The story is more boring that what the picture shows.
Earlier in the year I had broken some ribs in a sand boarding fall. A few weeks later we had a trip that I didn't want to miss so I gritted my teeth and tagged along anyway.
Around the fire the guys swap chairs etc and later on I noticed that my chair was broken but I sat in it anyway. I sank lower and lower as the drinks flowed and the chair gave way more and more. Eventually I needed to get up but got a rude reminder that my ribs were buggered.
And somebody had a camera ready at that precise moment.

So I went out exploring some old mining areas south of Las Vegas, NV. I was heading out by myself so I decided to take along the remote for the camera and see if I couldn't get some self portraits along the way. I do have to say that setting up to take pictures while you wheel is a different kind of deal. I am definately not very good at it yet.

Hey, I'm down anytime that I'm in that area, but unfortunately I don't think I'll be back there this season. My schedule is pretty booked till April. I'd really like to head out to CO and into some warmer parts of the southwest in April with the Cruiser but I'm not sure if its going to work out. I've got my house completely ripped apart right now and a garage that I still need to put some finishing touches on! We'll see. OOOH La la! haha I've gotta get some trimwork done myself. I cut my own hair back in October to form this masterpiece of a mullet but only as a joke really. I just never got around to having it fixed by a professional. I told the girls on the team that if any of them won a race while we were in Europe last month they could cut my hair. They didn't ski so well, so here I am still with this dumb haircut! I'm hoping we have greater success in Calgary next weekend! haha

As per upcruiser's reply:

While old fashioned "straight skis" which had little side cut could carve turns, great leg strength was required to generate the enormous pressure necessary to flex them into a curved shape for carving...

Ha! Scot Schmidt taught me a few things in Red Lodge. Anyway, I had a crazy coach who had some 2x4s where he mounted some strapped Look bindings. Every year he would race all of us who thought our shiny new Dynastars with the cool red anti-vibe bulb on the tip would be fast. He won every time. Lesson learned: it ain't the equipment, its the skier.

A few other things he'd do:

First 4 weeks of training we could not buckle our ski boots,
During free ski he'd confiscate 1 ski (first 4 weekends sucked with the loose boots too) and poles,
He'd dull/round the edges until races (or if you forgot to sharpen and you had to race at Howelson, life blew).
Taught that the further back you were on the skis and the more out-of-control then the faster you were.

"If you look fast you feel fast, if you feel fast you go fast, if you go fast, chicks dig ya'."

First 4 weeks of training we could not buckle our ski boots,

Man, that's tough! I used to ski, a lot. One year I was fortunate enough to hit Squaw Valley after 6' of freshness the day before. It happended to be my wedding day (that the snow fell), and I was totally thinking about almost nothing but the slopes! My fiance would not allow me to ski until after I said I Do so that I would not have the risk of being in a cast as I hobbled down the aisle (so to speak). So next day, thusly encumbered with the new wife, I was freed to hit the slopes. I had dreamed about skiing Tahoe my entire life, but this was my first opportunity.

There is a run at Squaw whose name I cannot recall, but its a double black diamond, that is only open once in a great while. That day I was there was the first time it had opened in 3 years! Just a series of sharp kick turns as you plunged down a tree lined rock chute.

So I kicked out and over the cornice and fell about 15 times. I was starting to think I really sucked and did not belong, when I pulled up my pants leg and realized my boot buckles were undone. No wonder I had no control! One of the best days of my life, for many reasons.

I can't imagine running a slalom course unhinged.

These were taken of me while watching a local mountain bike race in the small town of Ascuncion in Baja Mexico.

The photographer was Diane Trotter just to give her full credit. The little kids loved having their pictures taken and shown what they were doing and Diane captured the moment perfectly

It was really cool and dispite all the media on how rough Mexico is right now, we're already planning on heading back down.

Probably the nicest bunch of people we've ever met in our lives. Running the guantlet of the border is a bit scary, but once you're past Ensenada, you're in a whole nother world, and a beautiful one at that

Almost everyone I hear from who gets into the heart of Mexico says the same thing, it's refreshing to hear a real account from a real person. That's probably why I try to avoid mass media for my news.

Great shots!

Actually yes. Was worth close to $100k, the father owns a local LC shop and was letting his 16 year old son drive it on the trails that day. 2004 Chevy Tahoe engine, Dynatrac D60 up front, IIRC D70 in the rear, 40's, the works...

Thanks, brother. We actually got home last summer, and we ALL got home... Which, considering that we spent a year looking for IEDs in Baghdad, that amount of Blessing was a pretty big deal! :victory:

Matt,

This one I had to play with a bit because just my breathing between frames caused a lot of motion blur on my body. I tried to fix that by pulling in myself from just one of the photos and blending it into the HDR. Didn't work out perfectly.

The shots I have done are off a tripod, three shots, one -2, one correctly exposed and one +2 over exposed. Then I use Photomatix to combine them into an HDR. Fun stuff but easy to get carried away and end up with a cartoon looking photo if your not careful.

Here's one of the same scene without me in it.

I am so jealous of you guys outwest with the canvas you have to work with. Even when I make it out to the mountains here the haze that gave the Blue Ridge their name often just makes everything blah.

Man, the clarity of the "without you" shot is impressive. Even on my crappy laptop screen it looks crisp.

I am so jealous of you guys outwest with the canvas you have to work with. Even when I make it out to the mountains here the haze that gave the Blue Ridge their name often just makes everything blah.

I lived in Richmond VA during High School so I know what you mean. I do enjoy the west. I just need to make more time to get out and practice shooting. :sombrero:

Last Saturday thirty minutes before I left to get it all cut off to my normal zero buzz I wear from May through October.

I could only take it for one week :D
First time ever.

And what it looks like after growing for about seven months, naturally curly, taken May 16th, about a week before the first photo.

My wife and I love the 'self-portrait' photos! We always take several and put them together as our Christmas card for family. It is always funny when people see us taking the photo and offer to take one for us. We then have to explain that we actually want the self-portrait look!

Here is one from Nepal a few years ago...
