Oh yes , I see you are a seasoned southern Chile visitor... yes , that ferry is the one sailing from Puerto Montt to Caleta Gonzalo (Pumalin Park).

I've actually been quite captivated by your country for some time....I'd love nothing more than to make the drive all the way to the very tip of South America and then explore Argentina....
I had never realized just how much beauty ya'll have stored up down there...seems as if you're all trying to keep it a secret!!
I'm also quite jealous of those trucks. I wish we had more options in the smaller truck category that were actually trucks!

Well you're right man , southern Chile has a climate and landscapes pretty similar to Washington, Oregon and the Rockies areas. Same happens with southern Chile's coastline, it looks like the Pacific Oregon coast. Central Chile is very similar to Big Sur and Southern California coastal regions, just the other hemisphere mirrored ! :) .

Hey Terry
I posted the pictures a little mixed, so you'll find pics of southern Chile (even close to Patagonia) mixed wityh some of Central Chile. For Example Matanzas is like 100 miles south of Santiago (Captial city of Chile, in the middle of the country north to south), but those withe the snowed volcanoes (Pucon, Conguillio, etc.) are 500 miles south of Santiago. Some others with the ferry, the giant Alerce trees, etc. are closer to Patagonia (between 600 and 1200 miles south of Santiago).
Chile is long and narrow, but from north to south it has 3 or 4 main ecosystems and climates. In the north (1300 miles north of Santiago) it has the world's dryest desert (Atacama desert, it rains every 10 years or so), where for example this year we have again the Paris - Daker Rally. Then you get the Central area where you have mild mediterranean climate (like California, Nevada, etc.) with rainy winters and hot summers (300 miles north of Santiago thru 300 miles south), then comes the South (500 to 1000 miles south of Santiago) you have the lake district, with many volcanoes, hot springs, lakes, forests, humid forests, like Oregon, Washington, Rocky Mountain in Summer, etc. and humid winters,m with a lot of rain and snow. Then the far south 1500 miles south where is its pretty cold like a mix of northern Canada to Alaska, with forests , galciers, frozen lakes, windy open spaces, etc.
The good part of Chile for adventurers and campers is the fact that we don't have harmful critters, nor wolves, bears, snakes, spyders, etc. so you can really camp in the open widerness without any fear.
Wow , this post is slower than Monday mornin'

Nothing chauvinistic about it at all! Definitely a beautiful country and enjoyed my stay there as well although many years ago now. Thanks for sharing!:costumed-smiley-007
Thanks guys, comments coming from seasoned travellers is rewarding.
And yes, all these pictures were taken by me on vacation excursions to some of the most "touristic" places in southern Chile. There is a lot more to see in this country especially in the far north where deserts and beaches dominate.
I live in a 5 million soul city and hate the crowds , therefore my ramblings are to mostly inhabited parts of Chile where our souls touch the sky.

Your pictures are great, the country looks amazing,
I've started looking at a trip down there and am trying to figure out whether to rent a vehicle or to fly in and buy one, then sell when I leave. If I am there, buying might be more economical...
Do you know of a good online classified for Santiago? I haven't been able to find one yet...

I've started looking at a trip down there and am trying to figure out whether to rent a vehicle or to fly in and buy one, then sell when I leave. If I am there, buying might be more economical...

Yes, on cars, you might find some here :
http://www.chileautos.cl/chileautos.asp
http://www.semi-nuevos.cl/index.php/usados.html
http://automoviles.elmercurio.com/Clasificados/Venden/index.asp
http://www.twistedandes.com/foro/forumdisplay.php?f=39
NOTE : 475 Chilean Pesos = 1 US$
I am not sure if you can buy a car being a foreigner since once bought you might put the papers in your name and therefore you'll need a RUT (our social security number). There are some car sales places that can sell you a car or better a 4x4 truck and once you'r gone they buy it back ... try http://www.automotrizlascondes.cl/ventas.html , contact Mr Pablo Bononato (owner).
Renting a car in Chile is way more expensive than in the US since its a matter of excess (or lack) of offerings here, so its quite expensive. You'll fine no matter this Hertz, Alamo, National, etc.
Noiwadays you'll also find people renting pickups, vans, campers, even better bikes (www.motoaventura.cl), but its not cheap.
Thanks for sharing the awesome photos. I would love to spend some time traveling through Chile. It's definitely on the list of places to see before I die.
Bro , there is no need to die so young :wings: , we'll wait for ya down here :)

Thank you so much for the links and info!
Some additional searching led me to believe that non-residents can obtain a RUT in Chile. That would allow one to buy a car and obtain insurance for it...
Still, there are more questions than answers, but it's a start!
I guess I won't know if this really makes sense financially and time-wise until I get more details... :smiley_drive:
I'll post up what I am able to find out...

Not a problem Jason, you might contact these guys that actually offer this service : http://www.automotrizlascondes.cl/ventas.html , contact Mr Pablo Bononato (owner). To circulate you must buy a 3rd party accident liabilty/insurance that costs like 30 bucks a year , you are not forced to buy any other insurance like you must in the US.
And yes you can get the RUT number , there are Foreign ID (RUT), have no details however if this requieres some time as resident in Chile...
Anything lemme know.

Ha ha, I guess I should have finished my thought. I've been warming my wife up to the idea of doing some extended, vehicular based traveling in a couple of years. She's starting to warm up to the idea, but has said "We're going to Europe first, if we go.":ylsmoke: So, I'm still trying to sell her on South America. Until then, I'm really digging all of the photos and first hand info you're sharing.

:ylsmoke: , Europe is immensly expensive and is freezing :) , hell a coke costs Eur 5 , and all has been seen and done there, these is no wilderness :snorkel: , you have to pay to do off roading in parks ... this land (CHILE) has parts that are (civilizedly) the last untouched land to find (without being eaten by a lion or shot by a gunman)

Good lord, I'm coming down there for sure.
JP, thanks for the info on the National park and Pumalin Park look great. I'm a little familiar with Doug Tompkin's efforts down there, but hadn't heard of Pumalin.
Beautiful country and outstanding fly fishing to top it off. Who cares that I don't speak Spanish...sign me up.

4 nothin' , yes Douglas Tompkins is a well known personality having bought this huge land and creating natural sanctuaries (also has done similar in southern Argentina) for preservation purposes, Pumalin is his pride and joy , it took a lot of goverment hurdles to be created. I've been twice down there camping and overlandin and the efforts are huge, the park is really a jewel to see and you can notice the respect for our mother nature in every detail.
PS : Fly fishing is world class down there and is world reknown. Remember that Chile fights the rank N°1 in the world with Norway in salmon bussiness, with the world's best freshwater (O2 and food) to breed salmon.
Continuing my photo journey through Chile , for those interested , here it resumes ....

I enjoyed your photos. Nice to see your whole family enjoying adventure in your beautiful country. Que lindo!
P.S. This is my first post, and I'm gathering ideas for my first off-road vehicle. I think it would be amazing to drive it all the way through central to south america someday, including Venezuela where I was born. Of course while I'm in the neighborhood I would have to stop by Chile as well!

Hola y gracias !! Gladly invited... I've been Windsurfing in Margarita (El Yaque) many times and enjoyed the Venezuelan hospitality, great spot , great people !
And also yes, all what I do outdoors is along with my kids (11 and 9) and wife, that is the clue to a great life.

Yes Chile is a wonderfully diverse country. I had the good fortune to spend 3 months there around 20 years ago. We got as far south as Puerto Montt, Coihaique, etc. and I was struck by how similar the geography was to the west coast of Canada. Sadly, we didn't get any further north than Santiago, so I didn't get a chance to visit the famous Atacama region. However, we're in the process of planning a round-the-world trip and Central and South America will be our first destinations. I'm really looking forward to exploring Chile again, revisiting some of the places that hold fond memories for me and discovering new and exciting areas. Thanks for sharing your photos!

Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences. You will be amazed how Chile has changed for good in the last 20 years. Everything is much more in order, more developed, cleaner, highways are a world different, cities have all in order, clean, low robbery, and services like gas stations, Wi fi , internet, lodging, fast food, malls, etc. is a world different... I think you will be amazed how changed Chile is. No matter this, you still have the far north (Atacama desert , be sure to check www.Dakar.com for the Dakar Rally coming to Chile Jan 6 - 15) and far south like the lake district, and Patagonia where adventure, camping, outdoors, climbing, kayacking, etc. is on every corner.
Hello again, I'´m "on field" these days. In southern Chile ...

Although nobody cares :sombrero::sombrero: , here are some more shots of today's outing into Conguillio National Park (IX Region , Chile) , where some years ago they filmed BBC's "Walking with Dinosaurs" , since this place has evolveld almost nothing from the paleozoic era... this park is one of Chile's most beautiful ones, combining Volcanoes, lakes, ancient forests, etc. and the basicness we all need to forget the cities and modern life.

You are lucky to live where you do.
My wife and I have been dreaming of chili for a long time. Some day we will get there. I especially want to visit the Atacama desert. Some parts go hundreds of years without rain, wow. I teach a unit in my science class about xerophiles, an extremophile that lives in low water conditions, and would love to look for some. I would also love to check out Ojos del Salado the tallest volcano in the world.

Hi , well all pics you see here, from the "north" of Chile , are only of the southern part of the Atacama Desert, but in the northern part of this desert , some 600 more miles (still in Chile) into the nrth, you may find these spots where statistically there hasn't rained for hundred of years (this is why its called , and it is in the Guinness Records, as the driest desert of the world). And turning into Conaf (which is our park service and conservation agency) they can guide you to see flora and animals that actually survive these conditions. Its incredible when once a year, the southern part of the desert, receives some drops of rain, it turns into a gigantic garden that dies in a week, it's called the bloomed desert, and thousand of photographers and visitors travel north.
Those pictures where there is a full moon at night, are very close to the are of the Ojos del Salado Volcano (6890 masl = 15.200 ftasl) area.

The whole car issue worked out easier in Argentina. So, I'm flying into Bariloche to pick up a rental and will then tour/fly fish my way around Patagonia throughout Arg. and Chile. Possibly down to Rio Gallegos...
Thanks again for pics and inspiration!

Thanks! Yep went from the north down and crossed into Argentina near Puerto Montt. If//when I can make it back I'd love to take Highway 7 is it?? all the way down south. In some respects Chile reminds me of colorado. Mix of desert and mountains, lots to do and see!

Yes , its called "Carretera Austral", it starts in Puerto Montt southbounds, but then have to take a 4 hour ferry and the continue driving south , its a great place to visit for nature lovers and crowds haters
some pics of this road....
And now I want to go there even more! What an adventure that would be. :Wow1:
Although another story, but this review of the '11 Dakar shows mostly Chilean terrain and what you'll see in northern Chile ... worth the look : :bike_rider:

6000 km is a lot. Very well that traveling as a family.
This year we are going to Mongolia. When we return we will think about Chile. Important. Is there a ferry from Europe or Asia?
Help me with the route? Do I need to learn Spanish?:ylsmoke:

Normally what I've seen from Germans touring to Southamerica y to ship their 4x4s in a contianer from Hamrburg or Antwerpen to Buenos Aires Argentina, and from there drive around Southamerica.
With English you can survive in Southamerica , in large cities , but there are the most locations where only Spanish is spoken , so the ancient language of signs will help you out ... :bike_rider::bike_rider:

I really enjoyed the pics in this thread! Maybe I need to move to Chile...
Glad you liked them !!! ... we are having a white earthquake in southern Chile since the winter has been quite harsh (a lot of snow and low temps). A good time of the year to have nice mild to warm weather is September thru late March .... unless you are a seasoned skier or adventurer ....

 Makes me wish I was at Portillo or Valle Nevado, or any other ski area for that matter. A long road trip on the pan american ending with a winter skiing down there is still on the bucket list.
Oh yes, I ski here in La Parva (neighbors of Valle Nevado) and in Pucon in September (now thay have 10 ft of snow down there).

I've enjoyed all the pages of photos. Earlier this evening, wife and I were listening to an i'net broadcast about all the benefits of living in Chile. I did a search CHILE on EP and found this thread.
Great pictures. Chile looks like a wonderul place. I'm too young to retire, however, Chile does look attractive. Keep your travels posted.
Thanks and enjoyed.

Yes that's a cool sight , I had expectations to paddle the Kajak in those flat high altitude salt lakes (this here is the Salar de Pedernales) at 12,200 ft asl but it was quite windy, low temp (even at high summer) and open water was not to be reached easily ... I remember that day we only saw only one other traveller (a Toyota Tundra with mining contractors)... pretty lonely places I love.

hola , un agrado saludar a una chilena "patiperro"... un abrazo a ti y tu "american" pololo !!
JP
Yes man , its a pity, some 13.000 hectars are gone with the fire ... this was started by israeli backpackers camping on the wild (outside of the national park) , they were caught and are being prosecuted by now. These guys camp on the wild (not at the park's designated camping areas) in order not to pay the camping costs (mega bummer !!) , and due to high winds they started this wildfire. Authorities are pushing to reopen the park in order not to lose tourism flow (this fire did not affect the main touristic spots, but damaged some surroundings that will take years to recover..).

Hi, there!
To say the least.....your pics are fantastic!
I have visited Chile from Coyhayque, Torres del Paine, round tour to Lake General Carreras, Carretera Austral and down to Punta Arenas.
AWESOME!
I'm returning next June to Atacama region, from Paso de Jama and possibly, down to Copiapo and Paso de San Francisco.
Do you have any info on the snow amount in this Paso in June?
Thanks for sharing your pics, I'll try to send some of General Carrera and Carretera Austral.
This is my very first post here.
rgs,
Ricardo
Boas Tardes Ricardo , muito obrigado pel suas palabras !! :)
You may laugh but these latter pictures are cell phone pictures !! But I try to shoot the nicest parts somebody from out of Chile would like to see. I am an avid fan of travelling , camping , biking, watersports, etc. and really Chile has a lot to offer. Very nice trip you did , I have been twice on the Carrertera austral , evan camping there, also have done the round trip around the General Carrera lake (Chile's biggest and shared with Argentina) those are places given good weather are one of the nicest to see in Chile. Atamaca Region is also awsome, different game than souther Chile's rain forests and lakes, but the desert and the high altitude plains , volacnoes, etc. are of unmatched beauty. Been also around those places too. Paso San Francisco is a high altitude pass , like 4000 masl (13.000 ft) so in June (winter in Chile) expect it to be closed.- Check here : http://www.pasosfronterizos.gov.cl/ and also in particlar here : http://www.pasosfronterizos.gov.cl/cf_sanfco.html
Cheers and see you around !!

Hi, me and my wife are planing a trip to chile in march. I was born in chile but raised in the USA. We will spending 4 days in Santiago with family and the flying to Puerto Montt where we want to rent a 4x4 truck and explore the Carretera Austral. We have done some research on the Internet but everything is crazy expensive so we have been exploring renting a motorhome. We want to spend 5-6 dais in this area. last year we explored Fruitillar, Osorno, Huilo Huilo, Geometric thermals, Puerto Montt, Chiloe, and Castro. If you have any recommendations we would be very grateful.
Thanks
Not a ton of information here, and its been 10 years since I was down there, but if you can get to chiloe and puerto montt I really enjoyed those places.
Check the trip planning section, I recall a recent post about one of the ferry's being out of order? I am hoping to do a trip down there again soon and I think having some sort of vehicle is the way to go.

JP gone on any adventures recently? :)
Hey, well we were again in Patagonia this last January (high summer) , and then (February) my wife drove with the 2 kids to Atacama desert area to visit relatives there, nothing that much exciting. We are into MTB so almost all pics are MTB related. More exercise and less fuel consumption.

Chile is wild and beautiful. The Lake District is gorgeous! Volcanoes, glaciers, ferries to Bariloche in Argentina are very popular ways to travel.
You can drive into southern Andes from Pto. Montt, then it's various ferries over the lakes. Fantastic place to visit.

Great! Until I saw these pictures, I had mostly decided not to bring my bike if I do a trip. Now you have me re-thinking the idea. Looks like some fabulous trails to ride!

Oh man, we do a LOT of MTB down here , close to Santiago we have some nice places to go (even 2 bikeparks) , down in the south (lake disctrict to Patagonia) there are LOTS of places to drop a bike and just enjoy, and in the north, in the Atacama desert, especially San Pedro de Atacama, there are huge crowds biking into the desert and into the high altitudes (if your hearth permits it).

I live in a 5 million soul city and hate the crowds , therefore my ramblings are to mostly inhabited parts of Chile where our souls touch the sky.
Hi jpvm,
I've just moved from California to Santiago for work and I was hoping you could answer a few questions. Besides Santiago and Valpo, I've visited Puren and Pucon via bus/rental car. The question I have for you is about what's available close to Santiago. By close, I mean someone with a Monday-Friday job could go visit on a weekend and come back in time for work. I'm trying to decide if it's worth buying a car for weekend getaways since I commute in metro. From the research I've done, it seems like all the cool stuff is either really far north or really far south of Santiago. Even Pucon is about 10 hours away, and I wouldn't consider it very far south compared to what else is available. I know there is Cajon de Maipo, and I've read Mendoza, Argentina might have some interesting sights. Is there anything else you can recommend?
Thanks!
