Following a well established tradition of bringing exclusive content to our members, Expedition Portal and The Africa Overland Network are proud to announce our latest project - Overland Live.

We have teamed together to bring you a new and exciting way to learn about and interact with everything related to Overland travel and travelers.

Situated between a Webinar and a video presentation, Overland Live will allow you to hear and see the presenters - live!
You will have the opportunity to send your questions in advance and get answers during the session.

The presentation will also be recorded so those who can't make the live broadcast may view it later.

For our very first session, we are excited to announce as our presenters:

Frederik and Josephine (www.radiobaobab.be (http://www.radiobaobab.be)), the overlanders who recently traveled across Congo (DRC) while journeying around the world for 2 years.
They will share details about their challenges and accomplishments, as well as answer your questions.
The presentation will be held on Sunday Dec 5th at 11:00 am Pacific Standard Time.

The number of guests is limited (200) so reserve in advance to secure your spot - it is free!

http://overlandlive.doattend.com

Also please note that this requires a high speed connection and a laptop/computer with adequate processing capacity. The session will have a live chat and video stream.

More details on the technical functioning of the session will be provided next week.

Get your questions ready - we must receive them by Dec 1st!

Thank you,

The Expo and Africa Overand Network team!

Very Very cool,
signed up and added to the Google Calendar

It would be great to get a "future of the industry" session that takes into account the recent growth and the new slew of vehicles aval for overlanding

Another would be get Jay & Alice (and kids) to talk about real life family on the road stuff.

Crap! I just saw this and got so excited, then realized it's on a military training weekend for me (figures). I want to attend every single one going forward that doesn't conflict with national defense. ( I need to retire..this is just silly).

Thank you so much for recording and posting the video after the fact, for unfortunate souls like myself.

More info on the session:

We are using Webex (http://www.webex.com/). If you are not familiar with the product, I would suggest that you log in at least 20-30 minutes before the session. We will be online getting ready.

You can also go on their website anytime and join a live demo:

http://www.webex.com/dailydemo/index.php?TrackID=1017642&hbxref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.webex.com%2F&goid=live_demo

There is a slight learning curve so please make sure you can work you way around.

The presentation will be hosted by me and/or Martin.

There will be a short introduction by Scott Brady.
Then F&J will do a quick overview of their entire trip.
The last section will be a Q&A session.

A few things about Webex.

You will see a live video stream of F&J.
Everyone will be muted.
There is a chat window on which you can send message to the entire group, or just a specific person. This is what we will use if you want to ask a question.

Send the question to the presenter and he will go through it and ask F&J if there is enough time.

Christian P.
12-03-2010, 03:16 PM
Don't forget the first presentation is this Sunday, Dec 5th.

For those of you who have registered, you will be receiving an invitation email today with the details.

If you don't receive the email or if you would like to attend - last minute (we still have about two dozens "seat" available), you can just click that link Sunday morning:

12-04-2010, 06:53 PM
Reminder - the presentation is tomorrow at 11:00 am Pacific Time.

We will start the session 1hr earlier to give people time to familiarize themselves with the Webex tool.

Quick agenda:

-Introduction from Martin (The Africa Network) and Scott (Expeditions West)
-Josephine and Frederik presentation of their 2 years journey around the world.
-Q&A

In addition to discussing the Congo, F&J will be presenting their entire trip - they have some great stories!

It will be possible to join even if you have not registered yet.

Excellent presentation, Christian. Thanks for hosting this. Can't wait for the next in the series!

Thanks again!

A few more comments:

-i think the session went extremely well. we had done some testing before but i was still nervous..
-we had about 70-80 people watching/listening/asking questions.
-the chat formula works well I think. You can comment and ask question as the session goes - and everyome sees it. if the presentor wants to, they can answer right away or delay to later.
-in order to avoid unwanted noise, everyone is muted except the presenter and the host.
-starting next year, we will have more regular sessions. The first guest on Jan 9th is Luis/Lacey from Lostworldexpedition.

You can already register and see some of the presentations coming - we will have some special guests to announce soon...

I really think these sessions have much more value as a Q&A instead of a trip report.
The 1 way mode of a website or written 2 way of a forum works best for presenting an overview of a trip.
The value of a live session is interaction, the ability to ask questions and get answers and the emotions that come through when a person speaks. All the non-verbal cues that are a major part of asking someone thought provoking questions.
To take it a step further, I would say that a live session has it's greatest value in non-tech questions.
Asking about how the truck was build is a forum thing, asking about what it was like "living" in the truck for 2 years is an emotional thing as best ask live.

I enjoyed the trip overview, don't get me wrong, but with only a very limited amount of time I think people will do this for the chance to connect and get the real feel for the presenters.

For me personally it is all about how a trip changes someone, how they felt, what they were thinking/feeling in the moment. What was in their toolkit is for the forum.

The session will be slightly different from the previous sessions - this one will be an interactive discussion on creating your overland website and more importantly the type of content for the right audience.
