Coleman Stoves

I have an older one that appears to have a stuck check valve. While searching for more information I came across the following:

I'm not quite sure what a stuck valve is...........

But you can buy a new replacement pump valve at Wal Mart for $7 bucks!

I thought I was doomed when my Coleman stove would not light at the beloved World Beater mine Cabin in the Panamint Mountains!

I poured some 10~40 Wt. engine oil into the pump hole!

And! ............Success! I had hot soup that night!

So.........don't panic!

A few comments:

I have a 3 burner version of the one in your picture. I don't take it camping anymore and it sat too long with old fuel literally gumming up the works. When you put the oil into the pump section it brings the old leather pump cup back to life and getting a good seal. At the bottom of the pump well there is a brass fitting with a spring loaded ball. It is a check valve that keeps the fuel and pressurized air in the tank. When you twist the pump knob clockwise you are tightening a needle valve that provides a more secure seal on top of the check valve.

Both the needle valve and check valve were gummed up and not sealing. I did not have the right tool to remove the check valve so I resorted to putting some super penetrating oil down in there and working things in well. I just had all three burners running in the garage so I have a good backup stove now.

Big 5 also carries Coleman tank caps and valve assemblies. The newer pumps use a neoprene cup which some vies as inferior to the leather.

Coleman itself used to offer refurbishing services. They would fix it and if for some reason it was unrepairable, they would offer a new stove (or lantern) with some credit for your old one. It's been a while since I sent anything to them, but I got a new 425E when I sent in a very old stove about 10 years ago. The old one's tank was full of rust and they won't do anything about fixing the tank itself.

There's also a fella here in Denver that refurbishes old ones and resells them. I can't find his number right now, but I'm looking for it and will let you know if I get it. He works on any and all Coleman gas appliances, so there's pretty much nothing he hasn't seen. I was last in his shop about 4 years ago and I need to get my 3 burner in for repair, too.

I have almost a dozen coleman stoves from running around the thrift stores in Denver. Probably have less than $60 in them all including rebuild kits. It is always my opinion that any nonrusted coleman stove is worth the time to rebuild.
