Autos in monteros are pretty rock solid based on my experience (10+ yrs. moderating a mitsu 4x4 tech. forum) and I only know of issues caused when the owner used mobil 1 synthetic auto tranny fluid. Im personally on my 4th Auto tranny monty and none have EVER had a problem.. Two of mine have had well over 200k without ANY tranny issues.

I'd buy it for 3k if I had it although $2500 sounds better. Can use argument about cost of gas skyrocketing and how little demand there seems to be for monteros while other SUV's would be so much easier for you to resell in the future, etc.

I understand yer dislike of automatics... I prefer manuals myself; probably because I grew up driving nothing else.

That being said, 'modern-day' automatic transmissions have gotten very good at doing what they're supposed to do. True of Mitsubishi's transmissions... probably why their manuals are nearly impossible to find. I’ve owned a couple of SWB Gen1 Monteros; both 4-cylinder automatics; both with over 175K; both used for on and off-roading. The problems I experienced were found in their underpowered, over-stressed engines… never their transmissions.

Incidentally, the DOHC V6 packed into the 95 you’re looking at was one of Mitsubishi's stronger motors.:box:
