Driving back to Tahoe from Prescott I was passing through Topaz Lake and chanced to see a motorcyclist repairing a tire puncture. He was inflating the tire with a hand pump.
Having a full on board air system I pulled up and asked if I could help. Turned out that Neil was a fellow Welshman doing a little expedition travel. So far he has traveled through Europe, down the full length of Africa on the Eastern side. Spent a year in South Korea filling the coffers back up, and is now in the US.

Neil is on his was to Mexico and then points South, with Chile, Argentina, and Brazil in mind.

We sat on the ground and chatted, shared a carrot muffin bought that morning at Eric Schat's bakery in Bishop. An extremely enjoyable chance encounter.
If you see someone riding a laden Yahama 175, repairing a flat on 395 S, stop and offer a hand, it could be Neil.

"a little expedition travel," indeed! Does Neil share his experiences
through a blog or web site?

I don't know about anyone else, but stories of a trip like that are almost incomprehensible to me. Just so much travel, and so many experiences he must have had along the way.
And now Martyn, you are a part of Neil's journey. Pretty cool. ;)

He mentioned a forum for expedition motorcycles, I wasn't familiar with it and it went in one ear and out the other unfortunately. The joys of being middle aged.

That's a cool story and quite a coincidence. Sounds like one hell of a trip too that he's undertaking.
Martyn, what part of Wales are you from? And when did you leave the homeland?

That is a packed down little burro there. Apparently he did'nt get the memo. You can't travel that far unless your on a GS.
Thats a real traveller, wish him well!

I grew up in Swansea, South Wales.
Left in the 70's for lands with less rain.

I keep hearing that I can't go on trip because my motorcycle is only a 400cc.
Aside from fuel capacity and being just a bit cramped, it seems to be OK as long as I dont tell it where we are going :bike_rider:.

I just tell them that it's all I have and that I'll try to keep up. Still learning how to pack small and learning routes that keep me off of 75mph roads.

My brother is a police officer in Swansea and my parents live in Cowbridge in the Vale.

I'm really impressed with his stamina. AND the fact that he is riding a 175cc bike around the world. I think that he and people like him are telling us that either we are taking too much **** with us when we ride, or we have been sold a bill of goods stating we need huge bikes to try such an adventure!
My hat's off to Neil!:bike_rider:
