Is anyone else feeling the love with this TAD Gear stuff? It is great to find a company that makes serious shells, etc. that understands our way of travel, etc.
I just picked up the Stealth Hoodie and a few of their Overlander shirts

When I visited their offices in San Francisco a few weeks ago, they were all riding KTMs or driving Toyotas - pretty sweet. The owner, Patrick's FJ40 diesel is excellent, and looks right at home in their industrial themed offices.

I’ve been aware of TAD Gear for about six months. It looks like they sell good products but it is a little too expensive for me to test. They are in a pretty competitive market and some of their direct competitors come in at a better price point.
:)… I can’t imagine their competition drives a cooler LC than that diesel though.

Yes, I have. And I got it bad. Their attention to detail in their American made products is unparalleled. Recently they had a problem with a lock stitch on a coin pocket. They notified purchasers and recalled the product to repair the defect and pulled items from the shelf to make the mend. How's that for integrity!
Their pants and shorts fit me perfectly and are super comfortable. Only problem is they make them in small controlled batches so you have to jump on the offerings as they're posted.
My Raptor hardshell is durable and the most waterproof/windproof jacket I own. Superior to the ECWCS Gortex jackets I've used for years and more inconspicuous for everyday wear than camoflauge.
Also have one of their ruck sacks which is superior in features and craftsmanship from any others I've had over the years from London Bridge to Eagle. I use my rucks daily - not as just an urban accessory but all over the world through military operations and exercises. Good piece of gear.
Pricing is not for the feint of heart but I purchase for quality and durability. It's not like I'm going to grow out of 'em...
You wouldn't skimp on building your truck would you?

I used their stuff in Central America and it was great. The raptor jacket and the synthetic pants were particularly useful in a rainy environment. Very good stuff.

I dig their products for sure. I can't find their fastpack on the site anymore though. The pack was reviewed in OJ a couple issues ago. Nice pack. I put off getting it and now that I have a hunt scheduled for mid November I went back to pull the trigger and it's not available.
I've had those two items in my cart for the past month. I've been waiting for a gear bag and their Spartan pants in my size to show up. I guess I will have to pull the trigger and wait on the other items.
I served over 14 years in the US Army and have always been apprehensive about buying anything remotely military in styling since getting out. But since I have come across their website via Expedition Journal, I'm always drooling.

I love their stuff.
I got the stealth hoodie last year (finally got one on sale at their Christmas blowout) I love pockets and this thing has a lot of them...

I've also have one of their old school Tee shirts that gets a lot of comments from them when they see me in it.

I've been beating on a stealth hoodie for 3 years now, and its still my go to jacket. The best windstopper fabric I've come across by far. Their gear isn't cheap, but it holds up.

I don't have any personal experience with them, but I like the stuff I see online. If the quality and attention to detail is so spectacular, I don't think the prices are bad at all. Especially if it's made in the USA. I don't mind spending $100-150 on a pair of pants if they last me 4 or 5 years.
I'll be rockin' Tad Gear soon, I can feel it.

I've thought about this one before.
I have the "stealth Hoodie" but when I'm moving around it in there is nothing stealthy about it. It's not exactly "crunchy" but it does make enough noise that I've wondered how I would sneak around in a situation that required stealth. Mostly it's the fabric rubbing against it's self that makes noise.
Good question.. Hope I answered it right.
edit:
My comment above is in no way intended to be a knock on the product.
The Stealth Hoodie is a truly awesome piece of equipment. It has tons of pockets that are really useful. It's built tough and should last for a long time with lots of use. Even though it is not water proof it has kept me completely dry on a few hour plus hikes in the rain, sleet, and snow.
I absolutely love this jacket.

In the last year and a half I've purchased a TON of their gear :sombrero: . I'd go so far as to say they have the best customer service of any company I've ever dealt with. Period.
With their new website up they have implemented lots of cool changes like a Lifetime Warranty on all of their gear and a Paypal option for payment. Those are two welcome additions :) .
Here's their recent newsletter with lot's of good info:

Bought two overland shirts, three t-shirts, a gray Stealth Hoodie and a Black Ranger Hoodie.
Overall I'm impressed. The only thing that bugs me is the overland shirts, they come out of the dryer wrinkled. The cotton is very soft, not BDU quality.
The Stealth is not stealthy, but it's definitely better than the Mountain Hardware jacket that it replaced. Caution, even washed in cold water TAD Gear cotton will shrink. I bought a large in everything, probably should have got x-large instead.
I'm about to buy the wife a green Ranger Hoodie, she likes mine. I will also buy a couple pairs of the Legionnaire and Spartan pants. Like I said I'm pretty impressed with their goods.

It is indeed.
I've been a long time buyer of TAD's stuff and have never had much in the way of complaints or disappointments. Their products are top notch. They've progressed into a lot more homegrown designs over the years, but they do a good job with them - both with the design and production. I highly recommend the FAST Packs, the Creature Hoodie, any of their shorts, and special edition Striders. Wasn't too big on the Stealth, but I think it was the first run; they may be nicer now.

Just had a great trip in Africa with the Triple Aught Design gear.
I am still loving the Overlander shirt, which dresses up and down nicely. Only complaint has been the sleeves, which would not roll-up over my forearms - that has since been resolved according to TAD (good news).
The Stealth Hoodie has been flawless - the most exceptional jacket I have ever owned. I love the pockets and fit. With all the rain in Africa, the hood was sweet (I usually don't like hoods).
I also picked-up a Legionaire pant in green. super comfy and roomy, though the sizing is a bit different than most of my other pants. They run a bit big. Tons of pockets!

I have two of the overland shirts and they will not roll up past my elbows either. And I am a small guy at 5' 10", 145 pounds. This is a serious flaw in an otherwise fantastic shirt, especially considering the shirt is specifically designed to have the sleeves rolled up. Nice to hear that the issue has been corrected but I am not exactly happy to spend another $200 to get ones that function as advertised.

When did they fix this? I received one for Christmas and cannot even begin to get the sleeves past my forearms.
Are the ones that are on sale now versions of the small or large sleeves?
I am hesitant to purchase either the overland or work shirt in fear of these small arms. It makes it rather constrictive even when the sleeves are down.
Since we are on the subject of the overland shirt, I have to say that although the inside hem pocket is nice in theory, in practice, it does not help the comfort of the shirt nor do I think I will end up using it. While hanging it seems to add too much stiffness and when tucked it just adds too much bulk.

Often when a company makes a product and advertises a specific feature and it turns out that feature does not work, the company initiates a trade in program or heavily subsidizes a replacement. An example of this would be a car manufacturer offering power windows and it turns out they don't roll down. In this case it was advertised with roll up sleeves and only a Halloween skeleton figure could actually wear it with the sleeves rolled up.

Hey Team, just picked up the new TAD Pathfinder Jacket found here :
http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/Apparel/Jackets/Pathfinder-Jacket
This thing is sick! It has a tailored fit which is perfect for layering or as a stand alone jacket without stuff dragging around. Also, for those of you on the Blue Side, it still has ample coverage to conceal radios, cuffs, and most holsters depending on your body type.
It has been raining here for the past few days and the Pathfinder holds up nicely. Sheds water easily as long as you are not standing in a downpour not moving.
Be warned, buying TAD has a negative effect on your bank account! I would actually buy more but XL sizes for jackets/sweaters go quick. TAD > more Ranger LT Hoodies in XL please!! :ylsmoke:

Maybe not the most formal place for a product request, but is there anyway you might consider shorts without cargo pockets? In any moderate-to-hot climate, these extra pockets increase weight, bulk, and sweat. I'm not exactly a fan of wearing plastic basketball and golf shorts.

Thanks, Scott. This is a great forum for product input. We are absolutely interested in knowing what works best in the environments and use cases that the overlanding community pursues. Please feel free to share those insights, and I will pass them along to our design team.
In the past, we have offered Spartan Shorts, which do not have pockets. They're based on the design of our Spartan Pant (http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/Spartan-Pant-Sanded-Cotton-Twill), released last Friday, however we are not producing those this season.
This year, the answer to your needs might be the Amphibious Short (http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/Apparel/Pants-And-Shorts/Amphibious-Cargo-Short-Spring-2011). They have cargos, but the nylon fabric is very lightweight and comfortable in the heat. A replenishment is coming this June.
Thanks for your comments -JJ

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer, and getting out there and doing some great overlanding. Gianni's busy rebuilding his Jeep, the team is planning some adventures to Yosemite and Black Rock Desert. (Pictures to come, along with some great ones of No Limit X.) And Patrick's busy, well, with a newborn son named Griffin. Welcome to the club, Patrick!
Back at TAD HQ, we're looking for ways to provide ever better gear and experiences to our overlanding friends. We'd be much obliged if you could help by sharing your experiences with us by taking a brief 5 minute survey.
Take the survey here. (http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/575685/TAD-Customer-Survey-June-2011)

Also, some overlanding trivia for you that I came across while web surfing. I'm guessing the die hard overlanders already know this, but for those of us a little newer to the overlanding community, enjoy!
Fact: The first lateral crossing of the Sahara Desert was completed in 1975 by the British Joint Services West East Sahara Expedition led by Squadron leader T. H. Sheppard MBE, RAF. Using Land Rovers, the team traversed the African continent from the Atlantic to the Red Sea in 100 days. The expedition goals included: Mapping; collecting rock, lizard and snail samples for the British Museum; experimenting with desert navigation techniques using sun compasses, astro-fixes and dead reckoning; and field testing the vehicles.
Enjoy your 4th of July, everyone.

Those are some awesome expedition shots. The TAD merino watch cap is the best cap I've ever had, I wear it constantly in the cooler/colder months. I tried one of your older Ranger hoodies, but it just wasnt for me (odd fit). I've always eyed the Amph. cargo pants, and now the overland shirt, but the cost is a prohibition at the moment.

Thanks for the kind words! So, the fit on the Ranger has been redone completely in 2011. We did receive customer feedback about tight fit in the waist/hip area. It's still a streamlined fit so you can layer it under a shell, but we improved the overall ergonomics. If you are on our newsletter, you will also be shortly updated on a limited sale in the coming week or so. Overland Shirts may be included. The sale inventory list has not been finalized. Stay tuned.

Hi everyone,
We have 2 custom knives being released today, both highly portable and excellent for EDC.
In its second generation, the Dauntless Brian Fellhoelter Compact Edition (http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/Equipment/Knives/Dauntless-Brian-Fellhoelter-Compact-Edition) is the our first true-to-scale 3/4 Dauntless. Its understated style and reduced size make it perfect for EDC.
The third generation of our TAD DUK (http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/Equipment/Knives/TAD-DUK3-Strider-Knives-Edition) (Dive Utility Knife) evolves the classic design heritage of the dive knife. With portability in mind, we’ve reduced the size to make it even more practical for your diving or backpacking adventure. Made by Strider Knives.
We understand that when it comes to purchasing custom knives, it can be challenging to get one given how fast they sell out, especially for those stationed overseas. This week we’re going to try something new––we’re launching half of the inventory at 1000 PST and the other half at 1500 PST. Purchases of this week’s knives can only be made through our website. Please let us how you like the new approach here, on Facebook, or support@tripleaughtdesign.com.
We also have Paracord (http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/Equipment/Equipment-Accessories/TAD-550-Paracord) and a new air drop of Morale Patches (http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/Equipment/Patches) for your packs and hoodies.
Happy 4th, everyone!

We announce new products on Fridays via email and Facebook postings, typically. However, we will often let people know what's coming in advance of launch days via Facebook postings. This can be handy, as we have been selling out of popular items at lightening speed this year. We're scaling up production accordingly, but for the time being it helps to know what's coming and when.

And the new Stealth has held up like a champ in some pretty serious rain across Austria and Switzerland during the last week, I just wish there was a way to cinch the hood at the rear, it's a bit too big for my head and flops over my eyes...

Thinking about the Ranger hoodie, good review in this video.
http://youtu.be/WVzb0OgEd48
If you wear a 2XX T shirt, is the 2XX size for the hoodie to fit loose, or will it be to tight?
I like my jackets a little loose, not so much to layer, a short sleeve/long sleeve shirt underneath would be fine for winters here.
Ron Mexico
07-17-2011, 04:33 AM
Corey, I ordered the new Ranger in my normal size (medium) and it fits perfect with just a t-shirt underneath. Actually, I wouldn't be able to layer much more than that.
Once again, the cut of the hood is (in my opinion) not very well thought out. It is waaay to oversized to be practical, so big in fact that I'd wager I could put on a motorcycle helmet and still pull the hood over my head. Just like the new Stealth, absolutely amazing jacket but the hood could use a serious re-design.
Corey
07-17-2011, 11:06 AM
Thanks Ron, that is good to know about the hood.
I have two other hoodies in my closet I use, but I never use the hood part of them, I am more of a hat person if it is raining out.
Ron Mexico

If you aren't concerned with the hood then it's a great piece to add to the arsenal.
Full disclosure, apparel design/development/testing was my business after college so I'm overly nit-picky about the details. TAD does an excellent job with most everything, my only complaint with anything I've ever purchased from them is the hood design.
You're in Auburn, I'm in Tacoma. I'd be happy to meet up and let you check it out before you buy...

Hi Corey,
Check out our fit chart (http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/Support/Size-Chart-and-Fit-Guide) for guidance. Note that if you read reviews/comments about 2010 or older Rangers, we have changed the fit in 2011. One last thing, we don't have large quantities at the edges of the size curve (Sm, XL, XXL). So you might order to try things out when you see something you like in your size. Here's the return policy (http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/Support/Return-Policy).
Thanks for your interest in TAD! Hope it all works out.
Off to do some overlanding with Bay Area Expeditions. Lucky me!

I’ve been aware of TAD Gear for about six months. It looks like they sell good products but it is a little too expensive for me to test. They are in a pretty competitive market and some of their direct competitors come in at a better price point.
I've known about TAD Gear since 2008. They're the Gucci gear of tactical apparel and I agree with Momrocks....competitors come in at a lower price point for equally good gear. Some of my men have worn it but when I checked it out, it wasn't that impressive over other brands.
Scott Brady
07-22-2011, 04:49 PM
I think what separates them is the design. It is inspired by both the tactical world and modern design with a hint of heritage too. I cannot speak to the performance advantage (I have not tried their competition), but the clean, fitted and inspired design is what sold me.
This pathfinder comes to mind. I can wear it out for a night with Stephanie or slogging through a muddy forest trail

Hi Ywen,
Thanks for your question. We selected French twill for this shirt for a few reasons. One, it is incredibly comfortable. Two, when washed it sheds odors while synthetic can retain odor even after washing. Three, we like the look. It's classic and we have a lot of heart for the design heritage of expedition clothing.
If you look at the closets of many (if not most) people who use performance apparel, you'll tend to find more apparel made of cotton or other natural fibers (like Merino) than synthetic. Synthetic is great when quick drying is paramount. It can be lighter in weight, as well.
There's no single textile that works for all situations, of course, and we use both here at TAD depending on the use case and design vision for each piece.
If you have big biceps, you may want to hold off for the forthcoming Fall version of the Overland Shirt, which features a larger sleeve diameter.

Are all of their clothes really made in the USA? I went to their web page, but didn't see anything on the page about where they make their clothing. If they make it in the USA, they should tout that on the web site, as I would be willing to pay a premium for their clothing based on that.

Unfortunately they didn't have my size in the sale last month but I was able to pick up a Stealth hoodie a few days ago on Ebay. It arrived today and even though it was 108 here today, I was very excited to try it on. Fits like a glove - I'm really going to enjoy wearing this jacket this fall. Happy Friday. I'm catching up a little after a couple great trips rock-climbing in Yosemite and exploring the Black Rock Desert, the latter with our friends from Bay Area Expeditions (http://bayareaexpeditions.com/). We were shooting pics of our gear in use. Stay tuned. (This would be a good time to mention that I love my job, as you might imagine.)
A couple responses for you:
- While the majority of our products are made domestically, we do manufacture abroad when we believe it to be the best solution for a given product.
- Blain, we'll be launching new Rangers in the coming season.
And some news:
- We just introduced our new Merino Half Zip (http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/Apparel/Shirts/Merino-Half-Zip) baselayer. We're big fans of Merino, especially for its adaptive ability to handle a good variety of activity levels and conditions. It will wick moisture away and evaporate it to keep you cool, and act like a great insulating layer. Wool has been a fabric in long use by many desert cultures as a result. And it doesn't retain odor, which means you can get more uses between washing. This is a nice quality when on long expeditions.
We'll be eager to hear what you think.
Have a great weekend.

Good morning, gentlemen. I hope all is well. The team at TAD just got back from Las Vegas. We were invited by Selectism (http://www.selectism.com/news/?s=triple+aught+design) to join the Project show. The basic idea was that performance clothing like TAD is now pushing casual clothing makers to provide more function for the wearer. We've been doing that for 14 years now, and it's nice to see that the idea of not sacrificing performance for style is gaining some momentum.
In other news, we just introduced our evolved Overland Shirt (http://www.tripleaughtdesign.com/Apparel/Overland-Long-Sleeve-Shirt). Introduced for the first time last Fall, we've been soliciting your feedback to make this interpretation of the classic expedition shirt even better. Folks like Scott Brady, Graham Jackson, and James Brown have put this shirt through the paces. The result is an enlarged sleeve diameter to facilitate easy roll up and the addition of low profile, taped buttons for a more subdued look.
It's made of incredibly soft cotton in a French twill, and available in khaki and olive. We look forward to hearing your questions and feedback.
Enjoy the weekend,
JJ

On the overland Shirt I would like to see the button hole be sideways on the breast pockets so that the tabs can be pulled upward and the button will be released easily for smooth one handed access.
Will the new overland shirt be the one provided with the Overland Journal subscription offer or are they the old stock? I don't want to get another overland shirt if I cannot roll up the sleeves.
Also, where is the Street fighter Jacket and the Shemagh shown in the overland journal ad on your website?

Hi folks,
Here's a little advanced intel about our Friday plans. The evolved Ranger Hoodie has a fit designed for speed, and has been field-proven by explorers and soliders alike since 2002. From the high quality heavyweight Polartec WindPro to the attention to fit and intelligent pocket placement, this is a rugged fleece designed to get you through colder expeditions with agility and ease.
In this photo, our friend, Josh Webster gives the Ranger a test on our Yosemite climbing trip. Josh is on the leadership team of Team Rubicon and is a PJ to boot.
Plus Olive Spartans will also be restocked, now with a hemmed inseam. Pairs excellently with our Overland Shirt in Khaki.

tperkins,
If it helps with the sizing I have the Medium original Overland Shirt with the smaller sleeves and the fit is what most manufacturers would call Modern, Slim, or Athletic on my frame. I have a 43" chest and 32" waist. There is just enough room up top to not look tight and the waist is small enough to not look too baggy. Now if I had my choice, I'd still take out some of the material in the waist, but that would not work for most people.

Yeah, I kind of don't like the redesign... it fits okay around my thighs but its a lot more snug a little further north... no, not the waist. Let's just say it can be disturbing to squat or sit down and get a "squeeze," which urgently causes you to drop everything to readjust. Just a bit uncomfortable especially if you're driving any distance.
Tell Patrick he can go back to the old design anytime for me.
Sounds like we're in the same boat for fitting. I guess if they loosen the pants I'll look into getting them.

Some of it is, some isn't. If you look under the specs tab on most clothing it will specify. I think all their fleece's are US made, along with the pants, and some other items.
• Our fleece jackets are made in California from Polartec.
• All of our pants are shorts are made in California from custom milled 50/50 NYCO to nylon wovens.
• All of our shirts/tops are made in California.
• Our merino wool styles are knitted in China from Australian and New Zealand yarns.
• Our softshells are currently made in Canada.
• Our nylon is sewn with MILSPEC materials and construction in California.
• Our billet and other hard goods are made in the USA, expect for our Survival Spark (Made in Japan).
Hope that gives you a wide view of our manufacturing origins. I'd say over 85% of our goods are made in North America, mostly in my home state of California.

I have several other earlier version TAD pants and they are great, but this last years redesign neglected to include the "ballroom" in the plans. :Wow1:
Some body types might feel a difference in our new pattern due to the lowering of rise. The gusset for "swing room" is the same, however, if you hike up the new patterned pant to where the old pattern used to be, that room in the gusset may seem less. Ie, hiking up the pant to the where the waist used to be will effectively reduce the room in the gusset. We lowered the rise to accommodate our customer's feedback on fit and update the pattern. These F10's are not "low rise" by any means, but they are not of a high rise as they used to be. The current rise is considered a "medium" rise and fits the widest range of body types in our customer group. So, try the pant on with the waist so it rides just above the hip and this is where the pant is meant to sit. Hope that helps explain some of how the new patterning works.

Just don't forget to channel Steve Jobs when you tell them they're doing it wrong :sombrero:

I've adjusted to the fit, you just can't carry anything on your belt, in or out of your pants, with any weight on it; otherwise gravity takes over... kind of looks like Chris Farley, the motivational speaker, down by the river if you know what I mean.

Got myself a pair in Tan as well! Gonna wait for the NYCO shorts to drop and then I'm also gonna pick up a pair of those in ME Green to replace my older, all-cotton TAD shorts. Also added a globe patch to this order. Love it!:

Nice man! Those are going to be great as well and plan on picking up a pair when they are available. Got to be fast though...My bro missed out on a pair of grey ACS today cause he didn't believe me!
I like that patch.
TAD gear is really nice, but constantly sold out. For example their amphibious shorts were restocked and sold out in less than a day.
I really like their gear but get tired of having to constantly stalk their website.

HA! I get their email alert... they were sold out when it hit my inbox.
Your best bet is to check the website the Thursday before the email alert is launched on Fridays. Just maybe you'll get lucky. Also, since it's early in the season, I'm certain they'll order more from their manufacturer. Patience.

Alrighty then. I apologize in my sloppy Japanese for your inability to procure some TAD shorts and offer an alternative to get them as a friendly gesture and you insult me?
You have much to learn from that culture. When I lived there, native Japanese always appreciated it when we tried to speak their language and learn their culture. The friends we still have there over a decade later don't seem as easily offended as you, 外人 (gaijin).
Your apology is insulting, too late, and too little, especially untranslated.

I must get my email before you guys then cause I had no problems ordering two pairs after I got the email. Even had time to call my brother and have him get a pair too, though grey were sold out by that time.

Ive been a long time TAD buyer, and admit that their stuff has been hard to get recently. But it really is top notch gear. I put pants, jackets, and packs through serious use recently and all have been g
reat. I just have to worry about replacement if I manage to destroy something, but I trust the stuff to withstand abuse.
I even have an old topo logo sticker on my defender :).

Funny we end up on the same forums! Anyone on here pick up a dauntless? I have yet to pull the trigger on one.
Since after a couple years of lurking I've finally decided to register on here... I felt the need to post in here and say that my T.A.D. Ranger hoodie is one of the best purchases I've ever made. I bought it for my self with some tax return money a while back and it has been well worth every dollar.
Thank you TAD for creating quality products!

I would if I could ever find one not sold out. I have too many pieces to list, but I do love how bomb proof their clothes are. I don't particularly care for their packs, but to each his own. I do own a GoRuck, though.

$47 for a spork? No matter how great their gear is, having a spork listed for $47 and a decorative bead that you can add to your lanyard for $135 makes me feel like somebody is getting ripped off. They may be a great, made in American company with gear you can hand down to your son but seeing that stuff on there makes me think they're overcharging for their product.

I had a look at the stuff like the hand crafted sterling silver bead. It may be a bit over the top for some people but that hardly means it is over priced. Hand made stuff with attention to detail and real value for money seems out of fashion in this "Wal Mart" environment but some of us are interested in and willing to pay for it and appreciate that it keeps American (or in my case Canadian) artisans and craftsmen working. The company I work for is expensive to hire and we are rarely the low bid but we are busy as hell because our customers understand the value of of our service and attention to detail. We are often called in after the warranty period (of a job we didn't get) to make things right. To make a long story short, if you don't see the value fine. You may be perfectly happy with something else but that doesn't make the TAD stuff over-priced but merely out of your reach.:coffee:

Brett and Anthony (from TAD) were at the ITS Tactical Muster last month. It was great to talk to them about the company and see they are interested in continuing their skill sets. Brett also does some crazy things like the Survival Trial and other adventure challenges.
The entire company profile is pretty amazing and a great American success story.
