exercise in restraint and creative space saving solutions after my last truck, 1975 GMC K5 Jimmy.
Link in the sig for mine.

I always liked the looks of the old Ford F100, and I think a 2UZFE rebuild of an old FJ40 or FJ55 would be really cool.
And then...ever since I was a kid and saw "The Gods Must Be Crazy", I wanted a Rover of the same style as the "Antichrist"...spare on the bonnet, capable of winching itself up a tree and all.
There's an FJ55 (I think) sitting in a yard I see once in a while, hasn't moved since I saw it last...could probably make an offer, but I have neither time, space nor money right now :(.

This is the beast i am going to rebuild. I do have for it a "ARB" stlye front bumper and rear swing away. I pulled the boat rack, tool box, and tractor lights last night and pulled all the wheels down to the bearings. YUK! not one good one in the entire driveline. ordered them ...should be here this PM. so lots of work there. The motor {22r} is toast I do have good one in the shop (somehwere... amoungst all the piles of 4x4 crap or is it gold haha)
SO im thinking a basic reseal on the motor, new clutch and associated parts, rebuild basic driveline - bearings, seals, and u joints. new rubber hoses belts ect. High out put alternator, maybe the supra alt swap. some sort of isolated multi battery set up.
the ruough country 3' lift system and 33-950-15 tires.
The hardest part finding the right bed topper to fit the narrow bed rails of the early yota's. Build a sleeping storage area in the back.

Dig the paint!
BTW, what happened to the F150?
big sky trapper
03-30-2007, 06:05 PM
well I guess it be ok to say . The F150 was built so the misses and me could continue all of our outdoor activities with our new born son. room for a car seat ect. insulated/heated rear sleeping area for the montana winters ect.
We lost our son due to a very rare heart condition and neither of us really want to mess with the ford any more. A s soon as we get the radios and winch off it, it will go in the local paper. With that in mind I think the yota will be best in the end.

I had an '85 pick up that I sold last year. I thought it was a great unassuming little truck. Other than being hard to start with the carb in winter, it was a fun rig.
The truck had a 3" lift, BFG AT's and an old Smittybilt bumper. It did great on local trails but I think it would have been rough on my back for multi-day, multi-state trips. I added a couple of leather bucket seats from a '92 4Runner and a factory Inclinometer/Altimeter for fun. Had I kept it, I would have looked at an auxillary gas tank or a way to carry a couple of jerry cans to extend the range but other than that it was good to go.
I'd love to see a modern day build of a 20+ year old outfit -

Thank you and no worries.
The pics across wyo look great. What lift did you run and any complaints with that brand? and any steering issues?
some of my internet reading and has a wide variety of answeres whether or not the steering needs addressed with significant changes to a 3 inch lift or not. It might be one of thoe try and see then build from there kinda project.

I got one of these in the mail last night with my front knuckle rebuild kit.
Im thinking of installling it in a small pocket on the keft of the steering column. It seams to fit perfectly there. Being able to control the winch from within the cab will be nice, plus still having the traditional leads for those times when i feel i really need to watch whats going with my winch. Ill get pics when done soon...
I like the design of this one, being all the wiring is presealed in one unit pre terminated ready to fish through the firewall. The red panel is the same plastic stuff that name tags for doors are made from. should be very easy to work with getting installed and looking nice. They are made by the parent company in Missoula, Montana.

rear wheel bearings are all complete, should have the front end done tonight now that the rest of the seals and misc are here. The engine resealed and swaped on sat.

You guys must all be young. You have so much energy to get things done. It is great reading and watching all the energy going into your builds!
Thanks for sharing. I enjoy the vicarious build I get by reading your posts.
Keep it up.

Not that young any more and definatly low on energy now...Well its done!!!! minus i need one of those copper engine drain plug seals to finish it off. Pick up one tommorrow and woo hooo go for a good test run tues to work (90 miles round trip). Fine tune a few things and get her ready for this comming weeknds shakedown run to the little belts for opening weekend of bear season.
\
All four wheels bearings, seals ect. and rebuilt the knuckels. Changed all gear/motor oils, resealed and replaced the engine and changed the clutch. Flushed the brakes. changed the coolent, belts thermostate. all filters. mounted up the winch and bumper. mounted up the rear swing out bumper. (came off a short box that i built many years ago but not quit right for this long box. it will require some rear frame rail reinforcing after bear season.) fabed and welded a high lift mount for it. multiple fuel can holders. wired some cheapo 130 watt tractor lights.
All since fri night im pooped with a capital P. haha
I did source a perfect fibergalss topper woohoo and some 30 950 15 cooper stt's! (90% tread)
Next multiple batteries, bigger alt, rear sleeping/cargo area and a mild lift and as my misses calls it a "spout" ie arb snorkel before they go out of production for the early trucks.
good night all

Not to hijack...... But how wide is a Yota bed where it bolts to the frame? And did you have to seriously reinforce the shell to support the rack? Thanks

PA are you wanting the dims from under neath frame to frame or ????
SierraExplorer

Its cool you can use it. For PA's question, i didnt modify my shell much. I'm not planning to carry more that 60lbs on top anyway. As it sits right now i can sit in it and it doesnt move much. Big Sky, what size alternator are you thinking of getting and where would you get one? I'm in need of a bigger Alt. myself for my duel setup im going to make. :D

Im really leaning towards the chevy alt/with internal regulator and using this mounting set up here
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/OnBoardWelder/index.shtml
With out the welder function. I have one of those in the garage and i doont intend to push this rig hard enough that i think i would have to weld on the trail somewhere to get back. If push really came to shove I could use my spare set of batteries/jumper cables, some 6011/13 or 7013 rod and get home.
Ive looked at several other "bolt in's" like the mean green and power master series but at 350-450 bucks each...that just seems a little outta my price for that set up plus the rated out put on both are still way under what i can get a new chevy stly alt from the local supplier. An extra few hours in the shop fabbing something up to convert sounds good to me.
There was a write up on 4x4 wire that used i think a supra alt from about the same period that was 100 amp and was almost a bolt in. I think the lower adj braket needed lengthened a few inches and that might be my 2 nd choice.

just some poser drive way pic's
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q18/bigskytrapper/P4110052.jpg
The bumper is an older one from a now gone company??? called STOUT no sure what it was originally for but a few fabbed brackets later and its on there. fits perfect.
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q18/bigskytrapper/P4110053.jpg
Rear bumper. Its a BST built one for a 94 short box. Theres a slight dif between the 90's series rear frame rails and then a slight dif between the short and long box. Bolted it up, a few high speed runs down some wash board gravel and my rear frame was bent! so its welded on temporaly till after bear season then I will have a chance to get in there with some 1/4' plate and do some serious reinforcments back there.

Ah, Stout! I've been racking my brains for the last month trying to remember the name of that company! I discovered their web site some time around 2001 or 2002 when I still drove a 2wd Ford and thought they made the coolest stuff. I was disappointed to see they are apparently no longer in business.

"Patch", my '84 Xcab-SB is made from parts of 3 trucks. Hence his name. Original truck (tan) was built in Canada & sold in WA, which is why the bed rails & hooks.
33-10.50 A/T's & M/T's, 4.88's, Detroit x Lock-rite, Air shifted Marlin sitting on the garage floor (some work left to do), unkwn fronts x GM 65's, Bils on all 4, Icom V-8000 2m, Garmin GPS V, "Pro-Farm" spare carrier - tilted to clear the shell, RV fluoresent light in shell. Front bumper is my own design & fab, winch for it is sitting next to the Marlin. It's now a bit tilted due to a head-on with a Class 5 wannabe driven by a moron.
Love to camp the shell, hate to drive the shell. One color is on "the List."

Bumper was built in about '98, way b4 I had a digi-cam. At one time there was a page of jpgs out there somewhere output from SolidWorks, done by an ORC lister, based on my ACAD dwgs.
I've been thinking of selling it as I've never mounted a winch to it and now with the Sub in the picture I think I'll put the winch on a slider so that I can use it with either truck.

Ive had this sitting in the shop now pushing a month and had a few extra minutes before the thunder storm run me back in the house...
So heres some pics of the install. The coil/ignitor has to be relocated along with the voltage regulator, The inside fender hole centers right on the rearward bolt hole. There is plently of wiring there to move it foward to the front hole. The coil will need to be moved completly back a few inches to clear the hook up tubes. Ill have to finish next weekend with some sort of pipe/tube adaptor to attach to the air filter housing. Next all the rest of the mods that go with it..breathers extended on everything. and lots of RTV.

I had got some more free time tonight and sorta finished it. I dont like the way the air box connected to the snorkel so Im going to completly make a new air cleaner inlet that will have a near perfect straight shot. As you can see the coil needed to be moved back one bolt hole and the rear bolt hole drilled anew. plenty of excess wireing. Im conteplating when i move remake the air inlet to move the power steering reservoir foward about and inch on a new mount plate. The rubber inlet tube was cut down about 4 inches and flipped 180 on the air box inlet. A rubber boat plug put in the hot air inlet on the bottom. and RTV around the hot air diaphram. Next the drive line breathers...

thats the reason to finish,,,bunch of us want to run the Highwoods baldy trail via thain creek....can be as many as 13 crossing this time of year on that trail some nearly 4 foot deep! should be a fun trip.

that trip happen, so we overnighted on the front range.
Heres a pic of my back up lights. Just finished welding friday night so no paint yet. Its pretty much just a mini reciever hitch welded in the center of my spare. a few inches of angle welded to a slip tube with a tractor hitch pin to hold it all together. Not wired yet but the plan is to have them on a 4 pin trailer wire so it can be removed and reinstalled quickly, plus Im thinking of making a longer say 10 feet extension wireing harnes that can plug in for times when i might want a work light on the trail. setting up camp in the dark ect.

Wired the lights off the reverse switch so they automatically come on when backing up. made the quick disconect and added in the extension harness with battery leads so if I need a portable work light for ??? They can used as both. Dont know if I'll ditch the cordless spot light just yet or not.
I welded up my battery trays last night, and have them ready to accept grp 34/78 pair of batteries. Im leaning towards the NAPA orbitals. 950 CCA's. Working in a fleet heavy equiptment repair shop these are what we have had the best service out of on our 250 peices of equiptment. and all most run them exclusivly.
Im thinking of running the winch and all accessories off this pair with a isolater to keep them charged as needed. And down the road a type of master switch to feed the primary starting battery in case i need to self jump.
the pics...

just 2x2x 1/8" angle wont go anywhere unless they rip a hole in the floor over 2 inches! Pretty simple build. and Im hoping they work out.
Last eve after the misses got home and helped bolt them in the floor, kinda wondering once the boxes are built around them how much floor/sleeping head room are we going to lose.
To save weight and space, once the batts are in, She had a good Idea I think of using some type of rubber maid turned upside down and just wing nutted on to the top.
