I have a 94 with a 3" lift, JKS quicker disconnects and a dynomax cat-back exhaust. In the garage is a Ford 8.8 with discs, SYE kit and a 4" lift. The only reason I want any more lift is for the rear suspension. All the gear and the trailer cause the back end to rub the tires (and that is without the new heavy rear bumper, canoe, jerry can, and extra gear). See pic below.

I often wish I'd gone with a cherokee instead of a wrangler:( More room, cheap, and every yard around has at least a couple for parts scavenging. I've got a buddy who buys them super cheap, swaps on a lift, beats the snot out of them, then starts over. We just bought a 95 PA State Park Cherokee at auction for ~$1100. It had "bad steering" written on the windshield so nobody bid. We threw on a new box and the thing is perfect. It still says Park Ranger:jumping:

Well I could say I love my cherokke but I havent actually driven it any where except from where I bought it to the house. So far it has a RE 3.5 " lift with pro comp adjustable track bar, ZJ steering upgrade, new drag link, new brakes. Waiting to be done list. Front bumper, rear main seal, SYE kit, major tune up including draining the front and rear diffs.

Why'd you trade "up"?
I traded for a few reasons...I wanted the 4.0, I wanted something 4 door and ive alwasy liked the XJs. Im getting into camping more, and the XJ just fits the bill better than the TJ. not to mention its WAY more comfortable onroad. Power everything and AC is nice to have in a DD. It was hard going from a locked/lifted TJ on 34s to a BONE stock XJ, but i'll have this opne built soon enough!

Downgrading? Doesn't that imply that one is somehow superior to the other? I beg to differ! The best Jeeps (or any vehicle make) are those that are used to take us to the horizon and beyond ... those that transcend normal use. Your horizon might be atop a perilous mountain of rock, or miles across a barren wasteland - the purpose is the same.

Removal of front locker, removal of rock sliders, lowered from 8.5" and 36's down to 6" and 33's, ditch OBA in favor of OB electrical, generally making it more comfortable for the interstate vs the rockpile.

To be honest i feel your rig may be far superior to mine for MY current interests, wanna trade? :shakin:

Yet another Frameless Wonder here. New to this site, but a lot of you know me from NAXJA, etc. Here's my '94 2-dr Sport 4.0 HO, running a HP D44 front axle, 4.88s and a full Detroit. Ford 8.8 rear, also Detroit. 34" Trxus M/T radials, Terra 2Low, and a lot of custom shat.

Camping trip with a couple other XJ's last summer...very patriotic, no?

While I love extreme rock crawling and stuff, I've kept the XJ streetable and reliable. I even drove it to Moab (2300-ish miles) a few weeks ago...then wheeled the crap out of it and drove home. It's what makes Cherokees unique, IMHO.

My 1996 looks like cshontz white one and Matt's. For my 4 person family the XJ is a GREAT ! rig.... use it for wheel'n & camping & sometimes as a commuter to work.
Some mods I've built and some I've bought.... basically a point and shoot rig.
NAXJA is a great source of XJ knowledge as is the JeepForum XJ forum.

Now I want to try to build up a MJ trailer to tow behind the XJ... hence the reason I started coming to this site... the Camping/AT trailer forum....

Here's my Heep.....to the Rubicon twice, all over Moab twice, all over Washington and Oregon.....it's held up pretty well for a 1990 with 269k miles.

Lots of armor, locked front and rear, generally carry everything inside and low, 6.5" of lift loaded, 33" tires, 102" WB.

Not pretty but very effective.

Nice Woody!

I like what you did with the THOR guards. Nice addition.

I'm running THOR guards, a prototype THOR flat belly skid, one-off THOR front and rear tube bumpers and they helped me with the rock rail outriggers. Nice guys, bulletproof armor.

Mine, '01 with about 5" lift on 33s, rear is locked, front has limited slip.

My idea for the way it is built was something I could still drive to the trail and back, yet wheel whatever I wanted. So far it has worked.

Did you modify your bump stops? Do you have any fender interference when you stuff the tires?

Bought it new in 1990, was my daily driver for years until I gave it to my mom for about 5 years. I started taking it off-roading more so I took it back, gave her another SUV and started the modifications. Still have a few boxes of parts to install or modify. Only have 126k miles. Has been a real faithful friend and has gone just about everywhere I have asked it.

Upgrading or changing things can seem like a never ending story...........

Guess I introduce myself and my rigs here.....
Found this site while researching sand ladders. I like the what I have been seeing. Great info not only on vehicles builds , but the trailer section is awsome.
My name is Matt and I currently have a 93 XJ w/ 4.5" Black Mtn lift, 31" BFG A/T's on Jeep Canyon rims, Con-Ferr rack, E-Bay rear bumper w/ spare tire-jerry can ability....
I have a MileMarker PE 8000 for it when I find the right bumper.
My other rig is a 97 Dodge Ram X-Cab 4x w/ 3" Rncho lift, 315/75/BFG M/T's, 5.2 powerplant w/Hypertech programmer. This is my DD, so the XJ is being outfitted as the Family wheelin' rig....
Haven't figured out how to post pics here yet, but when I do I'll post some.

Here is my 99 xj, straight six, automatic transmission. I've got a 2.5" lift with 235/75 tires on black soft 8 wheels. The only engine modification I've done is a K&N intake, but I would like to do an edge trail jammer kit. And as soon as these tires go bald I am going to put another inch and a half of lift and get some 32 inch tires.

But my dream jeep is a wrangler with a brute conversion and LS1 engine swap and a set of portal gear axles.

Wow, lots of XJ owners on here!

I've got a 98 that is currently, and has been for months, undergoing a larger lift.
I had a 3" Skyjacker on there for about 3 years and finally wore/tore out about 7 BFG M/T's over that time and figured i should get some new meats.
Thought i could get some 33-12.5R15's on there with new wheels and better offset if i cut the fenders enough...
I was wrong. :(
So, i got an RE 4.5 and started ripping all te old crap off. Pretty much from the start it was a total PITA job, and i started this thing back in September. Then in November it got too cold in my un-insulated garage to work on it, so it's been sitting there in a couple hundred pieces since that time.
It's just starting to warm up (it's been above freezing a few days in March) so i'm hoping to get some friends and get out there soon to get rolling on it again.
I've got an ARB snorkel on there now, but i need a replacement rubber tube, the part that runs from the fender area to the airbox.
I also need bumpers front and rear (mine have been pounded on enough for a couple of lifetimes now) and some rock sliders.
A winch would be nice as well, but front tow points will suit me fine for a while. lol

I attached a pic of some nice waterfalls that are fun to try and climb at a friend's property in NY state. (It was Canada Day long weekend.) :D

Yakima load warrior cargo basket
Custom 4x4 front tow hooks and brackets
rear hitch
K&N filter
235x75x15 Firestone Destination AT tires
Big tool box full of tools, recovery gear, first aid, etc. in the back

2001 XJ 3.5 on 33's

Dude, how did you get your XJ with a 3.5" lift to fit 33's???

I had a Skyjacker 3" on my '98 and i cut THE HELL out of the fenders, but those 33's would NOT fit in there. The tires rubbed as soon as i turned the wheel about 30%...

My tires are 33x12.5R15's on wheels with 3.75" of backspace.

Magic I guess...JK. It's just the RE 3.5 SF kit with factory canyon wheels and 1.5" wheel spacers. The RE kits do run a little big, but you can see in the pic's I'm trimmed up to the washer bottle. Here is another flex shot at URE.

I guess those spacers helped quite a bit!
I cut and cut and cut, but wit hthe crappy Skyjacker kit, i was rubbing badly on the firewall. Good work on yours!

I am running a 33x12.50 right now and I am considering taller and skinnier next time around. I think a something around a 34x11.50 is what I am looking for.

Correct.. 97+ XJ flares. I'm going back to earlier style though, had enough of these popping off the nutstrips.

I also plan a taller/narrower tire next set. 33x10.50 or maybe a 285/75 which i think equates to a 34x11?

Iv been through Pisgah a couple of times and I will be going back sometime this summer. I might even hit Tellico depending on what is open. I tend to stay on the TN border East of GSMNP, there are alot of logging roads through the NF to explore. Being that your in Indian Trail you most likely know alot more about that area than me.

That would be awesome. Yeah, I spent alot of summers camping up there, on the NC side as a kid. But I have yet to have my Jeep up there. I've not even been up to Tellico yet. Uwharrie is actually closer to me than Pisgah, but not by too much.

Please let me know when you plan to roll through here, heading up that way. I could even day trip up there. New trails are what I'm hunting now. My buddy in the white Scrambler is really looking forward to more places to play as well.

I will be up in Murphy/Tellico with my XJ renting a cabin for a week the 3rd week in June. Let me know if anyone wants to do some trails. I was just up there the first weekend in May and the only trails that are closed are the extreme ones (#9, Lower 2)
