What a great idea and product this is. I just picked up a 60 L Recreational Barrel Works (http://www.recreationalbarrelworks.com/)barrel from MEC (http://www.mec.ca/). I also picked up a Hooligan Gear Barrel Harness (http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=253437430 2700553&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442544579&bmUID=1176072240025)to go with it. Such a simple yet cost effective solution for durable, waterproof transport of goods. After getting it home and showing my wife we have decided that we are going to pick up a second for some of our other gear. It's kinda a cross between a backpack and a pelican/storm case. The lid clamps on and there is a very nice flexable seal around it. We have a camping trip planned for next month so I'll report back with a review.

I have used a barrel to store gear for about a year now (no backpack setup though). It's great because it's totally waterproof and does well on the roof. As well, it serves a dual purpose for carrying items in the canoe since it floats.
